plus years ago, Kelly and I bought our first Hereford cattle. It’s been such a blessing to make so many friendships and to meet so many great breeders. So many great memories! Some great friends that we’ve lost; so many we’ve gained. We’ve been fortunate enough to do something we truly enjoy.
Looking forward with every calf crop, we’ve strived to improve our breeding program. We’re truly grateful for everyone who has ever attended our Dixieland Delight sales. To the purchasers over the past 40 years, I say “THANKS” for keeping us in the business and for keeping the dreams of a “Country Boy” alive and well.
It hasn’t been easy, but thank God we’ve survived the past 40-plus years. Please feel free to call us for any questions. We thank you for all you’ve meant to our program.
Looking forward to another 40!!!!
Thanks and God Bless, Randy Randy and Kelly Owen
“Words From Mimi”
I’ve witnessed our dreams come true when Randa started showing at age 11. What heartfelt years I spent watching her do what she loves and continues to do. Now the second generation has entered into our lives. “Oh, the circle of life!” Harper Rose is on the show road now! Poppy and I are so proud to be alive and watch her continue the love and passion we hold so dear in our family.
Always picking pens or helping out, Mimi
What a blessing it is to welcome you to our 40th Production Sale! Let this letter serve as your official invitation to attend. It is safe to say this has been one of the most challenging winters that we have had in the past several years, and just when we have a few days of spring weather, winter shows back up, not willing to raise the white flag quite yet. While much has changed throughout the course of the year— namely for us the acquisition of the entire spring-calving Shaw female herd, one thing is certain, and that is our focus to provide you with the most fault-free genetics we can. We are able to do what we love each and every day by the support of each of you. It appears we say it each year, but this is the best set of cattle we have ever offered. With it being our 40th consecutive female sale, it is also our largest offering to date. When we were presented with the opportunity to purchase the spring-calving Hereford herd from Shaw Cattle Company, it was an opportunity we couldn’t pass up once we saw the tremendous quality of the cattle in person. As Taylor Sheridan, the creator and writer of “Yellowstone,” said about his purchase of the historic 6666 Ranch in Texas, “There’s things that come up in life that you need to do, and some come up you feel like you have to do.” We feel, without a doubt, that the opportunity for us to acquire that set of cattle was a “have” to moment in our lives and an opportunity we could not pass on. We are very excited to share those genetics with you and to have them a part of our program. While there’s not as many in the fall pair division of this sale, it is loaded with quality and true sale features, including the first Merit-sired calves to be offered at auction. We are very excited about the future of Merit in the way his calves maintain very high-quality phenotype and possess EPDs not often found in the Hereford breed. He truly is a “rare air” Hereford AI sire. We are loaded for bear in our spring Hereford pair division. There are 74 Hereford spring pairs, with all but two having heifer calves. They will receive one service AI before the sale, so there is a strong possibility of buying 3-in-1 pairs. We don’t know where to start on featuring the spring pairs. They are loaded with the most notable cow families in the Hereford breed. There are several maternal sibs to Mandate, and several out of Mandate’s flush sister, the immortal 7201 female. The opportunities are endless, with many of these females needing to enter into a donor program. We are excited for each of you to see what we have to offer.
We are truly blessed to work side by side with our family and loved ones. Living and working with family on our cattle operation is something we don’t take for granted, and we are forever grateful to the good Lord above for the blessings of being able to do what we love. We can’t thank “Da” Roland, Nonnie, Poppy and Mimi enough for all they do here at TRM and for us as a family. Tristin and Chuck keep everything rolling at Lookout Mountain Genetics. Tristan Tilley and John Eberhart have stepped up to the plate in a big way with all the daily tasks that are too long to mention in this letter. It would take a book to write what all they do throughout the days and weeks here at TRM. We are truly blessed with a great crew, and without each of them and yourselves, we wouldn’t be able to do any of this. It’s said the days are long, but the years are short. Ranch life sure makes that statement ring true, as we work sun up ’til sun down.
Honesty and integrity are something we take very seriously, and our motto is quite simple: We raise the type and kind of livestock that are stout, sound and functional and can flat get the work done all while having respectable EPD profiles. We have never chased EPD fads and breed for a more uniformed, balanced animal that can thrive in our Southeastern environment. Everything we know about the cattle, you will too. Our customers, both big and small, mean the world to us, and we realize that without each and every one of you, none of what we do would be possible. We are forever indebted to our past, present and future customers.
Please make plans to join us Friday, May 5, to view the cattle, participate in a Hereford Women’s fundraiser themed “Cinco de Mayo,” and last but not least, fellowship. If you ever need anything or if we can help you in any way, please don’t hesitate to call anyone here at the ranch. We appreciate you and value your friendship more than you could imagine. We are blessed to call TRM customers our friends and colleagues, and we would love the opportunity to work with you.
John and Randa StarnesWelcome to the 40th Annual Dixieland Delight Sale at Tennessee River Music, Inc. The 2023 edition of the TRM spring female production sale is the largest offering to date and is a celebration of over four decades in the registered seedstock business. Once again, this sale features the best of both breeds here at TRM, and I hope you will join us for this “Red, White and Black” event.
I would first like to thank Randy, Kelly, John, Randa, Roland and the rest of the TRM crew for again allowing me to assist them in the marketing of this exceptional set of cattle. John and Randa continue to embrace their role as parents to Harper and John Owen and their management role here at TRM. With the help of their family and crew, they have again assembled a tremendous offering, and the presentation of the cattle is second to none.
This year’s edition of the Dixieland Delight features a tremendous set of Hereford spring cow/calf pairs that were acquired in their acquisition of the Shaw Cattle Company spring herd in 2022, as well as fall pairs in both breeds that continue the tradition of offering sound, functional cattle that excel in phenotype and individual performance while maintaining a strong genetic base with numerical balance and diversity. Whether you are simply adding to your herd, seeking a donor dam or a junior herd sire, or you’re looking for your next show ring champion, you will find it among this exceptional offering.
For those of you who have not attended a TRM sale, you are in for a real treat. This is a family operation and the hospitality and entertainment extended by the Owen family is like no other. They work very hard on the presentation of the cattle, and you are sure to appreciate their efforts once you lay eyes on this exceptional offering. Please evaluate the needs of your operation and plan to join us on Friday, May 5th to preview the cattle and on Saturday, May 6th, for this great event. Please do not hesitate to call me with any questions on either breed or if I can help you in any way.
Sincerely,
Matt SimsFORT PAYNE AREA ATTRACTIONS

OUR CATTLE RANCH consists of Angus and Hereford genetics, with an emphasis on quality in all facets from pasture to rail. The cattle spend the majority of their lives grazing lush, green grass before being finished on a grain-based ration to maximize marbling and taste.
We strongly believe the key to quality meat is comfortable, respected and humanely-raised animals. High-quality animals yield a high-quality product. We have a deep love and respect for agriculture, our community, our livestock and the land that has been passed down for generations here in Northeast Alabama. The Market at TRM was created as a way to share our locallysourced beef with the community. Our dream has long been to bring to families the same homegrown, healthy beef that our families have been enjoying for decades. We believe in all aspects of the cattle industry, and we admire and respect the versatility of the beef animal in all that it provides. We appreciate the opportunity to join you and your family at the dinner table!

• The donor dam of Lot 105 and third dam of Lot 106, Henrietta Pride 0533, is arguably the breed’s most impressive daughter of Bismarck and one of the most popular daughters of the 6-million-dollar producer Sitz Henrietta Pride 643T. 0533 has amassed progeny sales in excess of $650,000 on approximately 45 head and is still adding to it.
• 0533 was TRM’s $40,000 Lot 1 half interest selection from the 2013 Pollard Sale, where we also selected a heifer pregnancy from 0533 for $7,500 that developed into the $56,500 top selling lot in the 2014 Dixieland Delight. More recently, Brad Beharrell, Southwold, ON, purchased half embryo interest in 0533 for $22,000.
• 0533 typifies the blend of phenotypic quality, numerical balance and genetic superiority that we seek. This powerful female is a favorite of all who have seen her. The same body, hip, and power that has attributed to her dam’s popularity is instantly recognized in her flawless phenotype, and those traits are duplicated by her daughters and granddaughters.
