Royalla and Marellan Stats - Explanation We believe in providing as much information about our bulls as possible, which is why we have developed MR stats. We go to great length and expense to document the performance of our cattle, from birth to consumption. MR Stats are based on peer assessment, actual performance that is measured from bulls in large contemporary groups. The system is not perfect, but we believe it to be an extremely beneficial selection toll.

Gestation (Gest.): MR Stats gestations are based on AI dates and observed service dates.

MR stats are based on actual, not guesswork or assumptions.

Birth Shape Score (Birth SS): See page 47 for the MR Birth Shape Score Table. Birth Shape Score is an important indicator of the shape of a calf. The better the shape, the less chance of complications.

Weaning Weight Ratios (WW Rat.): This ratio is ratio is an expression of the individual’s Weaning Weight (gain per days since birth) as compared to their peers. In this ratio, unlike the birth ratio, all bulls from the peer group are compared together – there is no separate ratio for bulls born out of cows or out of heifers. It is important to remember that the WW Ratio is a reflection of both early growth and dam’s milking ability.

BW Ratio (BW Rat.): This ratio is an expression of a bull’s birth weight as compared to his peers. It is expressed as a % of the peer average. Ratios are based on ACTUAL BIRTH WEIGHTS, ABSOLUTELY NO GUESES. A birth weight ratio of 100% is a calf that was the average weight at birth. E.g. Lot 10 had BW ratio of 89% meaning he was 11% lighter than the average of the bull calves born from cows in Spring 2011. Bull calves out of cows are compared against all the other bull calf born out of cows in that drop. Bull calves form first calf heifers are compared against all the other bull calf born out of heifers in that drop. Lives calves is the most important trait in beef production, therefore we are diligent and determined to cull any animal that doesn’t meet our strict criteria. This is for the benefit of our herd and our client’s herds. Any birth assisted calf & its mother are automatically culled. The number of calves that we cull based on birth and shape score has significantly decreased since we started using these selection tools. We believe that BreedPlan’s system of assigning birth weight EBV’s when there is no birth weight recorded is often dangerous and is based on growth curve assumptions that are often but not always correct.

Yearling Weight Ratio (YW Rat.): This ratio is ratio is an expression of the individual’s Yearling Weight (gain per days since birth) as compared to their peers. Yearling ratios is calculated from daily gain since birth, therefore older calves and bigger born calves have no advantage. 700 Day Ratio (700D Rat.): This ratio is ratio is an expression of the individual’s 700 Day Weight (gain per days since birth) as compared to their peers. It is an indication of growth potential. Dam Udder Score (Dam U.S.): This stat is a score of the Dam’s udder at Birth (when the udder is tort). See page 47 for a definition of each score. Dam Age: Dam age shows the age the cow calved, which gives greater insight into Udder Scores. Dam age (i.e. heifer or cow) also influences BW Rat. Peer group.

Marellan Shorthorns Crossbreeding Success

HE COMBINATION of the Marellan Shorthorn and the Brahman is proving to be a great success, especially after the result from the recent Sydney RAS feedlot competition held at Wilga feedlot at Bellata earlier this year. The Steers performed exceptionally well, posting an average daily gain 22% higher than the trial average. The average profit was over $100 ahead of the trial average. After 100 days on feed these 16 and 17 month Lincoln Job with Mike MacCue old steers dressed an of Wilga Feedlot. average of 393kg. According to Mike MacCue of Wilga Feedlot the Marellan Shorthorn+Plus Brahman steers “always stood out in the pen and are the type of cattle we actively source for the feedlot.”

Where Royalla cows run â&#x20AC;Ś Like a lot of Australian breeding herds Royalla cows are principally run under challenging conditions mainly native grass, granite country. Feed quality can be particularly low in winter. To be productive and rebreed in this environment our cattle must be easy doing with the ability to put on fat in the good times. The pressure is on to perform. Royalla management challenges include monitoring selenium levels by occasional use of blood testing and liver biopsies, the periodic use of phosphorus dry licks and terrain. The terrain coupled with paddock size makes weighing and assessing newborn calves a big commitment. We assess all calves but miss finding the odd calf in time to get an accurate birthweight. We still weigh but do not submit these. This is part of the reason our shape scoring system is so important to our management. Calves are weaned onto our better country. Selecting cattle with the doability needed for this environment fits perfectly with the Royalla aim of producing premium eating beef.

The Land 2013 Feedlot Trial â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 76 teams of 5 steers: To qualify for Riverine Premium Branded Beef, Teysâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; top brand, all 5 team members had to marble 2 or more. Only 6 of 76 teams did this with a Royalla pen qualifying 3rd, the only Shorthorn pen to qualify. See graphs for compliance of Royalla blood Shorthorns compared to Angus entries for both Riverine Premium and the feedlots own profitability rating. The overall placings at the trial showed the 5 Royalla blood Shorthorn pens from Royalla and Compton Partnership, Coonamble placed 9th, 14th 16th, 19th and 22nd, all in the top 29%. On the profitability $ score, one of the Compton Partnership teams was the 2nd highest scoring team from 76 entries. Brisbane RNA 2013 Feedlot Trial: Royalla Shorthorn pen placed 9th from 69 pens of 6 nominated steers. Average daily gain of 2.58kg/ day compared to trial average of 2.32kg/day. Equal to any other exhibitorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pure Shorthorn average. Carcase results not to hand yet.

Why Marble Fleck Scoring is SO Important

T MARELLAN AND ROYALLA we believe in the long term future of the Beef Industry. Value-based payment systems will be a big part of the future. Discerning customers will continue to demand more meat quality but not ‘unsightly products’. One of the most effective ways to genetically increase meat quality in breeding stock is through Marbling, measured by IMF (Intra Muscular Fat). The problem with simple IMF% measurements is that they don’t take into account the distribution of Intra Muscular Fat. It is this evenness of fat distribution that enables us to have meat quality without unsightly and unappetising lumps of fat. That is why we are so in favour of Marble Fleck Scores – which is an appraisal of the evenness of the distribution of the IMF. The higher the score, the better the distribution. We look forward to a greater use of Marble Fleck scores and perhaps incorporation into EBV’s. We think that it is necessary and inevitable due to the profound long term increases in meat quality that can be made by further utilising this measurement tool. In the course of our carcase analysis we have killed cattle that were 50% Shorthorn and 50% another popular British breed. It was strikingly obvious that the main difference between the meat quality of these 2 sets of carcases was the more even distribution of marbling from our pure-bred Shorthorn cattle. We use this marble fleck score as a selection tool, it certainly influences the bulls we use. If as an industry we want to increase our overall market share and increase the satisfaction levels of our customers we must focus more on meat quality. Marble Royalla / Marellan Scotch Fillet Fleck Scores are one tool to help us all do that. Up to date Marble fleck scores on sale bulls will be available from Friday 23 August. MARELLAN ROYALLA UDDER SCORES (U.S.) In order to provide more relevant and helpful information for prospective clients, especially those seeking to retain replacement females, we give our cows an udder score the day they calve, at the same time as we weigh the calf. It is adjudicated on that day as the first day of a calf’s life is the most important day for a cow’s udder to function. It is a judgment on a cow’s udder size and shape, and teat size and shape. These udder scores are NOT an assessment on the milking ability of a cow. It is important to consider that the dam of each bull will only contribute 50% of the bulls ‘genetic’ udder. Udder scores are obviously relative to age, i.e. an U.S. 4 on a 10 year old cow is a much better udder than an U.S. 4 on a first calf heifer.
