Awards Banquet set for December 18 Well, we made it through another year. The weather has started turning all winterlike, it’s dark when we get up in the morning and dark when we get home from work in the evening. The radio stations have been playing Christmas music since midNovember, so it must be time for our endof-the-year column.
in Multnomah Village starting at 6:30pm. This is German restaurant, so you might want to check the ORG website, as there will be a limited menu to order from, and it’s always nice to have an idea what you want to order. We will have the big room this year, so there should be enough room for all of us!
A few quick items: ORG and Cascade are holding their joint rally awards on December 18 at Otto and Anna’s Schnitzel Haus up
Big congrats go the RallyCross winners for 2010—I’m having trouble getting the results off the website today, so please check the full results are up on the ORG website.

I don’t have the overall Friday Nighter series points totals, but from the scores I have seen, it looks
like the series was hotly contested! We’ll be giving out the Adelaide Zink Rally Worker of the year award for 2010 at the rally awards banquet. I can’t tell you who won, because they might read this before the banquet, but I can tell you that this person worked very very hard for RallyCross, stage rally, and Road Rally all year. They are a volunteer extraordinaire, and very worthy of this trophy. Now for the equipment check department: be sure to review the rally rules for 2011 in whatever discipline you enjoy. It always sucks to be caught out at your first event when your car won’t pass the tech inspection! And in the “looking forward to next year” department, it looks like we’ve got a full schedule of rally fun on deck! The RallyCross department is hammering out their schedule; looks like we’ll be hosting a National RallyCross weekend probably in June. Stage Rally has Oregon Trail staying in May, and we’re looking at staying at PIR for Friday and in the Dufur/The Dalles area for the weekend. OTR RallyMaster Mike Nagel is raring to get back into the organizing saddle and, from what I hear, has some good ideas for fine-tuning the 2011 event based on what we learned in 2010. The Mt Hood Rally is still on the calendar for October, and we’re looking at adding some more stage rally events. Road Rally is aiming for our usual full slate of rallies, including our usual Rally Against Parkinson’s, and Cascade as always is gearing up for their Friday Nighter series. It’ll be a busy year, and as always, keep an eye on the ORG website for more info! Have a safe and happy holiday season, everyone!

‘Tis the Season…for? So the world driver’s championship for 2010 is history, the F1 international traveling circus has finished its rounds, and Sebastian Vettel is the youngest-ever World Champion. Kudos to Seb; he was almost always the quickest and the winner, whenever he could bring the car home. Except for a couple of mechanical failures, and perhaps some youthful errors in judgment, he would have won easily. Vettel will win, how many titles? He’s 23.
you have to guess out of thin air! And no…it’s not that each driver’s surname has six letters…as does your correspondent’s. It’s a little tougher than that. But, not that tough. Winners’ names will be published in the next Loud Pedal; if there are no winners we’ll reveal the answers.
Closer to home, it’s off-season for Oregon Region. Life goes on, planning for next year’s events. We’re working on our schedule for 2011 and have gone through several drafts; as you might expect the overall season doesn’t change much, with a start in mid-March, running through early October. (Continued on page 18)
Rally Drivers… Racers…
Our hopes were for Mark Webber, his RedBull teammate, the consummate Aussie whose championship hopes ran full, until qualifying at the final Abu Dhabi round. Twenty-ten was Mark’s best chance for the crown to date, and at 34, he won’t have so many chances in the years to come. But… let’s not forget his compatriot Jack Brabham; didn’t he win at 41? Alonso, maybe the best racer of all, lost out due to an unlucky pit stop strategy. He’ll be back. Hamilton and Button, 2008 and 2009 champs, were on the podium in Abu Dhabi for a one-two-three sweep by the most recent title holders. Back in America, NASCAR has also completed its championship chase. Jimmie Johnson managed a FIFTH consecutive championship, coming from behind at the last race. Denny Hamlin led into the final, but an early scuffle cost him the chance for the title. Kevin Harvick was in the mix and finished just behind Johnson, Harvick spinning Kyle Busch in the closing laps. Talk about a long season! Guess they do get paid pretty well for it… Brief quiz: Vettel, Webber and Hamlin… each has something in common with your writer. Send us an email with your guesses; the first three readers who guess all three answers will win a $10 Starbucks card. This is no multiple-choice exercise, either;

October Double Regional Races
The last double regional races of the Oregon Region SCCA season fell on a rainy weekend in October that challenged the determination and persistence of workers, crews, and drivers.

Bruce Wilson solidified his claim on the Spec Miata Championship, while Chris Jackson accomplished the same in claiming the Spec Racer Ford title.
Wilson’s season-long effort also earned him the “Regional Driver of the Year” honors at the annual awards banquet held this past month in Portland.
A complete list of class and awards winners can be found beginning on page 10, while event pictures follow on page 8. Complete standings and results are at www.oregonscca.com.

Welcome from RJ Gordy & Todd Butler, SCCA Area Directors RJ shared his vision for the future of Northern Pacific Division. He & Todd gave us some good information about NORPAC’s standing in SCCA. There are 114 Regions and 9 Divisions in SCCA, and ours is the only Division without a championship event or a meeting. NORPAC had the highest average entries per Regional Road Race event in 2010! Road Racing Stewards Gary Meeker commended the NORPAC stewards for a great job this year. He then discussed some issues the stewards would work on in 2011. Gary announced Jim Rogaski will be Chief Steward at 2011 Runoffs! Speaking of the Runoffs, there were 604 entries this year; only 18 of those were from Northern Pacific Division There were 533 workers in attendance; only 23 of those were from Northern Pacific Division Maybe we can have more in 2011! What do we market? How Do We Do It? Randy Unsbee, Loud Pedal editor, gave us some outstanding tips on marketing and obtaining sponsorships. He shared important pointers about how to market ourselves and why we should do it, especially during bad economic years. How to Run a Region in These Hard Times Representatives from Reno, Oregon, and San Francisco Regions shared success stories of how they managed to continue operating over the last couple of years. Of course, there were also some pitfalls everyone had to work around. “Give ‘Em the Pickle” Customer Service An outstanding video featuring Robert Farrell of Farrell’s restaurant. The four components of customer service: Service, Attitude, Consistency, Teamwork. There were workshops in Solo, RallyX, and Time Trials that I wasn’t able to attend because they overlapped with road race seminars. But feedback on those was very positive.
Please try to attend in 2011! Tentative date is October 29 at the Atlantis, Reno. It was definitely worth the trip! Karen McCoy 13

Tire Rack Street Survival by Jim Weidenbaum The Oregonian recently ran a front-page article talking about declines in auto-related deaths in the state. Buried at the end of the article was a caveat: the rate of fatalities fell among all categories of drivers – except for teens!
es, Chuck Jarvie served as Safety Steward, Win Casey manned the gate, Kathy Weidenbaum worked registration in the tower, and 20 driving instructors provided one-on-one in-car student instruction. Tire
Students, driving their own vehicles, run through driving exercises, with an experienced instructor in the passenger seat, until the new skill becomes second nature.
Fortunately, there is a group of dedicated volunteers within the SCCA and Friends of PIR (FOPIR) who are working hard to change that last, unfortunate statistic.
Driving drills include: • ABS/threshold braking exercise allows students to feel what happens when they stand on their brakes at highway speeds
Bright and early on an October Sunday morning, a crew of 25 volunteers from SCCA Solo2, SCCA Club Racing, and other FOPIR affiliated clubs came together to put on an all day Tire Rack Street Survival event for 26 young drivers. This fall’s Tire Rack Street Survival event was the fifth held at PIR since the program was introduced into the Region in 2008. The program seems to get better each time: Gary Bockman provides simply outstanding classroom instruction, Andy Howe set up the varied driving exercis-
Our resident driving sage, Gary Bockman, describes in easy to understand language, the what’s and why’s of car control. These classroom lessons are immediately reinforced by real world driving drills.
• Car control exercise using a slalom course, initially run with generous spacing, then with tighter spacing to expose students to feel the car’s suspension “rotate” under power
Rack Street Survival offers a terrific combination of classroom learning combined with in-car learning.
• Maximum braking while turning exercise – shows students that they can maintain control of their vehicle under maximum braking, enabling them to steer around an object versus fixating on it (and hitting it) •

Emergency lane change exercise (single and double lane changes) teaches students how to maintain control if at the last minute they need to swerve at speed • Skid control – running a wet skid pad both clockwise and counter-clockwise allows students to see how their car responds at the limit – does it understeer or oversteer – and how to control it
Survival possible. Tire Rack Street Survival’s 2011 schedule will be set after consulting with tentative 2011 Club racing dates, Solo2 Regional racing schedules, PCA/BMWACA HPDE events, SAT test dates, homecoming activities, and zodiac signs.

• Combined driving drill (don’t call it an autocross, although it really looks like one) to pull all of the day’s learning together Street Survival is a great program … and at $75 for the day, including lunch and an SCCA membership, it’s an amazing value. The low price is only possible due to an all-volunteer local effort and the generous underwriting of the SCCA Foundation, BMWCCA Foundation, and Tire Rack. Every Tire Rack Street Survival event is evaluated by students and parents; we consistently score over 9 on a 10 scale by both groups. Street Survival does fall critically short in an important way: it needs greater community awareness. Our October event could have easily accommodated another dozen students, but we had no more takers. Oregon Region SCCA: we need your help! As members of the Oregon “car guy and gal” community, please talk up Street Survival among friends and family with young drivers (15 – 24).

Do you think (s)he knows what to do … or do you know (s)he knows exactly how to handle it? I urge you to sign up your kids for a future Street Survival (www.streetsurvival.org) class and/or attend Todd Harris’ Pro Drive program and equip your young driver with potentially life saving driving skills before they are needed.

(Continued from page 5) We’re working on an event at Oregon Raceway Park again, and at this writing there are still a couple of asterisks on
the schedule, but it’s pretty well finished. We’ll post it and publish it in these pages, as soon as practical. Rose Cup weekend is, relatively, a week later than in recent years; that much we know.
Tough times demand tough decisions. Thank you to all of my friends and customers that have made the decision to keep club racing alive, and have continued to support Competition Motorsports at the shop and at the track.

Whether low entry counts are the result of economic conditions or lack of interest, no one knows. The first is out of our hands; the second bears hearing. During the year we were talking with drivers and working with ideas to improve our race weekends, and for 2011 are proposing a number of changes to our race weekends.

Our entry counts at the end of 2010 fell right off a cliff. We were caught by surprise, frankly, as the September and October events have been fairly strong in recent years. Did you all want to run straight through, the “no chicane” course?

The plan is, our “standard” weekend event for 2011 will be a two-day double regional. These will be structured so that one regional will run on Saturday, one on Sunday; a driver can enter Sunday’s event if he/she has other (family) plans on Saturday, for example. Each weekend will feature 100 minutes of track time; and a “one-day” entry will be available at a reduced cost.

To make this happen, we plan to change our race groups to combine existing run groups into a “six race” format. In recent years we have normally run seven race groups; combining into six groups gives us the flexibility to run two regionals in a two-day weekend. Initially, we will combine groups 6 and 7, just as we have combined groups 2 and 4 in the past; different groups may be combined depending on entry counts as the year progresses; but we expect that six run groups will be the norm.
ends for March (due to the licensing school); for May (Regional/National or Rational); June, (Rose Cup); and July (double National) as these events demand more track time. We’re planning to run the two-day events whenever possible, because the Fridays are tougher for drivers and workers. We’re eager for next season! As always, thanks to all our chiefs and workers for the
camaraderie, good spirit and hard work that we enjoy and appreciate. We look forward to the future. Happy Holidays! Please email or call if you have opinions, comments, suggestions…or complaints… More comments or questions? 541 788 2797 or jmmurrayjr@aol.com - aloha -
The goal is to improve scheduling, make more use of our track time (fewer groups means fewer breaks), and give more racing opportunities to our drivers. The group combinations may be adjusted depending on demand and entry counts by run group. Any combinations, of course, will conform to GCR and will be approved by the stewards. We would maintain three-day race week-
