Welcome… The wider Job families invite you to participate in marking this celebration of 50 years of breeding stud Shorthorns. Whether you join in at Royalla or join online by Elite, you are welcome. The offering comprises female lots from Marellan, Moombi and Royalla that represent the type of cattle the family have been breeding over the past years and that are still very relevant today. It has been a great journey with plenty of highs and lows over many years. The constants have been the wonderful cattle and the many friends made. Fellow breeders have been part of the Job lives, some for a comparatively short time and others for most of the journey. All have helped make up an enriching tapestry. There have been many ‘highs’ in both the show ring and the sale ring. The first Marellan draft ever put to auction went under the hammer at the Dubbo Unled Sale 11th September 1974. The 6 bulls sold to $1700 and topped the sale. Agent, Bob Berry was quoted as saying ‘ The quality of the bulls was vindicated by the keen competition from buyers in an otherwise flat sale.’ In the early years Marellan bulls were sold at Dubbo National Show and Sale, Dubbo Unled Sale, Dalby and Glen Innes where a very faithful following was soon established. On property sales have been established and Dubbo National participation has continued to the present. The past 35 years have seen Dubbo National feature in the family highlights. Top price has been achieved by either Marellan, Moombi or Royalla on 8 occasions, with 5 Grand Championships going to Moombi and SPJ. There have been in excess of 60 Royal Show and Beef Australia Grand Championships. Job studs have also made the headlines with Supreme Interbreed Championship Awards, winning the Hordern Trophy at Sydney Royal 3 times (Marellan Vagabond, Moombi White Lightning, Moombi Daffodil), the Urquhart Trophy at Sydney twice (Marellan Ferrari, Moombi Daffodil) and Beef Australia 2021 (Royalla Ventura). This is in addition to scores of other broad ribbon and class winners at Dubbo National, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Canberra Royals. Showing, particularly at major events, has always been seen as a means of giving back to the breed as a form of promotion. The combined prefixes have featured in many pedigrees throughout the country, a tribute to the influence Job Shorthorn bloodlines have had on the Shorthorn breed here and overseas over the past half century. Despite all these wonderful accolades perhaps the most important contribution of the Job families Shorthorns has been the widespread and successful commercial use of their genetics. So many commercial clients have reaped the benefit of using Marellan, Moombi and or Royalla sires in their herds. Clearly this sale is a not to be repeated opportunity, at least for another 50 years, so it is worth considering.
Any questions you may have regarding any lots can be directed to Marellan – Lincoln 0404 083 438 Moombi – Lester 0427 677 214, 63 677 214 Royalla – Nicholas 0428 298 767 or Neilson 0428 677 374
A Brief History In 1972 Allan Job and 2 of his sons, Lester and Neilson, decided to diversify from a stud Merino and commercial Shorthorn enterprise into stud Shorthorns. This commercial herd, was predominantly pure Shorthorn from Weebollabolla, Karoola and Gundibri bloodlines, and had been running at ‘Marellan’ for many years. The Shorthorn Society’s SFA (Special Foundation Animal) programme was the obvious next step to take. At the urging of the late Mr Arthur Haynes of Meriwong stud, Cumnock, 31 of the best pure bred Shorthorn females were selected to be presented to a panel of inspectors who considered each animal for confirmation, quality and breed characteristics before admitting them into the SFA register. This is where the incredibly successful Isobel family came from. These cows formed the nucleus of the Marellan Shorthorn stud herd. The herd grew when another two drafts of females were put forward for SFA upgrading the following year. Purchases from herd dispersals also increased the herd size. One of the most notable dispersal acquisitions made was from the 1976 Mandalong dispersal when the first Melody was purchased. The SFA inspectors included stud breeders David Fleming, the late Max Reynolds, Lionel Manchee and Charles Counsell, the latter making written comment that in his opinion it was an ‘outstanding herd’. It should be noted that Lionel Manchee was very generous with his advice and guidance to a new stud, an example that both Lester and Neilson have continually tried to follow. In 1978 Lester launched out on his own and formed his Moombi stud which was based on a portion of the Marellan herd. He and Sonya have run this stud herd since with great success and some incredible results. Their son Selwyn operated the SPJ herd which also saw great success at both Dubbo National and the Sydney Royal Show. Following the purchase of the ‘Royalla’ property in 1988 the Royalla prefix was registered by Neilson and Sue. Nicholas also took up residence there in 2001 following the purchase of the neighbouring ‘Glen Iris’. For some years the Marellan and Royalla herds were run jointly over the two properties. In 2008 purchase of the adjoining ‘Beulong’ saw Neilson and Sue join Nicholas at ‘Royalla’ where they now carry on the Royalla herd. There was a complete reshuffle in 2009 with Lincoln and Lisa taking over ‘Marellan’ and a portion of the herd. They subsequently transferred their Marellan herd to Emerald in the Central Highlands of Queensland where they have forged a niche breeding stud Shorthorns with high tick resistance. The results of their recent annual sale prove the value and success of this venture. Genevieve, who has lived in England for many years now owns ‘Marellan’ and the Nunyara prefix. Nephew Fergus runs his Crown stud from his base out of Dubbo. The Job family Shorthorn herds have used an impressive lineup of stud sires over the 50 years. They include Yamburgan Corker 35th, Yamburgan Corker 53rd, Waukaru Prime Minister, Meriwong Tamar, Kaluga Fulbright, and of course the great Weebollabolla Theodore. Numerous notable homebred sires have also been used over the years.

The Isobel Family
The original Isobel SFA cow was purchased as a commercial cow from the Simpson family's Gunnawarra commercial herd dispersal at Gulargambone, in early 1971. $290 for a dry cow. Also purchased were four cows with calves. The bull calves at foot were sold for $300. At the time we sold cows for between $75-120. She was an absolute standout to Allan, Lester and Neilson, so much that they just had to have her at about 4 times average cow price, or one bull. Either way, about $12-15000 for a no name cow. What a bargain! A number of years ago we compared an Isobel from Moombi to one from Royalla and after 8 generations they could have passed as identical twins. The type is just so prepotent. They just have that 'Isobel look'. This family has been the foundation and mainstay of our three herds. They are prolific producers of superior females and top breeding, high priced bulls for many studs. They have a proud look that has been maintained for 10 generations and more. There have been 8 Marellan Royalla Isobel females who have won broad ribbons at Sydney and Melbourne Royal Shows and 5 Moombi ones. Three National All Breeds Champion heifers. Our Isobels are in 5 countries as well as numerous Australian herds. Super Dazzler was the first Isobel Interbreed winner for us. Irish Isobel 38th was exported to the USA to the Ragsdale family with her genetics coming back to Australia through Sutherland Bundaberg. 4 major Interbreed ribbon winners, Super Dazzler, Vagabond, Ferrari and Ventura were all descendants of our original Isobel cow. The Isobels exemplify our female selection philosophies, breed the best females and the bulls will happen.

COMMENTS: None other than Ventura’s full sister. A great outlook here. Structurally sound, super fronted, style to burn. Should be a great breeder with this pedigree. We first saw the Margies in the USA in 1991. We thought they would be an
asset in our own herd. We subsequently imported embryos from Alden Farms, Missouri. We then set about breeding Australian Margies that better suited our conditions. Even though we gave each different embryo calf a different Margie name they all came from the original AF Margie 924. They have had a big impact on our herd with top bulls and females coming from this family.

The Melody family began for us when Sue purchased an Alice Downs Melody 10th and her calf at foot Mandalong Melody 8th at the 1976 Mandalong dispersal for $700. What an investment that was. Ric Pisaturo of Mandalong Shorthorns had an amazing ability to select females that would breed on and with this purchase we benefited from his unique skills. We are still reaping the rewards and have sold 6 Melody sons this year for an average of $24,000. One of the flush cows in Lot 76 is an 11th generation Melody and in fact both sire and dam were from a Melody. Alice Downs Melody 10th was sired by Gundibri Supreme 46th. Her grand daughter we joined to a son of The Grove Supreme 3rd who was himself line bred to Gundibri Supreme 46th, cementing some of the breed's great old genetics. This joining produced Marellan Melody 11th who is the forebear of some incredible animals including R. ZZ Top twice, DPK Melody J435 and these two heifers. 43

The Royalla Philosophy Our stud enterprise at Royalla has always been built around our female herd. Female selection is so much more than figures. We have always backed our judgement when selecting females to breed the traits we require. These traits include structurally sound animals with good head carriage and the ability to walk as well as good foundational udders, sound feet, and suitability for our environment which includes the ability to lay on fat. These animals are more likely to get in calf and produce a carcase of high meat quality. Most of these things are not expressed in EPD’s. The result of this stringent selection within our herd has lead on to achievements that have included top priced bull at Dubbo National four times, top priced Shorthorn bull at numerous other sales, Most Successful Exhibitor at 3 Royal Show Feature Shows, 30+ grand champions at Rockhampton Beef and Royal Shows, Hordern Trophy with Vagabond, Urquhart Trophy with Ferrari and Interbreed Bull Beef 2021 with Ventura - all sired by our homebred bulls. One of the advantages of the passing years is the ability to remember animals 10 generations back from the current one and the carry on of characteristics is extraordinary.

6 EMBRYOS from Marellan Molly 9042 (P), Marellan Molly 9037 (P), Warraberry Trita N286 (P)
LOT 74
All 3 donors calved in Sept/Oct, flushing to commence in Jan/Feb 2022. OPTION A. Selling the right share in the embryo production to collect (only 6 Embryos) from Marellan Molly 9042, Marellan Molly 9037 and Warraberry Trita N286 (P) using the vendors sire battery. Joining sires to be worked out between vendor and purchaser. Purchaser to pay pro-rata of collection costs. OPTION B. Selling the right to flush (6 embryos minimum) either Marellan Molly 9042, Marellan Molly 9037 or Warraberry Trita N286 (P). Purchaser to provide joining sire. Purchaser pays collection costs. Option B is export eligible. Never before access to 3 of our donors and our sire battery. Warraberry Trita N286, dam of Marellan Wow Factor (semen lot 80), and a cracking bull calf recently born. Wow Factor was top priced bull at our recent bull sale selling for $38,000. A super feminine female, with growth, length and a great front end. Back by 6 generations of Marellan and Royalla sires and from what we consider to be an unsung hero family line, the Warraberry Trita/Meme line. Marellan Molly 9037 (white) and Molly 9042 (red) are 2 young Nicodemus daughters of Molly 3195. Only because of this sale did we even think about giving anyone access to this female line. Their dam, Molly 3195 is no ordinary cow. She was introduced into the ticks as a young pregnant female. From a peer group of 52, she was one of only 2 to survive the next few years. Environment Survivability is at the core of our business model, and Molly 3195 and her decedents are leading the way. Our hard line approach to selection pressure is not everyone’s cup of tea, but it is orientating our herd in such a way as to open up incredible opportunities for our Shorthorn Cattle in Northern Australia. Early last year, on a very hot day, I noticed 3 heifers grazing in the middle of the day, well away from shade. I went down to see who they were, it was Molly 9037, 9042 and another daughter of Molly 3195. In terms of phenotype, both Molly 9037 & 9042 are moderate framed, clean coated, sound made young females with very good udders. Molly 9042 has the more carcase shape than her sister and Molly 9037 has more fat than her sister. Progeny of Molly 3195 continually rank towards the top and at the top for weaning and yearling weight, EMA scans and IMF scans.

FLUSH of buyers’ pick of 3 ‘Q’ drop females
COMMENTS: These are what we consider the pick of our whole ‘Q’ drop females. Q085 beautiful uddered, well grown, structurally sound, feminine female. Q214 from the great DPK J435, her 2 full brothers sold for $30,000 and $20,000. She had the misfortune to be born in a crushing drought and scored a recip with very poor milking ability. Weaned in November 2019 at 50 kgs she made joining weight of 360 kgs in October 2020. Q169 a top young cow showing femininity, correctness and style. Her grandmother was Supreme Shorthorn Female at the 2011 Adelaide Feature Show. A true representative of her line. Cows eligible to enter centre for export flushing from December. Cherie Family. One of our highly successful foundation families with 11 generations still going strong. It is of interest to note that our foundation Cherie was sired by a very muscular Marellan bull, 490 who was sired by a Weebollabolla bull from a registered Willow Park Dairy Shorthorn Cow who had a model udder and teat setup a trait that is maintained to this day. Weebollabolla bloodlines have had a long standing influence of our female herd. Pictured is Marellan Cherie 54 2269. A Theodore daughter who shows these traits. She was also Interbreed Champion at Melbourne 2004.

With 4 commercial operations bidding over $30,000. Wow Factor, by name and nature, is the easy kind to sell. He is marbled on the outside and marbled on the inside with an extra degree of rib shape. At 652kg, he had an EMA of 118 and IMF of 6.7% (100% grass-fed), study all the scan data you can find and see how many bulls of that weight can match that EMA & IMF data. Combine those stats with his 35kg birth weight and his northern survivability just adds to the Wow Factor. This will be the ONLY chance to buy semen.

Background pic is the actual SFA inspection sheets of the original Marellan SFA cows inspected in 1971, by Charles Counsell, Lionel Manchee & Max Reynlods. Interestingly, the family in 1969 wrote to the newly formed Charolais society to grade up the herd to registered Charolais. It must have been fate as we are still awaiting the reply.
