Welcome

The Common Cents bull sale On behalf of JDMC Cattle Company and Circle S Cattle Company it is an honor to have you taking time out of your busy schedule to analyze our 3rd Annual Common Cents Bull Sale Catalog. It has been a long year for many in the cattle business from the never ending winter last year to the one that started way too early and hard for many cattlemen this fall. If you were affected at all by the blizzard better known by Atlas you are in our thoughts and prayers. Through this trying time in the cattle industry we have been able to increase our sales and customers and are overwhelmed by the repeat business we have been receiving. In the past we have quoted some of our customers in the catalog but this year’s verbal support has been unbelievable. We truly appreciate all the support we have received. Unlike many in the purebred cattle business we have tried to set ourselves apart. We try to make our cows do more with less. We feel that as a seedstock producer we should run our cowherd tougher than any of our customers and provide you with a product that you can take home and have them continue to move in the right direction. If you are looking to buy a fat bull that has been fit to a tee don’t bother looking through this catalog. These bulls have been fed a high roughage, high fiber diet and are not corn fat. We develop these bulls with you in mind. They have not had issues passing a semen test in the past and we do not receive those awful phone calls in mid-summer with dissatisfied customers. Instead we continue to hear how well the bulls did while breeding cows and can’t believe how few open cows they have come fall. Once again we will be offering some bred females and new this year we will be offering some open heifers calves that will be sure to impress. We look forward to seeing you January 25 and if you can’t make it feel free to contact any of us or our sale staff as we will continue with our 100% sight unseen guarantee. Also, videos will be available on our website www.shorthornbulls.com by January 15. Sincerely, JDMC Cattle Co & Circle S

This bull starts off what will be the last offering of Red Ranger, which makes it easy to start the sale off with them. We were fortunate enough to find Red Ranger breeding commercial cows but we were only lucky enough to use him for one year. These sons will make him a legend in the Shorthorn breed for sure. Here is an absolute awesome Red Ranger out of a Dover daughter that is sure to move your herd to the next level. Thunderstruck is a bull that is impossible to pick apart. If you look at cattle from the ground up he is impeccable from his feet to his head... He has screamed HERD SIRE since the day he was born. Buy with complete confidence.

Not just another bull here. He stems from the great Lady Cow family that Deerhorn Farms has procured and his dam is a cow that anyone would be proud to put in their front pasture. Not only does she look the part but she never, ever misses. Year in and year out she puts a calf at the top of the group, bull or heifer. Last year she sent a bull that was admired by many to Kansas and we cannot wait to see where this one ends up. This is her best yet.

A Red Ranger X Bonaza… By now I shouldn’t need to say more but I will. His dam is another standout Bonanza daughter out of our Polly cow family. He is one of the younger bulls in the sale but don’t let that fool you, he is flat good. Look him up on sale day. He would be worth taking a chance on for sure.

Grassmaster… His name fits him well. Not only is he bred to work in an extremely low input herd, but looks the part to do it. This bull is an absolute tank! He is the kind of bull that you build a herd around. He is out of maybe our best Bonanza daughter and she is out of one of our top Marquis daughters. If you are looking for consistency look no further. Grassmaster is extremely line bred as he is the result of a 3/4 Sister brother mating. These are the kind of bulls that are true changers. If you are looking to be profitable for years to come look no further... his daughters will take you to first class.

Here is a son of Christian’s favorite cow 7933 that he bought from Herm Meyer and is a powerhouse of a cow. If Stockman makes cows half as good as his dam (which we expect he will) you will be a very happy cattle person.

This purebred bull out of our donor we call Jazzy has continued to impress the older he gets. I truly believe his best days are ahead of him. This cow family is the anchor of our Shorthorn herd and combines structure, udder quality, durability, fleshing ability, and performance. Low birth weight and above average growth give you lots of options on how to use this bull. When you sort your calf crop to find your replacement heifers you will soon find that he sired many in your keeper pen.

Remedy is making his mark. He has been seeing more use nationwide as the word has been spreading on how good his progeny have been. This one is no exception. He is also out of the great Lady cow family of Deerhorns and his dam in a beast of a cow. I think she could stay fat on a rock pile and this bull has the same appearance. A Big Sky son out of a Top Hand daughter that is one impressive cow. Here is a bull to add some length of body while not losing any dimension.

Here is a little old school stuff. We were actually putting embryos in a couple years ago and finally got a chance to throw in a few of these embryos. Samantha Schoenbauer will be campaigning his full sister. If you are looking for an extra stout bull to add some muscle and bone here he is. One can only imagine the set of blue roans you could get turning him in with some of those deep bodied soggy black cows.

A maternal brother to Grassmaster… Another bull we feel is named appropriately, he is going to make life easier for a long time from calving ease to fleshing ability. He does it all and being out of 12X just makes things that much better. He is another cow maker and is the caliber to headline the sale. He should be one of the most looked at bulls all year as he just does it all. He is also line bred Marquis with a dash of Bonanza. These are ingredients for success.

This could be the best we have ever raised. When Luke Bowman told us to use Classic unfortunately we just dabbled with it… it worked. This guy is a stud. Packed full of power but still moves like a cat. He is as good as they come. This is why you need to use Shorthorn bulls on your black cows. That cross isn’t just OK, it’s the best.

Jazzy’s natural calf out of our Simmi bull we call Beef Maker. The Shorthorn X Simmental cross, or “Shims” as we like to call them, combine the maternal characteristics of both breeds with the addition of the performance from the Simmental. Just an April calf, All American was named Champion Shorthorn Plus bull at the MN State Fair. His muscle shape and rib shape make him a truly 3 dimensional bull. The structural soundness and fleshing ability he possess will only add to the durability bred into this sire.

This year we will be offering a select group of open heifer calves from Dave Skogelund in South Dakota. He will be bringing a load of Shorthorn influenced heifer calves that were born in April of 2013. They have all been pelvic measured and Bangs vaccinated. Many of these are sired by some of the Shorthorn and Shorthorn Plus bulls that he has purchased from us in the past. Dave has culled his herd ruthlessly and these will be gate cut from his keeper replacement pen. We are very excited about this consignment. We will offer these females in groups of different sizes that will be announced on sale day.

There will also be a small group of Shorthorn influenced bred females offered. They will sell individually watch for more details and pictures on the website leading up to the sale.

$ Value Definitions

This catalog was the first in the Shorthorn breed to list dollar value traits. These dollar values are designed to assist you in your purchasing decision. Below is an explanation of each dollar value trait and its significance to your operation. We are also providing to you the breed average for each trait as well as the average of the bulls in this sale. If you have any questions on these values please feel free to give us a call to discuss.

$ CEZ – ($ Calving Ease) This index assumes a bull will only be mated to heifers, not cows. The potential profitability of the sire is measured by the incidence of live calves at birth. Moderate mature size is also emphasized in the index, but performance is not a priority. This index is also a good measure of Shorthorn females’ ability to produce calving ease sires. Overemphasis of $CEZ may cause unwanted depression of weaning and yearling performance. $F – ($ Feedlot) Similar to a Terminal Sire scenario, $Feedlot places strong emphasis on growth and carcass traits. This multi-trait index assumes the sire will be mated to a mix of heifers and cows and attempts to measure profitability when progeny are sold on the fed market. On the female side, mature size should be monitored closely when selecting for $F. Over-selection may cause detrimental harm to longevity, reproductive efficiency, and fleshing ability. $BMI – ($ British Maternal Index) As the name implies, this multi-trait selection index attempts to measure a bull’s potential profitability when complimenting the British cow base (Angus, Red Angus, Hereford, etc.). Shorthorn females can likewise be gauged at adding value to British or British-composite bulls of other breeds. A balance of growth and carcass traits is desired with a strong maternal component aimed at optimum reproductive efficiency and cow longevity.
