FALL 1937

Six students enrolled in The Ramaz Academy; classes met in the vestry rooms of Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun at 117 East 85th Street, where one teacher taught general studies and another taught religious studies.

By 1945, to accommodate the influx of students, Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun purchased the building they had been leasing.

1955 The first Ramaz

In 1971, Rabbi Haskel Lookstein '49 began his tenure as the principal of Ramaz, taking over from his father, Rabbi Joseph Lookstein z"l, when he stepped down.

Rabbi Lookstein graduated Ramaz in the class of 1949 with 10 other classmates.

Rabbi Lookstein, as a student, always measured a beaker as "half full."

Rabbi Lookstein began teaching at Ramaz in the fall of 1966.

1991 1987

First Ramaz student/ teacher delegation sent to the Soviet Union to meet with refuseniks.

Ramaz chaperoned 35 Upper School students to Israel to show support of Operation L'hitraot.

2014 Upper School Girls Varsity Basketball team played an undefeated season.

SEPTEMBER 1999 Ramaz Middle School Opened

In 1995, Rabbi Lookstein met with then President of Israel, Chaim Herzog z"l. After receiving his PhD in modern Jewish history from Bernard Revel Graduate School of Jewish Studies in 1977, Rabbi Lookstein's doctoral dissertation was published in 1985 under the title, Were We Our Brothers' Keepers: The Public Response of American Jews to the Holocaust 1938-1944.

In the FALL OF 2022 we were proud to enroll over 1,000 students, studying in three buildings.

After the devastating fire in 2011, Rabbi Lookstein envigorated the community by saying “Out of the ashes of destruction will come the seeds of reconstruction.”
