Dear Friends, We welcome you to our 2021 sale with the knowledge that this has been another extraordinary year where we have seen the good, the bad and the ugly. The good has been, for us, the rain and more rain. The bad and the ugly have been viruses, lockdowns and those dreadful masks. But we at Royalla, have also seen the spectacular this year. Of course, we refer to Beef 2021 in Rockhampton where we were able to really fly the Shorthorn banner high with our bull, Royalla Ventura, winning the Supreme Interbreed Bull award. Lots has been said and many photos taken but for us one of the most satisfying things about it is that our 3 most prestigious wins in interbreed events over the years, the Hordern and Urquhart Trophies at Sydney Royal, and Beef 2021 were won by bulls that were by homebred sires. It gives great satisfaction. The ‘Q’ Spring sale bulls this year have had a really bad start. They endured desperate drought from conception to well after weaning. Their average weaning weight was 100kgs, and they were weaned on to dust. It was an awfully lean time for the cows and it is wonderful to see them enjoying our current abundance. Obviously this has affected all data but not the genetics and we have seen the cream of our genetics rise to the top. The ‘R’ Autumns have enjoyed a far better life. Once again we will be running the online side of our sale with Elite Auctions. It is a simultaneous format that we believe gives the user the most information. You will be able to see and participate in a live auction, see a video of the lot being sold as well as view photos of the upcoming lots and have the results of the previous lots. Please remember that to interact with Elite Auctions you MUST register well before. We would recommend you start a week before sale day and perhaps view an earlier sale to familiarise yourself with the platform. A heifers first calf weighing 37kgs. Melody N449’s pedigree is no mistake, she was bred by mating Royalla Pedro to his dam. Our foundation Melody, Alice Downs Melody 10th, was purchased by Sue at the 1975 Mandalong dispersal. Eight generations later this is the ongoing result. He has always run in the same management group as lots 15-25.

WEANING WEIGHT - ADJUSTED TO 205 DAYS Reported in pounds of weaning weight of direct progeny, relative to the average. Higher values are usually more favourable dependant on its relationship with birthweight.

BIRTH WEIGHT Reported in pounds of birth weight relative to the average. When selecting bulls to use on heifers, the economically relevant trait is Calving Ease. Breeders should focus on the Calving Ease EPD as Birthweight is already used in the Calving Ease EPD calculation. Lower values are usually more favourable.

GROWTH EPD’S

DOCILITY Reported as the percentage of progeny, relative to the average, that will record a score of docile. Higher values are more favourable.

STAYABILITY (STAY) Reported as the differences in percentage of a sire’s offspring that are predicted to still be in the herd at 6 years of age... given that they calved at 2, relative to the average. Stayability is a measure of reproductive longevity. Higher values are more favourable.

TOTAL MATERNAL Reported as pounds of weaning weight from the animals daughters, relative to the average. This is a measure of weaning weight differences relative to the combined effects of growth and milk. Breeders who are not looking to change milk production should consider Total Maternal as the most relevant EPD for maternal weaning weights. Higher values are more favourable.

MILK Reported as pounds of weaning weight from the animals dughters, relative to the average. Predicts the difference in maternal production of daughters relative to milk production and mothering. Values are relative to the environment of the production system. Low input environments should be very consious of introducing too much milk due to the increased nutrient requirements that it can place on cows.

CALVING EASE MATERNAL (CE-M) Reported as the percentage of extra unassisted births in first calving heifers, relative to the average. CE-M is relative to the Calving Ease of the daughters of the animal. Higher values are more favourable.

CALVING EASE DIRECT (CE-D) Reported as the percentage of extra unassisted births in first calving heifers, relative to the average. CE-D is relative to the direct Calving Ease of the animal. Higher values are more favourable.

MATERNAL EPDS

UNDERSTANDING THE IGS EPD SUITE

Accuracy refers to the amount a reported EPD can possibly change as more data is added. EPD values with higher accuracy result in less possible change for the value over time. More accurate accuracies better represent the amount of possible change for each EPD.

BOLT EPD accuracies will see the most change, usually lowering numerically and especially for non-parent animals, however the reported accuracy will be more accurate.

UNDERSTANDING ACCURACIES

ALL PURPOSE INDEX (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd, bred to both first-calf heifers and mature cows, with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put onto feed and marketed for both quality grade and yield.

Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ Indexes come in. Through well conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ Indexes blend EPD’s and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line.

ALL PURPOSE $INDEX - API

MARBLE SCORE Reported as the differences in actual carcase marble scores relative to the average.This is different to IMF% which is used as an indicator trait in Marble Score. Higher values are more favourable.

YIELD GRADE Reported as expected differences in progeny average USDA Yield Grade scores. Yield Grade is used to improve the yield potential of progeny and may seem a strange value for Australian animals. However, whilst Australian animals will never receive a USDA graded Yield Grade score, they will also never receive an actual Retail Beef Yield % value either. US Shorthorns however are USDA graded each year and so the pedigree linkages provide better linkage to actual Yield Grade values. Lower values are usually more favourable, however because of the negative correlations between fat and yield it is important to maintain some balance in the selection.

FAT Reported as inches of back fat relative to the average. Higher values are usually more favourable, however this is requires a balance between adequate doing ability in daughters and carcase fat thresholds for target markets.

RIB EYE AREA Reported as square inches relative to the average. Higher values are usually more favourable.

CARCASE WEIGHT Reported as pounds of Carcase Weight relative to the average. Higher values are usually more favourable, however this is relevant to each producers target martet.

SALE CONDITIONS

A Buyers Number System will operate at the sale. All prospective purchasers need to register.

Inspection: Lots will be available for inspection on Friday 13th August from 10am, on Thursday August 26th from 3pm and on sale day from 9am. Inspection can also be arranged at other times by appointment.

Accommodation: ROYALLA is 69km from Parkes, 52km from Wellington and 74km from Dubbo. All have have plenty of motels. The Royal Hotel Yeoval also has rooms, and can be booked on 02 6846 4003.

All bulls have been examined for reproductive and structural soundness as well as semen tested by Dr Ced Wise, who measured testicles with a Reliabull spring tape.

Health: All bulls are vaccinated with 7in1, Pestiguard and Vibriovax. Most bulls are blooded with 3germ. Please contact vendors for more details. All bulls are polled.
