Greetings! The anticipation is building for Durhams in the Dakotas 2018 and I’m proud of what we have assembled for your first look. 2018 marks our 12th annual bull sale and as I write this we are coming off nearly a full week of sub-zero temps with lows of -25 or lower and wind chills approaching -50. If there is anything I’m confident about after all of that, it’s that the dams of the bulls on the forthcoming pages are North Dakota Tough. It is a testament to the hardiness in these cattle and a reflection of the selection pressure that we have placed on them to not only survive, but thrive in a variety of environments. In the spring of 2017, we calved nearly 400 head of females and these bulls represent the very top cut of the male progeny. Moreover, if there was ever a year when I wished we could bring them all to Denver again, 2018 would be it. The depth of quality and diversity in this years group truly is the best we have ever assembled. The 2 year old’s leading off the sale are not the also rans or bulls that didn’t sell as yearlings, but the very best of our April and May born bulls that were held and targeted specifically for this sale as 2’s and represent new sires that were former sale toppers here themselves. Sons of JSF Compass 186A, JSF King 116B, and JSF Broker 157Z, are sale features along with an outstanding Optimal son. Last, but certainly not least, a future herd sire by immortality himself, JSF Marquis 127X, proven to be one of the best breeding bulls to ever bear the prefix. These bulls were developed on grass last summer with no supplement, brought to the yard October 10th and started on a ration. They come to you fresh, hardened, and ready to work. Our yearling bulls endured the 7th driest summer on record in our state and didn’t miss a beat. They weaned heavy and have gained nicely since hitting the yard. Each sire group is loaded with outstanding individuals that will fit a variety of programs and environments. Functional bulls, backed by balanced EPD profiles and breed leading maternal indexes is what sets this group apart. Speaking of setting apart, over half the offering is considered to be heifer safe. We are proud to have changed what was once a breed issue into a program strength. Shorthorn bulls can be calving ease, and JSF bulls are proof. To further enhance our sale, we are offering a large group of bred heifers. Single lot registrable breds, along with commercial SHxSMxRA, purebred Angus heifers and blue roan ShorthornPlus heifers will be sorted into groups of 5 based on size and calving date. I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to view the sale offering. In addition to this, videos will be posted on our website by January 25th. If you are able, you are welcome to come to visit the ranch anytime prior to the sale. We enjoy showing people the cowherd, wintering facilities, feedlot, herd bulls, and commercial breds. If you are unable to attend the sale, let anyone of us or the sale consultants know how we may be of service to you. Thank you so very much and may you have a most prosperous 2018! DURHAMS FOREVER!

Suitable for heifers. This bull reminds me so much of his great sire. His dam needs no intro. See him in person in Denver or at the ranch sale day. He is far better than his picture. If you need a turnout bull to cover a large group of heifers, take a long look here. You, and whoever calves heifers bred to him can sleep at night and get quality progeny in the process.

Lot 7 :: Great fronted, huge bellied, big boned meat wagon by Compass. Several people asked us to cut this bull last fall/early winter to sell him as a steer. I felt he had too much value. His dam topped our fall female sale selling to our long term customers the Anderson Family in MN, and his full sister made her way to the Holland family in MD. Lot 8 :: Good looking, high performing, tank of a Blue herd sire. Take him home, let him go to work, and raise awesome females and heavy steers. Lot 9 :: This bulls dam is one of my favorite Angus cows and would be picture ready any day of the year. She did a great job with this son. Bulls breed like their dams and with Big Sky topside, consistent quality is ensured. 10
DURHAMS IN THE DAKOTAS
ABOUT the BULLS... These bulls have been raised by good milking, easy fleshing mothers in pastures along the banks of the Sheyenne River Valley system in North Dakota. Starting just east of Cooperstown, ND and running approximately 80 miles South of there to Lisbon, ND, these bulls grow up having to travel for water, forage, and shade. Only the top 25% are retained as bulls. Once weaned, they are fed for optimum, not maximum gain, in large pens free choice hay, on a 52 mCal ration. This allows the bulls to express their differences genetically but not get overly fat. Once yearling weights and scan data are recorded, the bulls are gradually backed down to a 42 mCal ration prior to turnout and/or delivery.

Suitable for heifers. Terms to be announced on or prior to sale day. JSF Josey Wales 126E is an incredible story against all odds. An Outlaw out of one of our best cows, he was bred for, and born to be great. On April 7th, 2017, I found his dam dead, for no apparent reason, an autopsy later revealing a blood clot that had burst in her heart and she had no chance. I figured from that point on, this bull calf had no chance either. I thought when he got hungry enough we might be able to graft him on to something else. In amidst 200 other pairs, he wasn’t having it. So, he stayed there, went to summer pasture with the bull pairs, and I won’t soon forget the look on my vets face when he jumped on the scale last fall and I shared his story. It’s only begun.

If you are from the state of ND, that name needs no introduction as they do an outstanding job with every animal that bears the CARGO prefix and have done so for decades. What many people don’t know is that Preston’s first Shorthorn came from me and also happened to be the first heifer I sold private treaty when I decided I was staying close to home and that we were going to make our Shorthorn cattle into something better. That was 18 years ago. Since, he worked for me and now has a son of his own. Neat when things come full circle. Great bull from a great young man and family.

We think these bulls and their pen mate heifers have a place for our customers who wan t to make solid black cattle but with a touch of hybrid vigor, eye appeal, and disposition offered by their Shorthorn influence.
