TRAINING TIPS with PHIL HAUGEN
OPTIMIZING YOUR TIME I had a call from a young trainer the other day with some questions about setting up a training facility and some of the suggestions that I might have for him. This particular individual is in the transition phase from working for another entity to going into business for himself. Whatever business you are in, whether you are self employed and working for the public by providing a service, or you are working for a company, an individual, or a corporation, the first thing you have to understand is that TIME is your most precious commodity not money. For years I made the mistake of focusing more on the money than the value of time. For example, if you had 24 hours to live what would be more important to you time or money? If you had a year to live? If you had 5 years? Now, I know that’s kind of a harsh example but I think it puts that question to rest for all of us. So, the same holds true for someone that is setting up their business to be efficient, or for someone that is going to work for someone, or some company. I have been self employed now for over 30 years and most people would think that the reason I have been able to survive is the knowledge I have about how to train a horse. That is definitely important but it is also just a part of why I’ve survived. I think to survive, thrive, and to continue to improve in any business, you have to be an excellent time manager. So going back to my friend, the young trainer’s question about setting up his facility. The first thing I would look at is how the flow of your training facility is setup, it’s all about saving
4
steps and being efficient with your time. Here’s an example; we always try to lead two horses at a time when we’re leading them to the saddle barn or back to their stalls. We always saddle two horses at a time if at all possible and unsaddle two at a time if possible. That easily saves 10 minutes/extra horse/day which in turn saves us about an hour each day. In a week’s time that saves 5-6 hours and in a month it easily saves 20-25 hours. That’s almost 3 whole work days a month! In a year that’s 240-300 hours which is roughly 30-35 work days in a year, that’s a month that you’ve saved! That’s a small change that pays off big in the saving of time which in turn makes you more efficient. Just think of that over a ten year period, the return is staggering! Any time that I can save just makes it so much easier for me to do the little things that it takes to help a horse to be its best. There are only 24 hours in a day and I don’t care if you’re Superman, when that 24 hours is over his day is over just like mine is. Treat time like it’s your most precious commodity and your business will grow and flourish like you’ve never seen it before. If you have questions or comments please feel free to contact me. Have a great month!

THROUGH MY EYES
CODY CUSTER -
Dominating At Each Level... Whatever you do, give yourself a chance to experience success. Don’t jump to the next level without dominating the lower level animals you are competing in now and if you aren’t getting that done, suck up your pride/ego and back off until you dominate. Know that going through the process for success is more important than trying to show your gonads and getting your ass kicked over and over. The only way to move to the next level and step into success, is to experience it where you’re at now. I see too many guys wanting to skip the experience of winning for trying to stay up with other guys. Every person is different in how quickly they will develop and have success but your strategy has got to include winning. Getting bucked off, more often than staying on, teaches you bad habits. While developing your riding ability your riding average should always be better than 70%, but I’d shoot for much higher than that before I moved on to the next level.
GOD BLESS Cody Custer

MEET the PRESIDENT by Ddee Haynes
Creek Williams
All Photos Courtesy of Williams’ Family
I have met a lot of people in my lifetime and I am usually a pretty good judge of character. The first day I laid eyes on Creek he was 4 or 5 years of age. He was playing beside the fence at a rodeo with another group of kids around his age. As I watched from afar there was just something about the little boy with the big smile and sparkling eyes. Even at the young age I could see a big personality and a lot of determination in the energetic little boy and I thought to myself, that little
10
guy is going to do big things. With that being said, I was not surprised the day I received a call from Kelsey, Creek’s mom, to ask if I could help Creek write a personal bio for an up and coming election. Of course, I agreed and was so excited to learn Creek was going to run for the National Junior High School Rodeo President. The National Junior High School Rodeo Association (NJHSRA) is a branch of the National High School Rodeo Asso-
ciation (NHSRA). Both were created to give junior high and high school students the opportunity to participate and compete in this unique and challenging sport. Although not recognized by high school athletics, the NHSRA/NJHSRA offers a rodeo program that sets high school rodeo apart from other varsity sports. Athletes compete on a scale comparable to collegiate and professional rodeo competitors. The NHSRA is an independent student athletic association, governing itself with
“When things get hard just keep on going, there will be rewards and great things in the end!” As quoted by Creek Williams out supervision of school administrations or assistance from tax dollars. Members are fully insured, supervised and guided by adult experts. Competitors have the opportunity to acquire scholarships and grants for continuing their educational careers. Creek, the son of Jordan and Kelsey Williams, is now an 8th grader in Weatherford, Oklahoma. Creek started his rodeo career seven years ago and has been a member of the Oklahoma Junior High Rodeo Association and the NJHSRA
for the last two years. Creek competes in team roping, ribbon roping and breakaway roping. In addition to rodeo, Creek enjoys wrestling, hunting, fishing, announcing rodeo events and spending time with his family and friends. When I asked Creek the reason(s) he had accepted the challenge to run for the highest office available in the NJHSRA he answered with no hesitation. Creek considers rodeo to be not just a sport, but a tradition and a lifestyle. He talked about how he felt it was important to the sport of rodeo to always respect the past, live in the present and to keep your eyes on the future. Creek stated that making things happen and carrying on the legacy of the sport of rodeo was important to him. He feels to continue the tradition, it is important to not only advocate for the sport, but also educate the people who do not understand the sport of rodeo. Creek stated with the popularity of rodeo gaining momentum from bull riding all the way to the ladies’ break-away roping, as a rodeo contestant himself, it is very important, for all
rodeo contestants, to conduct themselves in a respectful way inside and out of the arena. With all of this being said I am pleased to announce Creek Williams did win the election and was recently installed as the 2019-2020 NJHSRA President. During his tenor Creek’s duties will include: writing 3-4 articles, promoting the sport of rodeo and several sponsors on Instagram as well as representing the NJHSRA at events. When I asked Creek about his future after junior high and high school, he said his goal was to attend college on a rodeo scholarship and get a business degree. After college he would like to own his own business where he could work during the week and then be able to travel and announce rodeo events on the weekend. I have no doubt Creek will accomplish his current goals but many more along his journey through life! Until Next Time…….

Collector’s Corner
Authenticating Collectibles
When you have a collection of potentially valuable items, especially if they have some sort of historical significance, authentication is very important. Just to know your items are authentic, and not fakes or re-pops, is important even if you are not looking to sell. Being able to accurately know and represent what is in our collections is important. But how do we go about that? The first, basic rule, is collectors should save any documentation, photos and receipts from the original purchase if possible. When you buy an item, get a detailed receipt if possible. A detailed receipt from a reputable dealer is often considered a good form of provenance. If it is a historical item and there are photos or a paper trail of where it came from, this is extremely important. Sometimes however, items are inherited or come as gifts. But it is still necessary to write down as much as you know about what was passed down with the item and save it with the piece. The next way to get items authenticated is to find an expert in the field and reach out to them. Getting a letter or certificate of authenticity from a recognized leader, or expert in the field, is considered a good form of provenance. Talk to several if you can. Try to learn from them while you are at it. Another good way to get authentication is to contact reputable dealers and collectors in the area or field that your collectible falls into. These are often the same people as would be considered the “experts” from the paragraph above, but it is always good to get several opinions and dealers are often the ones handling items similar to yours on a daily basis. Another way, and I say this with caution, is to do your own research online. The internet is a wide and wonderful world of information. When you find items like yours, print out or save the information. However, I throw in the note of caution because you will also find a lot of misleading information on the internet. Every day people come to us and have an item and say they seen one “just like it online” and that it was selling it for $____ . First off, make sure what you are seeing online is indeed, “just like yours,” and secondly, remember that anyone can ask for anything online, that does not mean that is what it actually “sells for.” Or even that it, is actually what it is. I recommend after you do your research online, to take the information and go to a recognized expert, dealer or collector and and let them help you with identifying what you actually have, compared to what you found online. Why use an expert and what makes someone an expert? It is always best to find someone who knows 32
what they are talking about when searching for an expert opinion. However, you should know there are a lot of self-professed experts out there who looked at a few pictures online and now think they know everything. What you are actually looking for is someone who has handled a lot of those types of items in the past and preferably is still in the business of handling them. Not only handled them, but also has studied them. They have read all the books, talked to others who are recognized in the area of expertise, etc. etc.. I like to use the analogy about a guy who really, really, knows about motorcycles. An expert on motorcycles can tell the difference between a Harley and a Honda from a mile away. While the average person just sees two motorcycles coming. That is, until some of the obvious differences are pointed out. The expert knows the differences at a glance and can tell you the difference in price, collectiblity—and why. Offer to pay the expert for their services. It is the right thing to do. A lot of experts may not charge for identifying things or giving letters of certification (in some cases perhaps if they are doing other business with you or they hope this will lead to future business), but do not expect that. For example, if you take a car you are considering buying or selling to a mechanic for an inspection, wouldn’t you expect them to charge? When you take a horse to the vet for a pre-sale inspection, does he not usually charge? If someone asked you to preform what ever it is that you do for a living, would you not expect them to pay for your services? Most of the time, the answer is yes. So we should expect to pay an expert for authentication services as well. One quick note about “experts.” Remember that if you ask 10 different “experts” for an opinion, you will likely get 10 slightly different answers. And maybe only half of them are very accurate! That is just human nature and the way of the world with people’s opinions. So do your own research. Also research the “experts” and talk to the ones you feel you can trust. Sometimes it is a collaboration of several sources which gives you the best totality of information. Remember that in the world of buying and selling collectibles, provenance is everything. Especially with regards to the more rare and valuable items. The better the paper trail, the more the item will sell for, or will be valued at. So search out the history, get the provenance and keep it with your items. It is important.

Who is Our Lady Turquoise? She describes herself as “A fiery red head with turquoise fever who loves the western lifestyle, her family, & her cowboy!” Macklee Austin calls Arizona home. “When I’m not team roping or selling real estate I’m on the hunt for those one of a kind turquoise pieces. The kind of turquoise that becomes a family heir loom, being passed down from generation to generation.” Her best customer? Her niece who knows fabulous jewelry when she sees it, just like her Aunt Macklee! “My turquoise passion is explore special jewelry artist’s and share their beautiful custom pieces with my Our Lady of Turquoise friends. I am happy to share authentic. “one of a kind” pieces with my turquoise friends. I must admit sometimes it is hard to pass all of the beautiful pieces on!” All turquoise sold from “Our Lady Turquoise” is one of a kind and authentically made. She has provided jewelry to some of my
favorite rodeo wives and friends for the back number ceremony at the NFR like this past year when it was on Josie Buckaloo, wife of NFR qualifying Team Roper Bubba Bucklaoo. Macklee has a big presence on social media that includes Facebook, and Instagram where she offers weekly deals and steals. She often has trouble keeping certain items in stock because they are so popular. She also has those one of a kind pieces that magically roll around and get posted one day and are gone the next, never to be restocked. Macklee tells me though “If you have a specific style or interest please follow my Facebook page “Our Lady Turquoise” and get in contact with me, I will set off to find you the perfect piece!” Until we meet - may you have the grandest adventures -Macklee, Our Lady Turquoise xoxoxoxoxo Sierra Rae
