The name Asotin is derived from a Nez Perce language term meaning eel creek. In the 1850s, an Indian reservation was established in the area that would become Asotin County, officially chartered in 1883. Later in the 1860s, the reservation was moved to Idaho. Settlers came to the area in the late 1870s. The town of Asotin was established in 1880 and named the county seat in 1883. In the 1890s, agriculture grew rapidly in the area, primarily with wheat, barley, plum, apple, and peach orchards.
