from the office of the president PETER P. MERCER, Ph.D.

I completed my formal education. I have tried to contribute in a meaningful way to society. I have enjoyed professional success. I have said farewell to loved ones. I have had the pleasure of raising two children. The milestones that have marked my life are perhaps not so different from those that resonate with most people.

As I consider these milestones, however, I am reminded of Rose F. Kennedy’s words, “Life isn’t a matter of milestones but of moments.” I was reappointed in 2011 by the Board of Trustees for a five-year term as president of Ramapo College of New Jersey. While my reappointment is indeed a milestone in my life, it is the moments that brought me to this point for which my family and I are most grateful. My wife, Jackie, and I have, over the years, enjoyed bearing witness to the many talents of the Ramapo College faculty and staff, to the initiative and promise of our impressive students, and to the ceaseless desire of the College’s friends and supporters to push Ramapo to reach new heights. Students, colleagues, friends, and donors have come to me and to the College in times of grief, of joy, and of bewilderment. They have arrived at Ramapo because they found something in our curriculum that motivated them, someone in our faculty that inspired them, or some special place on our campus to temporarily sate their wanderlust. These people arrive at Ramapo, often, at a pivotal point in their lives believing that the College can help them discern their next step. Whether it is a faculty member considering new research opportunities for his/her undergraduates, or a student questioning where to study abroad, or a donor inquiring how their legacy could benefit others, they arrive at Ramapo asking questions. Perhaps it is the College’s commitment to developing critical thinking skills, or perhaps it is our unabated desire to push boundaries, whatever they may be, but the people that arrive at Ramapo asking questions leave Ramapo having found some answers.

“Further Our Promise,” Ramapo’s $40-million capital campaign was launched last year. The College, at the time of the campaign announcement, had already raised $38.8 million of its goal. This financial support does not come to our College simply because we ask for it. Financial support comes to Ramapo because faculty such as Eric Karlin, professor of plant ecology, have benefitted from privately funded faculty/ student research grants and have had his work and that of his students recognized by such entities as National Geographic and the BBC. Financial support comes to the College because students such as Brendan Flanagan ’12 espouse Ramapo’s strengths when he discusses his achievements as a scholar, a Global Roadrunner, a peer facilitator, a paid intern, and the president of the Ramapo College Model UN. Financial support comes to the College because friends such as Millicent and the late Dick Anisfield, Mike and Elaine Adler, Lawrence and Theresa Salameno, and countless others feel compelled by the College’s mission to support its success, its innovation, and its future.

Ramapo has become a part of the lives of so many by helping them form the best questions, find the appropriate resources, develop the skills to succeed, and arrive at their own answers. As president, I am most fulfilled by having the distinct privilege to share these both intimate and public moments with students, colleagues, and friends—and for that, I thank you.

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

A.J. SABATH ’93 CHAIR, RAMAPO COLLEGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

I graduated from Ramapo in 1993. As a student, I was impressed by the faculty who taught and mentored me. I benefitted from their candor, expertise, and real-world experience in their respective disciplines. As an alumnus of Ramapo College, I am grateful for the time the faculty took with me over the years to connect me with employers and social organizations with whom I enjoyed mutually beneficial relationships that helped launch my career. Over the years, I have held a number of positions in the New Jersey Legislature including chief of staff to Senate President Richard J. Codey, and commissioner for the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development. Now, as Chair of the College’s Board of Trustees, I continue to be impressed and grateful for the College’s faculty. Their talents and connections continue to grow and, despite numerous challenges, their commitment to providing a superior undergraduate education has not waned. The faculty, however, do not bear the burdens of our challenging times alone. The College as a whole has had to confront a steady decline in state support and a creeping devaluation of higher education across the country. While a

student at Ramapo in the early ’90s, I organized demonstrations in Trenton with other student activists in opposition to the cuts being made then to higher education. Sadly, nearly 20 years later, Ramapo actually receives the same level of funding from the state that it received in 1994. In addition, between 1998 and 2009, the State of New Jersey negotiated approximately $226 million in salary obligations at the nine state colleges and universities but only provided funding for 22% of those obligations. According to “Squeeze Play 2010,” a new report from Public Agenda and the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education, “Six out of 10 Americans believe that colleges mainly care about their own bottom lines instead of making sure that students have a good educational experience.” This couldn’t be less true at Ramapo. The financial health of the College is very important to us, but not solely because of our bottom line. It is important because it allows the College’s leadership to recruit and retain highly qualified faculty, to provide superior academic and social spaces that foster innovation and growth, and to make a college education more affordable for promising students in need. We do all of

this to ensure that our students receive a stellar education while at Ramapo so that when they leave our campus, they have a distinct edge over their peers. They are poised to succeed in a highly competitive marketplace. “Squeeze Play 2010” also noted, “More than half of Americans now say college is essential for success in the work world,” and Department of Labor data support this. Since 1973, the average hourly earnings for workers with a high school diploma or less have declined in real terms. At the same time, college graduates’ wages have remained roughly constant in real terms. Data also suggest that there is evidence of the real economic value of cognitive skills such as reasoning, critical thinking, and writing—all essential elements of a liberal arts education at Ramapo College. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I commend to you this edition of Ramapo College Magazine—one that highlights our past achievements, celebrates our present challenges and strengths, and hopefully inspires you to remain part of our future.

MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDATION BOARD OF GOVERNORS

The ability to raise funds is not a knack. It is a skill, one predicated on having a passion for your cause—in this case, Ramapo College. Passion and a strong product. While some may believe that the education a student receives at Ramapo College speaks for itself, the Board of Governors is pleased to praise the institution at every turn. The fiscal year ending June 30, 2011, has been a spectacular one, marked by increased support in all areas.

ROBERT TILLSLEY CHAIR, RAMAPO COLLEGE FOUNDATION BOARD OF GOVERNORS

Dr. Tim Finley ’94 (left), Board of Governors Chairman Robert Tillsley with his wife, Susan, at the capital campaign celebration reception in November.

The Ramapo College Foundation’s Board set a total campaign goal of $40 million. At the close of the fiscal year, the Foundation needed only $5 million more, an amount we’ve since exceeded. Prestigious government funding agencies such as the National Institutes of Health, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the National Science Foundation have recognized the merit of programs at the College by awarding grants that have allowed the Ramapo College Foundation to meet its grants and government goal of $15.5 million. The College greatly benefited from the $2-million gift from our dear friends and benefactors, Elaine and Mike Adler. Their gift helped launch a $54-million renovation and expansion

of the College’s G-Wing and establishes the Adler Center for Nursing Excellence. The Foundation is fiscally fit, evidenced by the remainder of our financial story. Restricted gifts increased 85.35%. Total revenues increased 61.38%. Restricted donations increased 177.47%. Total donation revenues increased 128.71%. Business Partner donations made through the Annual Fund increased 22.03%. Three-year total endowments increased 53.96%, while the three-year endowment principal increased 79.04%. The greatest satisfaction, however, comes from an increase in which direct assistance to students has increased. In their scholarship applications, students share compelling stories about parents losing jobs, the death of a parent, debilitating illness, and the inability to attend college without obtaining financial assistance. We are proud that there has been a 9.03% increase in the dollar amount of the awards, and a 7.67% increase in the average of awards. Ramapo College has worked hard to attract an international faculty that broadens the perspective of international education. The student body is

also internationally represented. In addition, we are extremely proud that the diversity of students attending Ramapo has increased, while continuing to achieve a higher academic threshold for admission. The Foundation continues to sponsor special events such as the Distinguished Citizens Dinner, the Annual Golf Outing, and the Performing Arts Series. These serve to strengthen our ties with the community, build on our relationship with major businesses located in the area, and raise funds vital to our mission. Membership in the Alumni Association continues to grow, as do the number of regional chapters. GOLD, Graduates of the Last Decade, was created to involve younger alumni in events specific to their age group. The generosity demonstrated by donors, alumni, the Board of Governors, the Trustees, the Friends of Ramapo, the President’s Parent Council, and corporate members of the Business Partners Program is inspiring. It is also a testament to the confidence shared about the outstanding liberal arts education offered at Ramapo College.

FURTHER OUR PROMISE: RAMAPO COLLEGE’S CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

Further Our

Promise: Ramapo College Celebrates 40+ Million Capital Campaign $

It was an evening marked by an extraordinary surprise announcement: On November 18, as friends and supporters of Ramapo College of New Jersey gathered to help kick off an ambitious $40-million capital campaign, they learned that a $3-million gift from benefactors Lawrence C. and Theresa Salameno had helped the campaign reach the $38-million mark. The inspiration for the gift was twopronged, and one of those prongs was deeply personal: the Salamenos’ daughter, Francesca, transferred to Ramapo as a sophomore and graduated with a dual degree in education and literature in 2005. It was a life-changing experience for her, and her enthusiasm for it was still apparent on the evening of the kick-off celebration. “I so enjoyed every minute of it,” she said of her three years at Ramapo. “I loved my literature studies and the hands-on experience I received with children in the classroom, and I had a blast.” The couple’s largesse was also motivated by their admiration for the strides the College has made over the past four decades. “I’ve been a resident of this area for 60 years,” Lawrence Salameno noted at the gala, “and I remember when the College opened.” He’s watched it grow, he said, from a small commuter school to an impressive educational institution “that’s going somewhere.”

4

Ramapo College Magazine Spring 2012

Theresa and Lawrence Salameno, for whom the Salameno Spiritual Center is named, made an additional $3-million dollar gift to the College. Their most recent gift will endow a Center of Excellence in British Studies and a Dean’s Scholarship Fund.

The Salameno’s gift will help to change the face of Ramapo by supporting the renovation of the A and B wings of the Academic Complex. And it will expand student opportunities by endowing both a Center of Excellence in British Studies and a Dean’s Scholarship Fund in the School of American and International Studies. All in all, it’s a fitting exemplar for a campaign designed to go hand-in-hand with the continued unfurling of Ramapo’s new branding theme, “Pushing Boundaries,” introduced in 2011. As President Peter P. Mercer noted in his welcoming speech at the event, “’Pushing Boundaries’ is not just a mantra, it’s not just a brand, and it’s not just a slogan. It is indeed the description of what it is that we do. We bring students in who are not aware of their full capacity and potential. We make them aware of it and, in the best sense of the word, we exploit it. That is our job, which we take on willingly.” Funds raised in the campaign, says Cathleen Davey, vice president of institutional advancement, “will enable us to further encourage our students to overcome all types of limits and boundaries and to have an incredible four-year experience.” As an example, she cites plans for new spaces in which students and faculty can engage in research together—an opportunity for the kind of hands-on learning experience that Ramapo

is known for, and future employers prize. The capital campaign, titled “Further Our Promise,” pushes boundaries in more ways than one. It’s the largest and most ambitious in the College’s history, surpassing the goal of the previous campaign in 1995 by $20 million. In fact, at kick-off the Ramapo College Foundation had already received gifts totaling $38.8 million and, as of press time, the fund had exceeded its initial $40-million goal by $900,000. But to effect the kind of changes necessary to keep Ramapo leading with the best small liberal arts colleges in the country, the Foundation plans “to strive well beyond that goal by the time the campaign ends in June of 2013,” says Davey. Ongoing Generosity To make that leap, the College is depending on the continued support of longtime donors and friends of Ramapo— people like Richard Anisfield (who passed away in October 2011) and his wife, Millicent, who have supported the College for a quarter century, endowing not just buildings but also faculty research, course enrichment, a deanship, and more. “We wouldn’t receive the gifts that we have if we didn’t have a special relationship with our benefactors,” notes President Mercer. He adds that among the most generous gifts received to date are some from donors,

like the Anisfields, who never attended Ramapo. Instead, says Davey, these are people “who have watched the College grow and are impressed with its leadership and its direction, so that we’re now becoming one of their top philanthropic priorities.” Personal Connections Myron “Mike” and Elaine Adler, for instance, have supported Ramapo for the past 25 years and contributed $2 million in the current campaign to build the Adler Center for Nursing Excellence, part of a major project to renovate the existing G building and the College’s science facilities. Their motivation was, in part, personal: “My father was a doctor who graduated in 1904,” says Mike Adler, “and I thought it would be a fitting tribute to him.” But the Adlers have also long been impressed with the quality of the faculty and the enthusiasm of the students at Ramapo. “I walk the campus and sometimes I’ll see a student and ask, ‘How do you like this school?’” says Elaine Adler. “I have never, ever heard a negative answer.” The expansive two-and-a-half-story nursing building bearing their name will connect to the G wing through an overhead walkway, and it will accommodate an eightstation nursing simulation lab, a conference room, a student lounge, a dean’s suite, and a tiered classroom with the capacity

to seat 60 students, as well as additional classrooms, labs, and faculty offices. Other private gifts will go toward providing the College’s laboratories and science classrooms with a desperately needed facelift. “We’ve known for some time that many of our facilities are significantly outdated,” says President Mercer. That’s been something of an impediment for the large number of students—nearly one-quarter of the student body—enrolled in the School of Theoretical and Applied Sciences. Nevertheless, the College continues to attract students with a passion for the sciences, in part because of the quality of its faculty, and Mercer notes that “we have trouble meeting the demand for our biology classes because we have so many students who are interested.” The capital campaign and, specifically, the Adlers’ gift, he says, “are going to mean that students pursuing a science education will be able to take advantage of the best facilities we can offer.” The goal is in line with the College’s ongoing mission to foster lifetime success for its students. “We are focused on our students,” notes President Mercer. “That is our emphasis— to transform the lives of our students who enter Ramapo College as freshmen and leave ready to take on the world.”

Buildings that Push Boundaries Consider Ramapo’s business students, who are currently reaping the benefits of $5.5 million in gifts by Richard and Millicent Anisfield toward the construction of the business school which opened in 2008. Today, the Anisfield School of Business is housed in a state-of-the-art facility that includes two high-tech lecture halls, an email lounge, 40 faculty offices, break-out rooms for seminars, 14 “smart” classrooms, and a new Global Financial Markets Trading Lab. The business school building isn’t the only brick-and-mortar evidence of the campaign’s early success. The Salameno Spiritual Center, a challenge grant from Lawrence and Theresa Salameno, opened its doors in October 2010. It’s housed in a sleek, modern building set on the south shore of Kameron Pond, and offers students and faculty a nondenominational space for meditation, reflection, and refuge. Theresa Salameno, who has been serving on the Foundation’s Board of Governors since 2002, explains why she and her husband felt the center was such a good fit for them: “We’re a family that believes in having spiritual values,” she says. “Our thought was that, no matter what your religion or beliefs, you get to walk in through the door of the center and be one with each other.”

FURTHER OUR PROMISE: RAMAPO COLLEGE’S CAPITAL CAMPAIGN (CONTINUED) >CAPITAL CAMPAIGN, CONTINUED

(L-R): Francesca Salameno Calabrese ’05 and Charles Salameno with their mother, Theresa. Mrs. Salameno and her husband, Lawrence, announced a $3-million gift to the Ramapo College Foundation.

Trustee George C. Ruotolo Jr., President Peter P. Mercer, and Trustee Sharon McGahee

Theresa Salameno, who was born in Britain, notes that the couple’s most recent gift—the endowment of a Center of Excellence in British Studies and a Dean’s Scholarship Fund in the School of American and International Studies—is perfectly in line with the family’s experience and interests. “My husband reads history night and day, and I feel like I have one foot in one country and one foot in the other,” she explains. The gift also resonates with them philosophically: “The world is so interconnected today,” she says, “that to be insular would be to go backward.” Lawrence Salameno, Chairman, Penny Black Holdings and a graduate of Cornell University, focuses much of his philanthropic giving on education, and he’s especially cognizant of the needs of small liberal arts colleges. “Schools like Cornell and Harvard have plenty of money,” he observes. “But the smaller colleges are hurting in our current economic climate, so I think it’s incumbent on those of us who can give back to do whatever we can.”

dad, who never got past eighth grade, and the work ethic and example he set for me. And second is Ramapo College. Having an interdisciplinary education, which balanced the focus on business with the liberal arts, gave me the opportunity to obtain the skills that I needed to be successful. I loved every minute of it, from the intense study of literature with outstanding faculty members to the hands-on experience with children in the classroom. I am so fortunate to have had such a great experience at Ramapo.” Hackett graduated with a dual degree in Business and American Studies, and she accomplished that, she says, “the hard way.” Working full-time at Prudential and taking 14 credits a semester. “I didn’t come from an affluent family by any stretch of the imagination,” she recalls, “so dad said, ‘When it comes time to go to college, you’ve got to pay your own way.’ If I can help people take an easier pathway, that’s what I want to do.” She’s providing that help by endowing six scholarships, including one specifically for emergency medical technicians in the name of her husband, David, a volunteer EMT himself.

A Grateful Alumna Fran Hackett ’80, a vice president at Prudential and chair-elect of the Ramapo College Foundation’s Board of Governors, has also been impressed with Ramapo’s progress, but she has an even more personal reason for supporting the current campaign. “There are two areas I can attribute my success in life to,” she says. “First and foremost is my

6

Ramapo College Magazine Spring 2012

Helping Students Succeed In fact, scholarships are a priority of the current capital campaign, says President Mercer, “because they allow us to provide an opportunity for students who are trying to make their way in this economy. That is indeed what we should be doing today— accommodating more and more people into

the workforce through education—[and] the education that they need is the education that Ramapo College has to offer.” A new endowment, the Evelyn Aronow Fellowship, for example, will support an internship at a not-for-profit organization, something that might otherwise be out of bounds for students of limited means, since not-for-profit internships are generally unpaid. Hands-on learning through internships is a core value of Ramapo, and the Aronow Fellowship, says Davey, helps the College “offer internships in every field, and introduce our students to different working environments.” Since its founding in 1969, Ramapo has been dedicated to supporting students financially who might not otherwise be able to afford a college education. Fran Hackett remembers her days at the College in the 1970s: “After the Vietnam War ended, there were many returning veterans at Ramapo, and the College was very flexible, offering things like Saturday programs designed to make it easier for them.” At around the same time, Marion Dugan, who graduated from Ramapo in 1980 with a degree in public administration, was enrolling at the College as a returning student in her 40s. A founder and vice chair of the website Charity Navigator, Dugan remembers “running into a lot of people in my age group who were returning and needed help.” That experience is one of the key reasons she and her husband, Pat, chose

to donate $100,000 to create an endowed scholarship in the Community Scholars Program. Ramapo, she says, “has become a source of education for young people, including local people who need financial help and otherwise can’t find support.” The couple has given an additional $100,000 to pay for equipment in three engineering physics labs—a fitting gift, given Pat Dugan’s lifelong passion for the sciences. “We all know that science and math are what the country needs,” says Marion Dugan, “so it was important to us to get that major supported.” As previous residents of Mahwah for many years, the couple witnessed the College’s evolution firsthand. “I used to ride a dirt bike through the woods,” Pat Dugan remembers. “I could come right from our backyard and get into the property where Ramapo is now, and there was nothing there. What’s happened in the meantime is stupendous.”

Small Gifts with Enormous Impact While the College’s Business Partners and prominent benefactors may have higher philanthropic profiles, the great number of alumni who contribute smaller gifts play an essential role in the capital campaign. “In order for us to far surpass the $40-million goal, we’re going to need to go out to many, many people,” says Davey. While she admits that the economic downturn is cause for concern, she’s buoyed by the fact that, in terms of giving, Ramapo has typically had the highest alumni participation rate among NJ State colleges. Davey attributes that largesse directly to Ramapo’s core strengths: Small class sizes, an interdisciplinary academic structure, opportunities for hands-on learning, and—perhaps most importantly—an exceptional faculty that serves both as teachers and mentors. “Every alumnus who President Mercer and I have spoken with has a story about a faculty member who made a difference in his or her life,” notes Davey. For many alumni who treasure their experience at Ramapo, the latest capital campaign represents the chance to make a difference of their own.

A Community Effort That evolution has been fostered by Ramapo’s close relationships with the surrounding business community, which has traditionally provided both internship opportunities and financial support. The College’s Cooperative Education Program enables students to work in the community in their particular areas of interest. “It’s an invaluable experience for students,” says local business owner W. Peter McBride, who’s been a member of the Ramapo College Board of Trustees for the past 14 years,

“and it’s been great for the College, because we’ve developed really good relationships with a lot of organizations in the area, from corporations to hospitals.” Those relationships benefit students (many of whom, McBride notes, “graduate already knowing where they’re going to work”), as well as the businesses themselves and the College as a whole. “Our Business Partners have always been tremendously generous toward Ramapo,” Davey observes, “and in this difficult time economically, we’re seeing a strong return of support from corporations.” Sharp Electronics, headquartered in Mahwah, has been a particularly strong partner over the past quarter century, and in the current campaign the corporation has contributed more than $350,000 to help construct the Sharp Sustainability Education Center. The building’s design is truly visionary: Constructed of recycled and sustainable materials, it makes the most efficient use of orientation and natural light; heating and cooling are generated by a geothermal system; and photovoltaic panels provide electricity. The center offers environmental learning opportunities across a wide variety of disciplines and provides educational programming for local elementary and high schools. “We believe strongly in higher education,” says David Alai, a corporate vice president at the corporation in charge of community relations and charitable giving. “For 26 years, Ramapo and Sharp have been good neighbors.”

E

ducational experiences outside the classroom have allowed many Ramapo College students to explore a faraway part of the world, work with people very different from themselves, or start something new. Through an internship or study abroad experience, classroom concepts come alive. Students who feel strongly about a cause can create a club or fraternity dedicated to that issue. This kind of personal involvement expands students’ knowledge, and gives them the confidence to “push boundaries” once they graduate.

PUSHING BOUNDARIES OUT OF THE CLASSROOM “Ramapo has made me a social justice and patient care advocate,” says Lauren Finaldi, who received three scholarships through the Ramapo College Foundation last year. They were the Elizabeth Mainardi Scholarship, the Empathy Scholarship, and the Dr. Gary Kettlitz Memorial Scholarship. Lauren graduated from Ramapo in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. As an undergraduate, Lauren completed a study abroad program in Sierra Leone, West Africa, to reduce maternal and infant mortality and morbidity. As president of Phi Delta Epsilon, an international medical fraternity, she developed an educational lecture, “Health Disparities Among Minority Populations,” presented at the College’s Health and Wellness Fair. Lauren now works in the Acute Care for the Elderly unit at The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, New Jersey. “Every day I truly use the skills and lessons I have learned in and out of the classroom at Ramapo,” she says. Kyle Ulscht received the David Blauer Scholarship and the Police Officer Michael J. Buczek Scholarship. He graduated last May with a degree in law and society. His minor was in economics. During his senior year at Ramapo, Kyle worked with other students, alumni, and business leaders in the community to establish a chapter of the Golden Key International Honor Society. Golden Key is an international organization dedicated to personal, professional, and altruistic achievement among college students. Kyle served as the Ramapo chapter’s first president. Another scholarship recipient who started an on-campus organization is Loryn Britton. Loryn co-founded Above the Influence, a student-run club whose purpose is to raise awareness of substance abuse among college students. Loryn graduated in 2011 with degrees in both psychology and social science/community mental health. She received the John J. Krebs, SJ Scholarship. While a student, Loryn was an intern with the admissions unit of New Views, a part of Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital in Morris Plains, New Jersey. She shadowed a senior counselor screening patients for substance abuse. She also helped run groups for those dually diagnosed. “The internship was the thing that most prepared me for my future. I am very thankful for having the chance to participate and to Professor Marshall Harth for all of his help and encouragement,” Loryn says. She is currently working at Summit Oaks Psychiatric Hospital as a mental health associate. Kyle Ulscht ’11
