AREA HISTORY

Steamboat Springs, located in northwestern Colorado, has a rich history dating back to its original Ute Indian inhabitants, who called the area home for centuries due to its plentiful natural resources and hot springs. In 1874, fur trappers and explorers passing through the Yampa Valley named the town after a hot spring that sounded like a steamboat engine.

In 1884, James Crawford and his family became the first permanent settlers, drawn by the area’s beauty and potential for agriculture. Steamboat Springs soon developed into a ranching and mining hub, with the arrival of the railroad in 1909 significantly boosting its growth.

The town gained fame for its excellent skiing conditions thanks to Carl Howelsen, a Norwegian immigrant who introduced ski jumping and helped establish the town’s first ski club in 1913. Howelsen Hill, named in his honor, remains one of the oldest operating ski areas in the United States.

Today, Steamboat Springs is renowned for its world-class ski resort, hot springs, and vibrant cultural scene, blending its historical roots with modern amenities. The town’s legacy as a premier winter sports destination and its commitment to preserving its natural and historical heritage continue to attract visitors year-round.
