It was dry and it was cool. Normally spring is warm and brings rain - not this spring. Cows were starting to move to market as pastures remained dormant. With no run off or rain, the first to move were the old and the lame as cattlemen committed to plan B. They prayed they would not have to go to plan C or D but it looked grim. The weather forecasts were depressing.
And then from the south came a barn painter named Troy - he was long and lean and his business card could have read ‘Have paint, will travel.’ The fine print would have said ‘and perhaps bring rain.’ His painting was exceptional. This magician of moisture had a reputation that was legendary. He had closed out two-year droughts in the west. He had manufactured monsoons in the south. The day he arrived in Stavely, it rained an inch. Four days and four inches later, it dried up enough for him to start painting. Thank God for the Certified Angus Beef logo and that barn painter.

The families of Cudlobe once again have presented to you a very uniform set of Carcass Leading bulls for you to evaluate. This sale is one not to miss with breed leading genetics being offered to you. The data gathered of these cattle herds is simply outstanding with all the available tools being utilized. New A.I. Sires have been sourced by both families enabling new sires groups to be offered. These bulls have numbers that fit into the criteria that Cudlobe have established over the many years. The consistency of the cow herds enables the families to incorporate new sires into the program. This year there are a lot of new sires to choose from for their repeat buyers. There are some more ET calves as well from top donor cows from the ranch. Check all of them out, they will catch your eyes.
The sale will be at the Claresholm Community Hall this year and will start at 3 PM and will be a video sale. CANADIAN ANGUS ASSOCIATION’S CANADIAN BALANCED INDEX
Applying EPDs for all these traits into selection and breeding decisions can be challenging. Therefore, the Canadian Angus Association has worked to develop an Economic Selection Index that includes the EPDs for all traits. Traits are weighted in the index based on their economic impact on the Canadian commercial operation.
Basically, indexes help producers use EPDs to balance traits. Balancing traits can be complex. Not all traits make an equal contribution to profitability, and some traits counteract each other (e.g. post-weaning growth and cow size/feed requirements). Other traits are important to a certain threshold, then there is less benefit in going any further (e.g. calving ease) or even a direct cost (e.g. milk production).
A well-constructed index can help streamline the process of selecting cattle for breeding. It is not intended to replace individual trait EPDs (which will still be available) or to tell breeders how to breed. An index can help breeders focus on cattle that will tend to be more profitable under Canadian production systems and markets.
For the commercial producer—who likely purchases bulls and thinks about EPDs on only one day of the year—it is a useful overall guide that simplifies the complexity of multiple EPDs.
The Canadian Balanced Index will officially be launched later this year.
The index is expressed in terms of Canadian dollars and reflects the expected difference in profits between bulls’ progeny.
For example:
Bull A CBI = $250
Bull B CBI = $150
On average, progeny from Bull A will be $100 more profitable in a Canadian commercial operation than the progeny from Bull B.

Hometown was the top selling bull in the Gardiner Angus Ranch in April 2020 at $450,000. He is a bull we liked for his overall body shape and impressive calving ease numbers. Selling beef at record high prices also came with record high costs that needed to be carefully accounted foreverything from diesel and barley to boxes and tape increased exponentially. We saw a lot more demand this market season for secondary primals. This was very good for business and whole carcass utilization. I also had the good fortune to hire Kayla Barrett to run the farmers’ market booth this summer. She has a knack for being personable and remembering our customers and their preferences. We’re also grateful to Roy’s Place in Claresholm for being our biggest volume purchaser of beef over the last three years!
