Genetics for the Working Cattleman October 20, 2012 Dear Friends, On behalf of all of us at Meadow Lane, welcome to our fifth Tools of the Trade, bull and female sale. We are very proud to offer this set of bulls and heifers for your evaluation and selection. It has been quite a summer to say the least! One of the hottest and driest on record, feed resources are at a premium. We have been working for years to make our cattle as efficient as possible. With low cattle numbers, good cattle will always be at a premium and we hope these genetics will help you with your goal of producing better beef! We have again tried to give you as much information as we can gather. The bulls were fed here at home this year with a 50 day feed trial from July 10 to August 29. We were pleased with our bull’s performance despite the 100 degree temperatures. You will find several pieces of actual data and EPD’s on each bull. We have also included our own scoring system to assist you. If you have questions about any of the data or cattle, please do not hesitate to call. The bred heifers are again the top cut of Jerry Crownover’s 2011, heifer crop. They would be Tier II Show Me Select females out of Meadow Lane Shorthorn bulls. They have been AI’d to top Angus sires and offer some of the best genetics available. We continue to be impressed by how well the Durham Red and Blacks do for us and our customers. Being the only British composite, they fit into so many crossbreeding systems. The Spring SimAngus bulls are some of our best ever. These bulls will be Spring 2012, calves. We will winter the bulls and deliver them to you in April, semen checked and ready for service. We feel the SimAngus bulls will really complement a group of females that have the Shorthorn or Durham Red influence. We are also offering a deep cut of our Fall 2011 replacement pen. As always, we offer a complete guarantee on all bulls sold. We only ask that you contact us before disposing of a bull so we can discuss options. The bulls have been receiving some grain and we recommend they continue to get 5 lbs. per day so they can maximize their growth potential. All of the cattle will be priced per head and a bid off will occur on those with two or more buyers selecting them. If you buy two head, either heifers, bulls or a combination of both, you will receive $25 off your total price, buy three or more and receive $50 off your total price when paid for and taken home sale day. Thanks again for taking time to read our catalog. Color photos and videos of the bulls can be seen on our website at www.meadowlanefarm.com. If you cannot make it on sale day, please call and set up a visit, we would love to show you the bulls and heifers. We look forward to seeing each of you on October 20. Please contact us if we can offer travel assistance or answer questions. Sincerely, The Bertz’s

Bidding Procedure
EPD Explanation Guide
In an effort to keep the process as simple and low pressure as possible, we have chosen to incorporate a private treaty procedure.
Calving Ease Direct (CED)- predicts the probability of calves being born unassisted out of two year old heifers. A higher number is better.
All bulls will be penned by age and price. 12 month old bulls will be started at $2250. Spring 2012 bulls will be priced at $2000, and $2250. This will be the base price for all bulls in the pen. Bids can be left prior to October 20, 2012, but will close at 1:00 pm CST. Upon your selection of bulls, please notify us at the barn of your selections. At this time you will receive a buyer number and we will post your number next to the bull or bulls you are interested in on the barn sheet. We encourage you to select all bulls you may be interested in. At 1:00 pm, we will begin the bid off in catalog order of those bulls with two or more people listed. If you are the only bidder you own that bull, at pen price, if you desire. If there are two or more people interested in a particular bull, the person signing up second has the option to raise the bid $50. If the bid goes up, the first bidder can then increase the current bid by $50 and so on until the bull is sold. Once you have bought the bull or bulls you desire, we will remove your buyer number from other bulls you may have signed up for. There will be no auctioneer, so you have plenty of time to discuss you options during the bid-off process. A color catalog is available online at www.meadowlanefarm.com. Prices and updates will be placed on that site and bids can be made by calling any of the representatives up until sale time on October 20. We encourage you to attend if at all possible, but would be happy to assist you by phone. We are offering a sight unseen guarantee. If we select a bull for you and you do not like him, you do not own him.
Birth Weight (BW)- a sire’s expected progeny difference (lb) for mature dam equivalent birth weight of calf. A lower number is better. Weaning Weight (WW)- a sire’s expected progeny difference (lb) for 205-day, mature dam equivalent weaning weight. Measures growth to weaning, not milk Yearling Weight (YW)- a sire’s expected progeny difference (lb) for 365day, mature dam equivalent yearling weight. Milk– the expected difference (due to milk production alone) in weaning weight of calves out of a bull’s daughters. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE)- predicts the probability of a bull’s daughters calving unassisted at two years of age. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWWT)- expected overall difference (lb) in weaning weight out of a bull’s daughters, indicating milking ability and growth potential. Marbling (MARB)- predicts the difference in average marbling score of a bull’s progeny expressed in tenths of a marbling score. Ribeye Area (REA)- predicts the difference in ribeye size of a bull’s progeny expressed in square inches. Back Fat Thickness (FAT)- predicts the difference in 12th rib fat thickness of a bull’s progeny. Lower numbers indicate leaner carcasses. Most Probable Producing Ability (MPPA)- measure of a dam’s combined weaning ratios for her lifetime, 100 being average for the herd. Ratios– measure of a trait against the average of a contemporary group for that particular trait. A ratio of 100 would be average, 95 would be 5% lower than average, and 105 would be 5% above average.
Scoring System Explanation Guide Calving Ease Growth Maternal
* ** ***
To simplify the process of selecting bulls, we have incorporated a scoring system. This system is for three basic economic traits: calving ease, growth, and maternal. We have utilized EPD’s, individual performance, and pedigree history to determine these rankings. * Average ** Above Average *** Exceptional Tools of the Trade Mating Suggestions In an effort to help you best match your bull selection with your cow herd, these suggestions are our best recommendation for what type of cows, heifers, or both, a particular bull will work on. Like the scoring system, we incorporated phenotype, pedigree history, and performance into these suggestions.

Each bull’s complete individual data is located in these boxes. This includes actual birth weight, weaning weight adjusted to 205 days, yearling weight adjusted to 365 days, average daily gain, scrotal circumference, frame score, percent intramuscular fat, ribeye area, and rib fat. Each bull’s ratio for each trait is also listed. For Shorthorn bulls, a birth ratio over 100 indicates less birth weight than the average for the group. For all other traits, a ratio over 100 indicates more for a particular trait. For all other breeds a birth ratio of over 100 indicates more birth weight than average. A complete definition of these traits is listed above.

Spring Bull Program Lots 8-14 are Spring 2012 SimAngus bulls born and raised here at Meadow Lane. We have begun a SimAngus program over the past few years with cows purchased from Melisa’s mom and dad Larry and Marylou Kinder of Parker, KS. They have had Simmentals since the early 1970’s and have utilized AI extensively. We feel SimAngus will work great with Durham Red bulls in a crossbreeding system. These bulls have been weaned, vaccinated, and have begun the performance testing program here at Meadow Lane. We are offering them for sale to be delivered to you after April 01, 2013. They will be semen checked, vaccinated, wormed, and ready to work. Their sale day price will be the total cost of the bull. We have based this price on genetic and live evaluation, feed cost to gain 2.5-3.0 pounds per day, and yardage. Insurance is available. We would like half of the purchase price on sale day and half at delivery.
Due to extreme drought conditions we are offering a deep cut of our Fall 2011 heifer calf crop. These females are all 1/2 to 3/4 Red Angus with the remaining percentage Shorthorn and they are registered as Durham Reds. This is a tough decision for us, but hopefully a great opportunity for you! These heifers will be wormed, vaccinated and ready for breeding or you can hold them over and add them to your spring group. The following lists their tag number, registration number, percentage, sire, dam, and epd’s. Highlighted numbers are those in the top 10% of the breed. Several of these are sisters to bulls working in herds around the country. They are priced as a group or individually. Please call us for more information or if you have questions. Tattoo

The bred heifers were purchased from long time bull customer Jerry Crownover at weaning and developed here. They stem from Meadow Lane Shorthorn bulls used on Show Me Select graduate females. These are Spring 2011, Durham Red and Durham Black females that were AI bred first service from May 13 through May 30, then exposed to cleanup bull from June 1 to June 26, 2012. The AI sires for these heifers are Connealy Contrast and SAV Final Answer. Clean up bull was Koupals Juneau 7206. Information on bulls can be found in the reference section. Below are their tag numbers, percentage of breeds, AI service sire, and AI due date. These heifers qualify for the Show-Me Select Heifer Program, their calves will be Tier II.
