About Terre des hommes
Terre des hommes (Tdh) is a Swiss non-governmental organization that develops programs and projects in more than 35 countries to protect children in need. In Romania, Terre des hommes has had a continuous presence since 1992 and every year thousands of children and their families benefit from projects under our three main interventions: (1) Strengthening child protection and juvenile justice systems, (2) Protection of children affected by migration and trafficking, and (3) Social inclusion of Roma and other vulnerable groups. Following an assessment done in 2016 by the global child safeguarding movement Keeping Children Safe, Terre des hommes (Tdh) has been awarded the highest recognition - “Level 1 certification - for safeguarding children.
How we make protection work
In Romania, Terre des hommes is working at different levels to safeguard children in need. Thus: We provide small grants and technical assistance to local communities, empowering them to design and implement their own solutions to prevent violence, abuse or neglect against children. We build the capacity of frontline professionals (social workers, legal practitioners, teachers) through innovative tools and methodologies, connecting them in multidisciplinary communities of practice and coaching them in integrated approaches to child protection. We advocate for child protection and child-friendly justice, lead nationwide awareness raising campaigns, and contribute to the improvement of existing legal frameworks. We lead or participate in various national and international projects that promote and children’s rights and unlock opportunities to defend them.
