RAMAPO COLLEGE OF NEW JERSEY

DR. GEORGE T. POTTER 1969-1983

president

dR. peteR p. MeRCeR To the Graduating Class of 2019,

I offer my wholehearted congratulations to you on your graduation. It is remarkable to reflect on the historic moments we have shared both locally on our own campus and nationally as your future unfolds before you.

ROBERT A. SCOTT

1985-2000

As significant forces change the national higher education landscape and the campus grounds continue to evolve, it is important that the value of a Ramapo liberal arts education persists. As economic uncertainties endure, the ability to think analytically and critically, to speak concisely and cogently, and to write effectively are essential skills in the ever-changing twenty-first century. I thank you for your contributions to both the curricular and extracurricular vibrancy of our campus. Your inquiry, talent, and character have invigorated the Ramapo campus and continue to strengthen our reputation. It is a privilege for me to personally congratulate you at the 2019 Arching and Commencement Ceremonies. I trust your Ramapo College experience will provide a foundation for a rich and fulfilling life, and I wish you success in all your endeavors.

Sincerely, D r . P e t e r P. M e r c e r 14

CONTEMPORARY ARTS

deAn peteR CAMpBeLL The school of Contemporary Arts provides an understanding of the established traditions in the fine Arts and Communication Arts while simultaneously preparing students to embrace new means of expression. the school, which is inherently interdisciplinary in its structure and its goals, recognizes the interconnectedness of the arts in contemporary society, and encourages students to develop and communicate ideas in multiple media. excellent instruction in the visual, communication, theatrical, and musical arts takes place in small studio, lab, seminar, and discussion settings, as well as through activities outside the classroom environment. practical experience, public presentation, and reflection are integrated into the educational process in many ways, such as through required Internships, theater production, musical performance and recording, visual arts production and exhibition, and the production and viewing of video, film, and design. the school’s faculty are dedicated teachers, nationally known for their artistic and professional achievements and scholarly work. Many have won awards from such major art funding sources as the national endowment for the Arts, the national endowment for the Humanities, the Guggenheim Memorial foundation, and the Kellogg foundation. In addition to the full-time faculty, the school attracts many working artists and media professionals to teach as adjunct faculty, serve as guest directors and designers, or to inspire our students as artists in residence. Because of our small class sizes, these top-notch faculty are able to mentor students closely and help them realize their artistic and professional potential and goals. the school of Contemporary Arts offers five majors: Communication Arts, Music, theater, Visual Arts, and the Contemporary Arts Contract Major (an interdisciplinary major that enables students to develop individualized programs that emphasize such special interests and career goals as arts management, music industry, and art therapy). these programs lead to the Bachelor of Arts degree. Minors are available in Music and theater

18

Contemporary Arts students are actively involved with “the Ramapo news, the college newspaper, WRpR (90.3 fM), the college radio station, and RCtV, the student club for television/video production. others participate in the Ramapo Chorale, the Gospel Chorus, the Concert Band or other of our music ensembles. there is also an a capella group on campus, an active theater Honors society (AYo), and an improv troupe open to all students. for students interested in Visual Arts, the Visual Artists society has opportunities for collaborations and exhibitions. Many students hold paid positions that support the work of the school, such as Art Gallery monitors, computer lab technicians and monitors, film/video studio and equipment check-out staff, and costume shop and scenery shop technicians. In addition, many students are hired each year to support professional performing arts events as theater technicians, box office staff and ushers. the school is housed in the Angelica and Russ Berrie Center for performing and Visual Arts, featuring state-ofthe-art theater, music, and visual arts spaces, and in newly renovated facilities in C and H buildings, which provide a professional quality television studio and the newly-opened Les paul recording studio, digital imaging and writing labs, an editing lab, a field production classroom, and private editing suites. Additionally, the school occupies a freestanding sculpture studio complex. students benefit from the professional performing arts programming on campus which include music, dance, and theater performances in the sharp theater, and from the visual arts exhibitions in the college Art Galleries, which focus on contemporary art in changing exhibitions, and which feature one of the foremost collections of works from the Americas and the Caribbean in the permanent collection. the school of Contemporary Arts requires all students to engage in Internships and Cooperative education experiences. external placements are facilitated in graphic and Web design, print and digital journalism, radio, television and film production, professional theater, art galleries, museums and more. organizations where our students have been placed include Google, Comedy Central, Minolta, sharp electronics, sony, nBC, Wnet-tV, WABC-tV, the Bergen Record, American Museum of natural History, Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Roundabout theater Company, the Joseph papp public theater, and others. In addition to hands-on training, students receive degree credits for their experiences.

susAn HAnGen the salameno school of Humanities and Global studies aims to create a holistic educational experience that enables our students to become literate, intentional, and empowered global citizens who are prepared, not only in specific recognized fields, but also in interdisciplinary dialogue. through our varied offerings (including Africana studies, Anthropology, American studies, History, International studies, Literature, philosophy, political science, Liberal studies, and World Languages), we seek to enhance students’ understanding and appreciation of the complex cultural, political, and imaginative dimensions of human existence. faculty members’ teaching, service, and scholarly or creative achievement combine to help students develop their powers of reasoning, speaking, writing, and creativity, thus equipping them for the challenges of contemporary life. the school’s faculty members are dedicated to teaching and scholarship, have traveled extensively and studied abroad, and have backgrounds in world languages, humanities, and social sciences. ssHGs co-curricular activities are designed to supplement and enhance classroom and academic learning and to educate and inform the college community. programs include the Gross Center for Holocaust and Genocide studies, which organizes events focused on the history of the Holocaust and the prevention of genocide and human rights violations; the Jane Addams papers project, in which students contribute to the goal of publishing a digital edition of Jane Addams’ correspondence and writings from 1901-1935; the Readings at Ramapo Visiting Writers series, which brings to campus nationally recognized writers; and

our curriculum is designed to enhance students’ skills in critical reading and writing, effective communication, problem solving, and leadership. It is also designed to improve students’ global and cross-cultural understanding and give them the intellectual and practical foundation to become successful in their careers and further studies. thousands of students have graduated from ssHGs and its predecessors and have pursued careers in law, consulting, management, government, journalism, publishing, community organizing, public interest advocacy, marketing, public relations, teaching, and other fields.

SCHOOL OF BUSINESS diversity, integrity and continuous improvement—are manifest in our teaching, research, and service to the College and community. the school offers seven undergraduate majors: B.s. in Accounting, B.s. in Marketing, B.s. in finance, B.s. in Management, B.A. in economics, B.s. in Information technology Management, and B.A. in International Business. the school offers minors in Accounting, economics, Information technology Management, and International Business as well as a Business essentials Certificate for nonbusiness majors. At the graduate level, the Anisfield school of Business offers an accelerated, 20-month leadershipfocused M.B.A. program designed for working professionals, and a “4 + 1” B.s. to M.s in Accounting, in which students complete both their undergraduate and graduate degrees in just five years.

deAn

edWARd petKus the Anisfield school of Business provides comprehensive learning experiences in the business disciplines and in the human skills necessary for a rewarding life and career. our students approach their business studies from both a macro and micro perspective; they develop both rational and emotional intelligence; they develop both analytical and creative skills; and they learn to balance profitability with sustainability. In addition to a strong foundation in the business disciplines, the Anisfield school of Business provides a strong liberal arts and interdisciplinary foundation to broaden the student’s perspective and intellectual abilities. In the spring of 2006, the original Ramapo College school of Administration and Business was renamed the Anisfield school of Business in recognition of the generous gifts of the Anisfield family. since 2010, the Anisfield school of Business has been accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate schools of Business. AACsB accreditation ensures that we are fulfilling our mission: to provide students with a strong educational foundation for a lifetime of learning and for career achievement as responsible contributors and leaders, within a supportive learning environment where engaged faculty bridge theory and practice. AACsB accreditation also ensures that our core values—academic excellence, professionalism, and learning-by-doing,

24

Academic advisement, career guidance, and professional development are integrated throughout a student’s years at Ramapo College. the AsB Cahill Career development Center assists students in finding internships and co-ops during their undergraduate experience, and relevant full-time employment—the first step in building fulfilling careers— upon graduation. the Career Center also administers our Career pathways program (required for graduation), which provides students with skills/interests assessment, resume preparation, and interviewing skill development. outside of the classroom, our students are heavily involved in major-specific clubs, as well as Alpha Kappa psi (co-ed business fraternity), enACtus (social entrepreneurship organization), the Roadrunner financial Group student Investment Club, the entrepreneurship Club, and clubs for every discipline, and three professionally-oriented honor societies: Beta Gamma sigma, omicron delta epsilon, and Beta Alpha psi.

1STEP

ARMENIAN STUDENT ASSOCIATION

1Step is a student organization and outreach arm for localized sustainability, environmental issues, and to help further the Ramapo Green initiative at Ramapo College of New Jersey. Ascertaining that Ramapo meets its commitment to carbon-neutrality remains the main focus. We also act as a bridge between the Climate Commitment Task Force and the general campus community. Based upon the guiding principles of feasible solutions, service, awareness, and collaboration, 1Step aims to recruit a diverse and passionate body of members that embrace sustainable development. Just like nature itself, our organization is constantly evolving and adapting to the unique needs and desires of the Ramapo community and its constituents.

ASL Club is open to all students wanting to learn American Sign Language, no matter their skill level. They host different events to creatively teach and inform others about ASL, all while having fun.

The Armenian Student Association promotes the Armenian culture and expands the awareness of current issues affecting Armenians everywhere.

Our objective as the Black Student Union is to unite all the Black, Latino, Asian, and other ethnicity families to spread diversity, maintain, and promote active communication and interaction between all students, faculty, and staff on campus. The Black Student Union is the umbrella of the following clubs: Brothers Making a Difference, Ebony Women for Social Change, Organization of Latino Unity, and Students of Caribbean Ancestry.

ASL CLUB

BLACK STUDENT UNION

Each organization is to create, educate, and empower an environment that promotes the mission of the Black Student Union, to encourage the involvement of African Diaspora in mainstream campus activities and arrangements, to support the incoming students as they integrate into the campus environment, and to communicate with other BSU members on and off campuses.

CULTURE CLUB

EBONY WOMEN FOR SOCIAL CHANGE

108

The club dedicates itself to the enhancement of all cultures of the global community. Club members explore the uniqueness of cultures through various activities, including guest speakers and an annual Cultural Exhibit, which represents several countries and invites members of the campus community to participate by bringing their own items for display. They enjoy cultural trips to ethnic neighborhoods and visit ethnic restaurants. The Culture Club also publishes “The Cultural Journal,” a magazine published twice a year. Editors accept essays, poems, anecdotes, recipes, photos, personal narratives and other forms of writing; all submissions of cultural importance are welcome.

FASA is dedicated to promoting and encouraging Filipino-American culture on campus. Members organize and sponsor events that provide an awareness of Filipino culture and history.

Ebony Women for Social Change strives to make social change happen, while providing a fun and friendly environment for members. The organization’s purpose is to promote social change inside and outside Ramapo College while supporting members as they work to better themselves socially, academically and spiritually. Weekly meetings are held to discuss business and plan multiple events that promote African ancestry and provide opportunities to socialize. Events include trivia nights, themed nights, ice skating trips, guest speakers, educational workshops and fundraisers.

Fusion Dance Crew (formally known as the hip hop dance club) was established in March of 2009. Our style of dance is mainly hip hop but we also incorporate other dance techniques. We perform at as many events as possible on campus by collaborating with other clubs & organizations.

GARDEN CLUB

GLOBAL ROADRUNNERS

110

The Garden Club is a place where you can connect and get involved with things that grow. They manage the student-run garden on campus and help manage the Wildflower Meadow.

Golden Key International Honour Society’s mission is to enable members to realize their potential through the advancement of academics, leadership, and service.

The Global Roadrunners are a group of study abroad alumni who come together to share knowledge and awareness of International Education on Ramapo’s campus. They act as peer mentors to prospective and outgoing study abroad students.

OLU was created to unite students of diverse Latino heritages. This organization allows Latinos to come together and celebrate their similarities. Along with learning about the backgrounds of Latinos, the members of the organization plan various exciting and educational activities. OLU also serves as the political voice for Latino student issues and as a support system for students by creating an environment where they can work together to bring the Latino experience to Ramapo. Members seek to provide everyone on campus with an opportunity to learn about the Latino culture.

PEER FACILITATORS

PEP BAND

112

The peer facilitation program fosters a sense of community among first-year students by connecting them with upper-class mentors who, not long ago, were new to ramapo themselves. Through exercises in self-reflection, team building, trust and acceptance, peers pass on their knowledge to ease the transition to college life, enhance the first-year experience and immerse students in the ramapo community. The program provides new students with direction, a sense of what to expect during their first few months and a network of support that extends beyond the classroom.

Pi Sigma Alpha is the national political science honor society. The criteria for membership are at least 15 credits in political science courses (at least one of them at the 300 level), a 3.5 grade point average in political science, a 3.2 overall grade point average, and at least 64 credits total completed in college. The student does not need to have declared a Political Science major or minor to qualify.

Roadrunner Pep Band is a new musical ensemble on campus that usually plays at sporting events with the goal of “pepping” up and entertaining the crowd. Different from a traditional “marching band”, this kind of instrumentalist group stays in the stands and cheers on the home team from there.

The Ramapo Disc Club is Ramapo’s very own ultimate frisbee team. We practice twice a week and travel to other schools for tournaments on the weekends. All are welcome!

RAMAPO MUSIC CLUB

RAMAPO NEWS

114

The Ramapo Music Club is a vibrant student organization that is dedicated to creating an active music scene on the Ramapo campus. Students receive valuable music industry experience through the club’s extensive activities, which include producing large scale live concerts, weekly open mic nights, music instructional workshops, and collaborating with the Music faculty on the presentation of the annual Les Paul Festival. The musical genres the club presents are diverse, ranging from indie rock and punk to jazz and EDM. RMC maintains its own inventory of musical instruments and sound equipment, and provides hands on opportunities for Music Production majors in the field of live audio engineering and recording.

Relay For Life is a committee branched off of Colleges Against Cancer, dedicated to the planning, organization and execution of the Relay For Life overnight walk. We work together with the American Cancer Society to raise funds toward cancer research, mission and advocacy, and patient care services.

Want to see your name in print? The Ramapo News is the studentrun newspaper, presenting news, features, and items of interest to the community. Students involved in the club gain experience and insight into all phases of print journalism: reporting, editing, photography, editorial writing, management, marketing and graphic design. Whether you’re majoring in journalism or just like to write, the Ramapo News is always looking for ideas and stories relevant to campus life. They hold meetings twice a week for ideas and production.

Interested in social work but need to find out more about your options? This organization seeks to acquaint students with the Social Work Program at Ramapo College and the social work professional community. Members work to expand the social consciousness of the college community and meet weekly and often invite guest speakers to inform members on new ideas and potential projects. Members are involved in community service activities, such as Ramapo Readers – a book drive for NJ public school libraries and students – an eyeglass collection for South African artists, a clothing drive for residents of local homeless shelters and a gift wrapping fundraiser.

RELAY FOR LIFE

SOCIAL WORK CLUB

115

SPANISH CLUB

STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION

116

This organization seeks to increase understanding about the Spanish language and culture.

The purpose of S.O.C.A is to promote a better understanding of Caribbean people, culture, history, and politics for its members and the entire student body via weekly meetings and programs. We seek to include ALL people of Caribbean Ancestry. We also hope to serve as a vehicle to erasing some of the myths that people have about us, and to promote the concept of a unified Caribbean, all sharing in and appreciating each other’s unique culture.

See something at Ramapo that needs to be fixed? You can either ask someone in SGA to help get it done – or be part of SGA and help make that change! SGA is an association that serves and represents the student body through effective and responsible leadership on matters relevant to the quality of student life. Elected members work as liaisons between students, the administration and faculty. General student body support and active participation are necessary for an effective student government, so members are sure to make themselves known to students. SGA also provides fun events and activities to unite students. Weekly meetings are open to everyone on campus and elections for various positions are held throughout the year.

This group is responsible for capturing the year’s events through the use of photographs, art work, and creative writing. All students, regardless of their experience, are encouraged to join.
