Department of Education (DepEd) plans to implement the 12year “Enhanced Kindergarten-Grade 12 (K+12)” basic education program by school year 2012-2013 as presented by Education Secretary Bro. Armin A.Luistro during the World Teachers’ Day, October 5, this year. To facilitate the implementation, DepEd has to work with congress to amend the existing law, Batas Pambansa 232 or the Education Act 0f 1982,“which states that the basic formal education of the country is a 10-year program.” “DepEd is taking bold steps to enhance the basic education curriculum. The K+12 model will provide quality 12-year education that every Filipino is entitled to,” Luistro said. The K-6-4-2 Education Model which includes one year kindergarten, six years of elementary school (Grades 1-6), four years of junior high school (Grade 7-10), and two years of senior high school (Grades 11-12) will be
implemented in phases. It will start next year with the offering of a universal kindergarten program. It will be offered to Grade I and to First Year Junior High School students by June 2012, while the Senior High School education is intended to be implemented by 20162017. Students will receive diploma
after finishing junior high school and another diploma upon completing senior high school. The new education program adds two years to the existing education model in the Philippines, the only Asian country now, which is still implementing a 10-year basic education program.
COUNTRY’S FUTURE: The children are said to be the future of the nation. To make them as such, quality education is the key.

Department of Education (DepEd) through its Memorandum No. 392 issued on September 16, this year, has barred public school teachers from giving homework on weekends. “No homework/ assignments shall be given
NO WEEKEND HOMEWORK: This directive shows concern to this child and all the pupils to enjoy their weekends at home.
during weekends for pupils to enjoy their childhood and spend quality time with their parents without being burdened by the thought of doing lots of homework,” said Education Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro in his memo. The order was addressed to DepEd bureau directors, regional directors, school division and city superintendents and heads of public elementary schools nationwide. The memo covers more than 12.5 million students attending some 37,600 public elementary schools across the country. “Common homework/ assignments may include a period of reading to be done and writing to be completed, problems to be
solved and projects to be worked on, among others. The purpose of which is for pupils to increase their knowledge and improve their abilities and skills.” “However, it has been observed that parents complain about too many pupils’ homework or assignments which rob themselves and their children’s quality time to be together in more enjoyable activities,” the memo says. Considering the amount of work that went into accomplishing assignments, Luistro’s memo said that Teachers should give a “reasonable” amount of school work to be at home “to give their pupils ample time to rest and relax at home for the rest of the day.”

There are many who are poor. Only few pupils are equipped with their own school supplies. Lately in the SONA of P-Noy, additional two years in the curriculum of our students was talked about. Many agreed and disagreed with this program. The Alliance of Concerned teachers asked ,”Where does the government look for the budget for additional 2 years for the 20M students in elementary and high school while the 10 years is not yet accomplished?” Based on some reports, if there are 100 students in elementary, only 43 can afford to go to high school However, Bro. Armin Luistro said that K+12 could be of help because it can improve the learners’ skills. According to the reports, the additional two years in high school is focused on skill development and students become employable upon graduation. K+12 is good. It helps us even for those who can not graduate in college but if they graduated 6 years in high school, they can already find work early. They say that education and diploma is the only thing that our parents can surely give to their children. Education is our key in the future. Quality Education is an investment. Longer cost may cause loss. What do you think?
Once I was like them… -Thrysha A. Bandoy, VI
While I was walking on the street, I could not control the pains in my stomach due to hunger! But, every step of my way gave me hope to survive and I tried to convince myself that someday there will be light that will shine in my life. One day I sat in the corner of the street. Then, memories crept in. I didn’t know where the direction of my thoughts was. It was moving up and down … then it swirled then I was able to recall the saddest times of my life- when I turned a street child. I could remember that I was driven out by my parents because of the mistake that I never had done. Because of that, I forced myself to go away from our house. I was directionless and I suffered a lot living by my own. I thought they would look for me, but it did not happen. It was very painful to know that my family forgot all about me already. But I did not lose hope. I tried to sleep at the sides of the road and to eat food from the garbage. My life was full of pains and difficulties. Sometimes, I could eat but most often I couldn’t eat. Until one day I met a kindhearted woman who took me as her own child. She loved me so much. So, I compensated her love with the best I could in my studies until now. It is not far to recall because it’s me with my heaven –sent mother together loving and living in this better fate of life which I could hardly believe.

Readers are leaders! This line is addressed not only to recognize the wide- readers but is also a challenge for every pupil. October 27, this year was the Opening of the Regional Press Conference, RSPC 2010.Dignitaries and authorities in political and economic sectors were invited especially the Regional Director of DepEd, Dir. Gloria D. Benigno, Ph. D., CESO IV. Dir.Benigno said that if one wants to be successful in the contest and in his other endeavors, he must read…read…and read”.”A person who doesn’t like to read is no better than a person who does not know how to read”, she added. However, others say that
even if they like to read, they can do nothing more because they are poor. Jose Rizal proved how great is the importance of reading .Although they were not that rich but such situation did not hinder him to read always and to study more. See! He became our great hero! So, poverty is indeed not a hindrance to one’s dream to succeed. Reading is the key to success. If you do not read you can have more difficulties like you do not know how to write too if you do not read sample from the books. “Books are friends that are not mistaken” . Can they be your friends? This is an invitation to all the children, the hope of every family.

(from STC High School Dept.) Adding another year to our studies is beneficial to us because more time of learning adds more knowledge.- Kate Karym Santander-1st yr
In the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Thursday (September 16, 2010) Deped Memorandum No. 392 stated that “No more homework shall be given during weekends”. This orders teachers to avoid giving assignments to students on Friday, citing parents’ complaints about the heavy weekend study load of their children. “This memorandum was implemented for the pupils/students to enjoy their childhood and spend quality time with their parents without being burdened by the thought of doing lots of homework “said Education Secretary Armin Luistro in his Memo. But the Teachers’ Coalition (TDC) disagreed, saying weekend homework afford both parents and teacher occasion for quality time together.”In reality, making assignments can turn can turn into a bonding moment for parents and their children “said TDC spokesperson Emma Policarpio. Nowadays, we Filipinos need further knowledge ,and having assignments during weekends is the only way to increase our knowledge and ability. As what TDC spokesperson Emma Policarpio said “teachers know how much work to give students for the weekend and said assignments were meant to “develop self-learning, self-discipline and time management skills even without the supervision of teachers. “The DepEd has good intentions for the memo. But teachers know what kind of assignment s to give students: those that they can do on their own. Homework is not intended to burden children”, Policarpio said.

For me, it is beneficial but it adds financial problems for the school materials and miscellaneous fees. -Anelu C. Mellina-1st yr It is beneficial but not timely. We lack rooms , facilities and teachers which much be given priority budget first.- Cieva Grace D. Cabachete- 4th yr. Adding another year to Secondary is complicated .I think the DEpEd is not yet ready especially because the private schools are not fully supported – Francis Efren O. Rivas- 4th yr. It is one of the greatest fulfillment of the government and an opportunity to prove that we too are developed country. – Mario C. Mellina – 4th yr. I don’t agree with it because there is a possibility that a lot of poverty-stricken Filipinos cannot finish their studies -Gazelle Ella P. Serra- 3rd yr. It can strengthen relationship of teachers and students. – Jericho Hangad – 3rd yr.
Enhancing Skills of students to become employable upon graduation is the target of the implementation of K+12. Its motive is good but it is fact that it will be an additional financial burden to our parents. I hope will truly support the government this new program. -

Employable upon graduation on Senior High School? Well, it’s a help to the parents because students themselves could help finance their college schooling. -

No weekend homework? Good news, but some teachers give more assignments before Fridays. The same, we will finish them during weekends.

“Everything I do everyday is a challenge”. It may be difficult at the start and even as I go on doing it, I feel like stopping and giving up. But, because of my success, I gain a sense of fulfillment and eagerness to try again doing something much better than what I have done. Yes, this is what I’ve learned from the prestigious contest I had joined; the Search for G. & Bb. Kalikasan 2010.” It all started when my sister convinced me to join the said contest. At first, I was very hesitant but with the affirmation of my parents, Ate Ann and my classmates, I became so excited and thrilled. I can’t imagine how I did it. I had only 5 days to prepare for the said contest and worst! my tonsils was inflamed, and my doctor advised me to take a rest for a few days. Even then, I kept on memorizing my talent piece because there was no more time to back out and with high fever, headaches and pain in my larynx; I walked around the stage and tried to captivate the eyes of the judges. It was my first and final practice! Hehehe… When the minor awards were proclaimed, my body trembled and as if my nerves started to shrink and I really wanted to run and hide myself inside the box because I received none…I failed! When the chairman of the Board of Judges announced the final verdict, I was already reluctant…much more when

He looks physically tall handsome and normal but he has his other behavioral patterns that made him distinct and special. He is always bringing a strand of stick broom with piece of Styrofoam in its tip. He often plays but he has no playmates. He keeps what’s for his own advantage and is domineering to his siblings. Although he is a music lover, Hezon is easily destructed with noise for he is fond of concentrating as he used to draw. His masterpieces are truly amazing and his favorite subject is vehicles.
my number was not called from fourth runner-up to first runner-up. I felt shy and hopeless, but when I heard the chairman said, “You’ve got it right! G. Kalikasan 2010 is candidate number 2”… “Ha? Was that my number?” I even asked my fellow candidate standing beside me. “Did I hear it right? Did I win? Am I the winner?” When I looked at my mom sitting on the bleacher, she jumped over, smiling with tears on her eyes and shouted, “You did it, nak!” It was only then that I believed that I won. “I didn’t fail! I made it!” When the Regional Supervisor in Science, Dr. Hilda G. Berte put on the crown and Dr. Gregoria T. Su, our Asst. School Division Superintendent, gave me scepter, I was really overjoyed. I was in cloud 9! And when I looked at Mama and Ate with my sister together with my coaches, Teacher Rose, Teacher Glo, and Teacher Maika with tears of joy in their eyes, I was really touched and deep inside I said, “Thank you Lord for giving me this wonderful blessing and thank you also for giving me these coaches whose efforts were immense and incomparable. This wonder boy can easily follow directions and can manage to come and go to school alone. Unlike two years ago, Hezon can now communicate in long sentences and can read longer words. He can immediately recall facts especially numbers. That’s why be careful of your calendar because he roams around and readily changes your unupdated month page. He is conscious of time especially for the sake of his recess and lunch breaks. Try to harm him and we can surely see you in prison cell because he has the best memory in numbers like the vehicle numbers, telephone numbers including that of the police station. Hezon’s masterpiece is a replica of the vehicles in Tandag. His drawings also imply that he still has a long journey to enjoy this special life.

Manny Pacquiao vs. Antonio Margarito, billed as World Super Welterweight Championship, was a Super Welterweight fight for the WBC Super Welterweight championship. The bout was held on November 13, 2010 (US time, November 14 Philippine time) at Cowboys Stadium, in Arlington Texas. The match was put together after the second negotiation for the long awaited “super fight” between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, Jr. had failed. Pacquiao defeated Margarito by unanimous decision. Despite his smaller size (5’ 6 ½” vs. Margarito’s 5’ 11’’) and lower weight (148 lbs vs. Margarito’s 165 lbs), Pacquiao pummeled Margarito with his superior speed and technique. Margarito sustained three cuts, prompting Pacquiao to ask the referee, Laurence Cole, to stop the fight in round 11. Ringside commentators as well agreed that the fight should have been stopped. In his power and speed, Pacquiao
Pacquiao’s eighth Division Championship belt after beating the infamous Margarito
finished the fight with his lightning power punches to the body and head of defenseless Margarito. The fight went the distance when Pacquiao winning via unanimous decision over Margarito. Pacquiao almost knocked out Margarito in the 4th round with a left hook to the body and in the 6th round, Margarito connected a left hook to Pacquiao’s body sending him to the ropes and almost down. Pacquiao landed 474 out of 1069 punches while Margarito landed 229 out of 817 punches. Out of those
punches 411/713 power punches while Margarito only has 135/312. Due to his injuries, Margarito’s post fight interview was skipped and he was sent directly to the hospital after the fight. Margarito had to undergo a surgery as it was discovered that his right orbital bone had been fractured. “Boxing is not for killing. I did not want to damage him permanently”, Pacquiao said in his post interview.

The young word thinkers in action …
Do you want to increase your spelling skill and vocabulary? Then, be a scrabble enthusiast. Scrabble is a word game in which two to four players score points by forming words from individual lettered tiles on a game board marked with a 15-by-15 grid. The words are formed across and down in crossword fashion and must appear in a standard dictionary. Official reference works provide a list of permissible words. The Collins Scrabble checker can also be used to check if a word is allowed. The game is played by two to four players on a square (or nearly square) board with a 15-by-15 grid of cells (individually known as "squares"), each of which accommodates a single letter tile. In official club and tournament games, the play is always between two players (or, occasionally, between two teams each of which collaborates on a single rack). The board is marked with "premium" squares, which multiply the number of points
awarded: dark red "triple-word" squares, pink "double-word" squares, dark blue "triple-letter" squares, and light blue "doubleletter" squares. The center square (H8) is often marked with a star or logo, and counts as a doubleword square. The SDS SPED Center faculty and PTA encourage our school children to play this game for it helps boost our spelling skill and vocabulary. As a matter of fact, the previous GPTA officers purchased plenty of game boards such as scrabble, boggle and chess boards to encourage children to spend their time playing these board games instead of spending most of their time loitering and chitchatting. These were recently used in the School Reading Camp during the district-wide English festival and Reading Camp which is conducted every month of November. Because of this, the Spedians has dubbed Scrabble as a StudentBuddy Game.
