CIRCLE A WANGUS BULLS

Welcome

CIRCLE A WANGUS BULLS

13 Annual th

predictable, powerful, profitable

to our

Fall Bull

Heifer Sale.

This will no doubt be the most unique sale Circle A has ever hosted. This will mark the first time ever Wangus (Wagyu/Angus cross bulls) will be offered for sale to the public. Circle A has spent nearly a decade testing these genetics in our own breeding system, you can read about their merits in this sale catalog. To say the least, we’re impressed! So impressed, we’re turning our entire 7,000 head operation into a Wangus cowherd. Even if we don’t sell another animal for breeding stock, we know it is the most profitable thing we can do for our operation. The Wangus program isn’t a scheme to sell bulls, it isn’t a fad, a buzzword a new release looking for members to jump on a bandwagon; in fact, we’ve been somewhat hesitant to share the product. We’ve been working on the Wangus project since 2010. As we all know genetic change and proving a concept in beef cattle production takes time. We first proved to ourselves that Wangus cattle hang a far more profitable carcass achieve 80% Prime while going to heavier carcass weights and remaining leaner. We’ve since proved their genetic value as females in the pasture. As quarter and eight bloods their conception rates are higher than straight Angus cattle, their mothering ability is great, udder quality is excellent and they appear to be much more heat tolerant. Our only challenge has not been having a weekly supply of finished product for our packer partner to market. As we roll over our entire Circle A herd to Wangus cattle we are also shifting calving seasons and managing calves into the feedlot to help ensure a monthly or even weekly finished cattle supply of Wangus beef. We’re offering these bulls in hopes of buying back their progeny to help fill supply gaps as well. The great thing is these bulls are not only out of the same great cows as our Circle A Premium Bulls (CAPB), we specifically try and pick out some of the stouter made cows to better complement the Wagyu genetics when making the Wangus bulls. They are backed by the best cows in the Circle A cowherd. Circle A is also proud to stand behind our bulls offering a 90 day breeding soundness guarantee and top of the line herd health management. We offer free delivery on two or more bulls anywhere in the lower 48 and a full-time marketing/customer service manager to oversee your satisfaction. The sale cattle will be available for viewing starting the day before the sale and prior to that by appointment. For any questions about the genetics, services or programs please call Nick Hammett at 573-280-5308.

Sale Format

We will be trying a new sale format that many have referred to as a “cowboy auction”. We will not run each bull through the ring. We many have a representative bull in the ring, but will let you know which lot we are actually bidding on. Every bull will begin with a base price. Anyone willing to buy the bull at that base price may raise their bidder number. The “auctioneer” will raise the bid by $250 or $100 until only one bidder is left willing to pay the asking price. If two bidders drop out at the same price the one with the lower bidder number gets first option at the bull, the next bidder gets the option to pay $50 more and so on until the winner is determined.

Directions to Circle A Ranch

A quarter mile east on K Hwy off Hwy 17 between Iberia and Crocker.

Terms and Conditions

Terms of the sale are cash or check on sale day or payment wired on the next business day.

Sale Day Phones

Call us toll free (800-CIRCLE-A). There will be no sale day conference call.

Individual Performance

All bulls have been vaccinated, dewormed and fertility tested by Dr. Ray Stegeman, DVM. All cattle will be accompanied by proper health certificates for immediate shipment. Certified herd #1718. As we have moved to selling older bulls we have learned how to develop them slower and better. While their weights may be slightly lighter than other producers, they should prove to be more durable and more athletic as a result of their development. All bulls are virgin bulls, unless otherwise indicated.

Breeding Soundness Guarantee

Every effort has been made to ensure the bulls offered for sale are fertile. All bulls have undergone a breeding soundness exam and are guaranteed against breeding injury for 90 days from the date of sale. All yearling bulls have been examined to be physically sound, if they have failed to pass a fertility test at this time, as they are very young when tested, we recommend retesting them before the breeding season and stand behind their fertility. Any such cases will be marked on the supplement sheet. If a replacement is needed, one will be provided depending on availability. If a replacement is not available, credit may be given in the next bull sale, minus the salvage value and breeding use fee of the injured bull. If any injury should occur, please notify Circle A Ranch within the 90 day warranty period and prior to the injured bull being sold for salvage. Heifers are guaranteed bred via ultrasound and are guaranteed bred for 45 days following the sale. If you notice a cycling heifer within 45 days of the sale, have her confirmed open by a licensed veterinarian and contact Circle A within 45 days from sale date.

EPDs Explained

Every sale we have a few customers new to beef cattle production or a few who have just finally become interested in better understanding EPDs. Let this page serve as a brief overview and usage guide for EPDs in our system.

Why are EPDs the best tool we have available?

For years cattlemen have used actual weights as a measuring stick for genetic selection. The problem is actual weights are greatly influenced by the environment. Rainfall, temperature, forage availability, age of dam, and sex of calf all affect weight. Most importantly, weights are influenced by how much feed animals are given. We could easily make every bull in this catalog weigh over 800 pounds at weaning and 1400 pounds at yearling, but the resulting product would be fat bulls with low libido and bad feet. EPDs remove the environmental differences and get at the heart of what we’re looking for, genetic merit. EPDs not only include the animals adjusted weights, they are calculated on ratios which compare their individuals weights to their contemporaries raised in the same environment. They also take into account the ratios of animals they are related to. Information on the sire, dam, half brothers and sisters help make EPDs much more accurate than the weight of an individual alone.

How to Use EPDs

EPDs are a comparative value. Example: a bull with a 3.0 BW EPD will have calves that on average will weigh 2 pounds more than a bull with a 1.0 BW EPD. EPDs cannot tell you what calves will weigh, again that depends on the environment in which they are raised, the amount of nutrition they receive, the cow that they are bred to, etc… The EPD is the best estimate of their genetic value. These bulls have not had calves, as they do and if the weights of their calves were reported, their EPDs would become more accurate. Obviously, not every calf out of a bull will weigh the same at birth or weaning, there will be a range and the EPD is estimating the average weight.

Birth Weight (BW)

Expressed in pounds, lower number represents lighter calves at birth. May be possible to get too light as calving ease is really what we are after and birth weight is highly correlated to weaning weight.

Weaning Weight (WW)

Expressed in pounds, higher number represents heavier weaning weights.

Milk

Predictor of milking ability of a bull’s daughters. Higher number represents more milk.

Yield Grade

Expressed as USDA yield grade, the difference between any two sires is the difference in average yield grade of their steer offspring. A lower yield grade would indicate a leaner, heavier muscled carcass with a higher meat yield.

Marbling (Marb)

Expressed as USDA marbling score, the difference between any two sires is the difference in the average marbling score of their steer offspring. A higher marbling score indicate a higher percentage of intramuscular fat and thus a higher USDA quality grade and greater carcass value.

See EPDs exclusive to CAPB bulls on Page 7 CAPB and Wangus EPDs are run in separate analysis and are not directly comparable. FALL BULL & HEIFER SALE • OCTOBER 19, 2019 || 5

Wangus INTRODUCING

Over

a quarter century ago we settled on a motto for our company, “Quality Beef Is Our Business”. The Angus breed was chosen to be the foundation of our breeding program, but we have spent the last decade proving an injection of the right Wagyu genetics, in the right amount, can lead to higher profits. We saw a need for higher quality grades because over the last two decades, the Angus breed has evolved into the foundation of the entire United States cowherd. This Angus influence has yielded the highest quality grades in decades. With so many high grading cattle the premium for Choice continues to decline. We can see the writing on the wall that Choice, maybe even upper Choice, could soon become the base price for beef and USDA Prime will be necessary for achieving premiums. While there are certainly Angus genetics that grade a higher percent Prime than others, a straight-Angus commercial cowherd, highly selected for marbling may not be ideal in all situations. With over-emphasis on any one single trait, especially marbling, we worry about how selection would change cow size, milk levels, fleshing-ability and reproductive performance. Not to mention that a straight-Angus commercial cowherd forgoes any benefits derived from crossbreeding and heterosis. Heterosis is a real and important factor in commercial beef cattle production. Heterosis provides a performance

PAGE 8 || FALL BULL & HEIFER SALE • OCTOBER 19, 2019

advantage above the mere average of the animal’s parents and has its greatest advantages on lowly heritable traits such as reproduction and health. For years commercial cattlemen have had to make a choice when choosing a breed to complement their Angus-base cowherd. No matter what

When selling calves back to Circle A Feeders calves out of half-blood bulls will receive a $30 premium and calves out of a quarter-blood bull will receive a $20 premium.

route they choose to achieve heterosis, they almost always lowered percent Choice and Prime carcasses to accomplish it. We thought there had to be a better way and we’ve spent nearly the last decade proving there is. We looked to the Wagyu breed as a cross that could fill our needs. We were originally just looking to increase our percent Prime. Wagyu looked like an obvious place to do that, but to our surprise, the cross has offered us so much more in areas we really didn’t expect. In the feedlot, the results have been better than expected

predictable, powerful, profitable

A New Path to

PROFITABILITY

on overall profitability. The quarter-blood Wagyu run 7085% USDA Prime, which is what we hoped to achieve. We attribute our grading success to the fact that we only use the highest marbling lines of Wagyu we could find, and we have a great base of Angus genetics to start with. To achieve Prime grades with one fourth Wagyu genetics, we’re certain that not just any Wagyu genetics will do the trick and not just any Angus cowherd can be the foundation of the program.

What we didn’t necessarily expect was the other benefits that come along with the feedlot and carcass performance of the Wagyu cross. Feedlot health has been noticeably better in the Wagyu-cross cattle and we attribute that to the advantages of hybrid vigor. The Wagyu cross cattle will also stay leaner to heavier endpoints. We take the Wagyu cross steers to 1600 pounds live weight. We get fewer yield grade 4 and 5’s at 1600 pounds than we would with our straight Angus cattle at 1450 pounds. The added quality grade, fewer yield grade discounts and heavier carcass weights result in over $300 per head more for the Wagyu-cross steers. Perhaps the greatest surprise has been the performance of the quarter-blood Wagyu females in our commercial production system. As calves they’re not the stoutest or widest of the bunch, but by 1000 pounds you would be hard pressed to pick the Wagyu cross out of a bunch of Angus. The quarter-bloods look like a good, feminine Angus females. Their reproduction rates have consistently been slightly higher than the straight Angus, their mothering ability and udderquality has been very impressive, and they are slick haired in the summer. Over the past 5 years the Wagyu influenced females have averaged a 4% higher conception rate compared to straight Angus females in our production system. It has taken nearly 10 years for us to prove that our Wagyu program works, but with 5-year-old quarter-blood females in the pasture and 1000’s of head of carcass data, we’re are

confident that the system has the potential to add real value for commercial cattlemen. For producers retaining ownership or selling into a quality-based system that understands the value of these genetics, we’re not sure there is anything better out there. This sale will be the first offering of these genetics outside of our system. It is going to take some education for everyone to understand the purpose of these genetics. It takes a half-blood bull to make a quarter-blood market animal when used on Angus cows. Half-blood Wagyu bulls are not going to look like top-end Angus bulls. They will not be as growthy, as wide or as stout as a good Angus bull. The proof is in the progeny, the value is what is does in the feeding and carcass phases of production and customers will have to be marketing into a system to reap those rewards for it to make sense. We know we will have to pay a premium for calves out of these bulls, but we’re more than willing to do that given our results. When selling calves back to Circle A Feeders calves out of half-blood bulls will receive a $30 premium and calves out of a quarter-blood bull will receive a $20 premium. We know the females also work great in commercial conditions and the Wangus can add value to nearly all phases of beef production. We’re so impressed with the program we’re turning our entire operation into a Wangus cowherd whether we sell another breeding animal or not, I’m not sure what more we could do to display greater confidence in the Wangus product.

CIRCLE A WANGUS BULLS

Wangus Bulls

We have found the optimum levels of Wagyu in both the pasture and on the rail to be ¼ Wagyu. For nearly all our customers that means using a ½-blood Wagyu bull to achieve optimum levels. Half-blood Wagyu bulls have lighter individual weights and a less powerful phenotype than we are accustomed to, the proof, and the profit, is in their progeny. Our guess is most buyers will be more comfortable with a quarter-blood to start. Using a quarter-blood you will make 1/8-blood calves, increasing your percent Prime slightly, but likely seeing little other differences. Remember these are yearling bulls and we have found them to be aggressive breeders, they should cover no more than 15-20 cows and will need good nutrition. Wangus do their best growing after a year of age. They will develop into massive, stout bulls by three years of age.

®

Wangus

Wangus® is a registered trademark of Circle A Ranch. For us, it is the perfect blend of Angus and Wagyu genetics. After nearly a decade of work, ¼ Wagyu appears to be the sweet spot for maximum profitability in our operation. The beef produced from the quarter-blood Wagyu, grade 80% USDA Prime. Compared to straight Angus beef, the marbling is more finely distributed throughout, not just the entire ribeye, but the entire carcass. The fat quality is more buttery, melts more clearly and has better flavor. Compared to fullblood Wagyu, you have the ability to cook, eat and enjoy an entire steak, the way it was meant to be. 14 || FALL BULL & HEIFER SALE • OCTOBER 19, 2019

Sale Order We’re often asked how we determine our sale order and I can assure you that the bulls are not necessarily sold from the most valuable to the least valuable. First, every bull in the sale from beginning to end has undergone an intense selection process. If they made it to the sale ring, we’re confident they have the genetic potential to add value to your herd or ours. Second, genetic value of individual animals will be different for each customer. Depending on your individual operations’ labor resources, feed resources, marketing goals and just plain preferences, each bull will have a different value to you. In any given sale our bulls will have been raised in 5 or 6 different pens from yearling until sale time. We do not want to re-mix those pens just prior to or at the sale. So, a big part of how the bulls are grouped and the order in which they are sold depends on who has been developed with who prior to the sale. Sure, we try and put some of our top-end bulls up front, but after that the quality will run deep end to end.

Sale Bull Selection

Each sale we have some questions concerning how we go about selecting bulls for the sale. An explanation on how Circle A Premium Bulls (CAPB) are selected in general can be found in the forward of the sale catalog. More specifically, after the bull’s mothers have been determined to be among the very highest indexing out of 7,000 head, each bull must also make the cut at a number of hurdles. We give a round of vaccinations at around 90 days of age, any bull not meeting the phenotypic quality standards may be cut at this time. At weaning and yearling, weights, phenotypic evaluation, ultrasound measurements, scrotal circumference and disposition are all scrutinized to determine which bulls make the cut. Around 3 weeks prior to the sale bulls go through a breeding soundness exam and only bulls passing make the sale. Some customers have asked why we have “outs” in the sale compared to the sale catalog. Sale catalogs begin being made around 2 months prior to the sale. Any bull not passing a breeding soundness exam, showing signs of lameness or foot issue or disposition issues will be culled from the sale, even if they are already in the catalog. We want to keep the quality of bulls we sell very high and we’re willing to pull bulls as late as sale day to ensure every bull that goes through the sale ring is as durable and valuable as possible.

Circle A Feeders Buy-Back Program The Circle A Buy-back Program has been in existence since 2007. We have purchased cattle from our customers every month for over 12 years. We have weathered the ups and downs of the cattle cycles, seen suppliers and buyers, premiums and profits come and go. To date, we’ve spent over $70 million dollars buying calves from our customers. Our motto for the program from the beginning has been “Only the Best”. We pay top of the market for calves, no questions asked, for top quality cattle. Sometimes customers’calves do not work in our system and we find it impossible to continue paying top of the market price for their calves. We know they can do everything right, but when commingling calves, sometimes it simply does not work. When we feel there is a high risk of it not working again, whether it be a long-time supplier or one-time supplier, we must discontinue buying their calves. The buy-back program is not an absolute guarantee, we obviously cannot force ourselves into an unprofitable situation and risk the entire program to the detriment of ourselves and our customers. We do try and work closely with our customers to feedback data and to make recommendations on feedlot performance, carcass quality and health to make improvements prior to letting customers go. We have several customers who have sold their calves to Circle A Feeders for over a decade. If the calves work, we’re happy to continue to buy them and excited to see what the Wangus program can do for our customers’operations. PAGE 22 || FALL BULL & HEIFER SALE • OCTOBER 19, 2019

CIRCLE A WANGUS BULLS

predictable, powerful, profitable

Grow a little,

Every year at our Bull & Heifer Sales we have a buyer, or two, who purchases many heifers. Buyers can be assured they’re getting a uniform set of heifers from a single brand, calving in a tight window and can even get them carrying the same sex calf; an offer unparalleled anywhere in the Midwest. Buying heifers in that volume is fun to watch, and sure makes the sale go fast, but for most people it represents an investment that is just not possible.

Get a Lot.

To accommodate all buyers, Circle A sells our commercial heifers just five head at a time. Five head may seem small compared to 100 head, but examine the difference five head can make to a small sized herd. If you’re running 25 or 30 cows, about the average sized cow/calf operation in the Midwest, you still have to own a truck, a trailer, a head catch, feed bunks, hay racks, etc... You have nearly all the overhead costs of operating a 100 cow operation. Your annual expense of adding five more head to your operation is minimal, but your average overhead cost is decreased significantly. The greatest advantage is the added revenue those five head are going to provide next year. At Circle A Feeders our average price paid for calves right now is running $1000 with many still exceeding the $1100 mark. As the markets find balance, look for them to remain fairly good for at least a couple more years. Five more heifers this year could mean $6000 more dollars in your pocket next year at marketing time. All markets run in cycles and there is still time to turn a profit in our current cycle.

Don’t miss your opportunity to buy quality bred heifers sorted for due date and fetal sex from Circle A at our sale on March 21st. FALL BULL & HEIFER SALE • OCTOBER 19, 2019 || 25

This sale will also represent the first time we have ever sold Wangus females to the public. This will be the most diverse and potentially the most valuable set of bred heifers we have ever offered at Circle A. For those who want to get a jumpstart on the Wangus program, these heifers are your greatest opportunity and present many levels of involvement. The first two groups sold will be straight Angus females bred to a half-blood Wangus bull. He is one of our most exciting upcoming sires stemming from two lines of Wagyu being an F2, as he is sired by a half-blood and out of a half-blood. They have all been sexed as bull calves and are all eligible for a $30 premium at Circle A Feeders. Lots 3 and 4 are Hereford influenced females, lot 3 are bred to Wangus bulls, Lot 4, four are bred to Angus bulls and one to a Wangus bulls. You get great crossbred females with highly valuable calves inside of them. 26 || FALL BULL & HEIFER SALE • OCTOBER 19, 2019

Lot 5 and 6 are 1/8 Wagyu cows. You get just a shot of heterosis, they make fantastic cows. Lot 5 is carrying all bull calves and bred to Angus bulls, Lot 6 is carrying all heifer calves and 4 are bred to Angus bulls and one to a Wangus bull. Lot 7 are 1/16 Wangus cows. So little you wouldn’t really notice. 4 are carrying bull calves, four are bred to Angus. Lots 8-10 are straight Angus cows bred to straight Angus bulls. Realize we may have to switch some of these out by sale time if an issue arises and fetal sexing is not guaranteed, but is very accurate. Updated information will be available on a supplement sheet a week prior to sale day.
