from the office of the president PETER P. MERCER, Ph.D. As a Canadian accustomed to celebrating Thanksgiving on the second Monday in October, I have always felt out of rhythm with the American Thanksgiving holiday. It takes too long to get here, and then there is barely time to eat the leftovers before the decorations go up heralding the next round of turkey dinners.

My discomfiture during the Thanksgiving holiday of 2012, however, went far beyond timing quibbles. Hurricane Sandy left such enormous devastation in its wake that it was difficult to imagine how those who had lost their homes and possessions could muster the spirit to be thankful. But muster it they did, and countless stories emerged of total strangers giving aid to those who needed it. Prominent among those were members of our own student body, some of whose efforts were specifically mentioned by Governor Christie in one of his press conferences. On the college campus, we had occasion to feel almost apologetic that, by comparison, we had so much to be thankful for. No real damage was done to persons or property, and we lost power for only two hours. We opened the auxiliary gym and showers to the people of Mahwah and offered available residence space to those of our faculty, staff and students whose circumstances were most difficult. As we begin 2013, I am grateful for all that we have endured and accomplished together. We received a record number of applications, our comprehensive fundraising campaign is more than 10% over its $40 million goal with six months to go and we will be carrying out about $100 million of construction on campus over the next few years to complete the substantial renovation of our academic facilities. Ramapo College is on the move, pushing boundaries and we are determined to keep improving the quality of education we provide our students.

Ramapo College is proud to have the continuing and ardent support of Lawrence C. and Theresa Salameno. Their generosity ensures an outstanding liberal arts education for Ramapo students. Here, President Peter P. Mercer (left) acknowledges their most recent gift at a celebration of the College’s $40 million capital campaign.

Thank you for your support. Yours sincerely, Peter P. Mercer President

MESSAGES FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES AND THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS

A.J. SABATH ’93 CHAIR, RAMAPO COLLEGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

ROBERT TILLSLEY CHAIR, RAMAPO COLLEGE FOUNDATION BOARD OF GOVERNORS

As my term draws to a close, I find myself looking back on yet another extraordinary year of achievement for Ramapo College of New Jersey. Our commitment to rigorous academics, faculty mentorship, hands-on learning and preparing students for a lifetime of achievement drew the largest and most diverse student body in the College’s history.

The Ramapo College Foundation has much to be proud of, having exceeded financial goals in key areas. The Capital Campaign goal, set at $40 million, resulted in a wonderful accomplishment of $42,411,682. A Grants and Government goal of $15.5 million was surpassed by $2,556,259. A benchmark of $10 million was set for Endowments and Restricted funds and that resulted in $687,354 more than that amount.

With a number of options available to them, students from throughout the state continue to recognize the value of a Ramapo education. You do not have to look any further than the cover of Ramapo Magazine for proof. Nora Dougherty, who graduated in May, made history and became the first student in the College’s 43-year history to win a Fulbright Scholarship. She told Ramapo Magazine that she initially thought she had to go to a big school to go far. She is now in northern Spain studying and teaching.

There was a 12% increase over the past three years thanks to the generous support from Business Partners. An integral part of the College’s experiential learning component, Business Partners mentor our students in internships and cooperative education experiences. Business Partners also hosted luncheons featuring New Jersey State Lieutenant Gov. Kim Guadagno, U.S. Congressman Scott Garrett and benefactor Lawrence C. Salameno. Total endowments grew by 28%, and the dollar amount of scholarships awarded increased by 26%. The Foundation’s Distinguished Citizens Dinner achieved 11% over goal; the Performing Arts Series was over goal by 35%. The Annual Golf Outing and Ramapo Rumble Motorcycle Rally were also great successes. These events strengthen our ties with the community and support our mission’s goals. We should not, however, take these results for granted. The outstanding fiscal year was characterized by hard work, new initiatives and the generous support of all of you.

In July, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education accepted a monitoring report outlining the steps we have taken to further enhance assessment of general education and student learning, as well as other recommendations from the accrediting body. The achievement is a testament to faculty and staff willingness to embrace new routes to excellence on behalf of our students.

This fall, the College launched a new accelerated MBA program, a hybrid offering for young professionals who want to learn about leadership and will spend weeks in China as part of a unique international immersion component. Our Student Engagement initiative has been a wonderful success. The well-considered and executed plan has enriched the lives of our students by encouraging them to learn outside the classroom, fostering College pride, promoting socialization, and helping them become leaders on and off campus. My colleagues on the Board of Trustees look forward to reviewing the new strategic plan, which will help direct the College in coming years and ensure that we continue to use our resources in a thoughtful and efficient manner. None of these accomplishments would have been possible without the leadership of President Peter P. Mercer. During my four years as chairman of the Board of Trustees, one of my greatest pleasures has been the opportunity to work with my board colleagues and Dr. Mercer for the benefit of generations of Ramapo College graduates. I look forward to this new year and the exciting new achievements it will undoubtedly bring.

2

Benefactors continue to commit to the future of Ramapo College through 15 new planned gifts. Membership in the Alumni Association continues to grow. Seven successful regional campaign events were hosted, including one in Los Angeles, and the first Alumni-Parent Convocation drew more than 75 attendees. As I end my term as board chairman, I do so with the knowledge that the Foundation is fiscally sound. I remain inspired by the generosity demonstrated by individual donors, alumni, members of the Board of Governors, the Trustees, the Friends of Ramapo, the President’s Parent Council and corporate members of the Business Partners program. All of this support is paramount to providing the excellent liberal arts education offered at Ramapo College.

On November 3, Governor Christie toured Little Ferry and Moonachie, NJ, and the damage done by Hurricane Sandy. During a briefing, he thanked business owners who had donated funds and services for the recovery effort and also thanked a group of Ramapo College students who volunteered in Little Ferry, helping elderly residents clear damaged belongings from their flood-damaged homes. “These are extraordinary examples of the great people we produce in this state,” Christie said.

ora Dougherty almost didn’t enroll at Ramapo College. As a senior at Middletown North High School in central New Jersey, she already knew she wanted to pursue a career in international affairs. In the fall of her senior year, she attended Immediate Decision Day at Ramapo and was accepted and offered a full Presidential Scholarship. But she’d also been accepted to George Washington University in Washington, D.C., whose international studies program is considered among the elite programs in America. She had some thinking to do. “I was having the debate in my head,” she says, recalling that anxious time. “I thought I had to go to the big school to get far.”

Director of International Education Ben Levy and Nora Dougherty

As it turns out, Dougherty’s own record of accomplishment over her ensuing four years at Ramapo proved how wrong she was. Dougherty spent a semester studying in Spain, a country she swiftly fell in love with and longed to return to. Back on campus, she worked in the Civic Engagement Center, advised other students about studying abroad, interned for a state senator and, as a student in the College Honors Program, racked up a 3.985 grade point average. She was admitted to three honors societies, received the International Studies Major Award at the 2012 Honors Convocation and earned enough credits to pile on a trio of minors: political science, Spanish language studies and human rights and genocide studies. And then, last spring, she made a little history, becoming the first student in the 43-year life of Ramapo College to earn a Fulbright Scholarship. In the fall, Dougherty began a year of teaching and study—expenses paid—in northern Spain. “I decided to go to Ramapo,” Dougherty says of the biggest decision of her young life, “and I’ve loved it here.” The feeling, no doubt, has been mutual. Dougherty bonded with professors such as Cliff Peterson, Rebecca Root and Behzad Yaghmaian. She worked closely with Ben Levy, the Director of International Education, and with Associate Professor of Law and Society Aaron Lorenz, who helped guide her through the Fulbright application process. Peterson met Dougherty during orientation for incoming freshmen. Dougherty remembers their meeting as something of an affirmation of her decision to attend

Ramapo and major in international studies. She was thinking maybe she’d focus on international business. That sounded more practical, more career-oriented. But Peterson’s openness warmed her to her new school, and his enthusiasm for international studies won her over. “After I met him, I was done,” Dougherty says. “I wanted to take international studies.” Peterson, too, remembers that first meeting. “I was very impressed with her and her maturity, her intelligence and her sense of what she wanted to do with her studies,” he says. “I remember coming back from that orientation meeting and saying to a couple colleagues, ’Wow I just met a great student coming in and she’s majoring in international studies, and I’m excited about her.’ Fast forward to see what she’s accomplished, I would say she’s really exceeded even my lofty expectations.” Over the next four years, Peterson watched admiringly as Dougherty excelled not only in the classroom but in her extracurricular work. She got involved in Save Darfur, a student club, and in a campus group affiliated with Invisible Children, the San Diego charity that produced the controversial documentary on Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony. Peterson saw her cultivate what he calls “an intellectual maturity.” “Her commitment to those kinds of activities, where she played a leadership role and took a lot of initiative, really showed her passion beyond being a very good student,” Peterson says. “She is someone motivated to make real changes in the world. On many, many levels she’s been an incredible student.

The Fulbright is sort of the culmination of what she’s been doing at Ramapo.” Perhaps it falls to Lorenz, who, in his role as Ramapo’s Director of Scholarships and Fellowships, helped guide Dougherty through an application process she describes as “daunting,” to put into context what her Fulbright means for her alma mater. “For us at Ramapo College—a small college without a national reputation—to have this Fulbright is undoubtedly the biggest thing to happen to us in terms of fellowships or scholarships,” Lorenz says. “It establishes a reputation. We’re competing against Harvard and Princeton and Stanford and Amherst and Williams—large and small schools with reputations around the world that have hundreds of applicants applying to Fulbright. At Ramapo, we had 10 this year. I don’t think we can say enough that what Nora has done is just remarkable.”

BORN TO BE A CITIZEN OF THE WORLD Dougherty has nurtured a fascination with travel from an early age, a wanderlust she attributes to her father, who as a young man backpacked through Europe and northern Africa. “Growing up, I’d always hear all the stories,” she says. “All of his brothers, too. They all traveled throughout Europe. And then I got into politics. And I just liked international politics. That’s why I didn’t do political science. I knew I wanted to take classes that were more internationally focused.” Entering Ramapo, Dougherty knew she wanted to take a semester to study in a Spanish-speaking country. She’d taken Spanish language courses since middle school, and she was inspired by her high school Spanish teacher, Beatriz Pelaez-Martinez, to pursue Spanish in college. Palaez-Martinez was from Cuba, but her husband’s family hailed from Seville, and she routinely peppered her lessons with asides about Seville. (As Dougherty says, “Everything was just Seville, Seville, Seville!”)

“So I kind of always had in my mind that I wanted to go to Spain,” Dougherty says. “And I wanted to go to Europe, too, as opposed to South America or anywhere else in Latin America. I knew I wanted to travel throughout Europe. So, Spain was the obvious choice.” And, so, in the spring of 2010, Dougherty traveled to Spain. She was a sophomore, a year younger than the typical student who goes abroad. “I was impatient,” she says. She stayed with a host family and took courses in Spanish language, culture and politics at the Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo Sevilla. The sun-drenched capital of the Andalusia region, Seville is the home of flamenco and bullfighting. It’s also known for its tapas bars and nightlife. Dougherty was smitten. What was the appeal? For a moment, the question makes her pause. But only for a moment. “I don’t know,” she says. “The people and the atmosphere. Everyone is just so friendly, and everyone is always out socializing. All the Spaniards would be out every Sunday with their families, playing and just getting tapas. It was a very social environment. My dad always jokes that this is why Spain is in the situation they’re in. It’s not that they don’t care about work, but work isn’t their lives. Work is just a means to get food. You know what I mean? I love their lifestyle, I guess.” On weekends, Dougherty and friends would gallivant across Europe. She traveled to Portugal, France, Ireland, the Netherlands and Germany, and at the end of her semester, she stopped in England for two weeks to visit her uncle. When she returned to Ramapo, Dougherty stayed involved in study abroad efforts. As a global ambassador for the Roukema Center

for International Education, she traveled to Washington D.C., to lobby for more funding for American study abroad programs and more visas for foreign students and faculty wishing to come to the United States. As a Study in Spain Student Ambassador (a program coordinated by the Spanish Trade Commission), Dougherty encouraged students mulling over a semester of study abroad to consider Spain. The latter post earned Dougherty and nine other student ambassadors from across the country—deemed to be the top 10 student ambassadors nationwide—an invitation to dinner with the Spanish ambassador to the United States, Jorge Dezcallar de Mazarredo. The dinner was held at the Spanish embassy in Washington, D.C. In the middle of December. In the middle of finals week. Dougherty had a final the next day, in fact, and she considered sending the ambassador her regrets. Thankfully, reason prevailed. “How do you say no to that?” she says. She wore a pencil skirt and a flowered blouse, pearls and high heels, and when she arrived at the embassy on Pennsylvania Avenue, she learned that she’d be sitting right next to the ambassador. “I thought I was going to die,” Dougherty says. “I saw my place card and I was like, ‘Oh, my God.’”

Rounded out by a handful of embassy staff, the dinner party numbered no more than 15. Guests were served cream of watercress soup with Manchego cheese crackers, pastry filled with duck, raisins and olives cradled on bean sprouts in a Spanish sauce and dark chocolate mousse with peppermintcrunch, white-chocolate cookies. Dougherty was beside herself. “It was so fancy,” she says, a dreaminess in her voice. So what does one talk about when one dines with the Spanish ambassador? Dezcallar asked Dougherty about her study abroad experience in his country. She talked about the research she had done under the tutelage of Professor Behzad Yaghmaian for her honors program thesis, titled “European Migration Policy: Impact of Euro Zone Financial Crisis and North African Revolutions.” “I thought he was going to be very formal,” Dougherty says. “But he was funny. Half the time, he was going on about how ridiculous Spanish visa laws are. I don’t know. I guess he thought, ’These are 10 American students. Who are they going to tell?’ He doesn’t have to be so prim and proper with us. He was talking about politics, and I was like, ’Can you be saying all of this?’ But I guess he figured he wasn’t around people who would take his quotes down.”

EDUCATION IN THE TRUEST SENSE OF THE WORD Come spring semester, Dougherty waited anxiously for word of the fate of her Fulbright application (though she hardly slowed down, working the semester as an intern for New Jersey State Sen. Robert M. Gordon). With help from Lorenz, and after securing letters of recommendation from Peterson, Yaghmaian and Levy, she had filed the application in October. Lorenz says Fulbright applicants need to describe their research proposal and draw a connection between the country in which they want to study and their personal and academic history with that country. “You have to be able to convey that you have a research proposal that will make Fulbright look good and make the College look good. Nora did a great job of that,” Lorenz says. “Nora has studied Spain, visited Spain and worked among Spanish-language speakers a number of times. That distinguished her as a Spanish-language student and a Spanish-language Fulbright scholar.”

The application also included a personal statement. In hers, Dougherty recalled her decision to pursue international studies, despite the less-than-obvious career path it might lead to. She recalled her father, Eugene, and his lifelong pursuit of learning, both as a product of a liberal arts education—he was a history major at Brooklyn College—and as a curious citizen of the world. “To study international studies is to study language, politics, economics, anthropology and literature; in essence, it is an education in the truest sense of the word,” Dougherty wrote. “I have spent four years fully engrossed and engaged in my education, developing global awareness, critical reading and writing skills and cross-cultural communication skills that could never have been learned in financial accounting. I have studied topics ranging from economic development strategies in Colombia to ethnographies of the native tribes of Papua New Guinea. My degree has made me a well rounded person, and to me, that is the ultimate form of success.” On January 19, 2012, Dougherty learned that she had made it past the initial round of screening for Fulbright applicants. That meant more waiting. Finally, on Monday, April 16, she received an email from Theresa Granza, Director of U.S. Student Programs at the Institute of International Education in New York City. “Congratulations!” it began. Dougherty was home at the time, nursing an eye infection. She went in search of her mother, Barbara—“Mom! Mom! Mom!”—and found her in the kitchen. She kept it simple. “I got it,” she said. Barbara Dougherty, according to her daughter’s account, “freaked out.” She screamed for her husband, who was in the backyard, to come inside. He did. “What do I have to kill?” he said as soon as he walked in, figuring that only a trespassing insect could have inspired such a commotion. “They were super excited,” Dougherty says. So was Lorenz. Three years ago, Provost Beth Barnett asked him to create the Office of Fellowships and Scholarships. Each year, he helps dozens of students navigate what is often an exhausting application process, from writing a personal statement to preparing for an in-person interview. Lorenz, who has two kids of his own, ages three and five, says seeing Dougherty win a Fulbright made him feel like the proud parent of a 22-year-old. “She has the maturity you often don’t see in a graduating senior,” he says. “She’s known across campus in virtually every sector. She has really involved herself in college in a way—and I’ve been doing this for 15 years—that I can’t really recall of a student. It doesn’t seem like she’s overworked. At the same time, she’s constantly busy. She seems to be able to handle everything and still smile about it and get her work done. I don’t know how she’s been able to do it all, but she does.” Dougherty is spending the year living and teaching at a high school in the town of San Vicente de la Barquera, a port city in northernmost Spain. After that? She’d like to go to graduate school, preferably in Europe—ideally at the London School of Economics. But she doesn’t spend much time thinking about what might have happened if she’d gone to another college for her undergraduate degree. Ramapo, it turns out, was just the right fit.

PUSHING BOUNDARIES

>BY CHRISTOPHER HANN

RAMAPO COLLEGE’S NURSING PROGRAM REACHES NEW HEIGHTS WITH GRADUATES PUSHING BOUNDARIES The first nursing class that any student in Ramapo College’s nursing program takes is called Evidence-Based Practice and Nursing Research. If you think that sounds a little ambitious for an introductory curriculum, Kathy Burke might tell you that’s precisely the point. “Everyone assumes a nurse is a nurse, not realizing that they’re continually engaged in lifelong learning, continually engaged in lifelong clinical inquiry,” says Burke, the Assistant Dean of Nursing. “We begin teaching them the process of clinical inquiry and how never to be satisfied with the status quo.” Burke has taught at Ramapo since 1996, long enough to see enrollment in the nursing program grow from 45 to nearly 400. She’s helped coordinate partnerships with New Jersey hospitals, which provide Ramapo nursing students with critical hands-on experience, and has seen the nursing program expand to include a master’s program and, soon, a new home, the Adler Center for Nursing Excellence, scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2014, designed specifically for future nursing students. For Burke, a special point of pride has been Ramapo’s longstanding emphasis on nurse-driven, clinical-based research associated with The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, NJ. “I think the difference with Ramapo is that the faculty are always looking for innovative ways to include students in evidence and research at institutions that we affiliate with. And we’re aggressive about it, we really are. So it rubs off on students.” Ramapo nursing students take advantage of a myriad of opportunities to gain experience in the field. In 2008,

Burke and nursing professor Elaine Patterson began taking nursing and other students on an annual study abroad trip to Sierra Leone, a venture supported by Sa Leone Health Pride, headed by clinical professor (and two-time Ramapo nursing graduate) Florence Dorwie, who grew up in the war-torn African country. Back on campus, nursing students work in a simulation lab where computerized dummy patients can be programmed to simulate just about any medical condition. “Whatever a patient can do,” Burke says, “this dummy can do.” In addition to Ramapo’s partnership with Valley Hospital, the College has forged strong affiliations with Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, NJ, and St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson, NJ. The Valley Hospital’s credentialed nurses support the clinical learning of Ramapo students and serve as instructors and mentors for evidence-based projects. Additionally, Valley nurses use the Ramapo simulation lab for most of their annual competency evaluations. Ramapo professors serve on the Valley Nurse Research Council Steering Committee, which must approve research projects proposed by Valley nurses, including a regular number of Ramapo graduates. Ramapo professors also sit on research committees at Hackensack University Medical Center, St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center, and Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, NY. “The difference here is that we expect them to begin doing these projects, and we mentor them during their time here with the nurses at the hospital,” Burke says. “They clearly know that this continuing clinical inquiry is their professional responsibility.”

Nurse Margaret Valenti wanted to alleviate the pain anxiety experienced by many of her patients at Valley Hospital. On the whiteboard in each patient’s room she started writing the time they would receive their next dose of medication, and she noticed that simple act seemed to bring them some measure of comfort. In 2011, at Valenti’s request, hospital officials gave her the go-ahead to test her hunch in a formal survey. Three months later, the results were dramatic enough—“statistically significant” is the term researchers use— Valley Nurses Margaret Valenti ’12, Dona Meringer ’12 and Margaret Bischoff ’11 that Valley amended its pain policy to include Valenti’s intervention. “When you get good outcomes from your patients,” Valenti says, “you continue to do it.” Valenti graduated from Ramapo with a master’s degree in nursing education in 2012—taking many classes online—28 years after earning a bachelor’s degree in business from Iona College. At 42, having raised four kids, Valenti decided to pursue what she calls “my dream of becoming a nurse.” Today she’s also an adjunct nursing professor at Ramapo. “I believe it’s a calling,” she says. “I feel very blessed to be able to work in a profession I love.”

PUSHING BOUNDARIES

>BY CHRISTOPHER HANN

DONA MERINGER ’12 When Margaret Valenti set out on her pain-anxiety research project, she enlisted the aid of Ramapo classmate Dona Meringer. For Meringer, as for Valenti, nursing was a second career. She had earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science from William Paterson University and worked for a decade as a computer programmer for IBM. Then, as the mother of three kids, she went back to school, earning a bachelor’s degree in nursing from William Paterson and a master’s in nursing education from Ramapo. During her research with Valenti, Meringer was responsible for eliciting the responses of new mothers on the postpartum unit. “Dr. Burke mentored us through the entire process,” Meringer says, “and as a result of our research, it is a policy within our organization that nurses must write the time of the next available pain medication on the patient’s whiteboard. Having the impact to change policy is significant.” Today, Meringer’s daughter, Patti, also works as a nurse at Valley Hospital. “I think watching me go through it, it definitely influenced her,” Meringer says. “That’s the thing with nursing, you have the opportunity to impact so many people.”

Petra Tepper ’04

PETRA TEPPER ’04 The cancer that invaded Petra Tepper’s body in 1986 moved doctors to amputate her right leg above the knee. A quarter-century later, Tepper has turned the experience into a nursing specialty.

Petra Tepper ’04 and Gina Dovi ’07

GINA DOVI ’07 As a pediatric nurse at Hackensack University Medical Center, Gina Dovi treats some of the hospital’s most vulnerable patients: children with cancer, blood disorders and bone marrow transplants. Often she sees them afflicted with mucositis, inflammation and ulcerations in the mouth that can lead to pain, bleeding, infection and poor nutrition. Dovi had read studies of adult mucositis patients who were treated with ice chips, which cooled their mouths during the infusion of chemotherapy and decreased the severity of mucositis. She wondered whether the treatment, known as cryotherapy, would help younger patients. She embarked on a one-year study, to be completed in March, to determine whether ice chips could help children who would be receiving chemotherapy prior to a stem cell transplant. Dovi, who earned her degree in nursing from Ramapo in 2007, is now enrolled in Ramapo’s master’s program in nursing education. “I really like the idea of helping people,” she says. “If you can make a kid smile once a day and make their day just a little better, that makes me happy.”

8

At Hackensack University Medical Center, where she’s worked as an orthopedic nurse since 2000, Tepper serves as a “peer visitor,” part of a program run by the Amputee Coalition. At the request of doctors and fellow nurses, Tepper visits new amputees, assuring them that they can still live a normal, even active, life. “There’s still hope,” Tepper says. “It’s not the worst thing in the world.” Tepper earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Ramapo in 2004. Now, she’s trying to create a more formal organization of peer visitors. She says she’s consulted patients at home, over the phone, even by email. “Faceto-face is the best,” says Tepper, who wears a prosthetic, “because you can show off your hardware.”

MARGARET BISCHOFF ’12 As a nurse in the neonatal unit at Valley Hospital, Margaret Bischoff works with premature babies and their anxious moms. Two years ago she began a research project to determine whether a light-touch therapy known as the M technique, typically used on adult patients in an intensive-care unit, could be applied to newborns. Bischoff conducted a 13-month study involving 100 babies. Fifty received the light-touch therapy. Fifty did not. Bischoff hoped the treatment would help reduce stress in the newborns—some were born after just 24 weeks of gestation—and thus encourage their healing and maturation. While the babies received the light-touch therapy, Bischoff monitored their heart rates and oxygen saturation levels (most neonates breathe with the aid of a ventilator). “Babies can’t raise their hand and tell me that they’re stressed,” Bischoff says. “But I can look at their heart rate and breathing rate to tell if they’re stressed.” While the study did not provide conclusive results, Bischoff says, the findings did reveal some noteworthy differences—for example, in the effects of the treatment on boys versus girls. In October she traveled to Palm Springs, CA, to present her findings to the National Association of Neonatal Nurses.

recently retired from private practice as a physiatrist with Easton Area Rehab Physicians, which she co-owned. She received the President’s Award of Merit in 2007 for her distinguished accomplishments. She and her husband, Adalgery, endowed the Beck Scholarship to benefit students pursuing advanced degrees in medicine or chemistry. Dr. Beck met her husband at the College where he was a laboratory technician from 1973 to 1976. Q: You hold a nursing degree and enrolled in Ramapo College to major in chemistry. You went on to complete a medical degree at New York Medical College. How did your time at Ramapo prepare you for medical school? A: The coursework, as well as the courses I took to become a nurse, made me well grounded for the subject matter that I dealt with in medical school. Q: Why physiatristy? What drew you to physical medicine and rehabilitation? A: I began in internal medicine and completed a one-year stint at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Paterson. I didn’t feel internal medicine allowed enough time to work with patients. Physiatristy is a broad field. It is a specialty with a strong link to internal medicine. I worked in a free-standing rehabilitation facility and used internal medicine skills to diagnose patients.

is the founding Principal of JR Market Strategies, LLC, a health care consulting practice. He received the President’s Award of Merit in 1996 for his distinguished accomplishments and the Distinguished Citizens Award in 2006 for his commitment to the community. He and his wife endowed the Jeffrey and Andrea Warren Scholarship, now the Warren Family Scholarship, in 2001. He also serves as chairman of the Morris County Regional Alumni Association. Q: Why did an urban studies major pursue a career in health care? A: When I graduated, urban affairs was out of favor in Washington, D.C. and there were few entry-level positions available. At that time, a friend had recently graduated from the health care program at New York University’s Graduate School of Public Administration and suggested that I look into it. I received my MPA in Health Policy, Planning and Administration, and then followed health care related opportunities in both the public and private sectors. Later in my career, as the executive vice president, corporate development for Cathedral HealthCare System in Newark, I was able to combine my interest in urban affairs and health. Q: What services does JR Market Strategies offer? A: I advise early stage health care focused start-up companies on how to position their products and services in the marketplace, and help them create business building opportunities with customers and strategic partners. Often, the founders of these firms are innovators in the health services/technology space. I also provide strategic marketing counsel to pharmaceutical and other health care related companies through a partnership with another firm. Q: Can you name some of your clients? A: Remedia is a health care technology firm that has developed leading edge web-based algorithms for managing problems associated with over/under and inappropriate use of medications. They work with health plans and self-insured employers to improve and lower costs. Stayhealthy, Inc. based in California sells and leases web-enabled kiosks and devices that are FDA approved and capable of collecting health measurement data on body composition, weight, blood pressure, hearing and vision. Used across the U.S., these kiosks help promote health and wellness for businesses and communities. Transition Patient Services (TPS) provides hospitals and health plans with a technology solution that offers transition-in-care next day medication delivery combined with interactive voice response capability for patients leaving the hospital. This approach is designed to reduce hospital readmissions. Another client is Gardant Global, which helps companies secure federal procurement and other grant funding to support their business objectives.

A: Well, the College helped me to reach my potential! I was the first Ramapo College graduate to attend medical school. Professor Theodore Sall approached me and asked if I had thought about medical school. At that time they were looking for possible candidates for medical school and he encouraged me to apply. Q: What are some of your favorite memories of Ramapo College? A: I loved the informality at that time. There were lunches with the professors and the interaction between the students and professors was wonderful. The professors were approachable and students never felt as if they were intruding. They encouraged students to ask for help. I particularly remember professors Robert Shine and Len Ciaccio. Ted Michelfeld made advanced inorganic chemistry interesting. Professors Langer and Marsten were also helpful. Q: In addition to endowing a scholarship, you continue to financially support Ramapo College. What prompts your gifts? A: What we do and how we do it is an offshoot of our personalities. It is important to give back. Adalgery and I are fortunate to be able to do so. Also, I owe a debt of gratitude to the College for having gone to medical school. Q: During your time at Ramapo, you were considered a non-traditional student. What are some of the advantages? A: You go in knowing you have to apply yourself. You work hard to keep up and have good time management skills. There were several students who were older than the average age. Some were returning soldiers from Vietnam. Q: You are an accomplished professional and have achieved your career goals. Is there anything else you would like to accomplish? A: I’ve had a fulfilling and broad career. Now, I focus on staying as healthy as I can. I exercise, bowl, knit, sew and quilt. With a quilting group I’ve made teddy bears for children in the hospital and knitted red, white and blue hats for servicemen. We have to be goal-oriented to keep mentally and physically stimulated.

Q: You are involved with one of six approved medical marijuana alternative care centers in New Jersey. Why is this of interest to you?

JEFFREY WARREN ’73

Jeffrey Warren ’73, a member of Ramapo College’s first graduating class,

Q: How did Ramapo College help you to push personal and professional boundaries?

A: I believe that medicinal marijuana can help many people who are living with debilitating pain and discomfort. It can promote a better quality of life for those suffering from the nine conditions covered under the program. My hope is that it will become a valuable addition to other pain management options. Q: What did you learn at Ramapo College that has helped you in your career? A: I learned the value of taking risks and exploring new opportunities when they are offered. My internship in urban affairs from the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton, which was made available to Ramapo students, is a good example. I also learned the value of building and sustaining personal and professional relationships and the benefit that can be gained by learning and growing from each experience. The rapport that I had with my professors, particularly D. Bennett Mazur and Henry Bischoff helped instill this mind set. Q: You are a person who gives of his time, money and expertise. Some of your board activities are related to your profession. You’re on the boards of the Health Enhancement Research Organization, the American Association of Preferred Provider Organization and a member of the leadership committee of the New Jersey Healthcare Quality Institute. Unrelated to your work, you also serve on the board of the Adler Aphasia Center. Why is this important to you? A: Throughout my career, there were many people who took the time to provide me with guidance and support. By sitting on boards, I’m able to share my knowledge and expertise while giving back to others. Serving on boards is also a way to stay current in one’s field, meet new colleagues and develop lasting business relationships. My business affiliations offer a forum for me to promote those things that are important to me such as improved access to care, wellness and cost-effective care at the local, regional and national levels. My involvement on the board of the Adler Aphasia Center allows me to promote awareness of aphasia and the wonderful services that the center provides to those in need.

A TIME OF CELEBRATION ON CAMPUS

F

Dean of TAS Edward Saiff, Assemblywoman Marlene Caride, Mahwah Mayor William Laforet, Elaine and Mike Adler, The Honorable Timothy J. Eustace ’78, Assemblyman, District 38 and President Peter P. Mercer at the Groundbreaking Ceremony

all was a celebratory season for Ramapo College. The dedication of the Sharp Sustainability Education Center on September 21, 2012 presented an opportunity to thank Sharp Electronics Corporation during their 100th anniversary year for more than 20 years of support for Ramapo College’s students and programs. Since 1989, the Mahwah-based corporation has supported a multitude of projects on campus totaling more than $1.63 million. Sharp funded projects include donations of electronic equipment, sponsorship of a theater for the drama program and concert series, a fitness center and now, a facility dedicated to education about sustainable living from individual actions to public projects.

Elaine and Mike Adler

The Sharp Center is a demonstration space for sustainability practices and includes classroom and laboratory space for forums and symposia. The Center is also the headquarters for the New Jersey Higher Education Partnership for Sustainability, an organization of every college and university in New Jersey that has led efforts to make campuses sustainable.

34

Sharp Electronics provided financial support for the construction of the distinctive building, and solar products for demonstrations and educational instruction inside the facility. Toshiyuki Osawa, Sharp’s Chairman of the Board and CEO, and Vice President David Alai, who is a member of the Ramapo College Foundation’s Board of Governors, and other senior management leaders from Sharp Electronics, attended the ceremony.

Peter McBride and Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Executive Director of the Foundation Cathleen Davey cut the ribbon at the SEC building ribbon-cutting ceremony in September

Following, on October 4, a ground breaking ceremony was held for the Adler Center for Nursing Excellence. In November 2010, the Adlers, supporters of the College for more than 25 years, made a $2 million gift to name the Center. It will be the new home of Ramapo College’s highly-acclaimed and expanding Nursing programs. Ramapo’s undergraduate Nursing program is recognized as an innovative and effective path into the nursing profession. A Master of Science in Nursing Education was added in 2002. More than 460 students are enrolled in the Nursing programs.

The Adler Center for Nursing Excellence will feature three simulation rooms where students will learn to address emergencies involving their computer-simulated patients using the most advanced electronic systems available. A fully equipped Nursing Skills Lab that simulates actual hospital patient experiences will aid in teaching students the basics of nursing, including patient assessment and procedures. The 36,000 square foot Adler Center also features an Anatomy and Physiology Lab, computer labs and general purpose classrooms.
