HONORING OUR COMMITMENT TO ISRAEL!

87TH ANNUAL RAMAZ DINNER Sunday, January 7, 2024 ‫כ״ז טבת תשפ״ד‬

‫ אני הולך לארץ ישראל‬,‫כל מקום שאני הולך‬ “Wherever I go, I am going to the Land of Israel.” Reb Nachman of Breslov These words capture the spirit and intention of a Ramaz education, which places Ahavat Yisrael, together with Jewish identity and pride, at the center of our students’ lives. Beginning in Early Childhood and extending throughout Lower, Middle, and Upper School years, student learning and experiences are infused with Israeli culture, language, and history, together with a strong commitment to Torah, mitzvot, and the rigorous pursuit of knowledge. At Ramaz, our students learn to connect deeply with Israel, to feel part of our Jewish homeland, and ultimately, to grow into engaged, empowered future Jewish leaders of our community.

Key milestones in Israeli history, in particular, the United Nations adoption of Resolution 181 forming the State of Israel, are transformed into an immersive learning experience. Each year, second graders conclude their study of Israel’s timeline by re-enacting the historymaking UN vote, with each taking on the role of a UN representative.

Israel education is a key component of Middle School History and Hebrew classes, during which students delve into the foundations of Zionism and the history of the State of Israel. When students in Gemara class “convene” the first World Zionist Congress of 1897, assuming the roles of Theodor Herzl and other significant delegates, they learn firsthand about how the Zionist platform was born. Israel Guidance at Ramaz reflects the diversity of our students who attend a variety of gap year programs in Israel. Ramaz works to equip them with tools to confidently navigate religious life, potential antisemitism, and anti-Israel sentiment on campus. This effort is being enhanced with a new twoyear program for our juniors. It features such noted speakers as NCSY Kollel Head Rabbi Moshe Benovitz and Rabbanit Chana Henkin, Rosh HaMidrasha of Nishmat, who answer challenging questions of how they muster Emunah during tough times or continue to say Tehillim when you think God may not answer.

The Gift that Keeps on Giving: A Ramaz education endures in the personal and professional choices of our over 6,000 alumni, who live, work, and lead with the rewards of unparalleled learning, Jewish values, and Israel advocacy that continue to inform their individual growth.

You can always count on a Ramaz alum

to say “Hineni” in the face of injustice and to stan d up for what is right–a value our students hold dear beyond graduation. Since October 7, the advocacy efforts that Ramaz alumni have led on campus has been nothing short of ama zing. By speaking at rallies, being interviewed by major news outlets, organizing challah bakes, writing op-eds in their campus newspapers, and traveling to Israel on school breaks, Ramaz alum on campus have been answering the call to action.

When we hear that an alumnus is making Aliyah, we feel we did something right. As of today, more than 500 Ramaz alumni are living in Israel. They are leading religious comm unities, learning and teaching at yeshivot and universities, working at innovative start-up s, defending our homeland in the IDF, and so much more. One of them is even President! Whe n our current students visit Israel and have the opportunity to engage with alumni at our reunions and gatherings, it leaves a lasting impa ct.
