GREETINGS AND WELCOME TO THE 19TH ANNUAL DURHAMS IN THE DAKOTAS
As I write this, it's a gorgeous day in Kathryn, 41 and Sunny rarely happens in December, let alone the end of the Month. It seems appropriate given the year. While challenges know no end, 2024 has been a historic year, both here and for the industry as a whole. The crew likely gets tired of me comparing it to 2014. It's fun to say 2024 has eclipsed it and hopefully 2025 does, too.
On to why we're here. What a set of Bulls. Never before has a set forced me to think harder, and, be more intentional about where and how to start it. The quality, depth, and diversity is truly unique in what's the largest Shorthorn and Shorthorn Influenced Bull Sale in the World. It's no accident. For the past 17 years we have been a member of the American Shorthorn Association's Century Club, and, for the last 4 consecutive years have registered more Shorthorn Cattle than any operation in North America. I truly believe this is a result of our relentless pursuit in developing a cow herd worthy of being stacked against the best of any breed for their ability to excel in convenience traits. The cows last and we just end up having more of them. Along those lines, nothing is more rewarding than having our customers tell us, once they get a "Shot of Shorthorn" in their cows, they can't get over how good they prove to be against their other breed counterparts. We believe it, we've had them since 1953. For the last 25 years, the goal has not been to tell people, but, show them.
Speaking of showing them. The Bulls will show themselves on the forthcoming pages. Whether you are in the market for a Promotional Sire, fleet of Half-Sib cow bulls, or, a set of Heifer bulls – 58 are heifer safe – we have them all. The Ranchers Reds. Whatever your trade, they are backed by a set of working cows I'd put up against anything, anywhere. They are durable, dependable, and don't quit, ever.
That is us. We would be honored if you would take the time from your busy schedules to be with us any time prior to, or, up to sale weekend. As always, the gates are open to the Cow Herd and Herd Sires. We would love to show you our operation, the dams of your potential future sires, and, how we run our cows. Around 6 pm Saturday night, we hope you can see what's come to be something of legend. It's where interest meets intrigue as people come back to this great Country's first breed of cattle, SHORTHORN!

These may be the 2 most Important, Calving Ease, future Cow makers we have ever raised. The prepotency of Reincarnation combined with the strongest bull producing cow family in the breed for the last 15 years. I remember joking the day 195M was born that he could have Brock's room since he was soon to head off to college. Then, a couple days later 207M came and it was bunk beds or the bunk house for future guests. I love cattle that look good from day 1 and these have done just that. People tell me their mother is the best Red Shorthorn Cow in America. McCartney 207M is my pick. Lennon 195M is Preston's. We agree on most everything...except these...and, let me tell you, we have a lot of fun with that! McCartney gets the 1 slot due to being Homo Polled and the fact I write the checks. Take your pick or find some partners and own them both. You won't be wrong. Lennon and McCartney are a pair of Consequential Shorthorn Herd Sires.

POWER OF PERFECTION...JSF MISS PERFECTION 79B!
Terms to be announced on or prior to Sale Day. Jeff Aegerter's pick of the bulls Durham Nation weekend. The best combination of power and eye appeal to ever bear the prefix. His Dam needs no introduction with regards to her ability to create future Herd Sires and powerful, donor quality females. His Sire is the one I tried to buy back last Spring while in OH. Roan, Homo Polled, with power & style to burn, all the while being outcross to the majority of mainstream cattle today, Brosnan commands the attention of the most discriminating Shorthorn breeders.
Suitable for heifers. This uniquely bred future Herd Sire found a lot of friends Durham Nation weekend, and, for good reason. He has all the depth of rib of his sire while possessing the look and presence of his immortal dam. 79B's natural calf, he didn't get to pasture til way late as she was being flushed and that likely impacted his performance. He is really coming now and I have no doubt will only continue his trajectory towards a true sale Highlight come 1-25-25. A new Regime,
The first Springsteen and he is so, so good...AJ says he's better than his sire. His picture may not show it yet, but, wait til you see this calf in person. Both Lee Miller & Cody Nelson found him Durham Nation weekend. Twin to a heifer, he is another that has only continued to get better and better. His 261D dam is an outstanding, ground sow of a cow. Maternal half sib to JSF Maritime Law 299J. Herd Sire.
The length, attractiveness, and style of his great sire, Springsteen. All from a Reincarnation dam from the Gold Rose family. If you are looking to add length and scale, this is a bull that deserves a serious look. Canadian friends, for all the semen inquiries we've had on his sire, take note here. This one is your kind.
I LOVE this bull. So rugged, huge legged, big bodied, bold statured, and, yet so sound. He is exactly what I envisioned when we flushed Zane's Long Cool Woman cow to 50K. Ask him about his siblings out in MT. This bull is a breeding piece that I would recommend to go anywhere.
Suitable for heifers. The red, stouter, more powerful brother, yet still maintains solid CE. This bull deserved very strong consideration for our red pen. He is really, really good and one that's been on my radar all his days. Take note. Red, Outcross Herd Sire here.
JSF SNOWY RIVER
Suitable for heifers. The Man from Snowy River. Can't believe it took me this long to name a White Bull this as it may have been my favorite movie as a kid. Guess everything happens for a reason and I just needed the right one. With his amazing sire now gone due to injury, and, semen in limited supply, this bull is poised to take his place. Stout bulls with eye appeal and absolute lock down calving ease don't come along every day, let alone White, and that's what makes this one special.
JSF PILLOW TALK 1M
Suitable for heifers. Another White Noise, another STUD. Long, thick, deep, and cool with a big leg and back, Pillow Talk is good enough to breed cows anywhere. Thanks for the name AJ, it's all you.
JSF WHITE NOISE 42K
FANCY NANCY 222
Suitable for heifers. Ultra soft made, dense, chubby tank of a bull here that would be fat on the moon. It comes as no surprise being a linebred Reincarnation and from the Golden Chain cow family. Power deep in the blood here.
JSF LINE ONE 46M
Suitable for heifers. Awesome, even dark roan White Noise from a great first calf Adelaide. It makes sense as I lost track of how many times I saw the name Jake's Proud Jazz 266L in his extended pedigree (COI 7.45%). If you need to lock in consistency, with ultra high quality, tied back to one of the best cow families to ever live here in the Adelaides, take a long look at this calving ease stud.
Suitable for heifers. This prick has some stick...and foot...and top... and body...Cock of the walk, too. To all my customers in OK and TX that like them just this way, here is one that should likely be on a South load come next spring. The closest in type and kind to Snowy River of the White Bull offering.

JSF MAUDE 9K
Dam’s Age: 2
Suitable for heifers. I don't even know where to start with this one...if you follow my social media, you know Royale 26M has been a star. There are so many reasons to like this one. AJ says he's the most complete bull on the sale. I love his look, structure, head, and overall soundness. He's got performance. He boasts an outcross pedigree. For not having bred him to be a freak on paper, he turned out to be just that. Top 10% for CE. Top 1% for BMI. Top 2% for CPI. Might just be dumb luck. Or, it could be that here, we breed for the right kind of cow, first. Funny how the rest takes care of itself.

JSF GENESIS 25M
Dam’s Age: 2
Suitable for heifers. Whether you did or didn't read the end of the last footnote, go back and read it again. Then, study Genesis 25M. The #1 nonparent CPI bull in the breed for 2024. #8 for $BMI. #10 for $CEZ.

Suitable for hefiers. Soft, sound, and so, so good. Another awesome 150K x Reincarnation bull. There is a reason we are going to use a whole lot more 150K next year and beyond. Here is yet another example. A favorite all of his days and one that could surely be making the trip to Denver, JSF Verify 23M.

BELLE 189C
There might be as much good in this one as any bull I've ever raised. He is a maternal half sib to the dam of Thorne 300M and last year's top seller, Namath, to Cody Hooks in KY. His maternal Half sister from last year's drop broke the Durham Nation record, going to J Thomas Livestock in TN. His dam is Jeff Aegerter's pick of our cows. He is incredible in person and on paper, especially in terms of his Carcass Traits, which the combination thereof is a tall order. He is a Future Herd Sire that I feel will leave his mark on this breed and he will see use here in 2025, Glacier 132M.
Dam’s Age: 8
Suitable for heifers. Preston's 2nd pick of the bulls behind 195M. Comes as no surprise given Jed's dam is the famed Abbey Road 5F and a full sib to Lennon & McCartney. Speaking of full sibs, a guy that does a helluva job out in OH found this guys full brother last year half way through the sale. He goes by the name Mr. Lee Miller. His prefix is PVF. He's smart. Preston says Jed's better. We'll let you decide on 1-25!
BYLAND CASH 1RO86
Suitable for heifers. Love this Bull. He has a head that reads HERD SIRE. His dam is a great cow from the Meg cow family. I have a hunch Pale Rider is a bull that will have a ton of friends in Denver and back in Kathryn.
What a stud. The highest indexing bull from the 2024 calf crop. Maternal Half sib to last year's top seller Mantle. His dam is as good and productive a Shorthorn cow as there is in the breed today. Top 1% for $BMI. Top 4% $CPI. Top 3% $F. Lastly, don't let that stripe scare ya. He's red
the ground with red testicles. The last bull I used with a stripe like that was RB Eagle 255th, the bull that put JSF on the map. Let Cashman do it for you. You won't regret it. BYLAND CASH 1RO86 JSF PRINCESS 64G ET
Suitable for heifers. Balance 259M is above breed average for every single measured trait and a literal grizzly bear in person. This bull has a monster leg, back, and foot. You'll see me talk these a bit more, but, the April bull calves are TDF. He's just one of them. See you in Kathryn 1-25.
JSF THORNE
Crews pick of the bulls and Ranch Favorite. Entered on "The Hill" Were he polled I'd all but guarantee he starts the sale. Hell, he still might. This is a great calf we can't wait to let people see. From the Bella Thorne Tribe. The #6 Non-parent bull in the breed for $BMI (Top 1%). Top 10% for $CPI. Top 2% for $F...And...he's a show bull. Proof you can, indeed, have it all. Thorne will see use here in 2025.
JSF JACK 285M 27
Stout, polled, jack necked, ripping stud. His dam has landed numerous Herd Sires around the country and she strikes yet again with 285M. If you need one to add some power and look, this bull needs to be on your list.
JSF WAR CHEST 150M
Suitable for heifers. War Chest is another Cash son that has found his way to our social channels. He's a MEATWAGON. His Reincarnation dam landed the Lot 1 heifer in her first year for Durham Nation 2024 and came right back to do this. What a beast, and, another that's above breed average for every single measured trait.
BYLAND CASH 1RO86
WISE’S SCARLET ROSE 120
If you are seeking a solid red, polled, stud of a Herd Sire, Masterclass definitely needs to be on your list. A standout stemming from a great young female from the Beckler Herd that Brock snagged a few years back on the Maternal Event.
Another awesome, deep cherry red Cash son that also happens to be Homo Polled. Dr. Jeff Byers found this guy Durham Nation weekend...and that guy knows bulls. Mercury possesses great Birth to Yearling spread and is in the Top 4% of the breed for $BMI and top 5% for $F. See him in Denver and follow him back to Kathryn!
BYLAND CASH 1RO86
WOLF
Beasty Boy, and, aptly named, the Red Wolf. His dam is responsible for so many good cattle, and, she answered the call yet again in 2024. Ethan Gilman told me Durham Nation weekend he maybe wasn't the best one yet, but, he would be later. I won't agrue. If you need a Red Bull with power that can still leave an awesome set of females behind, Red Wolf is your man. Top 2% for $BMI. Top 4% $F.
CARGO'S CASH 292M
Another in the April pen of bulls that is sure to impress. This calf of Preston's is thick made, deep bodied, stout, and choke necked. Just like you'd expect one of his to be! Let him go to work for you!
BYLAND CASH 1RO86
CARGOS SWEET CABERNET 72J
JSF MILLERSBURG
When Millersburg 205M came into the picture pen, Logan Hoffman said "WOW". The bull has that factor and is an absolute CHUNK. A Pair of Powerful Cash Twin Brothers here in 88M and 89M. Either could have made the Denver pens, especially since they hit the yard this fall. From the Miss Favorite cow family, one that has been responsible for so many great bulls and females here over the years.
38, 39, 40 Suitable for heifers. Next, find 3 heifer safe options of varying colors, from some of the best cow families on the place. 65M reads sure fire heifer bull and has a great disposition. Lot 38, 273M is another of the great April calves here and boasts extra growth to go with awesome BEPD, CED, and a set of Top 10 Indexes, which, come as no suprise given his dam is a full sib to the likes of breed greats WallStreet and Times Square. Red Max 116M, a solid Red Cash son with tremendous growth to Yearling spread. Last, but certainly not least, 297M is long, thick, deep and a maternal half sib to a couple 5 figure Heifer Calves and Herd Sires. Don't miss him. Oustanding Dam and loads of quality in this April calf. BYLAND CASH 1RO86 JSF GOLDEN CHAIN 104E
Another bull I absolutely love. These Durango sons are so, so good and he's as good a one as we've made yet in terms of performance and look. Perfect, dark SHORTHORN roan to boot, invest in your next Herd Sire, Maudern Man 275M.
JSF BRECKENRIDGE 298M 43
DEERHORN DURANGO 903G
Pictured with Breckenridge 298M the day after turnout last Spring.
Suitable for heifers. Another people have been hearing about and seeing for awhile now. Breckinridge is a full sib to the Telluride bull that recently topped Durham Nation, headed to the Six family in PA. They know good ones and are doing some great things out there for the breed. This is another that belongs in the hands of the most discriminating. Top 10% for $CEZ, $BMI, and $CPI all the while being so eye appealing and all around good. Herd Sire here.

Sire of Lots 42 - 44
DEERHORN DURANGO 903G
45 Suitable for heifers. The Durham Red Program is alive and well in Kathryn, ND, courtesy of some amazing Red Angus cows that Preston brought with him when he came here. Just study these bulls and you have to appreciate what the cattle are, and, can do. I have loved these bulls all their days and it's also why I'm so excited to get more Father Time calves. Mark my words, in 2026, people will be fighting over his set of sons. Fight over these 2 Studs for now. They are worth it.
JSF EMPIRE 21M 47
JSF MANHATTAN
JSF ROCKEFELLER 9M 49
JSF VANDERBILT 12M 48
JSF GRAND CENTRAL 23M
Suitable for heifers. Another incredibly eye appealing White Bull, this one with calving ease to burn, and, stemming from the Princess cow family. This bulls dam is can't miss. That's important. So is he, Prince William 172M.
JSF WHITE LAKE 163M
Stout. Soggy. Stud. He is the Cowboy Kind. Homo Polled, Dark Pigment, from a tremendous cow. We may collect a little semen on this guy before he heads to his new home. I am that confident in the good this one has to offer.
Another of the Top Flight April bull calves this year. If you are thinking about a show bull to campaign as your Herd Sire, this guy has merit. He is so sound, proportional, huge nutted, and just flat good. His dam was Daryl and Jeff's pick for me up at Shadybrook a couple years back. Her first calf, a half brother by Foreplay, was selected by Blane Osterday on Durham Nation last fall. That guy is smart and knows cattle. Comes by it naturally. Lastly, know this--There has been as many conversations about this one since he was clipped as any bull on the place.
JSF BLUEPRINT 85M 55
JSF MAPLETON 180M 56
55 Suitable for heifers. Mapleton and Blueprint are another pair of highly attractive, heavy muscled, JW sons from great cows. Each had consideration for our Denver pens due to their power and look. Both stem from not just great cows, but great cow families, steeped in generations of commercially focused, industry driven cattle. Find both sale day, you'll thank me later.
JSF BACKROAD
JSF ROAN ROCK 161M
JSF JENSEN 162M
58, 60 Suitable for heifers. Bangin set of performance bulls with eye appeal here. The JW heifers were the highlight of Durham Nation and if you were there or watched, you know why. The eye appeal they possess, coupled with functional traits, is something that is very hard to find. If you need to bring some look back to your cattle, without sacrifcing convenience traits, these bulls will work as well as anything on offer.
ROUGHNECK
JSF ORR 206M
JSF TEXAS TEA
62 Suitable for heifers. 112M is a bull that has so much good. From a beautiful 2nd calf Times Square x Maude. He should be on your list for a roan, quiet, no fail kinda bull. Orr 206M stems from the All Sevens cow family and is another bull we debated taking to Denver. Soft made and heifer safe, he will be a bull everyone finds. Lastly, and certainly not least, I know people are going to find Texas Tea 186M. Cow bull only, but, HOLY. His dam is one of the best cows on the place and is a Dark Roan House, likely why he came a bit bigger. What I do know for sure, he is phenotypically as good as any bull selling in Kathryn on 1-25-25.
ABOUT BULLS the
The Bulls are raised along the Banks of the Sheyenne & James River Valley systems in ND. These bulls all grow up having to travel for water, forage, and shade. Only the top cut is retained for bulls with serious consideration given to acceptable birth weights, conformation, and overall durability. Once weaned, they are fed for optimum, not maximum gain, in large pens with free choice hay, gradually worked up to a 52mCal ration. This allows the bulls to express their differences genetically without being overly fat. Once yearling weights and scan data is recorded, the bulls are gradually backed down to a 42mCal ration prior to turnout and/or delivery, post a breeding soundness exam by Tom Becker.
Suitable for heifers. Unique beast. Latitude comes center with shot of Argentine & Canadian genetics, blended between 2 of the top cow families from JSF, and made in Kathryn, ND, USA. Name cred goes to the guy from Stuart, IA with initials E.G. Putting it out there cuz I know he's never gonna give me a name suggestion ever again.
JSF MORRIS 408M
65, 67, 68 Suitable for heifers. There is so much good in these Mendoza's and it makes sense. The Argentine influence continues to be sought after for the good it brings...calving ease, moderation, doability. I love 65 and you should too. Long, thick, and DEEP. 66 has a great deal of look, coupled with the body and balance of the Mendoza's. 67 & 68 are a pair of Solid Red, Soggy, calving ease ShorthornPlus bulls that belong in a heifer project somewhere for years to come. Take note, the industry has a pile that need bred in the coming years. OWNED WITH BRUNS CATTLE
70, 71 Suitable for heifers. 70 is stout, soggy, beast of bull that remains heifer safe. His dam has done a great job at Pearl Valley and goes back to the immortal Proud Jazz. 71 is a sure fire, clean made, sleep all night heifer safe option.

Dam’s Age: 4
76-79 Suitable for heifers. This is the strongest page of multiple pictured bulls this late in a JSF Catalog, ever. 57M is a good looking, high powered, Red Bull that will add performance. 217M is so neat made and the only Purebred Joe Cool on the Sale. Timeless 8M is good enough I considered keeping him. 63M was in the talks for the Denver pen. Tremendous quality, stoutness, and power here with 3 still being heifer safe. It's us and it's what we do. #JSF.
This one grows on me more and more all the time, and, I think, is the best all-around bull Kane sent up this year. Balanced, sound, heavy structured, yet still sound. I think he does a lot of things, right, all from a highly proven, great SBR dam.
Big time power bull here from the famed Lady Reward cow family. The Josey Wales bull has done an amazing job back on the Red Reward bred cattle. Add in a shot of Flash and this is one stud hombre. See him "On The Hill" in Denver.

The first Payweight to sell through here and he's a beast. Fun fact, Brock and I made a side trip to Modoc back in December of 2021, specifically to look at that bull. We round out the Black and Blue division with 3 incredibly high quality individuals. First 40M of Haley's stems from a great Spickler cow that has done a fantastic job, zeroing in on a decade of production. 214M is loud and proud! If you want to add a little pizazz and color, to a set of calves, here's your bull. Last, but certainly not least, 294M is a white one we just couldn't not keep. So much peformance, from a great Blue cow, he'll make blues once mated to Black cows and leave you a set of big heavy steers and awesome Blue roan replacements.

The bulls on the following pages began as a conversation, now, over 11 years ago, with a lifelong Simmental breeder from just outside Lisbon, ND by the name of Jerry Hieggelke. I had appreciated his cattle, and, as it often goes around the Sandhills in SE ND, many cattlemen's herds are heavy with Simmental x Angus influence. I'd heard several of our mutual customers speak well of his bulls. They talked of how they held up without excessive supplement, bred cows, and, most importantly, lasted. They all said "lasted" and my wheels were turning. I had passed that on to him one day and said I'd love to come have a look at his Red Cows sometime. Wheels still turning, I talked to Marty Ropp and told him to be on the lookout for a good Simmi x RA donor. That fall, he called and told me he'd found one, TNT Miss W7 came to Kathryn and we flushed her Shorthorn. The Miss Me's you see today all trace back to her. Back to Jerry—a year went by and then one day, after having gone through some health troubles, he stopped and asked if I'd like to come have a look at the cows. I didn't hesitate. I'm glad I went as we made a deal that day for all of his red cows. The next step, mate them to our Durham Red Bull, SBR Goldenrod 714. Goldenrod 714 was an incredible beast. Sired by the Select Sires bull JSF Goldenrod 57U (another son of the immortal KL Gold Rose 451) and, out of an awesome Buffalo Creek Cherokee Canyon daughter, back to Rick Osterday's Suzy Cow family, which, at the time, may have been the best cow walking in Java. I had the best of ranch country, Shorthorn and Red Angus, ready to wrap back on a set of Simmi's.
Fast forward several years to where we now—have some over 50 Goldenrod 714 daughters in production, most all going back to the Hieggelke cows or W7, now a high % Shorthorn. They are so functional and I believe as good a set of Red Cows as you will find anywhere, regardless of breed composition. The next step, find the right PB Simmental Bulls to mate them to, enhancing growth, without sacrificing what our cattle do well in terms of softness, soundness, and maternal superiority. I leaned on people I trusted and got the tip to AI to IR Imperial. Good move #1. Next, I bet I watched 1000 Simmental bull videos in the spring of 2023, talked to more people I trusted, and, landed on a bull from Rydeen's in MN that I thought could work. Others must have thought so as well because a couple other breeders in ND & IA made me pay 27K that day that to own RFS Kaiser K104.
The rest, as they say, is History. The first set of sons from a breed being created just South of Kathryn, ND are here. And a breed it will be. We have already begun the next steps of using a ½ Shorthorn ¼ Red Angus, ¼ Simmental bull back on higher % Simmental females, with the plan of establishing a solid red beast that is approximately ½ Simmental 3/8 Shorthorn 1/8 Red Angus. No one else has them. They are incredibly good. They will fit a variety of environments. They are Ranchers Reds and they are poised to make Beef Cattle, better. Trademark Pending.
****ALL BULLS ARE DUAL REGISTERED SHORTHORNPLUS AND % SIMMENTAL.

Had to start here. Incredible calf. Suitable for heifers, with body, impeccable structure, and eye appeal to burn. See him and a couple of his brothers on display on Herd Sire Alley and in the ShorthornPlus and Simmental Pen Show.
JSF RANCHERS’ RED 11M
I love this one and have all his days. Scale crushing performance, yet with deep jaw, wide back, big foot, and sound structure. Oh, and his maternal Granddam, just might be the best cow on the whole place. She's a purebred Shorthorn, goes by the name Adelaide 83B. You likely saw that a few times by now. Proof, that everything is better with a Shot of Shorthorn.
JSF RANCHERS’ RED
He is young but he may be the best one in the end, if he isn't already. Complete stud and worth every drop of gas for the drive to Kathryn, 315M.

Suitable for heifers. This bull's dam is one of the best Beef cows in Kathryn and it should come as no surprise with that shot of Ember in there. She has sent bulls to KS and points in between. Helluva bull.
