Creating themes/stories Co-ordination Blocking by style/type Using colour Symmetry and balance Repetition
CREATING THEMES/STORIES Don't limit visual merchandising themes to Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn. Try to use at least six different themes in a year. Think about using special events such as fathers Day, Valentines, festivals and local events. Look for inspiration from the Internet, Flims, books and most importantly other retailers. The best ideas may come from what they have tried and tested.
USING COLOUR People are always attracted to the colours However using accent colours you can often attract the eye to other products. Think of how bold bright colours lift dull ones. If your product range is neutral or you have a limited colour range, choose colours that harmonise well with each other and balance the display. Working with a large range of colours, blocking should be carried out light to dark and left to right to ensure balance is maintained.
C O - O R D I N A T I O N Using colours that coordinate together is a visual merchandiser’s way to entice customers to be more experimental. Using coordination, it is important to make sure it is clear to the customer what to put together. Avoid using to many colours and products.
SYMMETRY & BALANCE Orderly, neat and tidy should be your overall effect. Don’t clutter the customers perspective even if it is an eclectic and busy look that your trying to achieve. Balance things out. It doesn’t need to be perfectly symmetrical.
BLOCKING BY STYLE/TYPE There are instances when it is really effective to arrange your products by type only. It
can have a huge impact visually if you take a section of a wall to just one product and make a feature of it.
REPETITION Choose one feature item and repeat it in clean lines and grouped.
Maintain balance
by using repeats of odd numbers, use 3s and 5s as these are often more aesthetically pleasing to the eye.Keeping items with coordinating colours, patterns, textures or functions together will help structure and balance your display.

“Suits & blazers are an important category for our brand, and displaying them with utmost
precision becomes a necessity. There are specific guidelines for displaying a suit and the same has been explained in this section.
Suits on a front hang : display only 4 suits on a front hang rod. Not 3 nor 5.
One style code per front hang : Display the entire size set. Do not mix 2
or more style codes. If a suit piece sells and you cannot complete the size set, replace the suit style with another, which has a complete size set.
Pocket square : Pocket squares are used to enhance the look of a suit. In case there is a shortage, use them carefully as suggested.
When there’s a shortage of pocket squares, use them on front hangs.
When putting them on a line of two or more front hangs, ensure that its put on all or none of the suits.

HOW TO USE WARM AND COOL COLOR TOGETHER These are a few examples of color blocking. Here the colors that have been used are both warm and cool colors both.......
But Intensity of the colors is the same. Thus they have been placed together.
Note the stacks are same in number/height and neatly placed in rows and vertical columns.
Merchandise presentation on a Wall or Gondola
LIGHT
Neutral colors should
DARK
be color blocked seperately.
Cut size stacks at the bottom
What are cut sizes? Cut sizes are those garments for which the entire set of sizes/colors have been sold
out.Cut sized garments are therefore the last pieces left from any set. These cannot be
stacked on the shelf with the rest of the merchandise since are incomplete and thus they cannot be color blocked individually. These are then placed at the bottom most shelves with the rest of the cut sizes.
WHY IS COLOR BLOCKING DONE VERTICALLY? When a customer is looking for a particular type or style of garment, he should be able to access the
entire of merchandise and thus all styles and colors of that particular garment. This is possible by arranging the merchandise vertically.
MERCHANDISE PRESENTATION (SIDE HANGGING). Here are some examples of how to color block for a hanging unit. Notice the following; a) Round necks are put together b) Collars are put together
c) Color co-ordinated in terms of all pastels together
d) Green and yellow are in the same family thus have been co-ordinated together.
The basic formula is to mix the color families.
Example
Red
Blue
+
Purple
=
Thus all shades of blue, red and purple go together.
COLOR BLOCKING- GONDOLAS AND WALL UNITS (STACKING) Color blocking is always done vertically following the VIBGYOR principle. This is to ensure that the merchandise of different colors is not scattered or
jumbled across the floor. The VIBGYOR as shown below is an organized sequence of colors with the help of which we arrange our merchandise
Keeping the light shades on top at eye level and the darker shades below
automates the eye movement to flow from dark to light revealing the entire range of colors.
VIBGYOR COLOR BLOCKING
Always put VIBGYOR to use . From Left to Right or from Right to Left.

EXTERIOR PRESENTATION - AN INTRODUCTION
STORE FRONT The quality of a store front is a major determinant for a
customer, particularly a new customer, and should not be underestimated.
The exterior appearance of a store silently announces what customers can expect inside.
Good exterior visual merchandising attracts attention, creates interest and invites the customer into the business.
The exterior presentation can offer a conservative, progressive, lavish or discount image to the customer.
FACADE & SIGNAGE A sign is a silent salesperson, and part of a shopper’s first impression. A sign’s design conveys a great deal about the business inside.
A stark design and limited materials may suggest discount prices and no frills. Elegant and expensive sign materials may suggest luxury goods and services. Signs with unlit or missing light bulbs, flaking or faded paint, or cracked and peeling backgrounds can hurt the overall store image.
WINDOW “As many as one in every four sales could be the result of a good window display.”
Special emphasis should be placed on a store’s window displays because they are the information link to the potential customer.
Window displays attract attention, create interest and invite people into the store to purchase goods.
There is less than 11 seconds to accomplish this, as that is the
average amount of time an individual will spend looking at a window display.
Merchandise in the window should be changed as frequently as possible to give a fresh look.
WINDOW Even if there is no offer, collection story or promotion running, you can use garments in a color story to create a new mood and look on the window.
New displays indicate that new, up-to-date merchandise is available. Use props to compliment the garments on the window like vases etc
While displaying the mannequins, ensure that there is a co-relation or a story between them, as if they’re having a conversation,or ogether at a particular place.
Accessorize the window display with cufflinks, belts, ties etc.
ENTRANCE Approximately 75 percent of the first time customers remember a store’s entrance, which provides the first andlast view of the store’s interior.
A cluttered entryway causes shoppers to indefinitely postpone entering a store, while an attractive, well designed entrance is inviting to the customer.
INTERNAL PRESENTATION Selling space is the most important part of a store and therefore, effort to utilize each square foot will maximize sales. Once a customer enters the store, attracted by the exterior facade and display, it becomes important to sustain
his expectations, develop a desire for the merchandise, show what is available, and encourage both impulseand planned buying
Three major goals of a store should be to:
1) Motivate the customer to spend money, 2) Project the image of the store and
3) Keep the maintenance expenses to a minimum
FLOOR FIXTURES The CDU’s should be placed according to the requirements.
If a particular wall needs more space to display merchandise, you can utilize a CDU The CDU’s should be placed in such a way that it does not obstruct the walking space The CDU’s should be aligned properly.
The ends of the CDU should be in a straight line andnot displaced.
The nesting table is usually kept in the entrance, and it can be used to display a color story, co-ordinated look.
FLOOR FIXTURES
LIGHTING “Lighting is essential in calling attention towards merchandise in a display. Thus there should not exist any area in the display area of the store which is dimly lit or dark. If anything goes wrong with the light it has to be taken care of immediately.
You can adjust the direction of the lights in the store to focus on the garments. Lighting treatment may be used to draw attention
to part of the display area, a specific item inthe display, or to co- ordinate parts of the total display area.
WALL FIXTURES/ELEVATIONS
Wall fixtures are used to display the garment aesthetically and effectively.
A fixture should not only complement the merchandise but also the atmosphere in the store.
Different types of wall fixtures are used to showcase every view of the garment and breaking the monotony of just shelving. Types:
- Shelves: to display folded shirts/T-Shirts and cotton trousers with accessories. - Front Hanging: to display the front view of a shirt, suit/blazer, knits/t shirts.
- Side Hanging: to display the side view of formal trousers, shirts, suits/Blazers, t-shirts and knits.
