from the office of the president PETER P. MERCER, Ph.D.

Dear Friends, There is much to be proud of at Ramapo College. During my decade of service at the College I have been immensely fortunate to see the shared vision of so many come to fruition. From the strategic growth of our physical plant to the enthusiasm and rigor with which we deliver on our academic mission, the features of a Ramapo College education have led to our emergence as a top choice among prospective students and educators. Our physical map has been transformed by significant projects including the Adler Center for Nursing Excellence, Anisfield School of Business, Salameno School of Humanities and Global Studies, Salameno Spiritual Center, Sharp Sustainability Education Center, residence halls, and the impressive renovations to our applied and social science instructional space and student social spaces. Further, we have been witness to the beautification of our bucolic surroundings via the cultivation of the sustainability wildflower meadow, the expansion of the Arch area and surrounding pavilion, and a refreshed wayfinding schema. These enhancements to our campus foster, in so many significant ways, our ability to deliver on our academic promise. New and revitalized spaces have contributed to the robust growth of our graduate programs (now totaling eight), our student/faculty undergraduate research efforts, and our commitment to small class sizes focused on hands-on learning and interdisciplinarity. Our efforts are admired not only by those whom we serve but also by those beyond our campus surrounds. The College continues to be favorably recognized by ranking agencies including Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, U.S. News and World Report, Washington Monthly, Victory Media’s Military Friendly Schools and Niche.com (#1 Dorms). In addition, we have received significant grant and philanthropic support from prestigious entities such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the National Institute of Health, and the National Science Foundation. These acknowledgements, and most important, those that come from our donors and alumni continue to be integral to our capacity to proudly serve as the state of New Jersey’s designated public liberal arts college. It is, indeed, a privilege to serve as your President. Thank you for your commitment and contributions to Ramapo College’s past and future success. Sincerely,

Peter P. Mercer, Ph.D. President, Ramapo College of New Jersey B

hen Peter Mercer is asked in what ways the Ramapo College student body has changed over the ten years since he was installed as the College’s fourth president, he responds with his signature deadpan humor. “When I started here, prospective students were inclined to ask me whether they’d have their own bathroom,” Mercer says. “Five years later, they wanted to know if our business school was accredited.” For the record: They would. And it is. But upgraded dorms and an elevated stature for Ramapo’s business graduates just hint at the breadth of the College’s evolution during Mercer’s tenure. Mercer assumed the president’s office on July 1, 2005, which means he’s led the College for nearly a quarter of its existence. For Ramapo, it’s been a period of seismic changes—in its student body profile, its standing among peer schools, its fundraising prowess, and, perhaps most strikingly, in the very look of its 300-acre hillside campus. A native of Canada, Mercer came to Ramapo from the University of Western Ontario, where he initially taught Law. Later he served as dean of the Law School and as a Vice President and General Counsel. (He’d learned about the Ramapo position from his brother-in-law, who lives in Mahwah.) His own academic bearing was defined by the liberal arts, so Ramapo seemed like a snug fit. “I believed—and do believe—the College had remarkable potential,” Mercer says, “and that it hadn’t received the recognition it really deserved as a fine liberal arts institution.”

Those most familiar with Mercer’s tenure frequently cite his collaborative managerial style and his steadfast— and often self-deprecating—sense of humor. “I always think of Bill Clinton’s line when he was asked what it’s like to be president of the United States,” Mercer says. “He said it’s like being president of a graveyard—you have a lot of people underneath you, but nobody’s paying attention.” Around campus, Mercer has made himself a familiar figure. He and his wife, Jacqueline Ehlert, a dietician with a Ph.D. from Columbia, routinely open the doors to the Havemeyer House—the 166-year-old mansion that serves as the official residence of the Ramapo president—welcoming hundreds of faculty members, donors, administrators and students to more than 60 events a year. Three years ago, to commemorate the opening of the Adler Center for Nursing Excellence, they presided over a sit-down dinner for 78 guests. “I don’t know any other president of a college who has had faculty in his house so often,” says Anthony Padovano, a distinguished professor of literature and philosophy who has been at the College since 1971. Unless he’s traveling, Mercer attends every open house for high school seniors. “It’s important for prospective students and their parents to see the president, to see the provost and the dean, and other members of the senior team,” Mercer says, “so that when we say we’re concerned about giving you a good education, we’ve got some credibility.” As a leader, he’s focused more on finding common ground with Ramapo’s constituencies, who include students, professors, administrators, staff, trustees, www.ramapo.edu

“I have felt good about my ability to deal with all the presidents of the College,” Padovano says. “Of all of them, I thought that Peter’s been the one I’ve felt most at ease with.” George C. Ruotolo, Jr., the chair of Ramapo’s Board of Trustees, says he’s been struck by Mercer’s humility. “I would say whatever ego he has—and I think he has a lot to be proud of in terms of his accomplishments—he does a very good job of keeping it in check,” Ruotolo says.

alumni, parents and donors. “You can’t just come in and decide you’re going to, by fiat, change things,” Mercer says. “I would describe it as the equivalent of punching a wall of foam rubber. You make an impression while your fist is in there, but you take it off for a second and the wall is exactly where it was. If you don’t care who gets credit for something, and I really don’t, I think it makes it easier to move ahead.” Padovano, a founding faculty member, commends Mercer for his accessibility.

Mercer says his own experience as a college professor has helped him work with Ramapo faculty. “If you do have a criticism of the College or even something Peter has initiated,” Padovano says, “you’re able to sit down with him and talk about it without his feeling threatened or defensive. You get the impression that’s he’s listening so he can evaluate not just you but also himself.” Ehlert says her husband’s straight-talking approach has aided his relations with the faculty. “He will lay out issues and then, in a very respectful way, seek their advice and propose his views of how things need to be approached,” she says. “He really seeks consensus, and people rally around that.” Not long after Mercer and Ehlert arrived in Mahwah—they were married just six days before settling into the Havemeyer House—Mercer let it be known that he wanted to increase the racial and ethnic diversity of Ramapo’s student body while simultaneously raising the College’s academic standards. “Many people said you could do one,” Mercer says, “but not the other.” Ten years later, Ramapo, has done both. Today racial and ethnic minorities represent nearly 30 percent of the student body—a nearly 50 percent increase from ten years ago and a figure more closely aligned with New Jersey’s statewide population. One factor has been a program begun several years ago to help students from low-income families stay in school and graduate. The program provides

additional funds for first-year students enrolled in Ramapo’s Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) program, in which qualified, many first-generation, college students receive financial and academic assistance. Mercer noticed in his earliest years that a disturbing number of EOF students were not returning to Ramapo after their first year, while the graduation rate for EOF students lagged behind that of the overall student body. For many families, Mercer says, even with the financial aid given to EOF students, it posed a significant hurdle. He proposed using discretionary funds to eliminate that hurdle altogether and enable first-year EOF students to attend Ramapo cost-free. “It was amazing what happened,” Mercer says. “Retention and graduation rates improved to the same level as the rest of the student body, and they’ve stayed there.” By any variety of measures, Ramapo has raised its national profile substantially during Mercer’s presidency. In 2011 the business school was formally accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the largest such accrediting agency. Worldwide, less than five percent of business schools have earned this distinction. Earlier this year Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine named Ramapo among the “100 Best Values in Public Colleges” nationwide, the tenth straight year that Ramapo has made the list. U.S. News & World Report also ranked Ramapo fifth among public institutions and 26th overall in its “Regional Universities North Rankings.”

State support for Ramapo’s general fund has been sliced in half during Mercer’s tenure—from nearly 50 percent to about 25 percent. It’s a common trend among the states but one especially detrimental to a small, public liberal arts college with aspirations to raise its academic profile. “Asking people if they want to spend more money on higher education is kind of like asking them if they want to go to heaven,” Mercer says. “They say it’s a good idea, but not right now.” Raising money, then, has become more important than ever. Under Mercer’s watch, Ramapo embarked on the most ambitious fundraising campaign in the history of the College. Some 13,500 donors contributed more than $56.1 million to the Further Our Promise Campaign for Ramapo College, or 40 percent more than the campaign’s $40 million goal.

“The money itself is extremely important, there’s no doubt about it,” Mercer says. “But it’s important not just for being a specific sum that you can apply for a Adler Center for Nursing Excellence - 2015

particular expense. It’s important also for what it symbolizes. We can go to our faculty and our students and our prospective students and their families and our staff and say, people think enough of us to have given beyond the goal we set for our campaign. That does a tremendous amount for morale.” During Mercer’s tenure, assets at the College Foundation grew by 218 percent. Restricted assets to primarily support student scholarships increased by 366 percent. The Endowment is now more than $16.1 million and provides over $500,000 for more than 350 named Foundation Scholarships.

Ramapo also made significant upgrades to its Salameno School of Humanities and Global Studies, science facilities, the Les Paul Music Production Studio, the Scott Student Center, the Bradley Sports and Recreation Center, Potter Library, and the Birch Mansion. All told, Ramapo has invested $438 million in renovations and new construction during Mercer’s tenure. It’s an impressive figure, and a reminder of Mercer’s ethos of teamwork. “If you don’t like the people with whom you work with and you don’t like the environment in which you operate, you’ll never be as effective as you might otherwise be,” Mercer says. “And I genuinely like the people I work with.”

believed— and do “ Ibelieve —the College had remarkable potential.” - President Peter P. Mercer

Ruotolo credits Mercer with playing a vital role in the campaign’s success. “He’s very good at presenting a vision for the future of Ramapo and getting people to want to affirm the vision through philanthropy,” Ruotolo says. “A lot of college presidents do it begrudgingly. Peter doesn’t do it begrudgingly. He does it with a purpose.” The sweeping renovation of Ramapo’s campus over the past ten years has included new construction such as Laurel Hall, with 432 suitestyle dorm rooms; the Salameno Spiritual Center, a space for reflection by believers and humanists alike; the Sharp Sustainability Education Center, which is heated and cooled by a geothermal system; the Adler Center for Nursing Excellence, home to Ramapo’s highly regarded nursing program; and the Anisfield School of Business, home to its accredited business program.

STUDENT SUCCESS

HANDS ON EXPERIENCE FOR RAMAPO STUDENTS Ramapo College was founded on four educational pillars of international, intercultural, interdisciplinary and experiential learning, which provide students with a strong, holistic liberal arts education while on campus. This past spring and summer, Ramapo students supplemented their on-campus courses with extraordinary and exciting experiences outside of the classroom. They participated in research projects, study abroad coursework and internships at a variety of businesses and institutions in New Jersey, across the country and around the world. BRANDON BASKETT ’16 (Engineering Physics) worked in the Drug Safety Operations Division of Celgene Corporation, in Summit, N.J., specifically in Safety Operations. Among his responsibilities were building a competency program for new hires into the Drug Safety Department, building a map of the company’s intranet site and assisting the employees working in training to fix "dead links" on the existing training programs. Brandon also created the Internship Experience Club at Celgene. ZACHARY BATREN ’16 (Environmental Science) had an internship with the New Jersey Audubon Society. Zach is an experienced field worker who has come back to college to get his degree in Environmental Science. NATHANIEL BIRRER ’17 (Engineering Physics) accepted an internship at William and Mary College, Virginia, where he participated in high energy physics research. Tobar discussed his book, Deep Down Dark: The Untold Stories of 33 Men Buried in a Chilean Mine, and the Miracle That Set Them Free, a true account of the 2010 event that made international headlines. The book was a finalist for the 2014 National Book Critics Circle Award in the General Nonfiction category. “It was important for me to tell this story in the words of the miners themselves,” said Tobar. “The mine became their church, a place to survive but also to unite and pray together. It’s a story of their hope and courage in the face of an unimaginable situation.”

AFRICANA STUDIES NOW IN SALAMENO SCHOOL FOR HUMANITIES AND GLOBAL STUDIES The Ramapo College Board of Trustees recently approved the relocation of the Africana Studies major and minor from the School of Social Science and Human Services (SSHS) to the Salameno School for Humanities and Global Studies (SSHGS). The move promises to strengthen Africana Studies at Ramapo and help achieve the College’s strategic goals related to advancing “Academic Excellence and Engagement,” cultivating and supporting “Diversity and Inclusiveness” and “Comprehensive Internationalization.” SSHGS is a natural home for Africana Studies. The program’s two faculty members, Karl Johnson and David Colman, are historians by training and participate regularly in the History and American Studies convening groups. The appointment of Johnson and Colman to SSHGS reunite the Ramapo history faculty under one roof and provide Johnson, Colman and SSHGS with a wider range of curricular offerings. The move also achieves curricular alignment between the program and its home school and strengthens the program’s preexisting humanities and global emphasis. www.ramapo.edu

FOUNDATION NEWS

PATHWAYS PROGRAM OFFERS PERSONALIZED TRANSITION OPPORTUNITIES Ramapo College’s mission is to provide every student with an excellent education and personal experience that will shape their lives and lead them on the road to success. Now, thanks to the tremendous support of a most generous gift, there is a program in place that will help students develop a rich understanding of the career development process and promote self-awareness and experiential learning as they venture into life beyond Ramapo. Nick and Susan Vallario have enthusiastically endowed five separate and unique Pathways Programs for each of the College’s schools to help every Ramapo student prepare for their post-graduation experience. Beyond the classroom, the students will be able to demonstrate that they can lead, can work well on a team and have real-world experience. Ms. Vallario joined the College’s Board of Trustees in 2014. “We are so grateful for Nick and Susan’s very generous gift, which will touch the life of every student at Ramapo. The program’s unique design, which is tailored specifically to a student’s major, will provide a tremendous opportunity for our undergraduates to explore their career options and ultimately become better prepared to successfully navigate the labor market before entering the workforce,” said Peter P. Mercer, President of Ramapo College. The Career Pathways Program of the Anisfield School of Business, established in 2013, has helped business majors through hands-on activity and direct interaction with advisors in the Cahill Career Development Center. The Program, designed to help students secure internships while in school, has been met with outstanding success. Sixty-nine percent of graduating seniors in 2015 participated in one or more co-ops and/or internships versus 55 percent in 2012. Professional full-time employment upon graduation also has increased, with 71 percent of graduating seniors securing professional employment before graduation, the highest level in the past five years. Effective fall 2015, completion of the Career Pathways Program is now a graduation requirement for every business major to help ensure all ASB graduates will “hit the ground running” as they launch their careers. “Researchers Liu, Xu and Weitz found in 2011 that internships and other hands-on experiences serve as invaluable opportunities to socialize students into the norms of the workplace and technical competencies, as well as foster individual emotional sharing and growth,” said President Mercer. “The inclusion of the Pathways Program into the curriculum signals Ramapo’s commitment to our students’ academic success as well as the College’s approach to engaging students in meaningful experiences that foster a continuum of personal and professional 16

Ramapo College Magazine | Winter Annual Report FY15

learning. Through internships, study abroad programs, volunteer service, student leadership positions, valuable mentoring experiences and having the opportunity to complete undergraduate student – faculty research, our students gain the competitive edge.” The ASB program is delivered in three sequential modules, tailored to the specific needs of the business student. Module 1, “Career Assessment/Advising,” encourages students to engage in self-reflection using Focus2, a web-based career self-assessment tool that is invaluable in obtaining knowledge of various career opportunities relating to a student’s personal proficiencies, beliefs and interests. Upon completion of the Focus2, students meet in small group sessions with fellow business majors and an ASB career advisor to discuss ways to connect classroom learning with industry expectations. Module 2 provides students with guided practice and feedback in communicating their attributes, skills and experiences relative to job requirements. In this module, students spend a significant amount of time writing a professional resume, creating a robust LinkedIn profile and developing a cover letter tailored to a specific job description. Module 3, “Interview Practice,” focuses on transitioning from written to verbal communication, and prepares students to speak about their goals, education, skills, work interests and values with industry professionals. Specific activities in this module include researching a prospective employer, developing an introductory “elevator pitch” and conducting a practice interview using the Cahill Center’s video interviewing software, InterviewStream. Through these activities, students realize the value of being prepared and having an opportunity to practice interviewing while in a safe environment. Pathways was introduced in the Salameno School of Humanities and Global Studies for the 2014-15 academic year -- but with a different approach that is tailored more to the goals of its students. “Our students have different post-graduation goals from ASB students so Pathways has been designed to best suit their needs,” said SSHGS Dean Stephen Rice. “Quite often, they have more in mind than taking a straight career path.” “The SSHGS Pathways Program focuses on assisting students on four main fronts,” Dean Rice said. *Career – geared for students who are aiming for a teaching or publishing career, for instance. “We help them focus on what they need to do while they’re here at Ramapo to best achieve that goal,” Dean Rice said.

David Ermann ’17, political science major with Annmarie Michalek, SSHGS Pathways Program Coordinator

*Graduate and professional school – “We show the students how to look at their options if they wish to pursue an advanced degree, such as an MFA or law degree,” Dean Rice said. *Service organization – students receive assistance in how to enlist in the Peace Corps, Americorps and other domestic and/or international service-organizations. *Transition time – “Not all students are necessarily ready to finish their studies and get right to work, and many of them leave college with a sense of uncertainty,” said Dean Rice. “We let them know that it’s okay to feel that way, but we provide services and resources that they can explore during that transitional year. This gets to the heart of what college should be and supports a broader vision of the educational experience.” The true testament of Pathways’ success has been the growing interest in our students from the employment community. The Cahill Career Development Center has reported a surge in recruitment this year, with a substantial increase in career fair participation and subsequent internship and full-time employment opportunities offered by local businesses and service organizations. The most exciting outcome of the established Pathways Programs is that they serve as a model for Ramapo’s three other schools: the School of Theoretical and Applied Science

(TAS), the School of Contemporary Arts (CA) and the School of Social Science and Human Services (SSHS). The Deans of TAS, CA and SSHS have begun mapping out preliminary goals and objectives for students, with ideas to meet the needs of majors whose disciplines are unique to their respective academic programs, such as acting, pre-law and nursing. For example, workshops, guest speakers and campus visits by professionals in the arts will help inspire students and provide motivation for their own job searches. Students in SSHS majors may need assistance to prepare for graduate school requirements such as the LSAT or GRE. The TAS Pathways Program will help students preparing for careers in the science or health-related industries. “Through their professional careers, Nick and Susan have witnessed first-hand the need for students to be better prepared as they compete to enter the workforce,” said President Mercer. “We thank them for their vision and belief that each and every student should be guided through that process of securing a great job or being accepted in their dream graduate program with a fellowship. Ramapo’s program is unique because our students are invited to be part of a four-year career plan that is designed by their dean and faculty to meet the needs of students from various disciplines and with various post-graduation goals.” www.ramapo.edu

BOARD MESSAGES

GEORGE C. RUOTOLO, JR., CFRE CHAIR, RAMAPO COLLEGE OF NEW JERSEY BOARD OF TRUSTEES

“The Board engaged deeply in the College’s shared commitment to foster a safe campus for our students, faculty and staff.”

The Board of Trustees continues to keep the students of Ramapo College at the forefront of our work, and we took action on a number of academic enhancements during the 20142015 year. For example, the Master’s in Social Work program was launched, with a record number of applicants for the fall 2015 semester. In addition, the Board approved new minors in Neuroscience and Earth Science, and the Africana Studies program was moved to the Salameno School of Humanities and Global Studies. Trustees are pleased to boast to our professional networks that Ramapo College is now a master’s granting institution, thanks to the approval of a change to the mission by the State Secretary of Higher Education.

to foster a safe campus for our students, faculty and staff. With the Board’s support, the administration embarked on a rigorous plan to strengthen our extensive programs and procedures related to sexual assault. Former New Jersey Attorney General Anne Milgram led a review of College policies, and the College commissioned a study of its sexual assault prevention, alcohol abuse awareness and bystander intervention programs. Recommendations from these reports were implemented during the year and will continue to be assessed in 2016. To these ends, the Board received professional development on topics such as Title IX, the Clery Act and emergency preparedness.

The Board also approved a series of capital improvement projects during the year. Those projects included a redesign of the food services in the Scott Student Center, residence hall renovations and improvements to the Birch Mansion and the courtyard between the G-and H-wings.

Finally, we bid a fond farewell to Patricia Kozakiewicz, who retired at the end of the year after more than 20 years as Executive Assistant and Board Liaison in the Office of the President.

In addition to moving forward on curricular and capital enhancements, the Board also engaged deeply in the College’s shared commitment

On behalf of the members of the Board, I would like to express my thanks to those whose financial and service contributions help us provide the best educational experience to Ramapo College’s students.

RALPH MASTRANGELO CHAIR, RAMAPO COLLEGE FOUNDATION BOARD OF GOVERNORS

“... generosity and loyalty of our supporters ... continue to shape the educational experiences and aspirations of Ramapo students”

The Ramapo College Foundation reached a number of significant milestones in 2015. Our “Further Our Promise” Comprehensive Capital Campaign reached more than $56.1 million, surpassing its original goal of $40 million. Capital projects, funded by our most stalwart supporters, resulted in the completion of major initiatives such as the Adler Center for Nursing Excellence and the Anisfield School of Business, as well as upgrades across the campus. These projects could not have been completed without the incredible generosity and loyalty of our benefactors. At the close of fiscal year 2015, endowments stood at $16.1 million, with 16 new endowments. The generosity of our donors also helped fund more than 350 scholarships totaling over $509,000. Scholarships are becoming more critical than ever to help ease the financial burden of our deserving students.

More than 56 individual state, federal and private grant proposals were submitted, a 50 percent increase over the previous year. Grants received from the U.S. Department of Education resulted in funding for the Office of Special Services and Ramapo College’s stewardship of science education in the poorest performing schools in Paterson. The faculty continues to pursue grant opportunities to enhance education and research, particularly undergraduate research with our students. The wonderful generosity and loyalty of our supporters, from financial support, to gifts of time, talent and expertise, continue to shape the educational experiences and aspirations of Ramapo students. With the enduring support of our donors, we remain proud of our past and incredibly optimistic for the future of the College and our students.

ECONOMIC FACTORS THAT WILL AFFECT THE FUTURE The major components of RCNJ’s operating revenue have changed over time. State support, as a percentage of the total revenues, has been declining over the last several years. The operating state appropriation was flat again this year, as it has been for the last several years. Operations at the College are negatively impacted by constrained state support. The College faces limited expense flexibility as salaries and benefits are the largest expenses the College has, and the State controls salary and benefit negotiations for a majority of employees at the College. New Jersey continues to face challenging economic times including the underfunding of the State’s pension plan. These economic factors may affect future appropriations to the College, and reduced appropriations may place an increased burden on tuition and fees to fund the operating costs. Enrollment is expected to grow modestly over the next few years, which should ease the pressures slightly. It is important for Ramapo to continue to sustain strong operating cash flows in order to meet its heavy debt obligations. The College will continue to seek new and enhanced revenue streams and operating efficiencies to maintain its ability to increase total net assets to meet the needs of its students. The College remains committed to its mission of serving the educational needs of New Jersey.

RAMAPO COLLEGE FOUNDATION FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS The mission of Ramapo College Foundation “is to provide resources that make the difference in Ramapo College of New Jersey’s quest for educational excellence.”The Foundation, established in 1971 as a nonprofit corporation, is a 501(c)(3) charitable institution. Its purposes include providing funds to Ramapo College for student scholarships, educational programs, faculty development and research, community programs, construction projects, capital needs, and other College activities for which state funds may not be sufficient or available.

all have a dedicated, specifically designed by each dean and his faculty, Pathways Program whose focus is on student success beyond college, with careers, graduate programs, service experiences and gap-year opportunities. The growth in the endowment also surpassed the yearly goal and is in line to meet the strategic goals set both by the Foundation and College. This is despite the 5% average spend rate, as compared to the average of 4.1% for all public institutions (according to National Association of College and University Business Officers fiscal 2014 statistics).

The Foundation’s financial report includes three basic financial statements: the Statements of Net Assets, the Statements of Activities, and the Statements of Cash Flows, which have been prepared in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America as promulgated by the Financial Accounting Standards Board. Presented below are condensed versions of these statements. The full Foundation financial statements including footnotes notes can be found on the College website:

The Grants Office had a successful year, despite the restructuring of the Meadowlands grant, securing more than 15 new grant awards in Fiscal 2015. This includes a new project with the Paterson Board of Education, impacting approximately 700 middle school students.

OPERATING SUPPORT AND REVENUE FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS In Fiscal 2015, the Foundation was delighted to complete its Further our Promise Capital Campaign in December 2014. The campaign, which was publicly announced in November 2011, was to raise $40 million, a goal that was later increased to $50 million. As seen in the chart below, the Foundation surpassed that revised goal, bringing in more than $56 million to support capital growth, grant activity, scholarship and endowments as well as unrestricted funds which allow the Foundation to provide additional support to the College. The Foundation’s financial position continues to be strong although the market did not continue its double-digit returns in Fiscal 2015, with a return of 1.37%, the endowment balance increased to more than $16 million. In Fiscal 2015, there were 16 new endowments created, including four established by College members, bringing in more than $600,000 in permanent funds, and pledges of $780,000 expected in future periods.

FUTURE OUTLOOK Continued emphasis will be placed on endowment growth and planned giving legacy programs, securing significant capital and programmatic support to renovate academic facilities, and increase annual fund participation levels. The Foundation is working to meet the goals of its five year Strategic Plan (2014-2018), along with its commitments to the College’s Plan. Specifically, the Foundation will strive to increase its operational support, endowment corpus and grant revenues by 5% annually. Additionally, the Foundation looks to bring in close to $7 million for capital projects with new donations and pledge payments received over the next five years, to mirror the College’s growth plan. www.ramapo.edu
