2003 ANNUAL REPORT

Message from the President

This last year, planning for the future was the focus of my administration, with many of our efforts coming to gratifying fruition. I am delighted to welcome Dr. William Sanborn Pfeiffer, who comes to Ramapo College as provost/vice president for academic affairs, continuing a distinguished career in teaching, research, service, and administration, most recently as vice president for academic affairs at Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, Georgia. He is already making his mark on Ramapo College. Recently, I was privileged to take part in the announcement of the collaboration between the Meadowlands Environment Center and Ramapo College. I’m very excited about the opportunity this initiative affords Ramapo College to expand on our threedecades-long history as a leader in environmental education and research. While continuing to serve the constituents who already are familiar with the innovative work of the Center, we will extend the Center’s reach to new audiences and under-served populations. Our vision and action plan for the next ten years, the Strategic Plan, was adopted by the Board of Trustees following a broadbased institutional analysis and input from a blue-ribbon commission. This plan represents our blueprint for the future of the College. As a blueprint, it means that we ANNUAL REPORT 2003

must create annual drawings – annual implementation plans – using the Strategic Plan as our guide. I’m proud that Ramapo College is among the 148 colleges and universities nationwide to have signed on to the American Democracy Project, a national initiative designed to increase student involvement in civic life. This three-year effort, supported by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities and The New York Times, aims to prepare our students for citizenship in our democracy and provide them with more opportunities for civic education. More information about the American Democracy Project is available at www.aascu.org. In addition, Ramapo College was the site of a national conference, Global Education and Civic Engagement, held on the campus in June by the Council on Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC). Our beautiful campus and facilities are ideally located for such an event and we will continue to explore opportunities to bring important conferences to our mountainside campus. Despite continued negative economic impacts regarding funding from the state, Ramapo College is thriving and setting the stage for a future that will bring exciting new opportunities for our students. 2003 ANNUAL REPORT

Message from the Ramapo College Board of Trustees

The campus is teeming with construction equipment as we expand our

facilities to serve the needs of our increasingly residential campus population. Construction began in January on the first phase of the $25 million, 116,000 square foot Bill Bradley Sports and Recreation Center, expected to be completed by summer 2004. The second phase, a renovation to the existing athletic center, will be completed in fall 2004.

A new suite-style, 300bed residence hall, under construction up the hill from Kameron Pond, is slated to open in fall 2004. And already on the drawing board, are plans for another residence hall. Students rave about life in The Village, a 528-bed apartment complex that opened last winter. All units are fully sprinklered and furniture meets strict CAL-133 flammability guidelines. Each bedroom is wired for voice/video/data, as is the living/dining area. Residents of The Village must commit

to living in a sustainable manner by recycling and using “green“ cleaning products. In the spring, we dedicated the new commons area in The Village in honor of Florence Thomases, a member of the first Ramapo College Board of Trustees, and the late Fred Thomases. All this construction, while

producing

inconveniences, is evidence of a dynamic institution that is building for the future. Gail Brady Chair, Ramapo College Board of Trustees ■

Ramapo College: POSITIVELY by Priscilla Tovey Van Aulen, ‘86

Ramapo College is positively impacting the surrounding community and the state through a myriad of activities that not only bring people to campus but send Ramapo College faculty and staff beyond the borders of the institution. The College continues to grow as a leading educational and cultural resource in New Jersey. Highly ranked by U.S. News and World Report, The Princeton Review, and Kaplan’s Unofficial, Unbiased Guide to the 328 Most Interesting Colleges, Ramapo College is one of the most selective colleges in the state. Of particular note in recent months is the leadership role the College has taken at the Meadowlands Environment Center (MEC). Under the direction of Dr. Angela Cristini (on the cover) with the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission, the Center is responsible for student and teacher education throughout New Jersey at this environmentally-rich site. In addition, Ramapo College’s leadership role in northern New Jersey can be seen in a wide array of other initiatives including the Governor’s School, the Upward Bound and ROOTS programs, the offerings at the Russ and Angelica Berrie Center for Performing and Visual Arts, and the Bill Bradley Sports and Recreation Center.

In August 2003, Ramapo College partnered with the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission to launch a new education program for the Meadowlands Environment Center. Charged with environmental protection and enhancement, the Commission has been creating public parks and recreation facilities in the Meadowlands for the past twenty-five years. The focus of the Center is to teach children, their parents, teachers, and the wider community about the importance of protecting the Meadowlands and the environment. Dr. Angela Cristini is spearheading the initiative, which will expand the Center’s outreach role and develop new curricula and programs for K-12, undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education students. This program will educate state teachers on using the environment as a classroom. It also promises to expose communities surrounding the center to the resources of the Meadowlands and the important issues affecting the district. “The Meadowlands Environment Center is really a dream come true for Ramapo College,” states Dr. Cristini, whose tremendous enthusiasm and dedication to this project is contagious.

The Environment Center offers an ideal hands-on teaching facility full of organic specimens. Interactive computer programs and displays of birds, wildlife, and plant life abound. Pontoon boat cruises take students through the marsh to study the plants and animals. “Not only do we offer established educational programs for students, but we will design speciallyrequested programs for school districts,” says Cristini. The College is particularly qualified to assume this responsibility given its leadership in the fields of environmental science and studies. According to Robert Ceberio, executive director of the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission, the College’s leader-

and legislators representing branches of the New Jersey government. A recent letter to Susan Rachouh, the program administrator, attests to the quality of the students’ experiences: “Never have I had so much fun, learned so much, and befriended so many people in such a short period of time. I’m going to be bragging about this program to my governor, state senator, and state assemblyman, and thanking them as well!” Ramapo College’s outreach also stretches into the inner cities of Paterson and Newark with its Upward Bound and ROOTS programs (Ramapo Opens Opportunities to Science). Administered by Dr. Carol Frishberg, Upward Bound provides high school students from low-income families with the opportunity to focus intensely on the study of math and science. They spend six weeks on the Ramapo College campus, where they take English, computer, and foreign language classes. According to Dr. Frishberg, “Many of our participants and their parents have never been on a college campus before they come to our program. When they get here, they see that only twenty to forty minutes away from their own neighborhoods there is a beautiful suburban campus where a diverse community of people are working and learning. Access to higher

time we’ve worked with Ramapo College, we have seen the significant impact they’ve had on the number and content of the school programs. They’re doing a much better job than has been done in the past, not only with children but with the teachers. If we can develop an army of children as stewards of the environment, then we’ve done a really good thing here.” For gifted and talented high-school seniors from all over the state, Ramapo College offers the prestigious New Jersey Governor’s School of International Studies. Focused on exposing students to the international challenges facing the world in the 21st century, this month-long program includes courses in human rights, public health, international social issues, economics, and environmental issues, among others. In addition, students spend a week in Quebec City, Canada, learning about the cultural, political and economic realities of the area, while practicing their French language skills. Funded by the State of New Jersey, the program is quite competitive, and applications stream in from all over the state. Speakers and lecturers include Ramapo College faculty, as well as prominent journalists, members of Congress

education becomes more of a reality than a slogan.” Federally-funded, this program provides students with a leg-up on their peers when preparing for college admissions; it includes SAT preparation assistance and takes students on college campus visits. The ROOTS program brings middle-school students to campus where they take classes similar to those in Upward Bound. Funded by the New Jersey Commission on Higher Education, this program encourages students from the Paterson middle schools to participate for the duration of their middle-school years. In addition to summer classes taken on the Ramapo College campus, the students go on science-related trips, to the theater, and other cultural events. Both of these programs motivate students to aspire to and attend college. Many who have attended over the years are now in college.

African Eagle, endangered falcon, and a giant python. Performances take place for grades K-12 and address themes that fit into the state’s core curricular standards. Many local school districts participate including Franklin Lakes, Mahwah, Ringwood, and Ramsey, as well as some in New York State. These performances have been tremendously successful: they regularly sell out the Berrie Center’s 350 seats. In addition, the College offers “living room” performances in the York Room of the Mansion, where you can relax on a Sunday afternoon, while listening to artists from classical to contemporary. Another facility that promises to be a rich resource for the community is the Bill Bradley Sports and Recreation Center. Slated to be one of the best athletic complexes in New Jersey, it will be open for public use and community events when not being used by Ramapo College students and athletes. This enormous center will be the campus hub for sporting events, recreation, and exercise. Included will be a 116,000 square foot arena, fitness center, climbing wall, jogging track, and more. It promises to be the buzz around campus and the community when it’s finished in the fall of 2004. The new athletic center also stands to increase the staggering demand from community members for campus space. According to Pinese Harris, director of College Events and Conferences, “The demand for campus facilities has increased 100 percent since 1995.” Area businesses such as Konica Minolta USA, Inc., UPS, and Pearson Education are regularly here for their meetings and conferences. The beauty of the campus and its facilities provide a welcoming environment for educational and corporate groups alike. Among the organizations in residence at Ramapo College during the summer are the Academy of Music, The Foundation for Free Enterprise, Ridgewood School District, and a variety of sports camps. There is no doubt the College’s leadership role in northern New Jersey continues to significantly expand. Through its partnerships and outreach, Ramapo College offers the greater community a plethora of educational and cultural resources.

In addition, the College continues to offer first-rate performances from artists all over the world. A recent letter from a Ramsey resident to President Smith attests to their quality: “Events at Ramapo College continue to enrich our lives. My husband and I have had a glorious time attending musical, theatrical, and political events at the Berrie Center and the Trustees Pavilion over the past few years. The qualities of the performances and the star attractions you have invited to Ramapo College have set a high cultural standard in the community.” From the Shanghai Quartet to Harold Pinter’s Betrayal, directed by Academy-award winning actress Estelle Parsons, to the lunchtime series, “Art, Food, and Culture,” the diversity of offerings is tremendous. The School Performance Series provides the opportunity for area teachers and those who home-school to bring their students to a variety of educational performances. Among the many programs offered was “The World of Animals and Birds of Prey,” where naturalist Bill Robinson taught students about the importance of animals and birds in the balance of nature. He brought an array of creatures to campus, including an 11

Foundation News Ramapo College and the Ramapo College Foundation continue to experience outstanding gains in garnering support for scholarships, faculty research awards, and capital projects. The partnerships developed between the College, the corporate community, foundations, and individuals make it possible to increase the number of named scholarships each year, while also increasing funding for faculty/student collaborative research projects. The Foundation’s Board of Governors continues its dedication to providing support for educational excellence at Ramapo College, an evolving and emerging institution that relies on assistance from external partners and friends to bring it to the forefront of higher education in New Jersey.

Annual Foundation Golf Outing 15th Annual Foundation Golf Outing Seiko Corporation of America, a Mahwah neighbor of Ramapo College, sponsored the 15th Annual Foundation Golf Outing at the Tuxedo Club. L to R: President Toyoji Todaka, Ron Luino, Tom Rossiter, and Dan Miller.

Linda Dator, Yolla Rahal, Nancy Brotherton, and Alice Palmer enjoyed the day. Under the leadership of golf committee Chair Don Mahoney, more than $64,000 was raised for student scholarships, faculty research, and grants administered by the Foundation for critical College projects.

Business Partners One program that has increasingly benefited the College is the Ramapo College Business Partners. Founded as the Industrial Associates in 1982, it has involved the leadership of corporations in Northern New Jersey and parts of New York in the College’s future. Many corporate representatives have served on the Foundation’s board and generously support Foundation fund raising events and College programs. Board members serve as ambassadors to the region’s business community by introducing faculty and administration to potential supporters of the College’s activities, events, and achievements.

Century 21 Construction, Dinner Sponsor for the 15th Annual Golf Outing was represented by (L to R) Anthony Marino, Carl Mazza, Steve Coppa, and Barry Mandelbaum. Additional sponsors for the event included Sharp Electronics Corporation; BMW of North America, Inc; Howmedica Osteonics; O’Connor, Davies, Munns & Dobbins, LLP; Armistead Mechanical; DialAmerica Marketing; Konica Minolta USA, Inc., and Sony Electronics, Inc.

Participation from the Business Partners continues to grow. During fiscal year 2003, corporations contributed 49 percent of all external support received for the College. Sharp Electronics, Konica Minolta USA, Inc., Sony Electronics, Hudson United Bank, Pearson Education, UPS, and Toys’R Us, through participation in the Business Partners program, continue to support scholarships for students from historically underrepresented groups as well as projects that benefit the campus and community. These corporations have made Ramapo College a priority for their giving programs and the entire College community has benefited. Our Business Partners know that a strong institution of higher education is good for employers, employees, and the general public.

Athletics Round Up Last year, Ramapo College Athletics saw one of the most successful years in the history of the College. During this past year, eleven of the sixteen varsity athletic programs participated in post-season play. For the last four consecutive years, the Roadrunners’ athletics program has also accomplished a win/loss record above .500: in 1999-2000, +24; 2000-2001, +24; 2001-2002, +37, and 2002-2003 +71. Last year they were also +12 in the NJAC for the first time in eight years. Men’s soccer entered the post-season for the tenth year in a row; men’s basketball recorded the best conference record in the history of the program (17-1) standing as regular season champs. They made it to the NCAA Elite Eight, and hosted the regionals for the first time in Ramapo College’s history. Softball also posted the best overall record, 33-7 while adding a program best conference record of 18-0. Their team also hosted the NCAA East Regionals for the first time in the school’s history. Men’s volleyball won the 2003 ECAC South Championship while making their ninth straight appearance at the NECVA Champion Tournament. Ramapo College student-athletes have experienced the same success in the classroom by improving their overall graduation rate from 40 percent to 58 percent.

Parents Advisory Council The Parents Advisory Council (PAC) welcomes all parents of Ramapo College students. During the past year, PAC members volunteered for Freshman Movein Day and Freshman Family Day, and participated in the Annual Fund’s Phonathon. Parent support of scholarships and programs and their enthusiasm for Ramapo College is a fundraising success story. Started just two years ago, the Parents Fund grew from founding PAC members’ initial donations to $9,000 in 2002, and nearly doubled that in 2003. Ramapo College parents generously donate to the Fund so all students can receive a quality education. A PAC informational booth at Freshman Family Day was a popular spot. Parents learned about the many volunteer and giving opportunities for PAC members including admissions, career development, Parents Fund, parents events, and programs.

New Alumni Summer Reunion The New Alumni Summer Reunion was held on July 26th, 2003 at Bar Anticipation in Belmar. On a bright sunny day, alumni had a great time together and left close to midnight. Executive Director’s Message

Recently we honored 188 students who received Foundation Scholarships. It was an incredible evening! At that dinner many of the donors met their scholars and learned how their generosity had a major impact on the student’s lives. Each and every one of you recognized in this Annual Report make that and so much more possible by your generosity. I extend my personal thanks and gratitude to you. Our Board of Trustees, Board of Governors, Alumni Association Board, Friends Board, and Parents Advisory Council have helped Ramapo College

reach new levels of excellence. It is their dedication and their commitment that allows us to bring to fruition the exciting initiatives assigned to the Foundation in the College’s strategic plan, “Enhancing Institutional Excellence.” Many new endowments have been established, alumni participation and support is stronger than ever, faculty grant seeking has increased dramatically, and a new planned giving program has been launched. The support of extraordinary friends like our honorees recognized at the 2004 Distinguished Citizens Dinner--Robert Ceberio, Douglas Dittrick, Frances Hackett, and Robert Striano--makes it possible to create multi-million dollar partnerships that impact thousands of students every year in educational outreach programs at the

Meadowlands Environment Center. It is their generous corporate support that allows us to build much needed facilities such as the new Bill Bradley Sports and Recreation Center. It is their valued leadership that allows us to create new centers such as the Center for Business and Public Policy and the Center for Technology Enhanced Education. And, it is their support of our special events such as the Annual Golf Outing that raises significant unrestricted dollars to fund campus grants. This strategic success and positive momentum would not be possible without support from many alumni, parents, corporations, foundations, faculty, staff and friends who believe so strongly in Ramapo College. We are truly fortunate. Last year our total revenues received were $4,327,999, surpassing the FY’03 goal by 31 percent. Annual giving reached an all-time high and was 12 percent over goal. Special events were 16 percent over goal. We secured the largest restricted gift in the

history of the Foundation. And in addition, the College was awarded a major federal appropriation for the Bill Bradley Sports and Recreation Center. Great things happen at Ramapo College because of great people…we have great leadership, we have a highly credentialed faculty and we have better prepared students in greater numbers than ever. The Foundation is also fortunate--Bernie Milano, our chairman; Robert Tillsley, vice chairman; Rich Conti, secretary, and Ron Luino, treasurer--must all be recognized for their exemplary leadership in achieving these goals. Each committee chair and each member of the Board contributes significantly in their time, talents, and treasure. It is an understatement to say that we are incredibly fortunate at Ramapo College. Please accept my most sincere thanks. Cathleen Davey Executive Director Ramapo College Foundation/Vice President Institutional Advancement ■
