P R E S I D E N T Dr. William Sanborn Pfeiffer any post with credit.” So I’ll start by saying I hope the experiences I’ve had in my life are helping me fill this post with credit – and live up to your expectations and my own.
GOALS 1. Strengthen communication between the administration and the rest of campus.
As I’ve said during my year as provost, I try to follow three guidelines in my career and personal life: set clear and worthy goals, work as hard as I can, and do the right thing. The desire to listen to, and learn from, our colleagues is a principle central to any successful organization, especially a college. And it should start in the president’s office.
2. Increase involvement by the Board of Trustees in all aspects of campus life.
3. Establish a Diversity Initiative with a committee that reports to the president.
4. Redirect funding from administration to instruction where possible.
5. Complete the curriculum revision for starting the Unit Plan.
6. Organize and document all policies and

procedures of the College.
7. Update the Strategic Plan and improve the annual planning process.
Now at the half-way point in my term as interim president, I’m again reminded of a passage from John Henry Newman’s “Idea of a University.” He writes that one purpose of a liberal education is to help individuals “fill
As I looked to my year as interim president, I listed a dozen goals that would direct my efforts. Of course, the list is not complete. Some items may be added and some deleted in the months ahead. But I thought it would be helpful to again offer some goals. Our goals are ambitious. Clearly, I don’t view my interim position as a “caretaker” role. We simply can’t afford to bide our time until a new president arrives. Instead, together we’ll be bold and use the year to build on the success the college has already achieved.
8. Define and strengthen the Office of the Provost.
9. Improve the structure of the academic division.
10. Prepare for Middle States, TEAC, and AACSB accreditation tasks.
11. Plan or open at least three new buildings.
12. Involve the president’s office in raising funds and increasing our visibility.

F R O M T H E B O A R D O F T R U S T E E S The year ended June 30, 2004 was one of dynamic activity for Ramapo College as well as one of transitions. Following the announcement of Dr. Rodney D. Smith’s resignation, searches were begun for both an interim and a new president. The Board was pleased to offer the interim position to Dr. W. Sanborn Pfeiffer, the College’s provost. A comprehensive search committee assisted by Dr. Alice Chandler, Ramapo’s former interim president, was appointed to seek nominations and interview candidates for the presidency.
We moved forward with construction projects that affirm our commitment to building a residential campus. The Overlook residence hall, built to house 300 students in two-bedroom, two-bath suites, was substantially completed during the year. Also nearing the finish line during the year was the Bill Bradley Sports and Recreation Center, with its 2,200seat arena, skybox, jogging track, climbing wall, and premier fitness center. Preliminary plans for another residential facility, Laurel Hall, to be located near Pine and Linden, and for a loop road to encircle the campus were developed. Once again, we achieved record-breaking numbers in enrollment, with applications for admission up 16 percent, class rank for incoming freshmen in the top 19 percent,
SAT scores averaging 1164 and retention from first to second year of 89.1 percent. Recognition for these successes recently came from U.S.News & World Report, which now ranks Ramapo College number one among public comprehensive colleges in the north, and in the top tier for all comprehensive colleges in the region.

F R O M T H E F O U N D AT I O N B O A R D O F G O V E R N O R S As the 2003-2004 year unfolded, the Ramapo College Foundation’s partnership with the Meadowlands Environment Center (MEC) grew. Through this $3.4 million collaboration the College provided all educational programs at the MEC in Lyndhurst, New Jersey. If you attended “Riverfest” in June, you were among the 10,000 guests who saw first-hand the value of this partnership. The Board of Governors took steps this year to launch an impressive planned giving program, and create a Legacy Society. Planned gifts are charitable contributions made through
bequests, endowments, trusts, and other longterm instruments. Under the capable direction of Millicent Anisfield, a committee was formed, met, and set goals to accomplish through 2007. Already, planned giving publications are in progress, and a new interactive Web site has been designed to demonstrate benefits to donors. As well, a special dinner was held to recognize those who have given the College an endowment or bequest. Once again the Annual Fund broke all records in 2003-2004. Gifts and pledges from alumni, faculty, staff, board members, and friends of the College were 23 percent over goal, providing additional support for student scholarships, faculty grants, and other campus projects. Fundraising for the Bill Bradley Sports and Recreation Center garnered $615,105 in new gifts, and a federal appropriation brought another $238,000 for the building.
Participation in the Foundation’s special events -- the CIT Distinguished Citizens Dinner, the Annual Golf Outing, and the Performing Arts and Dinner Series -- secured over $315,000 in unrestricted revenue for the College. I would like to thank my colleagues on the Board of Governors, alumni, Friends of Ramapo, and College and Foundation staff for their hard work and dedication on behalf of Ramapo. I am proud to be part of this growing, exciting institution.

lective, or Less Selective. Ramapo College has been placed in the category of More Selective, sharing this distinction with other New Jersey colleges like Drew University and The College of New Jersey.
You may have heard that in U.S.News and World Report’s America’s Best Colleges 2005 edition, Ramapo College ranks number one among public comprehensive colleges in the north. This is excellent news, as we continue our trend of attracting well-prepared students to the freshman class. I have been asked several times about the criteria used by the magazine to determine our ranking, as some consider magazine rankings to be arbitrary. While this is oftentimes the case, Ramapo College’s strong standing in U.S.News is justified.
Over the past several years, Ramapo College’s first to second-year retention rate has increased sharply to nearly 90 percent (the published rate is 87 percent; the current rate is 89.1 percent). This far exceeds national, public college first to second-year persistence, and places Ramapo in a category with highly competitive colleges and universities. A 90 percent retention rate is generally considered the mark of an outstanding academic institution, and each year Ramapo College inches closer and closer toward this plateau.
Among the most important criteria used by the magazine are admission selectivity, SAT scores, number of students in the top 25 percent of their high school graduating class, first to second-year retention rate, peer assessment, graduation rate, and the percentage of alumni who give back to their institution.
Strong retention is what ultimately leads to improved graduation rates. While Ramapo’s reported graduation rate of 54 percent (presently 62 percent) is higher than the national average of 50 percent, U.S.News and World Report only places the College’s rate at 50 percent, thanks in large part to an unusual weighted system used by the magazine. While they are not forthcoming with the exact method used to formulate these rates, the magazine states that it utilizes a combination of the reported
In regard to admission selectivity, Ramapo College admitted 43 percent of the applicants for the class of 2003 (admission data used by the magazine was for the high school graduating class that year; Ramapo College’s current rate is 40 percent). This represents an increase in the academic preparedness level that an incoming Ramapo College student is expected to possess. The acceptance rate is clearly driven by the percent of students who graduate high school in the top 25 percent of their class (Ramapo’s rate is 68 percent) and the 25th through 75th percentile SAT range of entering students (Ramapo’s is 1060-1230). These three factors combined help U.S.News identify schools as Most Selective, More Selective, Se-
increased drastically over the last ten years, it is tricky to comprehend what other institutions think of us. Our peer assessment rating is created by taking into account the review of Ramapo College by other “public comprehensive college” presidents and enrollment managers. Our rating of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale is solid, but not spectacular. It would be expected that an institution which has improved so dramatically in a number of critical categories would be rated higher by administrators at peer colleges, but the high number of schools in the north, coupled with the low visibility of state colleges to leaders in other states, keeps Ramapo’s peer assessment at a level not representative of a school that has enjoyed our success. While there are some additional criteria -- like student to faculty ratio, average spending per student, and the percentage of classes under twenty and over fifty students -- used to formulate rankings, the final significant category utilized by U.S.News and World Report is the alumni giving rate. This number is calculated by the percentage of a college’s total alumni base who donate to the institution. The average dollar amount is not calculated by the magazine, but the rate of giving is critical to our ranking. Ramapo College’s published rate of 8 percent (currently 10 percent) is comparable to our peer group, but lower than the national average. A public college with a 15 percent or greater giving rate would be considered strong, so I ask fellow alumni to join me in giving whatever dollar amount you are capable of donating in order to increase the percentage of alumni participation.
“Strong retention is what ultimately leads to improved graduation rates.” graduation rates of colleges and U.S.News’ predicted rate of student completion at a specific university. Whatever the magazine’s method, Ramapo College is improving in this regard faster than the magazine’s prediction. Peer assessment is a difficult category to both improve upon and understand. While the public perception of Ramapo College has certainly
Ramapo College is on the right track. We as a community have always known that Ramapo College is a special place. Now, with our number one rating in U.S.News and World Report, the remainder of the region is recognizing it, too.
