The Henry Ranch has a wonderful variety of wildlife and plenty of room in the many breaks and drainages. Located in hunting unit 10A, the ranch supports exceptional populations of elk, whitetail deer, turkey, black bear, the occasional moose, and various other species. The central Idaho area has amazing wildlife, especially in the transition zone of productive farm ground and thick timbered forests. It is a simple fact that with good habitat, you will be able to sustain and attract good populations of game animals. This ranch has that and more.
The Clearwater region has the largest concentration of birds in the state and some of the best hunting. The ranch offers excellent turkey hunting on the open ridges and timbered drainages.
Big game hunting starts with an archery season on August 30 and runs for a month. Other hunts run from October 10 through the first part of November, and tags are first come, first served for elk. Whitetail deer seasons run concurrent with the similar archery season, start again for rifle in October, and run through most of November.
Rivers in the area, including the North Fork of the Clearwater, the main Clearwater River, the Lochsa River, and the Selway River, offer a wonderful variety of species, such as salmon, steelhead, and trout. The Dworshak Reservoir, with a length of over 50± miles, is located north of the ranch and offers a variety of exceptional bass and trout fishing. The North Fork of the Clearwater, the main Clearwater River, Lochsa River, and Selway River have a reputation of being some of the last wild rivers in the lower 48, with fantastic recreation value.
The white-water rafting is second to none, with the Lochsa and Selway Rivers just east of the Middle Fork of the Clearwater. The mountains stretch away from the back deck of the main house, beckoning one to venture into the miles of timbered hills and small streams.
The ranch currently leases out grazing for up to 300 pairs. This number does not hurt the wildlife a bit, and if anything, it helps with the supplemental feeding that takes place and attracts wildlife at the same time.
The timber is in excellent shape and has a variety of species. The last timber cruise occurred in 2014 and had just under 5,000 net MBF.
Trappers initially settled the town; soon after that, gold was discovered in the area, creating a boom town. The Clearwater Country was the first area in Idaho where gold was discovered, and fortunes sought.
