SWEARNGIN ANGUS RANCH

Production Sale

Welcome, Everyone!

Wow this is our 30th Annual Bull sale, where has the time gone? Tom started on this ranch at 15 working for the Shaw’s S-S Ranch. In those days it was strictly a commercial cattle operation that ran about 300 cow/calf and some stalkers. As Tom’s rolls changed on the ranch it was evident that bulls that produced cattle that worked in an everyday ranch setting were hard to find and so after many years of Buying and AIing wasn’t working, we started into the purebred Angus business. 30 years later the ranch has grown to nearly 500 breeding age purebred females and three full time family members. 2017 was a year of many firsts, Tom and Kim’s oldest son Gavin graduated from college in December 2016, married Sierra Morgison in April and became a full time member of the ranch crew. We had our first Red Angus offspring born on the ranch and are very excited about what they will offer our customers in the future. Craig Guffey, the third full time member of the crew, was asked to go on an Agriculture Trade Mission for the Kansas Department of Ag to Argentina in July, where we have started marketing semen on one of our Rare genetic herd sires Rito 707-974. While Grant, Tom and Kim’s youngest son was at KSU, but will fulfill his military obligations and is getting deployed later this winter. Kim Finished her master’s in Education this year! Tom says, “I have paid for three educations with these cows, and continued to build the ranch. It’s what good cows do!” What a great adventure life is! Never before has it been clearer in the cattle business to produce cattle that work efficiently in your environment. In My travels to South America this summer I met many cattlemen in Argentina that Ran Large ranches that shared our philosophies and very much understand that if cows don’t breed and stay in the herd there is no opportunity for profit! Dr. Guillermo de Nava, says it very well! “If a cow does not get pregnant, and does not do it on time, very few other things of its genetic composition matter. If the pregnancy does not occur, or may need many inputs to be achieved, the efficiency of converting grass into calves is greatly challenged, and that is precisely why fertility is the most important in the profitability of a cattle operation.” We are one of the only true fulltime ranching operations with no other source of income that produces genetics in this area. If you are looking for bulls that have the ability to produce cattle that work from a balanced efficient standpoint. Managed for continued growth and long term positive impact on a cow herd then we invite you to come see what we have to offer. We have a structured long term breeding program, not a member of the hot bull of the month club. Consistency, Efficiency and Homozygosity is what our bulls offer. The bulls are owned and managed by us every day of their lives until they go to work for you. They are not managed in a “perfect” environment, where they look glamorous and when you turn them out you ask, “What happened to my bull? And “Why aren’t my cows getting bred?” Videos on every animal in the sale will be available on our website prior to the sale. This year we are offering a select group of fall cow calf pairs, that will be exposed back to Maymont Executive 4392. We are ranchers, not farmers, so we have no corn or silage to fatten the cows, they will be in working clothes so adjust your glasses. Fat makes and covers lots of issues we find. Thank you for your interest, we look forward to seeing you Saturday, February 3rd at the ranch. Best wishes in the coming year!

Coleman Charlo 0256 This is the only current AI sire we used this year. When we select an AI sire first of all his genotype has to fit in our genetic parameters. Then we look for correctness of phenotype and thirdly his EPD’s are in an acceptable range for our environment and management. We have used this sire for 5 years and have produced cattle that have been acceptable for our operation we have 2 and 3-year-old daughters in production and are doing a nice job! Swearngin Rainmaker 340 This bull was selected to replace his father as our Maternal sire that pushes more power and size in his progeny. The females are extremely wedgy with massive vital organ capacity. We are using him with great success on the Rito 974, and 3XX7 Daughters. We are extremely happy with the results. We are extremely impressed with his muscle shape and total mass on grass and his oldest daughters possess that as well.

Here is the great combination again of 340/974/Emulation. Tremendous efficiencies! If you don’t have silage and grain just grass then look at these bulls. Efficiency at its best here! Remember 80% of the profit opportunity in cattle is in input costs. We make far more money on our high efficiency cattle as compared to the performance cattle, pound for pound.

This is a great sire we used and owned when he was young, and after using his daughters for many years we went back to use him again. His dam Lady 4465, was a headliner at Sinclair and produced many sons and daughters that went on to make a real impact. We have another herd sire that is a grandson of the great cow, Maymont Emulate 4392, his dam 06S3, is a Shadow out of 4465. Another real advantage with this bull is he was a leading bull at ABS for meat tenderness. Again we look for sires that balance our genetic program, not antagonistic extremes that are heterozygous and don’t breed forward consistently.

4336, is an exciting bull in that his dam is the dam of Sinclair Fortunate Son, (herd sire at McCumbers in North Dakota) and Sinclair Timeless, one of the leading calving ease sires to come out of the great Sinclair breeding program. Blackbird 2P8, is one of our favorite cows produced at Sinclair. We buy Herd sires based on their Dam! Then we try to find a son out of a sire that will work for our breeding parameters. 4336’s first calf crop weaned at 106% in our program and has been a surprise for us from a performance standpoint. He also brings with him excellent carcass value from his sire A1747. Extremely great set of feet and phenotype to go with this bull as well. His first sons are being offered this year. If you study our pedigrees, you will see that we breed like to like and in a specific order to get consistency! More profit is realized for consistency than performance alone. Cattlemen looking for consistent genetic value will find it in all of our bulls, not just a few. It’s why as you evaluate our bulls there is little difference in phenotype and in EPD’s within a sire group. This bull certainly exemplifies that proven to proven equals consistency.

This bull has done an amazing job for us as a calving ease sire with 77 calves reported in AHIR and a ratio of 100 for weaning and 104 for yearling. With that said you will notice he only has a 22 lb. ww EPD, and a 38 for yearling weight EPD and this spring as you can see from some pics in this catalog his calves average WW was 746 lbs. 219’s pedigree is full of old proven dead sires that the Angus association says they don’t have enough data on to let these types of bulls EPD’s move up to be comparable to Current sires…. This is one of many examples we can share with you of why we don’t put more emphasis on EPD’s for selection. At the end of the day the cattle either work and are profitable or they aren’t. Believe me, if he wasn’t profitable we would have sent him to town by now. BULLS SIRED BY TK CG RITO 219

When we studied his EPD like we saw in the earlier cows we had he is ranked in the top 1% of the breed today for Dry Matter intake, along with calving ease and fertility. SWEARNGIN ANGUS RANCH

Swearngin Angus Ranch Production Sale HE’S NO MORE THAN A FAT BULL! How many times have you went to a bull sale and seen bulls that were fat and pleasing to our eye and made you excited enough to buy…? When you took the bull home and turned him out on grass and expected him to be fit, athletic, get the cows all bred quickly and survive. Maybe our expectations were completely impossible, to begin with, sounds like an episode of the biggest loser. Today there is more data, pictures, and videos available on bulls and it can certainly be overwhelming. This being our 30th annual bull sale we have seen a lot over the years and the biggest mistake people make in selecting their new bull or bulls is not understanding what their environment truly is and has to offer their cattle. Fat bulls are great on sale day… then you take them home. Large performance is awesome, Breed leading EPD’s are fantastic and End product data looks like money in your pocket but they have to be alive first, and you sell at weaning. Here are a few simple truths of bull selection that will result in calves that are profitable at the end of the year… 1. Know your environment- What are your resources? What are the costs? What are you realistically going to do for your cattle? If you have grass and grass Hay to feed in the winter and you aren’t one who has the time and money to do a lot more, then buy bulls that have good calving ease and moderate growth numbers. Don’t worry at all about large performance or end product results, especially if you retain heifers for replacements. If you are a farmer and raise additional High starch feeds to feed your cattle, then you can select cattle with larger performance numbers as you will have the resources to help those type of cattle reach their full potential. Same with keeping replacements, most want to keep their largest heifers but they typically require a lot more resources to meet their production potential, their whole life. 2. Know what your cattle are. Are they crossbred or mostly one breed? Consistency and Efficiency equals more profit potential at the end of the year then most

anything else you can do. We have no control over the price our calves will bring on sale day. 3. Buy from someone you trust and that stands behind their product 4. Frame DOES NOT equal pounds alone!!! You Can’t Eat Daylight! Pounds contrary to popular belief are not a result of large growth EPD’s. Larger WW and YW EPDs mean you must have more feed to realize their added growth potential. Again if you keep daughters out of high growth and end product bulls you must have additional Feed past grass for these cattle to work for you. Keep in mind it’s our experience with these type of cattle that they have a shorter life span and more management issues than moderate growth more efficient type cattle after all they were bred to last 18 months until they are fat and ready for retail. Our Bulls are calved and developed with their dams on grass. They are never fed silage or high concentrate feed diets that convert the digestion process of the rumen from grass to High Starch and then back to grass when you turn him out to breed cows. We don’t give our bulls a perfect environment by which to maximize their growth before our sale. Our bulls are developed for the future on Ground brome/Fescue and Prairie hay and a commodity based concentrate is mixed in to give them a three pound per day average gain. The bulls grow well and develop their muscle without the added fat that causes a whole host of other issues. Consequently, they will be Lighter in condition which means they will weigh less than most other bulls you may look at this spring. As one of the only 100% full time family ranching operations selling bulls in this area, our bulls are produced by a cowherd that has built our ranch. Our cattle are selected and bred to work in our environment in the most efficient way possible as 80% of a ranches annual profit opportunity is in controlling costs. While most have chased end product cattle, they have created calves that need more feed to reach the same growth as our cattle do, not to mention

Swearngin Angus Ranch the amount of feed the resulting cows need to grow, breed, and produce the calf you need to pay her bills and rebreed to do it all over again. Here is an examples based on EPD Selection… Bull A BW WW YW Milk 1.0 60 100 30 Bull B BW WW YW Milk 1.0 35 70 20 Both Bulls should sire calves that weigh similar at birth but are different from the genes for growth passed from the bull to his progeny. However, these factors also control calf growth as dramatically as the genes from the sire. The cow’s genetic ability to transmit growth, Amount of milk given by the calf’s dam, feed available to the cow and calf, Environmental challenges, illness… all of these things and more have a far larger effect on calf growth then choosing a new bull with a large number hoping he will deliver extra pounds when you are not set up to help him. Milk is a significant factor to consider if you are retaining daughters for replacements. If You choose bull A then be prepared to Feed his daughters twice as much as the daughters of sire B, to realize a similar weaning weight. These are predictions of Genetic differences alone, not real world differences. One more thing to keep in mind is WW and YW EPD’s measure frame growth, not true base width and muscle. What we have found over the years is as we moderated growth EPD’s we increased true width, length and muscle pounds, therefore increasing weaning weights without added frame or EPD. The environment is a far larger factor for growth than EPD Alone!

the result of generations of grass based genetics that are culled based on their long-term ability to convert grass to pounds. Today we run an additional 150 cows on our ranch than we have ever run and they wean a heavier calf than we have ever weaned as well, on unfertilized pastures. Our spring herd weaning weight on grass alone and mom was 703 pounds and the cows have had no hay or supplements other than mineral for the last two years. Maximizing forage conversion to pounds of production with fewer inputs is our goal. As one of the only full-time ranching operations in our area, these principles are what has kept us profitable and building our ranch for generations to come. 80% of the profit opportunity today in the cattle business is input cost, that is about all we can control. Here is a story from one of our customers we sold 25 cows too last fall in South Carolina. The cows were hauled to South Carolina 2 weeks before calving. The cows all calved successfully on their ranch and today are doing well raising their calves as they would here on a different type of grass and hay. The same ranch also owns cows that they bought from a local producer that has been breeding cattle based on the popular terminal EPD traits. Extreme growth numbers and end product values. Those cows eating 20 pounds of grain a day to raise a calf that last year weighed less than the average of our calves weighed on grass and grass/alfalfa hay in the winter. They spent an additional $40,000 dollars on feed for their 80 head of cows to get 550 pound calves. Yes, $40,000! This is a fast road to Bankruptcy! Do you have a perfect environment to raise these “Elite” cattle? Or are you like us, raise cattle that work in your environment and take the $40,000 and buy another piece of grass?

Our Cow herd runs out on grass pastures year around. We never bring cows into a dry lot setting and they are never fed a high concentrate diet. Therefor our bulls are
