AREA HISTORY
Steamboat Springs, located in northwestern Colorado, has a rich history dating back to its original Ute Indian inhabitants, who called the area home for centuries due to its plentiful natural resources and hot springs. In 1874, fur trappers and explorers passing through the Yampa Valley named the town after a hot spring that sounded like a steamboat engine.

The town gained fame for its excellent skiing conditions thanks to Carl Howelsen, a Norwegian immigrant who introduced ski jumping and helped establish the town’s first ski club in 1913. Howelsen Hill, named in his honor, remains one of the oldest operating ski areas in the United States.
