Summer READS
ON A HOT SUMMER’S DAY there’s nothing more relaxing than kicking back in a hammock and enjoying Casper’s breeze with a good book. Dive into Wind City Books’ summer reading list where you’ll find a book to suit any mood... 1. THE ACCIDENTAL HIGHWAY by Ben Tripp In eighteenth-century England, young Christopher “Kit” Bristol is the unwitting servant of notorious highwayman Whistling Jack. One dark night, Kit finds his master bleeding from a mortal wound, dons the man’s riding cloak to seek help, and changes the course of his life forever. Mistaken for Whistling Jack and on the run from redcoats, Kit is catapulted into a world of magic and wonders he
thought the stuff of fairy tales. Bound by magical law, Kit takes up his master’s quest to rescue a rebellious fairy princess from an arranged marriage to King George III of England. But his task is not an easy one, for Kit must contend with the feisty Princess Morgana, gobling attacks, and a magical map that portends his destiny: as a hanged man upon the gallows…. 2.
Destiny of the Republic: A TALE OF
MADNESS, MEDICINE AND THE MURDER OF A PRESIDENT
by Candice Millard
James Abram Garfield was one of the most extraordinary men ever elected president. Born into abject poverty, he rose to become a wunderkind scholar, a Civil War hero, a renowned congressman, and a reluctant
presidential candidate who took on the nation’s corrupt political establishment. But four months after Garfield’s inauguration in 1881, he was shot in the back by a deranged office-seeker named Charles Guiteau. Garfield survived the attack, but become the object of bitter, behind-thescenes struggles for power— over his administration, over the nation’s future, and, hauntingly, over his medical care. 3. WE ALL LOOKED UP
by Tommy Wallach
Peter, the star basketball player at his school, is worried “they” might actually be right. Meanwhile Eliza can’t wait to escape Seattle—and her reputation—and perfecton-paper Anita wonders if admission to Princeton is worth the price of abandoning her real dreams. Andy, for his part,
8. 9. 10. 11. 12.
doesn’t understand all the fuss about college and career—the future can wait. Or can it? Because it turns out the future is hurtling through space with the potential to wipe out life on Earth. As these four seniors—along with the rest of the planet—wait to see what damage an asteroid will cause, they must abandon all thoughts of the future and decide how they’re going to spend what remains of the present. 4. ANGEL FIRE
by Ron Franscell
A haunting tale of two brothers’ separate odysseys of self-discovery. Twenty-four years after war correspondent Daniel McLeod is killed in a Viet Cong ambush, his only brother Cassidy is drawn by a mysterious caller to their Wyoming hometown, where
confront a lifetime of his own ghosts. Their entangled stories are about equilibrium, the delicate balance between memory and the unknown, dislocation and homecoming ... loss and restoration. 5. THE WILD TRUTH
by Carine McCandless
The spellbinding story of Chris McCandless, who gave away his savings, hitchhiked to Alaska, walked into the wilderness alone, and starved to death in 1992, fascinated not just New York Times bestselling author Jon Krakauer, but also the rest of the nation. But the real story of Chris’s life and his journey has not yet been told - until now. The missing pieces are finally revealed in The Wild Truth, written by Carine McCandless, Chris’s beloved and trusted sister. Featured in both the book and film, Carine has wrestled for more than twenty years with the legacy of her brother’s journey to self-discovery, and now tells her own story while filling in the blanks of his. 6. THE MORRIGAN’S KEY
by Kristin Schaeffer
In the wake of a traumatic event Dana Walker finds herself in a downward spiral, unable to return to her life as a high school senior. When she seeks solace in a nearby park instead of going to school, she soon makes a series of discoveries that place her at the epicenter of an ancient battle between good and evil. Will Dana’s new found power bring her out of the darkness, or will it destroy her? Join Dana and her cast of unlikely companions on a journey that spans worlds and time as she unlocks the mysteries of the Prophecy of the Legends of the Celts. 7. EUPHORIA by Lily King Just after a failed suicide attempt, Andrew Bankson, English anthropologist studying the Kiona tribe in the territory of New Guinea, meets a pair of fellow anthropologists fleeing
from a cannibalistic tribe down river. Nell Stone is controversial and well respected. Her rough Australian husband, Fen, is envious of her fame and determined to outshine her. Bankson helps them find a new tribe to study, the artistic, female- dominated Tam. Nell’s quiet assurance and love of the work, and Fen’s easy familiarity, pull Bankson back from the brink. But it is the growing fire between him and Nell that they cannot do anything about. Layered on top of that is Nell’s grasp of the nuances of the Tam, which makes it clear that she will once again surpass Fen. 8. THE OCEAN AT THE END OF THE LANE
by Neil Gaiman
The never-named fiftyish narrator is back in his childhood homeland, rural Sussex, England, where he’s just delivered the eulogy at a funeral. With “an hour or so to kill” afterward, he drives about—aimlessly, he thinks— until he’s at the crucible of his consciousness: a farmhouse with a duck pond. There, when he was seven, lived the Hempstocks, a crone, a housewife, and an 11-year-old girl, who said they were grandmother, mother, and daughter. Now, he finds the crone and, eventually, the housewife— the same ones, unchanged— while the girl is still gone, just as she was at the end of the childhood adventure he recalls in a reverie that lasts all afternoon. He remembers how he became the vector for a malign force attempting to invade and waste our world. The three Hempstocks are guardians, from time almost immemorial, situated to block such forces and, should that fail, fight them. 9. WE ARE CALLED TO RISE
by Laura McBride
Your heart will break…then soar” (Redbook) when, far from the neon lights of the Vegas strip, three lives collide in a splitsecond mistake and a child’s fate
hangs in the balance. Avis thought her marriage had hit a temporary rut. But with a single confession in the middle of the night, her carefully constructed life comes undone. 10. THE SHAPE OF WATER
by Andrea Camilleri
Andrea Camilleri’s novels starring Inspector Montalbano have become an international sensation and have been translated from Italian into eight languages, ranging from Dutch to Japanese. The Shape of Water is the first book in this sly, witty, and engaging series with its sardonic take on Sicilian life. Early one morning, Silvio Lupanello, a big shot in the village of Vigàta, is found dead in his car with his pants around his knees. The car happens to be parked in a rough part of town frequented by prostitutes and drug dealers, and as the news of his death spreads, the rumors begin. Enter Inspector Salvo Montalbano, Vigàta’s most respected detective. With his characteristic mix of humor, cynicism, compassion, and love of good food, Montalbano goes into battle against the powerful and the corrupt who are determined to block his path to the real killer. This funny and fast-paced Sicilian page-turner will be a delicious discovery for mystery afficionados and fiction lovers alike. 11. AND THE BIRDS RAINED DOWN
by Jocelyne Saucier
Tom and Charlie have decided to live out the remainder of their lives on their own terms, hidden away in a remote forest, their only connection to the outside world a couple of pot growers who deliver whatever they can’t eke out for themselves. But one summer two women arrive. One is a young photographer documenting a a series of catastrophic forest fires that swept Northern Ontario early in the century; she’s on the trail of the recently deceased
Ted Boychuck, a survivor of the blaze. And then the elderly aunt of the one of the pot growers appears, fleeing one of the psychiatric institutions that have been her home since she was sixteen. She joins the men in the woods and begins a new life as Marie-Desneige. With the photographer’s help, they find Ted’s series of paintings about the fire, and begin to decipher the dead man’s history.
12. CHEESE CAT
by Carmen Agra Deedy and Randall Wright and Barry Moser
Skilley, an alley cat with an embarrassing secret, longs to escape his street-cat life. Tired of dodging fishwives’ brooms and carriage wheels, he hopes to trade London’s damp alleyways for the warmth of ye olde Cheshire Cheese Inn. He strikes a bargain with Pip, an erudite mouse: Skilley will protect the mice who live at the inn, and in turn, the mice will provide Skilley with the thing he desires most. But when Skilley and Pip are drawn into a crisis of monumental proportions involving a tyrannical cook, an unethical barmaid, and a malevolent tomcat, their new friendship is pushed to its limits. The escalating crisis threatens the peace not only of the Cheshire Cheese Inn but also the British Monarchy! Unbeknownst to Skilley and Pip, however, they have a secret ally: a famous author who scribbles away many an afternoon in ye olde Cheshire Cheese Inn...

Core
AS MUCH AS WE’D LIKE TO FIND THE MAGIC pill, shake, or quick-fix diet, there’s really only one way to get and keep our bodies fit for an active summer: exercise. Conditioning our bodies is the only sure fire method of preparing for a day of hiking, water skiing, swimming, biking or any of the other summer awesomeness Casper has to offer.
1.
single leg glute bridges
1. Squat Stand with feet a little wider than shoulder-width apart, hips stacked over knees over ankles. Bend your knees into a 90 degree angle, making sure your knees don’t go over your toes. Squeeze the glutes on your way up.
4. single leg glute Lie faceup with knees bent and feet flat, hipwidth apart. Extend arms by sides, palms facing down. Lift one foot up and press hips up into a bridge position, then lower hips to the floor.
2
Side lunges
2. lunge Stand in a split stance with the right foot forward and the left leg back. The feet should be about 2 to 3 feet apart. Bend the knees and lower the body down until the back knee is a few inches from the floor.
5. side lunges Take a large step with your right foot to the right side and lunge toward the floor. Make sure your right knee does not extend past your toes and keep your left leg relatively straight. Push off through your right foot to return to the start to complete one.
3
decline lunges
3. one leg deadlifts Stand holding weights in front of thighs and place left leg out behind you with the toe touching the floor. Keep shoulders back, abs in and the back straight, tip from the hips and lower the weights towards the floor.
6.decline lunges Create a stable step for yourself, about 10 - 12” in height. Start by standing on step. Take a step backwards, lowering yourself into a reverse lunge.

SPOIL YOUR SELF
LIFE PULLS US IN MANY DIRECTIONS AT ONCE.
We get caught up in the mundane tasks of everyday life and somewhere amongst waking kids for school, answering business calls on our way to work, checking emails at the office, and coordinating with our spouse who will pick up little Susie from dance class we forget to take care of ourselves.
You know the feeling. You’ve done everything you can for everyone in your life and one day you realize your muscles are knotted, you’re tense, and irritable, and if one more person calls your name you might just run away to the mountains, never to be heard from again. Do yourself and your family a favor and take the time out you need to get a massage, take a yoga class, indulge your senses in some aroma therapy. Take care of yourself first. Only then can you really take care of others.

1. Wash: pull impurities from your skin, open up pores, clean dead skin and bacteria away from your face. Fact: Bubbles and foam are BAD! They destroy the delicate lipid barrier of the skin and ruin the skin’s natural moisture process.
3. Treatment: Pores are still open to the environment, so this step closes your pores, keeping good ingredients in and bad ingredients out. Without this third step, you may as well not even wash your face. This restores your skin’s natural moisture and will slow down the aging process.
2. Toner: While pores are open from wash, the toner delivers crucial ingredients deeper into the skin. It balances the ph level of your skin, which treats overly oily or dry skin and kills bacteria that is still stuck deep in your pores.
4. SPF: Sun protection is the single most important way to keep skin young and healthy.
Airbrush MAKE UP
UNLIKE TRADITIONAL MAKEUP, airbrushing sprays a fine mist so the makeup blends evenly on the skin. Your foundations provide the flawless coverage of your preference (from sheer to opaque) and minimizes skin imperfections. The result is a beautiful and natural finish. It even can cover up tattoos or unwanted scars. Not only is your skin look flawless but you can feel good about it too.Airbrush make up is Hypoallergenic, Non-Comedogenic, oil, silicon and Paraden free.

CLOTHES ARE NOT ONE SIZE FITS ALL, but some trends are. People come in all shapes and sizes and we all have different body types, so just because something comes in your size does not mean it fits. Some trends are only rail-thin body type friendly, and give us dressing room anxiety. No matter what we try on in that trend, it makes us feel awful. CURVES ARE SEXY! Never feel bad about being shaped like a woman. So leave those trends behind that don’t suit you and move on to something that does. With the 70s being on trend this summer there’s a lot to pick from. Embrace your curves and wear silhouettes that emphasize them. And remember: you can always express your trendy side using accessories.
1. Avoid shapeless or boxy styles. This MACRAME TOP’S V shape helps elongate your torso and distributes your natural curve.
2. Adding 70s inspired accessories is a subtle way to embrace a trend without compromising your curves.

YOU’RE GOING TO A BBQ WITH FRIENDS and every article of clothing you own is tossed to all corners of your bedroom and you still don’t know what you’re going to wear. DON’T FRET. While dressing casually should look effortless we all know effort goes into every outfit we put together. Casual should mean comfortable, but comfort does not have
to mean workout gear, (although we’re definitely guilty of considering yoga pants a bottom option from time to time). This summer put together maxi skirts and tees in bright colors, shorts and plaid shirts, basically anything that makes you feel comfortable and live it up in style at your next back yard soiree.
