Reading the Data The Santa Gertrudis Breeders International genetic evaluation is one of the most comprehensive among the Bos indicus breeds. The evaluation system, developed for the association by Livestock Genetic Services, has been reviewed by the nation’s leading animal geneticists and utilizes genotypes collected from the breed’s leading sires and validated on 10K, 20K, and 50K SNP Chips. Thousands of ranch phenotypes and scan records collected over a 25 year period serve as the foundation of the genetic evaluation. SGBI’s reliable genetic evaluation ensures that cattlemen can make sound selection decisions, identifying those animals that will perform in the most challenging of environmental conditions. SGBI Expected Progeny Differences:

Expected Progeny Differences, EPDs, are the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the SGBI database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure (plus or minus) for each trait being evaluated and are calculated utilizing pedigree and performance information. In 2014 Santa Gertrudis Breeders International released the first genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (DNA verified) for Bos indicus influenced cattle. The inclusion of DNA into the breed’s EPD calculations (GE-EPDs) result in information that is more accurate and predicable than a pedigree and performance prediction alone. SGBI is a leader in the adoption and implementation of genetic technology and the association’s database contains over 4,000 DNA samples genotyped with the GeneSeek Genomic Profiler.

Open donor. 1A: Bull calf, DOB 1/23/2015 • KR 865/08 was identified as the highest Marbling EPD (.2) active King Ranch cow in the SGBI database, however was selected due to her productivity. • 865/08 belongs to Herd 1A where her dam (KR 615/02) is still active along with 2 daughters and 2 maternal sisters. • KR 865/08 calved last year on 3/2/14 with this year’s bull calf born on 1/23/15 (10 days before the sale catalog video and picture). • Potential sires of the bull calf at side: KR 97/10, KR 613/10, KR 781/13, and KR 143/13. Consignor SGBI Growth Index: The growth index puts together weaning weight and yearling weight. Since WW is contained in YW, post wean gain (PWG) is used in the index to prevent double counting WW. As an example of the index, if an animal has a +30 growth index, their offspring will be on average worth $30 more as yearling than the breed average, based strictly on weight. SGBI Carcass Rank Index: The carcass rank index contains marbling score, hot carcass weight, ribeye area, backfat, and tenderness and is weighted by the economics of carcass values. It is expressed as a numerical ranking within the breed from 1 -10 with 10 being the highest. For example, an animal with a score of 9 would be in the 80th percentile or would be better than 80% of the population in carcass composition. A ranking of 6 would place the animal in the 50th percentile.v

EPD Percentile Ranking Chart Due to additional data becoming available for the low acurracy carcass traits, the ranges of these traits have been adjusted to align with the breed’s higher accuracy growth traits and provide a truer industry picture. While this impacts an animal’s actual carcass EPDs, it does not impact ranking within the breed. Following adjustment and with the additional data, ranks remain above a 98% correlation as compared to the August 2014 download. January 2016 EPD Run Percentile

Red Doc Governess 5027 is sired by the bull who the legendary Cherokee Ranch was built around. The Governor 9440, produced by Winrock Farms in its hay day is still a jewel when depth and muscle are needed. Governess dam, Red Doc 3065, is very unique in that she combines Red Doc Quien Sabe 0120 and Red Doc Jefe 4-125, two bulls who balance each other’s traits.

Lot 11 Pick of Two Bred Heifers Offered by Strait Ranches Strait Ranches will be selling choice of two bred heifers, SR 106/8 and SR 64/4. Both bred heifers are sired by LJV Mason 0/72, a proven performance sire and sire of show winners, and out of daughters of Alexander 156/8, an Alexander 49/4 son. LJV Mason was performance tested on the 2010-2011 Rio Grande Valley Beef Improvement Test and was Grand Champion Santa Gertrudis in the Early Yearling Division with a 128.77 ADG Ratio, 105.98 REA/CWT Ratio, 141.74 Marbling Ratio and overall RGVBIA ratio of 115.39. LJV Mason 0/72 was sired by SR 710 (owned by Larry Sidebottom), a WR Challenger son, who was high indexing Early Yearling Santa Gertrudis bull on the 2008 Rio Grande Valley Beef Improvement Test with an overall RGVBIA ratio of 115.56. The Alexander 156/8 daughters have played an extremely important role in the development of our cow herd as they are fertile, moderate, and strong uddered females. Quite simply 106/8 and 64/4 should prove to be a great combination of performance and strong maternal characteristics.

Semen interest package - 50 STRAWS • The most talked about bull in the 2015 year, no question, was Red Doc Dinero 4088. He not only topped the Red Hot Bull Sale at a whopping $53,000, but ranked number one for carcass out of the spring bulls. He is owned by Rancho La Ceiba and Smoking Ash, they purchased Dinero 4088 to produce cattle with greater market place value. Dinero’s dam, the famous Red Doc Bonita, has sold over $106,000 in natural calves and is also the dam of Cross Timber’s Si Sabe 3106 (high selling bull at Red Hot bull Sale 2014, $31,000). • Since April of last year, Dinero 4088 has sold $44,000 in semen sales, collected 3,500 straws, serviced 50 natural services and still maintains the cowman’s power in a moderate package weighing 1,960 lbs. • To date, powerful operations both nationwide and internationally have purchased packages, such as: Cherokee Ranch, Olivarez Ranches, Southern Cattle Company, Al Shiyou, Townsend Cattle Company, etc. • As decided by La Cieba and Smoking Ash, only two more packages will be sold on this incredible bull. Each of the two packages will consist of 50 straws. Once these packages are sold, no more semen will be sold in the U.S. for 10 years. Only one of the packages is offered in the 2016 Mid Coast Super Sale with the final package to be sold in the 2017 calendar year.
