RECREATION fishing Dry Creek Canyon Ranch boasts access to almost a mile of the recently restored Dry Creek, an angler’s paradise, and one of Bozeman’s best kept fly fishing secrets. The recently completed stream restoration on Dry Creek accomplished two major goals: improved the instream riparian habitat that had been degraded over the years and reconnecting the tributary to the East Gallatin during low-flow periods in the summer and fall. Together, this improved the connectivity of the entire fishery, benefiting the entire watershed as far downstream as the Missouri River. Dry Creek is now a fully connected tributary of the East Gallatin River and fabled Missouri River. Historically, Dry Creek ran dry downstream from the Reserve during the summer and fall months due to irrigation practices. Reconnecting the waterway now gives larger migratory trout the ability to move up from the East Gallatin and Missouri Rivers to spawn in this cold-water tributary. Colder, cleaner water flow out of Dry Creek, and the right size gravel allow trout to now leave eggs behind. The consistent cold spring water combined with healthy streamside vegetation provides excellent fishing for rainbow and brown trout. Dry Creek by nature is a classic riffle, run, pool small stream fishery that holds healthy populations of trout with some fish reaching up to 6 pounds, while the average fish is around 12-16 inches. Throughout the year there are a variety of hatches and terrestrials which provide for excellent “top water” action. In fall and spring there are hatches of blue wing olives. Thick at times, caddis are present from April through October. In the mornings during August and September there is a trico hatch. Because of the meandering nature of the creek and the overhanging grass and willow banks, hopper fishing in July, August and September can be tremendous.

The property is not far from a variety of recreational pursuits. The closest off-site fishing access is on the East Gallatin River, 10± minutes away. The West Gallatin River is located 20± minutes away. In addition to the Gallatin Rivers, the Madison, Jefferson, and Yellowstone Rivers are located 45 to 60 minutes of the property. These legendary rivers are arguably the most famous fly fishing rivers in the world due to their scenic beauty and incredible number and size of wild trout. The Madison, Yellowstone, and Gallatin Rivers are known for their dry fly fishing. From blue-wing olives and midges in the spring, the salmon fly hatch in June, mayflies, caddis, hoppers, and terrestrials in the summer and back to blue-wing olives and midges in the fall and winter, the time is always right for fishing this area. Throw in some of the best streamer fishing in the state, as well as great nymph fishing year-round, and you have a variety of rivers that can provide a lifetime of entertainment for beginners to seasoned veterans. Fish in these rivers can exceed 24”. Other rivers within 1.5 hours from the property that offer world-class trout fishing are the Ruby, Big Hole, Missouri, and the Beaverhead. Several internationally famed “fee” spring creek fisheries are also close at hand. An hour or so over the hill in the Paradise Valley along the Yellowstone River, Depuy, Armstrong, and Nelson Spring Creeks attract avid anglers. Fishing conditions on these creeks are wonderful, even through winter. These spring creeks are natural wonders emerging from the ground with a large volume of nutrient rich water and an enormous amount of aquatic life, including an abundance of wild trout. Additionally, there are several tributaries, spring creeks, and mountain lakes in the area. Of course, at times the lure of traveling farther may beckon a curious angler. One to two hours of travel time will put you into the Henry’s Fork watershed in Idaho or into the center of Yellowstone National Park. The Park is the birthplace of many of the finest trout rivers in the West. Headwater streams such as the Gibbon, Firehole, and Lamar create rivers such as the Madison and Gallatin within its boundaries.
