INTERNATIONAL CHAMPION FEMALE BRC 805/8 AND HER NATURAL CALF
Before you read the catalog, we want to let you in on something.
Before you start browsing this unprecedented offering, we wanted to set the stage for the journey that’s taken us to this sale.
The year 2010: Brandon resigns from his job as manager of the Mississippi State University farm, moves to Texas, we get married. At that time, the cows I owned included 98/6, JDH Pittman, 797, and 645 (Captain’s dam). Brandon arrived in Texas hauling two weaned heifers, 382 and her full sister, in his weathered red trailer.
In the early years of our operation, fertility was an area Brandon noticed we needed to improve. I had paid absolutely no attention to this, largely due to my focus on simply showing. Our honeymoon phase took a hit when Brandon informed me that he intended to send my prized Shorthorn cow to Wharton Livestock Auction because she hadn’t calved in five years and couldn’t be kept as a “mere pet.” My tears led to a compromise, and he agreed to let me keep her as a “mere pet.”
In all seriousness, we recognized the need for change. We stood at a crossroads familiar to many Brahman breeders: wanting cattle that excel in the show ring while also striving for a cow herd that consistently calves every 12 months, requires minimal feed, and produces vigorous calves that nurse on their own.
We turned to a well-known breeder, and shared our goal for the future: “What if we could keep breeding champions, keep breeding Register of Renown winners AND also win some Maternal Merit awards too?” The response was very shocking and discouraging: “Maternal merit is for losers.”
However, we went ahead and started making changes within our program, seeking the perfect blend of the exquisite show cattle we had been known for breeding while restoring functionality.
Our problems, we found, lied in at least two areas. First, we had allowed conventional flushing to excuse our excessively long calving intervals. We told ourselves, “It’s okay if our donors don’t have natural calves because they’re producing so many embryos.” Consulting with Cary Crow, we ventured into IVF for the first time. TransOva helped us devise a plan to maintain regular calving among our donors while still producing essential embryos to propagate superior BRC genetics worldwide. One success story is BRC 805/8, the 2021 International Champion Female. Since having her first natural calf, she has undergone IVF six times, with an average of over 12 transferable embryos while calving naturally each year. When you visit BRC Ranch, you’ll find Houston and National Champions like Boom Shaka Laka, 805, Sweetie, all in the front pasture with natural calves at their sides—how it should be.
Our second issue involved excessively tight bloodlines. We found ourselves trapped in a cycle of repeatedly using the same bulls and matings. While inbreeding can serve a purpose, it can also magnify numerous problems. The textbook definition of “problems with inbreeding” really hit home for us: “The most apparent effects of inbreeding include reduced reproductive efficiency, increased mortality rates, slower growth, and a higher occurrence of hereditary abnormalities.” It was a clear call for change.
So in the BRC spirit of embracing both history and progress, we made a pivotal decision years ago. The BRC herd had become too concentrated on the Manso bloodline and needed something different. Brandon and Keaton developed a two-part plan to infuse some hybrid vigor in an outcross fashion. After decades of tireless bloodline research, they charted a course back to the bedrock of the breed—the ancestral lines of Manso and Imperator.

It’s entirely possible to breed championship show cattle that thrive in the real world.

SIRES REPRESENTED IN THIS SALE
Blending BRC’s best bloodlines with new infusions of Imperator
A pure Imperator bloodline still endures today, a tribute the Sartwelle family, founding fathers of ABBA, who have meticulously safeguarded the Imperator’s line of continuity through the years. We leased a pure Imperator bull for natural breeding, and the calves surpassed every expectation. We had successfully infused Phase I of fresh vitality into our already exceptional cattle.
Enter Phase 2. Another famous Imperator son, Imparistre, was the foundation sire of the Emperor bloodline, famously championed by the Partin family of Florida. Emperor’s mark left an lasting impression of producing functionally efficient, broody cows that continually raise calves and make a profit for their proud owners.
After numerous visits to the Partin Ranch, now in Texas, we found ourselves in awe of the unparalleled functionality, fertility, and broodiness embodied by their cow herd. While we brag about the abundance of International Champions gracing our front pasture, the Partins had their own point of pride - a multitude of Maternal Merit cows in theirs.
Our choice became evident: MSP King Garrett 584/7. We procured a substantial amount of semen and proceeded to pair it with our best donors. The results have been nothing short of extraordinary—a fresh lineage of “the modern Brahman” that can harmoniously blend with an array of sires within the breed.
“You will know them by their fruits,” is a scripture in Matthew 7 that describes how to decipher between real and false prophets. It could also be used to decipher between Brahman breeders who truly care about the future of the breed and those who don’t.
Our “fruits” are showcased here. It wouldn’t be possible without the invaluable contributions from the Sartwelles and Partins who wholeheartedly collaborated with us on this venture. It serves a testament to the heritage and innovation that thrives across the pastures of BRC Ranch, elevating our legacy of our world-renowned championship Brahman cattle with a resounding note of maternal and functional progress.

She was personally handpicked by Sloan Williams for Annie when she was born, making her a cherished gift from one generation to the next. This was the last female he personally selected for one of his great-grand children and as always, he picked her a great one. This 380 daughter is out of the great 663/6 cow, making her a full sister to Mollie’s 263/8, a well known producer of champions. Boom Shaka Laka x Lupita Cow Family
Lupita 835/7 is modern leader of the famed Jennessa cow family, which has blessed us with legends Captain and 160, and so many more. These two powerhouse bulls - 160 and Captain - shared the title of the #1 sire of the 2023 International Brahman Show. Lupita’s son, BRC Geronimo’s Cadillac 230, was the high selling bull of our spring online sale - valued at $82,000 and Calf Champion at Houston.
When you’re talking the present day cow power of the breed - the names of 21, Lupita, and Sweetie rise to the top. Ruffle Some Feathers is designed to do just as her name implies - she’s the foundation of the future of any top tier Brahman program.
