Welcome Our family would like to welcome you to our twenty sixth annual Sale By the Sea in beautiful Pismo Beach, California. We may be biased, but there really isn’t a more beautiful place to have a bull sale than on the coast of California. Every year, we are committed to offering quality cattle, and this year we are offering an elite group of bulls. We strive to be innovative from our matings and combining our animals’ phenotypes to Igenity TCC,
EPD’s, and DNA – all of which provide great
value to our program and our customers. We are proud to be offering this elite group of bulls for your consideration. - T h e Te i x e i r a F a m i l y
Tea m w or k Makes t he dr e am work The success of Teixeira Cattle Co. depends on more than just our cattle. Without the help of family, friends, and our employees – sale day would not be possible. We are extremely grateful for our team, who make our dream a reality. Teamwork truly makes the dream work.
Many Thanks Without our family and employees, we would not make it to sale day every year. Thank you to Danny Quintero and Martin Nava for their continued hard work and dedication. Thousand Hills Ranch would not run without them. Thank you to Nico Menjivar, Brooke Minetti, and Emily Sonny for their endless support and hard work in preparation for the sale. Thank you to Tom Hill and Adam Teixeira, they have been extremely valuable to our program; making sure our customers are happy and finding out what we need to do to help them. Thank you to our niece/granddaughter, Madeline Ferrante Troutt, for her hard work with the catalog design, marketing and social media. Thank you to Sandy Murphy for her never-ending commitment in the office. She is such a valuable asset to our team. And thank you to our family for all the love and support. Family is what this is all about and we are extremely grateful.
To Our Customers Thank you for believing in our program and in our family – and trusting us with yours. Every year, our family works hard to offer a superior group of bulls. We appreciate your support year after year.
Quick Note For as long as I can remember, I have seen my family dedicate all they have to this business. I have seen the hard work and sacrifices they make to get to sale day. Teixeira Cattle Co. is their passion. I am honored they trust me with the task of building their sale catalog. It is truly a labor of love for me, and I hope you enjoy reading through it. - Madeline Ferrante Troutt Catalog photos provided by Alexander Thomas Co. and Madeline Ferrante Troutt

About Our Family Our family has been rooted in the agriculture industry for more than six generations, so for us, this is more than our livelihood. This is a tradition. This is a legacy we proudly honor. We recognize Teixeira Cattle Company would not exist without God and family. More than 25 years ago, John came to his father, Allan, with a dream of owning and raising show cattle. That dream quickly became a reality. John began working alongside his father as they built Teixeira Show Steers, which quickly grew into Teixeira Cattle Company, as their passion for the cattle industry grew. In 1999, the Teixeira Family purchased Thousand Hills Ranch, and the ranch became home to TCC’s herd. Teixeira Cattle Co. continued to expand and in the years following it became necessary to expand even more, so the family’s ranch in Terrebonne, Oregon was purchased. Over the last few years, John and Heather have been discerning the need for new growth in Teixeira Cattle Co.’s program, so they decided to move their family to the ranch in Oregon. It has been over a year since they moved, and it has been a whirlwind! They split their time between each herd – going back and forth more times than they can count. And who would have ever thought 2020 would turn out the way it has?! Despite COVID, they have remained busy and the boys, Nathan, Joseph, and Ben, have been extremely helpful around the ranch. Nathan, 18, has enlisted in the Army and is currently in training in Georgia. Our family is extremely proud of him! Joseph, 15, always John’s shadow, is now a permitted driver and such a hardworker around the ranch! And Ben, 12, is growing by the minute. He is our goofball and is always willing to pitch in around the ranch (forced, sometimes work ethic is a taught trade). Despite the craziness of 2020, we could not feel more thankful for our family and all that God has blessed us with this year.

EPDs Explained American Angus Association
PRODUCTION
CARCASS
CALVING EASE DIRECT (CED) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.
CARCASS WEIGHT EPD (CW) expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
BIRTH WEIGHT (BW) expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. RESIDUAL AVERAGE DAILY GAIN (RADG) expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic ability for postweaning gain in future progeny compared to that of other sires, given a constant amount of feed consumed. DRY MATTER INTAKE (DMI) expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of difference transmitting ability for feed intake during the postweaning phase, compared to that of other sires. SCROTAL CIRCUMFERENCE EPD (SC) expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires. DOCILITY (DOC) is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. It predicts the average difference of progeny from a sire in comparison with another sire’s calves. In herds where temperament problems are not an issue, this expected difference would not be realized.
MARBLING EPD (MARB) expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. RIBEYE AREA EPD (RE) expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. FAT THICKNESS EPD (FAT) expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
FOOT SCORE CLAW SET EPD (CLAW) is expressed in units of claw-set score, with a lower EPD being more favorable indicating a sire will produce progeny with more ideal claw set. The ideal claw set is toes that are symmetrical, even and appropriately spaced. FOOT ANGLE EPD (ANGLE) is expressed in units of foot-angle score, with a lower EPD being more favorable indicating a sire will produce progeny with more ideal foot angle. The ideal is a 45-degree angle at the pastern joint with appropriate toe length and heel depth.
MATERNAL
$VALUES
HEIFER PREGNANCY (HP) is a selection tool to increase the probability or chance of a sire’s daughters becoming pregnant as first-calf heifers during a normal breeding season. A higher EPD is the more favorable direction and the EPD is reported in percentage units.
GRID VALUE ($G) an index, expressed in dollars per carcass, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires.
CALVING EASE MATERNAL (CEM) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires. MATERNAL MILK EPD (MILK) is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.
MATERNAL WEANED CALF VALUE ($M) an index expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from conception to weaning. BEEF VALUE ($B) a terminal index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post weaning and carcass value compared to progeny of their sires. COMBINED VALUE ($C) an index expressed in dollars per head, includes all traits that make up both $M and $B with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd. *EPD definitions taken from angus.org

$ Va l u e I n d e x e s American Angus Association
$ VA L U E S Dollar value indexes, or $values, or a tool used to select for several traits at once based on a specific breeding objective. An economic index approach takes into account genetic and economic values as well as the relationships between traits to select for profit. MATERNAL WEANED CALF VALUE ($M) an index, expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences from conception to weaning with the underlying breeding objective assuming that individuals retain their own replacement females within herd and sell the rest of the cull female and all male progeny as feeder calves. The model assumes commercial producers will replace 25% of their breeding females in the first generation and 20% of their breeding females in each subsequent generation. Traits included are as follows: calving ease direct, calving ease maternal, weaning weight, milk, heifer pregnancy, docility, mature cow weight, claw set and foot angle. WEANED CALF VALUE ($W) an index, expressed in dollars per head, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from birth to weaning. The underlying objective being producers will retain 20% of the female progeny as replacements and sell the rest of the cull females and their male counterparts as feeder calves. Traits included are as follows (in no particular order): birth weight, weaning weight, milk, and mature cow weight. FEEDLOT VALUE ($F) an index, expressed in dollars per head, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics for postweaning feedlot merit compared to the progeny of other sires. The underlying objective assumes producers will retain ownership of cattle through the feedlot phase and sell fed cattle on a carcass weight basis, but with no consideration of premiums or discounts for quality and yield grade. Traits contributing directly to the index are as follows: yearling weight (gain), carcass weight and feed efficiency. GRID VALUE ($G) an index, expressed in dollars per carcass, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires. The underlying objective assumes producers will market cattle on an above-industry-average carcass grid. Traits included in the index are as follows (in no particular order): carcass weight, marbling, ribeye area, and fat. BEEF VALUE ($B) a terminal index, expressed in dollars per carcass, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics for postweaning and carcass traits. This terminal index assumes commercial producers wean all male and female progeny, retain ownership of these animals through the feedlot phase and market these animals on a carcass grid. Traits included in the index are as follows: yearling weight, dry-matter intake, marbling, carcass weight, ribeye area and fat.

I g e n i t y T o ta l C o w C o n n e c t i o n A few years ago, Teixeira Cattle Co. and Neogen joined forces to make our cows and bulls speak the same DNA language, which allows us to create an easy-to-read, custom selection index based on Igenity DNA testing. This program is called Igenity Total Cow Connection (I-TCC). We are testing our bulls with the same program with which you can test your cows. It provides you the opportunity to better choose a bull that will ‘steer’ your cowherd in the direction of your choice. It will also assist you in finding the most profitable females in your herd. We are excited to be working alongside Igenity to provide more profitable opportunities for our customers. There will also be Igenity TCC informational catalogs available on sale day or visit our website to download the digital catalog. On sale day, please feel free to ask us any questions about Igenity TCC. If you need the I-TCC full number breakdown on this set of bulls, we will have copies at registration. Please note: Due to things out of our control, the I-TCC numbers did not make it in the catalog this year. However, the I-TCC numbers will be available on sale day.

Tom Hill’s Advice Column Beef is King Change is an understatement to describe the last several months, HISTORIC is more accurate. With unforeseen hardships happening daily, the WORLD-WIDE protein consumer has spoken. BEEF is the preferred protein source in the WORLD. The BEEF consumer has literally chewed their way thru an extra million head of US fat cattle inventory. Beef exports worldwide are robust. Even while fine dining is still dealing with the COVID 19 circumstances. All I can say is BEEF IS KING! ANGUS is Cash The consumer has stepped up like never before to demand the premier eating experience found in high grading beef cattle. The new norm is for cattle to grade 90% choice. Select quality grade cattle are going the way of the DoDo Bird = extinct. PRIME grading carcasses are being paid up to a $300 to $400 premium over CHOICE. No MAJOR breed offers the MARBLING advantage found in Angus cattle, NONE, ZERO,NADA. It is safe to say if marbling genetics are not a priority in your genetic selection criteria you are on the wrong side of history. Trust me when I say the feedlots and packers know more about a person’s cattle than the producer themselves...and pay and buy accordingly. ANGUS = $$$$$ The TCC Genetic Program Creating genetics with superior bottom-line results is the TCC goal. While easy to say it is much harder in practice. Our continued due diligence has shown that some Angus with superior genetic merit just are not adaptable to the cattle environments found where our bulls work for their new owners. There is a difference in adaptability with gene pools...you do not see any Polar Bears in the Sierras, right? Every genetic decision weather purchasing a new donor, trying a new sire line is carefully evaluated by TCC before any action is taken. Evaluated by progeny review, parent first-hand evaluation, close out data on ½ sibs, etc. You can part take in the TCC program knowing that John and Heather Teixeira know everything there is to know about the TCC inventory. Additionally, the first person to usually answer your questions or share their opinion is the owner John Teixeira who is directly involved in every aspect of the TCC operation, 24/7/365. Teixeira = commitment as your genetic partner. SA L E B Y T H E S EA

ASA EPDs Explained American Simmental Association
EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (EPD): are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their p r o g e n y. F o r p e r c e n t i l e r a n k i n g s o r m o r e detailed information about EPDs and $ i n d e x e s v i s i t w w w. s i m m e n t a l . o r g . L i s t e d below are the units ASA EPDs are expressed in: ALL-PURPOSE INDEX (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) B A C K FAT ( B F ) : I n c h e s o f b a c k f a t . BIRTH WEIGHT (BW): Pounds of birth weight. C A LV I N G E A S E ( C E ) : P e r c e n t o f u n a s s i s t e d births when used on heifers. CARCASS WEIGHT (CW): Pounds of carcass weight. M AT E R N A L C A LV I N G E A S E ( M C E ) : Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. MILK (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk. MARBLING (MRB): Marbling score. M AT E R N A L W E A N I N G W E I G H T ( M W W ) : Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth. RIBEYE AREA (REA): Square inches of ribeye. S TAYA B I L I T Y ( S TAY ) : P e r c e n t o f d a u g h t e r s remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age. TERMINAL INDEX (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. WEANING WEIGHT (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.
41
OCTOBER 9, 2020
YEARLING WEIGHT (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. YIELD GRADE (YG): Yield grade score. $ INDEXES: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well- conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: ALL-PURPOSE INDEX (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. TERMINAL INDEX (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. USING API AND TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another.
