AREA HISTORY Okanogan County, often called The Okanogan, is home to 38,400 people, including members of the Colville Confederated Tribes on the Colville Indian Reservation. The area was one of the last in Washington settled by non-Indians because of its remoteness, but it was an early thoroughfare for prospectors en- route to gold fields in British Columbia. In the twenty-first century, the county earns its living from agriculture and forestry, with tourism offering additional opportunities. Grand Coulee Dam, the largest producer of electricity in the U.S., sits astride the Columbia River at the county’s southern boundary. For at least several hundred years prior to contact with Europeans, the indigenous peoples of The Okanogan consisted of three major bands of a group called the Northern Okanogans or Sinkaietk, the Tokoratums, the Kartars, and the Konkonelps. They spoke as many as seven dialects of the Interior Salishan or Interior Salish language related to the languages of Puget Sound tribes but very different from the other languages of the Columbia Basin. 4

RECREATION Tucked in a lush river valley in the Okanogan region, the Sinlahekin Wildlife Area provides the opportunity to wander at will through a rich ecosystem harboring hundreds of big game species, waterfowl, and native plants. The Sinlahekin Valley parallels Highway 97, about 10 miles to its west, leading north to the Canadian border. The 14,000± acre DNR Sinlahekin Wildlife Preserve is maintained to provide winter grounds to support deer and ground bird populations for the eastern Cascades and other nearby areas. It is a beautiful preserve, inviting walking and the opportunity to see games and waterfowl as well as native flora. Just 2.5 miles south of Loomis, the preserve straddles the Sinlahekin Creek and the Coulee Creek watersheds. O ther R ecreation Looking at the bigger picture when it comes to winter in Okanogan County, there are more than 400 miles of groomed trails scattered all over the area, all accessed by ten different Sno-Parks. Just looking at that Sno-Park information shows how varied the riding is around the county. Trail systems range from 134 miles of groomed paths to as few as 33-mile systems, and elevations range from 2,050 feet (Boulder Creek Sno-Park north of Winthrop) to 4,500 feet (Crawfish Sno-Park, located east of Riverside in the eastern part of the county). Most of the Sno-Parks are in the 2,000-foot plus elevation range. All that doesn’t even include two additional Sno-Parks in the southwest part of Okanogan County, where there are another 100 miles of groomed trails, part of which spill over into Chelan County. So there’s no shortage of groomed trails or access to them. www.fayranches.com | (800) 238.8616 | info@fayranches.com

NEARBY ATTRACTIONS & ACTIVITIES Nighthawk, located in Okanogan County, WA, is one of the oldest mining districts when Washington was still a territory with claims dating to the 1860s. By 1903 Nighthawk was a well-established boom town with a hotel, railroad depot, and saloon. The town was officially platted in 1903 by the Nighthawk Realty Co. and named for the Nighthawk Mine. By 1865 it was said 3,000 miners were living in a tent boom town. The big producing mines in the Nighthawk District were the Nighthawk, Kaaba, Ruby Silver, Chopaka, Four Metals, to name a few. The most famous of these was the Ruby Silver Mine. At one time, six concentration mills were operating in the Nighthawk area. As with other boom towns in Washington, the mines began to shut down due to operating costs and drops in metal values. The last mine to close in Nighthawk was the Kaaba Texas mine which operated from 1915 to 1951. The Kaaba Texas remained one of Nighthawk’s best-preserved mines until its remediation removal in 1999. Many of the original structures that still stand in Nighthawk today date to 1903.

INCOME | RETURN OPPORTUNITY The property has been leased for both cattle grazing in the summer months and hunting in the fall and winter.
