The President’s Reception honoring the graduates will be held in The Grove immediately following the commencement ceremony. All graduates, their families and guests, faculty and staff are invited to attend.

The College Mace The mace symbolizes the Office of the President and is carried by a faculty member who leads the academic procession for the two major academic ceremonies on campus: Opening Convocation and Commencement. Ramapo College’s mace is hexagonally shaped, hand-crafted from solid natural cherry and custom turned by hand. A new mace, featuring Ramapo College’s seal in silver, was created in 2002. The Commencement Mace Bearer at Ramapo College is the winner of The Fred and Florence Thomases Award for Faculty Research and Development.

The Fred and Florence Thomases Award The Fred and Florence Thomases Award was established in 1975 as an endowment from founding trustee Florence Thomases and her husband. The award is given annually to honor one or two faculty members who demonstrate excellence in teaching, excellence in scholarship, outstanding contribution to College and community, and outstanding fulfillment of professional responsibility. Deans of academic units in consultation with faculty and students make nominations for the award to the Provost, who reviews the nominations and forwards three names to the President for the final selection. The 2010 Awardee is: Bonnie L. Blake, Professor of Design and Interactive Media School of Contemporary Arts

Academic Regalia The wearing of caps, gowns, and hoods at college and university functions dates back to the earliest days of the oldest universities, when they were first worn by monks and students to keep warm in the 12th century castles and halls of learning.Their color and style signify the following: Gowns: The bachelor’s gown has pointed sleeves. The master’s gown has oblong sleeves, open at the wrist. The doctor’s gown has bell-shaped sleeves. Hoods: The hoods are lined in silk in the color or colors of the institution granting the degree. If the institution has more than one color, the second color is shown though the use of chevrons. The binding or edge of the hood is usually made of velvet in a color designating the field in which the degree was granted.

Some hoods in prominence worn by faculty are: Columbia University (light blue and white); Harvard University (crimson); Rutgers University (scarlet); NewYork University (purple);Yale University (blue); and Cornell University (scarlet). Caps: The traditional mortarboard is made from the same material as the gown. Doctor’s caps may be made of velvet and may have tassels of gold or in the color of the wearer’s degree. Graduates of some institutions wear soft caps. Tassels: At Ramapo College, tassel colors for graduates indicate their discipline.Tassels for faculty indicate highest degree earned and signify the following: black or silver (bachelor’s or master’s degree); and gold (doctorate).

2010 Recipient of the President’s Award of Merit

Dr. Anthony J. DeCarlo ‘77 Dr. Anthony J. DeCarlo is the co-founder and co-owner of Red BankVeterinary Hospital, one of the country’s premier privately-owned veterinary hospitals, located in Tinton Falls, New Jersey. The hospital was founded, along with Dr. Thomas Trotter, in 1986, on three principles that remain the guiding philosophy today: provide the best veterinary medicine and customer service, do what is in the best interest of the patient and client, and give employees the tools they need to excel in their work. His management practices and guiding philosophy enabled him to turn a two doctor practice into a unique and highly successful veterinary healthcare network of hospitals. Early in his career, Dr. DeCarlo was a pioneer in performing MRI’s in small animals. He believed in making 24-hour emergency care available to pet owners and later became instrumental in expanding the availability of specialty services. Today, he has assembled one of the most comprehensive groups of veterinary specialists available to pet owners in a single location. His vision, philosophy, and commitment to providing pet owners with medical options led to a further expansion of referral services to include 24-hour emergency and specialty care hospitals in Cherry Hill, Hillsborough and Linwood and a physical rehabilitation and medical boarding facility in Red Bank. The hospital is a proud supporter of many local charities which aim to improve the lives of both animals and children. Personally, Dr. DeCarlo is active in the veterinary community and serves as president of the New JerseyVeterinary Medical Association and as a trustee for The Seeing Eye. He is a member of the Ronald McDonald Cancer Camp executive board and is also a proud volunteer and supporter of the Ronald McDonald Cancer Camp for Children and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Monmouth County. Dr. DeCarlo graduated from Ramapo College of New Jersey in 1977 where he majored in Biology. He earned a Doctorate inVeterinary Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania in 1982.

Commencement Speaker

Senator Robert Menendez Bob Menendez’s story is a quintessential American story. He grew up the son of immigrants in a tenement building in Union City and has risen to become one of 100 United States Senators and a member of the Senate leadership. He has earned the reputation of a fighter for New Jersey families who puts their economic security and hometown security ahead of powerful special interests. A product of New Jersey's public schools and a graduate of the state's universities, Bob entered public service because of his core belief that a quality education and the opportunity to succeed should be a right, not just a privilege for the wealthy. He also learned early on the importance of standing up for what's right, no matter how powerful the opposition. As a 19-year-old college student, Bob witnessed shortcomings in the public education system and launched a successful petition drive to reform his local school board. He stood up to corruption in Union City as a witness against the political machine in a Federal trial. He has served as a school board member, a mayor and a state legislator. Since 1993, he has been standing up for New Jersey families inWashington, where he rose to become the third-highest ranking Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives and has taken on a prominent leadership role in the U.S. Senate. In Congress, Bob is working to make a real difference in the lives of New Jerseyans and continues to be a champion on education issues. This year alone, he has helped to enact a landmark overhaul of the student loan system that ends subsidies to big banks; has provided a major increase in Pell Grants; and co-sponsored legislation to help retain classroom teachers in cash-strapped states. He is also working to achieve economic security for families by creating jobs, promoting clean energy development, providing tax relief, making health insurance more affordable and implementing accountability onWall Street. Bob was sworn in to the Senate on January 18, 2006, having been appointed by New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine to fill the remainder of his term. Later that year, the people of New Jersey elected Bob to serve a full six-year term as United States Senator. He currently serves on the Senate Committees on Finance; Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs; Energy and Natural Resources; and Foreign Relations. Bob is also the Chairman of the Banking Subcommittee on Housing,Transportation and Community Development; and the Foreign Relations Subcommittee on International Development and Foreign Assistance, Economic Affairs, and International Environmental Protection. In November 2008, Bob was chosen to head the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, a top position of national leadership. His first book, Growing American Roots, was released in October 2009. It examines the deep influence of the Latino population on American society and, from his unique perspective as the only Latino member of the Senate, lays out his vision for how the Latino community can help America prosper. Bob has two children, Alicia and Robert Jr., who is a student at Rutgers Law School.

About Ramapo College Ranked by U.S. News &World Report as fifth in the north in the Top Public Universities-Master’s category, Ramapo College of New Jersey is sometimes mistaken for a private college. This is, in part, due to its unique interdisciplinary academic structure, its size of approximately 5,660 students and its pastoral setting in the foothills of the Ramapo Mountains on the New Jersey/NewYork border. Established in 1969, Ramapo College offers bachelor’s degrees in the arts, business, humanities, social sciences and the sciences, as well as in professional studies, which include nursing and social work. In addition, Ramapo College offers courses leading to teacher certification at the elementary and secondary levels. The College also offers four graduate programs as well as articulated programs with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, NewYork Chiropractic College, NewYork University College of Dentistry, SUNY State College of Optometry and NewYork College of Podiatric Medicine. Undergraduate students choose to concentrate their studies in one of five schools with more than 700 course offerings and 40 academic programs. Ramapo College boasts an average student/faculty ratio of 18:1 and average class size of 23, affording students the opportunity to develop close ties to the College’s exceptional faculty. The College’s mission is focused on the four “pillars” of a Ramapo education: international, intercultural, interdisciplinary and experiential, all of which are incorporated throughout the curriculum and extracurriculum. The international mission is further accomplished through a wide range of study abroad and student exchange links with institutions all over the world through the New Jersey State Consortium for International Studies (NJSCIS). Additional experiential programs include internships, co-op and service learning. A campus-wide building program during recent years has resulted in the completion of the Anisfield School of Business academic facility, a central feature of the main entrance to the campus; the Bill Bradley Sports and Recreation Center, with its 2,200-seat arena, fitness center, climbing wall, track and dance/aerobics studio; the Overlook and Laurel residence halls and the Village apartment complex. The Angelica and Russ Berrie Center for Performing andVisual Arts, completed in 1999, houses performance theaters, art galleries and specialized spaces devoted to fine arts, computer art, photography, theater, dance and music. The Sharp Sustainability Education Center and the Salameno Spiritual Center were completed in 2009. Ramapo College of New Jersey is listed in the February 2010 issue of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine as among the “100 BestValues in Public Colleges” for 2009. This is the fifth consecutive year Ramapo has been included in the “100 Best Values in Public Colleges.” The college was ranked #49 in the country, and as one of three colleges in New Jersey in the Top 100. Ramapo College also is one of 212 institutions recommended by The Princeton Review in the “Best in the Northeast” section in the 2009 edition of The Best Northeastern Colleges. Dr. Peter Philip Mercer became the College’s fourth president on July 1, 2005.The College is governed by a Board of Trustees who are appointed by the Governor of the State. The chairman of the board is A. J. Sabath ‘93.
