Texas Simmental/Simbrah Association A Proud Heritage—The Oldest & Largest Simmental Association in the United States The Texas Simmental/Simbrah Association (TSSA), originally organized as the Texas Simmental Association on February 14, 1970. It is the oldest and largest state Simmental association in the United States and is now celebrating its 43rd anniversary. The members voted to change the name to the Texas Simmental/Simbrah Association in June of 1985 to reflect the growing interest in Simbrah cattle in Texas. The primary purpose of the TSSA is to promote Simmental and Simbrah Cattle in the great state of Texas. In order to accomplish these goals, the TSSA cooperates with the American Simmental Association, Bozeman, Montana, which acts as the breed registry for the two breeds. The TSSA is currently involved in promoting Simmental and Simbrah cattle in a number of different ways. They include general advertising in monthly beef magazines and weekly livestock newspapers; mailing of promotional literature; maintenance of an exhibit booth at stock shows, livestock seminars, conventions and trade shows; sponsoring of Simmental and Simbrah shows and sales at the major stock shows in Texas; sponsoring field days throughout the state; TSSA bull tests and steer feed-outs; and the organization of the annual meeting. The TSSA actively sponsors area Simmental and Simbrah association across Texas, which in turn, promote the breeds at the grassroots level. There is a Texas Junior Simmental/Simbrah Association, currently made up of over 300 active youngsters. These enthusiastic juniors promote Simmental and Simbrah through an annual Junior Heifer Futurity, Queen and Sweetheart contests Junior Simmental and Simbrah Heifer Shows at stock shows in Texas and by sponsoring field days. The TSSA News is published monthly and contains coverage of Simmental and Simbrah events in Texas and across the country, as well as a current calendar of upcoming function and TSSA Approved Sale ads. The TSSA Membership Directory is published annually and contains a current listing of all TSSA member and ranch directions. Included in the directory are many attractive breed and related industry ads. This directory is highly requested and is extensively used, not only registered breeders, but also by many commercial cattlemen, who use it in locating their range bulls and replacement females. One service provided by the TSSA which has proven to be extremely successful is the TSSA Approved Sale Program. It involves the TSSA working with members at their production or consignment sales in the selection and preparation of sale cattle and the verification of individual tattoos or band and registration papers. This service allows potential buyers to know that everything is in order and they can buy with confidence. The TSSA also sponsors and manages sales through the year, including bull sales, which allow members to market their cattle and utilize the marketing expertise of the association. The TSSA can also assist its members in privately merchandising their cattle. The TSSA is a natural means of getting buyers and sellers together—an enthusiastic group of cattlemen and women actively working together for the advancement of the beef industry through the use of Simgenetics.

Since its introduction in February of 1979 by the Board of Directors of the Texas Simmental/Simbrah Association, the TSSA Approved Sale Program has grown to the point where very few Simmental or Simbrah sales are held in Texas that are not TSSA Approved. This program, designed to benefit those breeders who are holding a production or consignment sale, is but another of the many services the TSSA offers its members. The objective of the program is to assure buyer confidence at those participating sales. The goals are accomplished through the TSSA staff and directors working with the seller(s) in the areas of sale cattle selection and conditioning, and primarily, the actual inspection of all sale cattle for the proper permanent identification, whether it be a tattoo or brand. The registration certificates are then inspected to check that they are in order and that the identification number on the papers matches that of the animals. Any discrepancies can then be resolved prior to the sale, eliminating any future problems. In the case where an animal has not yet received a registration paper, a copy of the Herd Handler form is inspected and matched to that animal to verify that the animal's registration papers have been applied for. The TSSA Approved Sale Program assures the purchaser that all cattle are properly identified with a permanent identification number, and these numbers match the registration papers on the animals being sold. The TSSA makes no further warranties or representations, either expressed or implied, concerning the sale of the cattle being sold. Before a sale can be designated as TSSA Approved, the seller, in the case of a production sale, or the authorized representative, in the case of the consignment sale, must sign a contract agreeing they will follow the rules of the TSSA Approved Sale Program. Once this is done, the seller has the privilege of using the TSSA Approved Sale logo on all advertisements leading up to the sale. The program, which is conducted in accordance with the Suggested Sale Terms and Conditions as set by the American Simmental Association, proves to be beneficial to both the buyer and seller. From the buyer's standpoint, he can know that all paperwork has been checked and that the registration papers match the animals being sold. Therefore, he can buy with confidence at a TSSA Approved Sale. From a seller's standpoint, to ensure repeat business, the last thing he needs is problems with the paperwork. The TSSA Approved Sale Program eliminates that possibility and consequently aids in buyer/seller relationships. In a consignment sale, the program is especially beneficial because, in most instances, there are several consignors and each consignor handles his paperwork with a different degree of efficiency. The TSSA officers and directors are also available to consult with the seller in the areas of advertisement for the sale, catalog preparation, trucking arrangements following the sale and the proper handling of paperwork and subsequent transfer of registration certificates to the new owners. The TSSA furnishes sale lot tags, mailing lists (with buyers from previous TSSA Approved Sales) for sale catalogs or flyers mail-outs, the necessary forms to clerk the sale, stall cards, ticket writer and advertises the sale on the TSSA website. Plus the sales are advertised in the TSSA News which runs monthly in Southern Livestock Standard. The TSSA also runs an ad in The Register twice each year, as well as other publications promoting approved sales and listing the approved sales for six month period. All of these additional services aid the buyer and the seller as they take care of the small details in putting on a sale and they help produce a smoother, more efficiently organized sale. Since its inception in early 1979, the program has proven to be a tremendous success with every major breeder and all the area association consignment sales participating. For these services the TSSA charges 1.25% of the gross sale receipts. The charges pay for the TSSA staff expenses while at the sale, with other revenue going into the TSSA account, which is used to promote and advertise Simmental and Simbrah. So, even the charges for services of the TSSA Approved Sale Program are ultimately beneficial to both buyer and seller in other areas of their Simmental and Simbrah business.

The Simmental breed is one of the oldest and most widely distributed breeds of cattle in the world. The original herdbook for registrations was established in Switzerland in 1893, and the breed now makes up over half the population of cattle in that country. Simmental is second only to the Brahman breed in terms of world-wide numbers with total purebred registrations now exceeding 40 million head. Originally developed as a duel-purpose breed, Simmental were used for both milk and meat production in the European countries. American cattlemen, searching for faster-growing and more efficient cattle, began to import Simmental in the late 1960’s. As they infused these new genetics into their herds they found that, not only did they increase weaning weights by 50 to 75 pounds, but they also improved feedlot gains and efficiency. The females that were retained in the herd were early maturing, highly fertile and gave ample milk to raise a heavy weaning calf. These positive attributes have made the Simmental breed one of the fastest growing and most significant breeds in American beef cattle production. Ongoing university research continues to prove that Simmental-sired cattle produce carcasses that hit the production target for cutability more often than any other breed, and they are very acceptable in hitting the quality target as well. American Simmental breeds, using performance criteria and physical evaluations, have produced a trend in the breed of moderating calving ease, increasing weaning and yearling performance, while maintaining milk production and superior carcass traits. At the same time frame size has been moderated in response to the demands of today’s beef cattle industry. The American Simmental Association’s Sire Summary helps breeders make rapid genetic progress by identifying superior, highly proven sires in the breed. The Simmental breed has a diversity of color patterns that breeders have developed as a result of their environmental and marketing conditions. The breed, historically known for its straw-colored or red and white hair coats, now has purebred strains that are red and black-baldies, solid reds and blacks, as well as the traditional colors.
The initial development of the Simbrah breed occurred in the southern part of the United States and to a large degree in South Texas. It was there that cattlemen could see the benefits of combining the two most populus breeds in the world, Brahman and Simmental into one breed. Today, the popularity of Simbrah cattle extends far beyond the Gulf Coast region, and as a result it has become known as “The World’s Breed”. And rightfully so, as the breed does in fact produce “the best of both worlds”. The genetically divergent backgrounds of the two parent breeds enhances the strengths of each in the resulting product - Simbrah. The Brahman influence adds disease and parasite resistance, adaptability and longevity; while the Simmental contributes its strengths which include rapid and efficient growth, carcass quality, fertility and milk production. All these positive production traits are wrapped up in one package that is made up of 5/8 Simmental and 3/8 Brahman. The Simbrah herdbook is maintained by the American Simmental Association and thus breeders have one of the most state-of-the-art sire summaries in the industry available to assist them in making their breeding decisions. Members of the Texas Simmental/Simbrah Association have always felt that one of our strongest resources is the junior program and the quality of its junior members. Since its inception in 1973, a high percentage of the junior members have gone on to establish a successful personal and professional life in our society. The TSSA takes great pride in these junior members and has a strong history of supporting the junior program. A scholarship fund was started in 1988 by TSSA member Carlos Guerra when he donated the pick of his heifer calf crop. The Guerra heifer raised $12,500 during a progressive auction at the TSSAAnnual Convention and the scholarship fund was established. Carlos Guerra and the Guerra Family have continued their strong support for the fund since its original inception. Also, through a variety of fundraiser activities and the generous support of many Simmental & Simbrah breeders including member groups financing individual scholarships, many junior lives have been touched. In 1997 the Board of Directors of the TSSA voted to assure the permanent existence of the scholarship program by establishing the TJSSA Educational Trust. It is a non-profit entity whose sole purpose is to provide scholarships for deserving youth involved in the TJSSA. It is a tax exempt, charitable organization and all contributions to the trust are tax deductible. The trust is currently administered by three trustees, all TSSA members dedicated to the future of our youth. These trustees are: Warren Garrett, Canton, TX; Victor Guerra, Linn, TX; Tammy Glascock, Pilot Point, TX. And, of course, as the funder and continued supporter of the scholarship program, Carlos Guerra is often called upon for advise. Since the beginning of the scholarship program, over $100,000 has been awarded to junior members of the TJSSA. Scholarships are awarded to junior members in the names of long time supporters of the junior program in honor of their contributions including Jimmie Travis (deceased), Weatherford, TX; JoNell Drew, Hearne, TX; and Rich Forst, Chappel Hill, TX. Other scholarships are annually awarded and administered by the Educational Trust but are financed by families or outside foundations. They include the Victor Guerra Memorial Scholarship given by the Guerra family of Linn, TX; the Lytle Tom, Jr. Memorial Scholarship given by the Tom family of Campbellton, TX. The Educational Trust Fund represents a very successful program withing the TSSA and has truly benefited numerous juniors throughout the state with college scholarships.
