TEACHERS are at the heart of every school and educational institution. This is especially true at Ramaz, where our outstanding educators encourage critical and creative thinking as they help students to excel academically, spiritually, and emotionally.
This year we are honoring four distinguished educators who represent the best of “Generation RMZ”: Jon Jucovy, Director of Humanities & History Teacher, Upper School; Sharon Arnold, Kindergarten Teacher, ECC; Tali Seinfeld, Second Grade Hebrew Teacher, Lower School; and Tzipora Ross, Judaic Studies Coordinator, Middle School.
When Dr. Jon Jucovy started looking for a high school teaching job over 41 years ago, he didn't know much about Ramaz. But Dr. Jucovy quickly realized that the students in his various history classes were passionate and enthusiastic about acquiring knowledge.
“There is a unique connection between the students and faculty at Ramaz,” said Dr. Jucovy. “We are all approachable to our students, who are never afraid to express their opinions on any topic. They are remarkably challenging, intriguing, and interesting.”
One of Dr. Jucovy's recent accomplishments is Ramaz's partnership with the Ghetto Film School. The collaboration allows students to learn the basics of filmmaking and other storytelling methods by helping them create original content focused on the history of Black and Jewish relations.
“This program exemplifies the kind of unique experience that Ramaz offers students,” said Dr. Jucovy. “It provides students with a strong academic foundation regarding filmmaking, and it incorporates the latest moviemaking technology. It's also a wonderful opportunity to collaborate with our neighbors from the Black community as
we build bridges, and engage with Ramaz alumni and the broader creative world.”
Initiatives like this one leave a mark on Ramaz alumni. Most gratifying to Dr. Jucovy is hearing how his students have succeeded later in life, whether as Supreme Court clerks, neuroscientists, lawyers, or history professors.
“It is always nice to hear that I have influenced students in their interests and career choices,” said Dr. Jucovy. “Ramaz teaches its students to be focused, diligent, and invested in their work and their communities.”
For Dr. Jucovy, Ramaz stands out from every other Modern Orthodox day school by being open to change while fulfilling the original mission of Rabbi Joseph Lookstein z”l. “Ramaz is committed to excellence in secular and Jewish education, but we aren't stuck in the narrowly defined definition of what that is. As American Jewry develops different viewpoints, our students are taught to discuss and analyze how these varying perspectives affect us and the society we live in.”
Upon graduating from Touro College, Sharon Arnold couldn't decide between teaching in a public or private school. We are lucky that Morah Sharon chose the Early Childhood Center at Ramaz, where she has played a key role in creating a nurturing and interactive environment for our children for the past 27 years.
Morah Sharon, who now teaches kindergarten, derives the most satisfaction from watching her students grow and become more self-sufficient.
“The more opportunities children have to try something independently, the more successful they are going to feel,” said Morah Sharon.
Over the years, the ECC kindergarten curriculum has become more focused on learning than on playing. Morah Sharon and her fellow teachers use a variety of hands-on pedagogical methods and tools, including games, music, art, and computers, to allow students to explore and interact with their surroundings.
“A big part of our day is spent on math, reading, and writing, and we also have a Hebrew immersion teacher in the classroom helping the kids learn basic conversational phrases,” said Morah
Sharon. “In addition, students learn about the Jewish holidays and different Torah stories.”
Also emphasized are various social skills, such as sharing, taking turns, and following directions, all of which contribute to classroom success.
“Providing our kids with positive reinforcement about how they treat others is a very important part of the kindergarten experience,” added Morah Sharon.
Morah Sharon credits her success and longevity to many people who came before her.
“I have been inspired by so many past and present teachers and administrators,” said Morah Sharon. “Ramaz is a warm and nurturing school where the teachers genuinely care about the kids, and where the teachers are willing and eager to help each other.”
Tali Seinfeld's approach to teaching her second graders can be summarized in one sentence: Create an environment where the children trust you both academically and socially.
Since she joined the Lower School in 1998, Morah Tali has helped it grow into a bilingual and multidimensional division of Ramaz. In addition, she has helped her students become more independent and confident.
“If I see a struggling child, I give that individual the tools he or she needs to try something different while making that child feel safe doing it,” said Morah Tali.
Among Morah Tali's most important contributions to the Lower School has been fostering a love of Hebrew language, Torah, and Israel in her students. She helped develop a new Tefillah curriculum that integrates concepts of gratitude and kindness, making it easier for kids to connect with davening. She stresses the importance of being a mensch to friends and family.
As Morah Tali's students have learned from her, she has learned from her students. “Our children are capable of doing more than we give them credit for,” said Morah Tali. “They like being challenged and
achieving their goals. Sometimes they just need to be pushed to take a few risks.”
Morah Tali is encouraged by many of the improvements to the Lower School over the past couple of years, including the incorporation of best teaching practices, cutting-edge technology in classrooms, and a strong rabbinical presence.
“Ramaz has been at the forefront of many educational advances that have had a huge impact on our students,” noted Morah Tali. “I am very proud to be part of such a dynamic and innovative school.”
Tali represents all of our educators, who have contributed to the legacy of Ramaz by helping create Gen RMZ and inspiring generations of students. We look forward to the continued accomplishments of Tali and others, whose unwavering commitment to scholarship, intellectual rigor, and lifelong love of learning know no bounds.
Tzipora Ross didn't start her teaching career at Ramaz, but it has certainly been the place where she has had the most impact. Since the fall of 1999, her first year at Ramaz, Ms. Ross has embodied the school's values and mission while enriching the lives of her Middle School students.
Ms. Ross was Ramaz's first female Talmud teacher to also teach Jewish history to eighth graders. She is a strong adherent of the interdisciplinary approach, where her students apply the knowledge they learn in one class to another.
“Making a connection between what I teach in Gemara may help them understand another concept from their Chumash class,” said Ms. Ross.
One of Ms. Ross's primary goals as a Ramaz educator is to help students become better Jews. This led to her involvement in improving the daily davening experience by adopting the Koren siddur specifically published for middle school children. Illustrations, photos, age-appropriate translations, and commentary are included within the text.
“Many children who are in the Middle School don't understand the meaning and relevance of prayers,” said Ms. Ross. “This siddur helps them become more emotionally involved in Tefillah.”
In her Jewish history class, Ms. Ross focuses on the rise of Zionism, the Holocaust, and the emergence of modern Israel, as well as American Jewish life. The culmination of her class is the eighth grade trip to Israel, especially the visit to Yad Vashem. “The Yad Vashem docents are always amazed with how much our students know about the Holocaust and its effect on so many aspects of Jewish history,” said Ms. Ross.
In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Ms, Ross is also the Torah Bowl coach, a faculty advocate, and the Book Room organizer over the summer.
Ms. Ross's appreciation for Ramaz extends to the school's vibrant and active parent community, which works tirelessly to improve students' educational experience. “The all-in nature of the Ramaz parent body, from fundraising to planning events to organizing chesed activities, is quite remarkable,” added Ms. Ross. “We are fortunate to have such a committed community that is so dedicated to our school.”
