INTRODUCTION

R E A S O N E D E M OT I O N

Reasoned emotion is the intersection between rational and emotional thought. Before starting a new design, we need to find a balance point. If too rational, we can hardly think beyond our own experiences and boundaries. This is not an ideal situation for creativity as oftentimes we need breakthroughs. However, if we are too emotional, we may get lost and forget our original purpose.

unexpected inspiration, insisted efforts, bordered imagination and organized life, all of these are not only the projects I completed but also the reasoned emotions reflected in the designs. It is a long trip ahead for being a greater designer, and I am keeping going beyond myself day after day.

In most cases, memories are fragmented and not fully appeared when recalled. To keep these valuable fragments, I use my designs to document and describe them. Memories are the key not to the past but to the future, and these fragments make me who I am now.

01

Fragmented Memories OBJECTIVE

This project is about using numbers that are related to a certain subject as headlines to design a book. Evoking different pieces of my memories, the sweetest one about my hometown Inner Mongolia was chosen as the subject. The major challenge of this

her miraculous landscapes and abundant natural resources. Based on these facts, I used relevant numbers to tell stories that best represent the characteristics of Inner Mongolia. As the main design elements, numbers were scaled differently and their typefaces were also specially designed. Such uniqueness made each spread more attractive to the audience than a plain layout.

We all conduct experiments in our lives and often hard to know which one can lead to a better result. The truly unrestricted experiments could provide a much more open environment to find the most appropriate approach. All of my works here are done after such unrestricted experiments.

02

Unrestricted Experiments OBJECTIVE

This project is about conducting unrestricted experiments on type to describe the theme of a color. Pick a color theme first, then find its different meanings, and finally express the meaning just with type itself. The type is formed in a unique point of view, and

a worldwide famous band is also called Blue Band; some food has a blue color... I started the experiment by finding blue materials that appeared in my life, such as candies, blue liquid, jeans, blue paper, and so on. I then tried thousands of experiments like distorting, assembling and re-constructing different blue materials to express the themes. This is an exciting experience with unrestricted tools and ideas to experiment with type. I never thought that type could be created in so many unusual forms. Such an experimental method is definitely worthy of being used again and again in my future designs.

Inspiration to a designer is like water to a fish, and I am always eager to have more and more. My inspiration is usually gained from researching and brainstorming new ideas, and analyzing others’ works. Inspiration in fact exists everywhere, however, it’s hard to predict where we can find it. At some unexpected moment, we may encounter good inspiration by accident.

Clash”. The background of my design was made by distorting and adding wave effects on the image of architecture whose exterior is brushed with straight lines. Bright pink and blue colors are used because of their attractiveness and novelty to the conference attendees. For the text, I broke the headline apart, which created a more discordant feeling to the audiences. The background image was also adjusted in the same way as the headline, which not only made design look more consistent but also added negative spaces. Different icons were used to represent people from different areas gathered at this conference.

Using knowledge alone, in most cases, is not enough to have breakthroughs. Sometimes imagination is needed to light up the darkness of the unknown future, which usually can lead us to an unexpected but great place. However, for a designer, imagination cannot be unrestricted, but, most reasonably, it should be fact-based and bordered. This is another reasoned emotion.

ORGANIZED LIFE _ GOOD MEMORY

Whatever we do, we should make a plan about it because well begun is half done. Just like setting up grids to designers, it is always the first step and the basis for a well-organized work. Design is to make communication easier, and organizing is to make such a design possible.

06

Organized Life OBJECTIVE

Think of a good and novel concept, and then design an App to realize it. SOLUTION

We all from time to time have the annoying experience of forgetting or losing stuffs. To eliminate such towards an easy and organized life with an App was come out and named as “Good Memory”. This App has three functions, namely Reminder, Memories and Tracking. In the Reminder mode, users

can talk to their phones and tell them what should be reminded at a later time. The App memorizes it and alarms to remind you the activity when it’s the time. Users can also recall and find the stuffs that are put away long time ago in the Memories mode. It’s like a virtual container that stores all the location information of the important items you want the App to remember. Users can also use this App to track and store the locations they visited during the day in the Tracking mode. In the case of losing something, users can trace back the trajectories and then search for the missing items alone the path.

Special thanks to Mary Scott, who patiently directed and pushed me to create this portfolio and offered me the kindest understanding and help when I was sick. To Hunter Wimmer, John Nettleton, David Hake, Lian Ng and Carolina De Bartolo, thank you all for the professional advice and constant encouragement. I am deeply grateful for having the opportunity to learn not only design skills but also all the qualities that a good designer should have at AAU. FRIENDS

To my beloved boyfriend, Yu Kang, thank you for accompanying me through all the tough and good days and always experiencing my failures and successes together. I would also love to thank my dear friends, Yue Xu and Rongke Wang, who constantly gave me encouragements that built my confidence and the most helpful critiques that improved my designs. I’m so lucky to have you at the Academy of Art.
