amapo College of New Jersey has received accreditation for its Master of Social Work (MSW) program, effective through February 2022. “The goal of our program is to prepare social work professionals to further advocate for social justice and individual well-being, while emphasizing the human compassion component,” said AnnMarie Moreno, Assistant Dean and Director of the MSW Program at Ramapo College. “As advanced generalist practitioners, students will become effective leaders through planning and problem solving, interdisciplinary collaboration, and excellence in service to individuals, families, groups and organizations from a global perspective.” Ramapo College offers a MSW degree that is affordable and prestigious, combining a rigorous and innovative

“Students do their field experience in private and public assistant living facilities, hospice centers, mobile units employed for home visitation services, group counseling and one-on-one client sessions,” Moreno explained. They also can apply to travel abroad for fieldwork. Students have traveled to Ghana, where they worked in conjunction with the College’s nursing students in rural villages, and to Portugal where they studied policy change on public health issues such as the decriminalization of substance abuse. “This gives them a real sense of the global impact their work can have, and how they can make a difference,” Moreno said. Aaron Lorenz, Dean of the School of Social Sciences and Human Services, touted the hard work Moreno and the faculty undertook in earning the prestigious accreditation for the program. “This accreditation is not given lightly,” he said. “The application process was very involved but we passed with flying colors. This is truly a testament to the tremendous work we do here in this program.”

RAMAPO COLLEGE AND TOURO COLLEGE OF PHARMACY CREATE NEW FAST TRACK PROGRAM PATH

R

amapo College and Touro College of Pharmacy (TCOP) in Harlem, N.Y., have created a new pre-pharmacy program that will allow qualified students to earn both bachelor’s and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees in seven years. The program is designed to put students on a fast track, saving time and cost. “Ramapo College is thrilled to enter into a partnership with Touro College of Pharmacy,” said Edward Saiff, Dean of the School of Theoretical and Applied Science at Ramapo College. “Students interested in a career in pharmacy will be able to begin their studies here at Ramapo and then move on to the Touro campus in New York City for their professional studies. Pharmacists are integral to any health care team and this partnership will offer Ramapo College students interested in the many dimensions of pharmacy a path to a wonderful career.”

liberal arts college in carrying out TCOP’s vital mission to develop the next generation of pharmacists dedicated to promoting wellness, especially among underserved populations in Harlem and beyond.” Under the articulation agreement, Ramapo agrees to provide counseling, advising and resources to students in the Program. Students admitted to TCOP must satisfactorily complete their first year of pharmacy school to obtain their bachelor’s degree from Ramapo.

Students are eligible to apply to TCOP during their third year at Ramapo, at the end of which they will be required to have completed pre-requisites in science, math, and economics with cumulative GPAs of 3.0 and science GPAs of 2.75. Favorable recommendations, a personal interview at TCOP, completion of the Pharmacy College Admissions Test, and submission of a formal application through the Pharmacy College Application Service are also required. Successful candidates will complete their studies in seven years rather than the eight years usually needed to complete both. Admission to the new program does not guarantee admission to the pharmacy school.

PORTUGAL VISIT EXPANDS STUDENT VIEWS ON SUBSTANCE USE Accompanied by Stephanie Sarabia, Associate Professor of Social Work and instructor for the course and Kathleen Ray, Assistant Professor of Social Work, students met with members of Portugal’s Parliament, intervention and treatment centers, an institution for drug use monitoring, and a police organization who each provided insight into Portugal’s decriminalization of drug use. “The approach is to view substance use as an illness with human dignity always at the cornerstone of policy-making,” stated Sarabia. “Moving drug use policy-making from under the Ministry of Justice to the Ministry of Health allows for substance users to receive a summons to appear before a qualified team with the expertise to provide the correct recommendation, or a referral if needed, so the person’s health may be improved,” she added. Focused on harm reduction, Portugal offers strategically located “methadone buses” to give convenient access to those in treatment. The data supports the success of the Portugal drug use decriminalization policies. Annual overdose deaths from drugs have dropped to double digits since the inception of the policy in 2001. By contrast, the U.S. had more than 72,000 deaths last year from drug overdoses. Ramapo Social Work Professors Stephanie Sarabia and Kathleen Ray, with social work students

A

dozen Ramapo College students attended the College’s second experiential trip to Portugal to learn about the practical implications of decriminalizing drug use in that country. The learning experience was coordinated with students who were taking Advanced Topics Addressing Substance Use Disorders as an elective course as part of their Social Work bachelor’s and master’s programs and the Substance Use Disorders minor.

“This international study permits students to witness the macro level of policies put into practice while examining how these policies directly impact people’s lives. In doing so, through journaling and writing reports and essays, an important outcome of the trip is that the experience often encourages students to become more civically engaged,” added Sarabia. In collaboration with the Roukema Center for International Education, the College partnered with the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) to organize the visits across the students’ one week of spring break.

MSW SUCCESS STORY GABRIELLE QUINONES “Ramapo’s MSW program has allowed me to fulfill my life goal of giving back to the community and making a difference in other’s lives. With the MSW program I was able to go Africa for two weeks in May 2016 and network with social workers in a third world country. One of my most memorable memories of that trip was going to the Kumasi Street Children’s Project, which is a Catholic Charity organization in Africa. They provide assistance to displaced children and families. I absolutely loved spending time with the children as well the staff there. The experience really opened my eyes and reminded me of why I love the field of social work. It truly has been a ‘dream come true.’ I never thought I would be able to get my Master’s, but with the help of the faculty and staff I am doing it!” Gabrielle Quinones ’17 earned her Master’s in Social Work at Ramapo. Gabrielle has earned a Child Advocacy Certificate, is part of Phi Alpha Honor Society and traveled to Ghana, Africa while at Ramapo.

NURSING STUDENTS GAIN REAL-WORLD CLINICAL SHIFT EXPERIENCE Undergraduate nursing students are getting more than a taste of what it’s like to work in a hospital setting. Through a program coordinated between Ramapo College faculty and Valley Hospital nursing administration, students who are in their senior year of studies are putting in full 12-hour clinical shifts on patient floors in the Ridgewood-based medical center. Formerly, students logged 6-hour shifts during their clinical training. The 12-hour shifts are the reality they will often experience in their future positions. In the Dedicated Education Unit (DEU) – at Valley, it’s the Cardiac Step-Down Unit -- students work with staff nurses to gain experience in all that is required during a regular shift, from 7 a.m. check-in, reviewing patient charts, administering medications and assessing patient care. They also experience interacting with physicians, patients’ family members, and completing end-of-day reports at 7 p.m. to prepare the night shift staff. “This experience is invaluable for these students,” said Kathleen Burke, Assistant Dean of Nursing at Ramapo College. “They are learning first-hand real patient care under the supervision of experienced nurses, and this cannot be taught in the classroom. The students are tired at the end of a shift but they’re getting real-life experience and a head start when the time comes to look for a job.” Burke said students also get a real feel for another aspect of nursing, namely patient interaction, an important skill set for their future jobs. “Nursing is also about care and compassion. These students are learning, in a real setting, what it takes to be an outstanding nurse,” she added. Currently, six students per clinical day are “on duty” with three Valley staff nurses. The goal of the nursing program is that all senior students have a DEU experience. There are Ramapo College students participating in a similar program in two dedicated units at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson.

TAKE THE NEXT STEP IN NURSING: RN TO BSN PROGRAMS ABOUT THE PROGRAM At Ramapo we believe nurses like you have the power to change lives and that guiding patients to better health is your calling. And a bachelor of science in nursing will help you do what you do best – help people and improve patient care.

WHY RAMAPO?

The RN/BSN program at Ramapo College focuses on furthering the professional education of the associate or diploma-prepared nurse by offering you a hybrid, mostly online program that fits into your busy life. Our program is mostly online with some on-site experiences that may be required. Some electives are offered on-campus in a classroom; all nursing requirements are offered only through an online format. Students may complete the RN/BSN curriculum at their own pace in an organized 18-month completion plan, as agreed upon with the Assistant Dean of Nursing. Our program is one of the most affordable, flexible and highly regarded BSN programs in the tristate area. For most students, the RN/BSN program is a 65-credit (with 4-4-credit courses per semester), twoyear-full-time program. For working nurses, the program can be completed in a part-time format. If you want to gain new insights into the issues that impact patient care, this program is for you.

PARTNERSHIPS AND ARTICULATION AGREEMENTS

We offer passionate and experienced faculty who have real-world nursing experience, who love and are committed to developing their students into confident, highly sought after nursing professionals.

Ramapo College has partnered with Rockland Community College (RCC) in Suffern, N.Y., Bergen Community College (BCC) in Paramus, N.J., and County College of Morris (CCM) in Randolph, N.J. to offer community college Nursing students certain advantages and accelerated formats to complete their BSN degree through an articulation agreement with each of the community college Nursing AAS programs. You can review the agreements and accelerated curriculum maps at www.ramapo.edu/nursing/rn

WHY SHOULD YOU EARN A BSN NOW? Nurses have promising career prospects in New Jersey: statistical analysis conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows nurses in the state are consistently paid more than their national peers and that the state employs more nurses per capita than the U.S. as a whole, with the number of available nursing jobs steadily increasing. This is good news for New Jersey RNs, but an anticipated shortfall in nurses with advanced training should be of special interest. The Institute of Medicine has called for 80 percent of working nurses to have a BSN by 2020. In order to qualify for magnet status, 100 percent of a hospital’s nurse managers must have a BSN or advanced degree.

Our program is rich in resources. Our long-standing partnership with Valley Hospital is a source of pride.

Now is the best time to earn a BSN degree, especially through Ramapo College. PAYSCALE.COM reported that the median annual salary of nurses with a BSN was $75,000 compared with $59,130 as the median annual salary of nurses with an RN.

TUITION AND COST Current Tuition and Costs can be found at www.ramapo.edu/student-accounts/costinfo/ Ramapo offers financial aid, payment plans, and cooperates with Employer Reimbursement Plans.

ONE GRADUATE HAS THIS TO SAY: “Work experiences alone are not enough to deliver high-quality patient care. As diagnoses get more complicated and treatments become more complex, it is important to maintain knowledge on current trends and practices. When it was time for me to further my professional education after eight years on the job, I knew Ramapo College was the right choice for me. The RN to BSN curriculum was mostly online which was favorable for someone working full time. The professors are approachable and show genuine interest in my success. When I decided to pursue my MSN degree, I knew Ramapo College was once again the right choice for me. I have no doubt I am receiving a high-quality, unparalleled education.”

– Zorab Fernandez ’18 received his BSN and is currently enrolled in Ramapo College’s MSN in Nursing Education. Zorab was a staff nurse at Hackensack University Medical Center since 2007 and joined Valley Hospital in 2010 where he is an Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) and a recipient of the DAISY award.

Our program includes approaches to nursing as a global, interdisciplinary field.

The Adler Center for Nursing Excellence provides a brand new, state-of-the-art 39,000 sq. ft. facility including a simulation lab.

HOW DOES A DIPLOMA NURSE GO BACK TO COLLEGE? RN/BSN SUCCESS STORY “Valley Hospital’s partnership with Ramapo College is an important strategy in re-tooling and keeping nursing careers relevant while fueling the beautiful tapestry of nursing’s art and science. My BSN through Ramapo College illuminated the broader world of ‘Caring-Compassion & Empathy’ that extends beyond nursing. College takes you to a deeper understanding of humanity, social justice, and experiences that guide health, culture, environment, and self-reflection.”

- Mary C. Sudano ’06, MSN/Ed, RN-BC, HNB-BC received her Bachelor’s of Nursing in Education from Ramapo College and her online MSN in Education in 2001. Mary is the Valley Hospital Manager of Same Day Surgery, Post Anesthesia Care Unit, & Surgical Family Representatives. She is credentialed in Faith Community Nursing and takes her works into the church as a Deaconess.

We believe in flexible scheduling because most of our students are working full-time while earning their degree. Courses start in winter, spring, summer, and fall.

NEUROSCIENCE STUDIES

For a Broad Range of Careers

W

hen Ramapo College introduced a minor in Neuroscience two years ago, there were 19 students in the program. Last year, the number increased to more than 50 students and enrollment is continuing to grow as the field evolves as a valuable course of study into other areas of career opportunities. “Neuroscience is an interdisciplinary field that affects many, many aspects of study,” said Naseem Choudhury, Associate Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience in the College’s School of Social Science and Human Services (SSHS).

The Neuroscience minor comprises coursework in psychology, biology, neuropsychology, behavioral and cognitive neuroscience, genetics, chemistry, neuropsychopharmacology, and includes lab work and hands-on applications. These subjects are becoming increasingly more relevant to the contemporary arts, communication disciplines and teaching, among others. For more information, visit www.ramapo.edu/majors-minors/majors/ neuroscience/

“What makes Ramapo’s program so strong is the research that faculty is bringing to the students…” - NASEEM CHOUDHURY Associate Professor

Neuroscience focuses on the study of the mind, brain and behavior. Students in the minor will gain an understanding of the organization of the nervous system as well as an appreciation of how the physical relates to the mental and emotional behaviors in humans and animals. Among the areas of study include neurological disorders and diseases of the spine, brain and the nerves that connect them, such as brain tumors, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease and stroke, as well as Alzheimer’s disease, Huntington’s disease, dyslexia and attention deficit disorders. “What makes Ramapo’s program so strong is the research that faculty is bringing to the students, who will have the ability to analyze data and explore the interaction between neural structure and function via the brain’s relation to behaviors such as motor control, basic sensory processes, higher cognition and emotional processing,” said Choudhury, adding that major theories of brain-behavior relations, including learning perception and cognitive neuroscience will be studied, as well. “The misconception of this minor is that students will only gain from it if they are planning to pursue a career in medicine or health-related field,” she noted. “That way of thinking is rapidly changing. More and more employers – across a broad range of industries – are finding this type of knowledge to be valuable.” According to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Statistics, career opportunities involving a neuroscience background include audiology, physical and occupational therapy, genetic counseling, substance abuse counseling, orthotics and prosthetics, and health education.

Students assess research data from EEG studies.

SUCCESS STORY NICOLE AMADA Nicole Amada, graduated in 2017, with a degree in Psychology and a minor in Neuroscience and will attend City University of New York’s Ph.D. program: Cognition, Language, and Development where she will conduct investigations in cognitive control and motivation. “Studying neuroscience at Ramapo College has opened my mind to the underlying mechanisms of human psychology. The courses and professors have excited and prepared me for the challenging field of neuroscience research. After taking my first course in neuroscience, I decided to study abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark where I was able to conduct my own study and present at the symposium at Ramapo. The knowledge and experience I have acquired at Ramapo provided me with the foundation I needed to get into graduate school.”
