TRAINING TIPS with PHIL HAUGEN

THE FUTURE COULDN’T BE BRIGHTER FOR BREAKAWAY ROPING! I just returned from the Cheyenne Frontier Days and was privelaged to watch the inaugural event of Women’s Breakaway Roping at Cheyenne. There were 240 women entered and the setup was a 20’ score with a hand pulled barrier. The cattle were chute run and half the ropers got a 3rd run and half got a 4th run. The cattle had their first and second runs on them the previous two days in the slack when the tie down ropers ran them. They took the top 20 out of the ropers that had a 3rd run on the cattle and the top 20 out of the ropers that had a 4th run on the cattle. So 40 ropers made it back to the progressive rounds in the performances at Cheyenne Frontier Days. The roping was very competitive and the women roped outstanding. Of the ropers that had a third run on the calves it took a 5.2 to be in the top 20 out of the first 120 ropers. Of the ropers that had a fourth run on the calves it took a 5.7 to be in the top 20 of that set of ropers. Now if this country being 5.2 or 5.7 in the breakaway seems like all day but in that setup with a 20’ score, and calves that we’re strong it was a heckuva roping. The stands were packed and you could feel the electricity in the air. Noone knew what to expect but anyone that was there would agree that it couldn’t have turned out any better for the ropers. The women really put on a show. There we’re a lot of really good runs that didn’t make the cut and everybody brought their best effort. They ran 240 calves in about 3 hours and the crowd was really into it from start to

4

finish. It brought contestants, families, and friends to Cheyenne that had never been there previously. The same week as Cheyenne Bex sunglasses sponsored a roping that paid 25 places and paid $25,000 to the winner and $15,000 to second place and so on down the line 25 spots. Also this week the Days of 47 Rodeo in Salt Lake City, UT will pay $50,000 to the winner in the Breakaway Roping and $25,000 to second and so on down the line. There will be a number of ropers that will fill their money sack for the year this week. It’s amazing to see that a woman that has put so much time and effort into a sport and an event that they have such a passion for be able to make such a good living with their rope. I just think it’s awesome and I am so proud for all of the Breakaway Ropers out there and how bright their future is going forward. This last week you all made History! I want to send a special shout out to all of you that have supported the Breakaway roping for all of these years and have made it what it is today. Our ropers have a bright future and for those young ones coming up the opportunities to them are going to be, what at one time not too long ago, was unimaginable. What an exciting time in this industry! Have a great month and God Bless

Collector’s Corner

What Is A Collection Really Worth?

Collectors collect for a number of reasons. The love of collecting items they find interesting. The thrill of the hunt. Social interaction with other collectors and dealers. Some collectors are nostalgic and want to surround themselves with memories of what they consider to be better times. Knowledge and learning is often a motivator. Some collectors are just “OCD” and want one of everything! LOL! Apart from the reasons listed above, financial security or gain is also often a factor. We hope to sell the items we collect for at least as much (and someday hopefully more) than was paid for them. Kind of like a savings account you can enjoy looking at! Something we need to understand about selling a collection is how value is determined. First off, when it comes to value, what was originally paid for an item does not matter. Period. It is what items will bring in today’s market that determines the value. However there are different kinds of value. The highest valuation often put on an item is an appraisal for insurance purposes. Now, that is not to say folks are trying to “get at” the insurance company or commit fraud in any way. It is just that items valued for insurance purposes are valued as to what it would take to actually replace that particular item, with another just like it, or as close to just like it as possible. This can be hard to do, so the dollar amount needed to actually replace an item is often high. It usually has nothing to do with what similar items may sell for in an open market. So appraised value for insurance purposes is most always above the actual market value. That brings us now to market value. This is the amount an item will sell for—not the amount needed to replace it. There are several kinds of valuations within the market however. For example, there is retail, wholesale, jobber, auction and all kinds of variations thereof. Retail market value is the highest form of market value. It is what a gallery or dealer expects to realize for an item. It is usually not the fastest form of selling however, because the seller is waiting for that certain buyer who is willing to pay top dollar. They don’t come along every day. Of course, everyone wants to realize a retail price for their item, and it is most often how a perceived value is placed on an item. It is just very rare that collectors get to sell their things for full retail price unless they are very patient and are willing to spend a lot of time and money advertising and looking for “that end user” type of buyer. That brings us to the next value level. Wholesale. This is what dealers typically pay for an item when buying it. A general rule is that figure is around half of retail, although it can be more, or less, depending on the price range and ease of selling or desirability on an item. For example, wholesale on a $10,000 item is probably well over half, but wholesale on a $10 item is probably under half. It has to do with the amount of expenses it takes a dealer to sell that item. A dealer usually needs to figure at least 20%, and sometimes more, for overhead, advertising, labor and other expenses in order to get the item sold. They also need to factor in a profit margin for their time and efforts. These factors are

14

taken into account when a wholesale price is determined. Wholesale is what a collector often gets for their items if they sell or consign to a dealer or gallery. Jobber pricing is the next level and has to do with what a wholesaler pays to a manufacturer or maker. Wholesalers are folks who buy from the source then turn around and sell to dealers. They are middle-men. Jobber pricing is usually about ⅓ of retail, although it can also vary depending on price range and desirability such as what was described with wholesale above. Jobber pricing is what a collector might expect to receive if they are selling to a wholesaler (who then shops the item to retail sellers). Collectors rarely deal with “jobbers” however. The price realized at an auction usually falls somewhere between wholesale and retail. More common types of items tend to fall towards the wholesale end of the spectrum at auction while, unique items (especially of great desirability) tend to bring retail and sometimes even more at auction. Sometimes retail pricing is even established by competitive bidding on rare items. Auctions are often a good route for collectors, especially those who have large or unique collections. Even after commissions, they often realize more than they would have if they had sold at wholesale or jobber pricing. As collectors, how do we put a value on our items? Good question. We all like to think they are worth more than we paid. We also like to think that ours is worth at least high retail (or what we see others asking for similar items). Everyday, folks come in with items for sale. One of the most common things I hear is, “I saw one just like this online and they are going for ____.” First off, let me tell you, asking and getting are two different things. Anyone can ask for what ever they want online. What you need to look for if you are trying to value your own items, is things like yours that have actually SOLD and at what price they sold at. Sold items determine current market value. A dealer determines what they are willing to pay from there. Asking a reputable dealer or auction company for assistance in determining a fair value is wise. They generally have the best feel for what things have been selling for today. Not 10 years ago and not what it will hopefully be worth in another 10—but today. In the end, what a collection is truly worth is what a willing buyer will pay for it and a willing seller will accept for it.

THROUGH MY EYES

CODY CUSTER -

A covert operation.... As Christians if we are taught to constantly manipulate our conversations to the subject of the Lord, that approach can put great pressure on us. So much so that we may miss the pleasure of living free in sonship as well as miss seeing people experience the process of life that will produce true conversion to sonship. I can remember so many road trips (one in particular) where I was so consumed with how to witness to this guy that I missed a relationship with him. I wish that I’d just hung and gotten to know his story and still (20 years later) be engaged in a relationship. My pressure to witness to him caused him to get away from me and God, fast and far. I think if I’d have approached it the right way, through relationship, I would still have a place in his life. As it stands, I have no contact with him and have no idea what his relationship is to the Father. Father is relational and desires for us to represent Him through relationships. Manipulated conversations will most likely push people to resist the Father’s Spirit or even worse, a dead prayer to a God whose Spirit was never involved in the conversation to start with. Jesus Loves You!!

GOD BLESS Cody Custer 18

The Journey Continues for the Iron Cowboy by Ddee Haynes

“Jason and Amanda

know the journey for Hagen, their little Iron Cowboy, isn’t going to be an easy one but they also know “he is is a fighter!” In October of 2017, I wrote an article on Hagen Nielsen. Hagen at the time was five years old. Let me take you back to the day I first met this little blond-haired blue-eyed boy. I was at a rodeo in Woodward, OK, when Hagen came speeding around the corner. Hot on his heels was his mom Amanda scolding him for going too fast. As soon as Amanda was out of ear shot, I looked at Hagen and said, “well I guess you just got a speeding ticket!” We both laughed and that is how I became friends with Hagen. In your mind you are probably picturing Hagen coming around the corner on two legs like most children. But Hagen cannot walk or run. Instead his mode of transportation is what I would describe as a cross between a wheel chair and a small army tank. The only difference between any boy his age is Hagen has a rare disorder known as Bruck Syndrome. Bruck Syndrome is a combination of Osteogenesis Imperfect/OI (brittle bones) and Arthrogryposis (contractures of the limbs). Currently, there are only “13 reported” cases of Bruck Syndrome in the

Hagen showing off his catch of the day

world. The disease is a very rare syndrome characterized primarily by weak, brittle bones and abnormal knees, ankles and foot joints. The cause is thought to be an autosomal recessive inheritance. Since the syndrome/disease is so rare it is difficult to research. Bruck Syndrome has no effect on intelligence, vision or hearing. Hagen has also had to deal with severe scoliosis due to the Osteogenesis Imperfecta. Since he was 2 ½ years old he had to be in a halo traction to keep his back straight. But thanks to a surgery in March of this year, Hagen was able to get a MAGEC rod (a telescopic growing magnetic rod) placed on both sides of his spine. He is doing amazingly well, and his back is even straighter now than when he was forced to wear a halo on his head and be in traction. Prior to the surgery his back had a 101-degree curve. His back is now at a 45-degree angle. Hagen no longer has to wear the halo and his confidence has really come alive! Hagen is now able to ride unassisted while his dad Jason leads him on his little blind pony “Buttercup”. Hagen enjoys being a big brother to one-year old Bowie, roping and anything that deals with rodeo. Hagen is so excited because this summer, during the Northwest Oklahoma Junior Rodeo in Weatherford, OK, he is finally going to get his chance to compete in a rodeo just like his big sister Claire! Hagen will compete in the assisted barrel racing as well as dummy roping.

Although Hagen has undergone multiple surgeries to try and help his legs, the surgeries thus far have not been successful. Hagen’s legs below his knees are small and brittle with very little muscle. His lower legs will never be able to support his weight. By the time you read this Hagen will have had yet another surgery on his legs. Due to the AMC (arthrogryposis multiplex congenital) Hagen has contractures behind both knees which does not allow him to straighten his legs. The Nielsen’s pray that this surgery will be successful. Jason and Amanda know the journey for Hagen, their little Iron Cowboy, isn’t going to be an easy one but they also know “he is is a fighter!” The Nielsen’s try to treat their son like any normal child. Just like his big sister Claire, Hagen has chores, rules and consequences. Amanda and Jason allow Hagen to test his limits and will do whatever it takes to help their young son reach his dreams. Hagen is a true inspiration to everyone he meets. Rarely without a smile on his face Hagen faces each day and each obstacle with strength and determination beyond his years. Hagen has conquered so many milestones and overcame obstacles that would have stopped most. I just know in my heart my little friend Hagen aka, the Iron Cowboy, is going to accomplish big things in his life and I cannot wait to watch it happen! Keep on speeding through life Hagen!! Until Next Time…….

Hello! Hope everyone is having a great winter and dreaming of warmer weather and the 2019 NWOJR summer rodeo schedule! All new forms are uploaded and ready for you to send to Jamie. Our first rodeo will be in Alva on June 8-9th. Pre-entries are due the Wednesday before on June 5th! You can find the dates and entry methods on the Forms page. Also, the new rulebook is posted, so check it out when you get a chance! Pay attention to the order of events because we have switched things up for the upcoming season. With the finals being earlier this year, ticket money and sponsorships will be due earlier as well. The money will be due the weekend of the July 6-7th rodeo, so be sure and pick up your tickets at the first rodeo! Sponsor forms are on the Forms page if you would rather get sponsorships than sell tickets! You can also do a combination if you wish. We are going to add some extra incentive this year as far as fundraising is concerned! Remember last year the high ticket sales and/or highest sponsor collector received $400 in NRS gift cards and a beaded headstall! Not only will we recognize the high money raiser this year at the finals, but every member who raises at least $1000 by July 6-7th weekend, will receive a brand new hoverboard! Make sure you check the website for all updates and sponsorship forms!!! See ya this summer! We are looking forward to another great season!

MINISTRIES

Do What You Know! All of us want to grow and become who God has created us to be. Deep down inside we desire to accomplish what we are on this earth to accomplish. In order to be who God has created us to be and to do what He has created us to do, we must do what He says! When we act upon the word of God it will bring results in our life. We might not see it right away, but the change will take place. It’s like a farmer, every time he plants a seed, he doesn’t see the harvest immediately but he will see. Well, every time we act on God’s word it’s like sowing a seed and we might not see the results immediately but we will see it. Genesis 8:22 says “While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest,…. Shall not cease”. We sow a seed, there is a time and then there is a harvest. To continue to grow and develop I want to encourage you to sow the right

56

seeds. One of the ways to sow seeds in the kingdom of God is by doing what you know to do. James 1:22 says “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves”. James tells us that if we just hear what God is saying and don’t do it, we deceive ourselves. Deception is a powerful tool of the enemy because it means to believe something that is not true; to mislead; or to give a false image or impression. So when we don’t do what we know to do we can be misled or believe something else over God. I’m reminded of the story in Matthew 14:22-31. In this story Jesus had sent the disciples ahead of Him in their boats and He went up into the mountains to pray and get refueled. After He was refreshed and recharged He went towards the disciples on the water. While the disciples were on the water a storm showed up and the boat was being

tossed all around so Jesus starts making His way towards them walking on the water, and this is where we pick up the story, verse 26 “And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them saying “Be of good cheer! It is I ; do not be afraid.” And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying “Lord, save me!” And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” Notice, Peter heard Jesus say “come”, he acted on what he heard and he got results, he walked on water. But then he stopped acting on what he knew and started looking at his surroundings, the waves, and it caused him to take his eyes off of Jesus and it changed his results. When he stopped acting on what Jesus said he was mislead and started to believe that the storm was more powerful than the words of Jesus. He was deceived; mislead; believed something that was not true; he was given a false impression because of what he saw. Don’t get me wrong, the storm was real, the waves were real, but they were not more powerful than the words of Jesus. What made the difference was what he did. When he did what Jesus said, he accomplished the impossible, but when he quit acting on what he knew, he sank. I know the storms of life are real. The circumstances you are facing, the feelings you are experiencing, the situations that are all around you are real. But they are not more powerful than what God has told you in His word. What’s going to determine whether you sink or walk on water is what you do with what you know. Today, make the decision to do what you know!

God Bless Trey Johnson
