Round Two of the Oregon Region SCCA Road Racing Championship Photos by George “Ken� Dwinell
by Randy Unsbee, ABC Round #2 of the Oregon Region SCCA Road Racing Championship was held April 18 at Portland International Raceway, with several drivers and teams solidifying their positions in class championships early on in the nine-race season. Gary Bockman won the Spec Miata nine-lap sprint race but Ken Sutherland reigned supreme in the feature over Bruce Wilson and Bockman in the 14-car field. Ken led the final six laps. Wilson leads the class standings over Sutherland, Bockman, Thomas Ferrara, Jason Rawlins and 16 other drivers. Chris Jackson tuned up for his upcoming trip to Laguna Seca with victories in both the Spec Racer Ford Group 5 sprint and feature. John Tipton leads the championship standings over Steve Fogg, Jackson, Dan Halloran, Johnny Humphreys and
15 other competitors. Wade Carter was first overall in Group 2 with his Formula Atlantic in both the sprint and feature races, while S2 saw Ernest Spada Jr. lead Larry Bergman and Tom Hendrickson across the finish line. They also hold the top three points positions in that order. Thomas Hamilton led Kenn Atkinson to the checkered in DSR.
Ron Tanner edged Frank McKinnon for the sprint race overall win in Group 7, while they swapped overall finishing positions in the feature, as Sean Hedrick claimed the ITA win over Jim Graffy in the feature. Mike Adams leads the ITS standings, followed by Tanner, August Macbeth, Matt Chambers and four other drivers.
David Cormier was first overall in the Group 3 sprint and feature races over Monte Shelton and Greg Pierson. Cormier again dominated the Group 6 races while John Davies was first in A Sedan and Barrett Smith won the SP911 feature. Doug Russell leads the SP911 title race ahead of Jim Bushnell, Smith, and Steve Gilmore. Cromier leads in the PCA1 standings and is second to Shelton in the SPO point standings.
The Vintage sprint race saw David Rugh win overall and take the VFSR class victory, while VP3 was won by Norman Daniels, Ward Barbour claimed VP1 with his Mini, and Paul Sundermier claimed VP2. The Vintage feature race was a mirror image of the sprint round for the victors. Complete results and lap charts are available online at www.mylaps.com.

Workers rule and ride! Elsewhere in the Loud Pedal is a big “thank you” to the drivers who offered rides to workers on the April weekend; there were 17 riders in 6 cars in 30 minutes. The Spec Miata drivers led the way, joined by one loud Civic.

WHAT A GREAT RIDE! by Karen McCoy The drivers of Oregon Region did something especially nice for the workers during our April race weekend! They outfitted their cars with passenger seats & took any willing and brave workers who dared for three laps around PIR during the lunch hour. Now mind you, these laps were supposed to be at 8/10 speed, but I swear it felt like we were on the ragged edge of flying off to the golf course— and I was ready to yell “fore!” any time! I rode with Ken Sutherland, #94 SM. He instructed me to give a “thumbs up” for OK and a “thumbs down” to go slower. I really tried not to give a thumbs down, I really did. But, Todd had asked me not to throw up in his helmet, and I was pretty sure Ken didn’t want me to wet his seat, so I had no other choice but to give him the “slower” signal on the second lap. When we arrived back in the hot pits, Ken asked if I had checked every flag station to see if they were displaying any flags for us. I couldn’t say either way because my eyes were closed for most of the ride. Oh well, I hope whatever flags they may have displayed weren’t too important! Thank you to the drivers who took the time and made the effort to provide the thrills—installing a passenger seat in a Miata that already has a roll cage is not an easy task, by the way. Not to mention, these guys would probably have spent the time prepping their cars for qualifying or eating lunch themselves. A couple of drivers even came out just to give rides when they weren’t even planning to race this weekend!

It’s Rally Time!!! But first, let’s recap last month’s events before looking forward to this month’s fun and games. We had a RallyCross on the 18th of April. The weather was perfect—slight high overcast, sun, not too warm and not too cold. The All Wheel Drive classes were running in the morning and we had a good turn-out, with 4 runs completed and a minimum of fuss and watering of the course. We set up the big screen TV hooked up to a computer and showed the constantlyupdated scores. The live scoring is a big hit, and we had a near-constant audience of competitors and spectators alternately watching the action and checking the scores. The afternoon session consisted of the 2-Wheel Drive classes and was as well attended, somewhat unusually, as the morning session. It seems like we have more 2WD competitors this year than we have had in the past, which is always wonderful to see! We had to water more frequently in the afternoon than in the morning, but our watering crew timed things perfectly and there didn’t seem to be many complaints. That’s not to say the day went off without a hitch—so I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of a couple of things. 1—We rent the field from the Washington County Fairgrounds. We pay them money to be able to run our events on their land. If you are screwing around doing cookies in their gravel lot, they think you are with us and then we get the heat for it. That means that you are endangering our program. NOT COOL, people. The same thing goes for those of you who come back after we shut down and clean up for the day. The Fairgrounds put up that fence and the ‘No Trespassing’ signs for a reason, and you are going to make it so we can’t come back to play. SEVERELY NOT COOL.
2—34th Street, which runs between our field and the rest of the Fairgrounds, is a public street with a speed limit of 25 MPH.
Hopefully we won’t have further problems and we plan on expanding on the driver’s meeting as well as taking roll of the worker positions before starting the runs.
It is not your personal drag strip. You will get ticketed, we let the county sheriff’s office and local police know when we are out there doing our events. Grow up, do your competing around the cone course and obey all traffic laws when you leave.
Our next RallyCross event is on May 30 out at the Washington County Fairgrounds. I believe the 2WD classes run in the morning and AWD classes run in the afternoon—you can compete practically all day, though, as we do reverse the course for the afternoon session. Remember to bring plenty of water, food, sunscreen, and appropriate clothes! Morning registration is at 8am per usual.
3—We utilize the ‘run-work’ concept: we split each session into two run groups and when the first group is competing, the second group is working and then we switch. Everyone is assigned to a worker position, and if you don’t show up to that worker position, it can delay or even completely stop competition while the organizers scramble to fill your position. If enough people follow your lead, then no one gets to compete. You know who you are—we have a list, and you will not be allowed to compete at the next event you show up for. We are considering rewriting that section of our supplemental regulations to disqualify you for the day and zero out your points. YOU DON’T WORK, YOU DON’T COMPETE. The End.

Absent: Jim Murray CALL TO ORDER – RE Dan called the meeting to order at 6:55 REGIONAL EXECUTIVE INTRO – Dan welcomed those members not on the BOD to the meeting. MEMBER/NEW BUSINESS COMMENTS – None COMMITTEE & OFFICIALS REPORTS REGIONAL OFFICE REPORT – Karen reported 108 hours worked last month. She felt that the April event was shaping up well and should have good entries. TREASURER REPORT – Carrie advised that she has searched several banking institutions for a favorable rate of return on the monies being held in the properties acct. Finding none, at this time she felt that we should keep it where it is until we appropriate it for use. She also reported that the signers on our accounts should be reviewed and updated if necessary. Karen will check on this and secure any needed signatures. LOUD PEDAL REPORT – Randy has the latest issue off to the printer. This issue is 24 pages and will be on a heavier stock paper. We will see if this survives the mail better than that previously used. On the issue of the web site Randy feels that the need is to better organize the content and put them into separate links. He also felt that we should not offer, “banner lines” without cost to the owner. Randy will work with any present banner line owners on the whys of their removal. Karen asked for a volunteer to take over the responsibility of the web site as her involvement was only meant until a new web master could be located. Chris Hale, Our current Rally Director volunteered to use his IT background to post and keep it organized. He will not be responsible for securing content, his role will be to organize and post content, once provided to him. BIG THANKS TO CHRIS! DIRECTOR’S REPORTS SOLO II REPORT – Andy reported that the weather was not the best for their first event but taking that into consideration he was pleased with the turnout. He used this weekend to test out sound levels and had several variances that he felt may have been comprised by the inclement weather. Their next outing will be April 24/25. Saturday will be the annual novice school with Sunday hosting the points portion of the weekend. RALLY REPORT – Chris talked about the first Rally X of the year that had 120 competitors slipping and sliding about. This included several newbies, which is encouraging. A new scoring system made its debut this weekend and allowed competitors to check their scores on their compatible phones and others track buddies on the web at home. The Road Not Taken has been canceled but Oregon Trail is moving ahead for the May 14/16 weekend. Start at PIR and move up into the gorge with an after race party in Dufur. DIRECTOR I REPORT – No report DIRECTOR II REPORT – Kim advised that The Shilo Inn on Airport Way has been reserved for the annual, end of the year awards banquet. Special pricing will accommodate all workers with more info on this at a later date. Watch the LP for info on this. Kim talked about The Kenton Street Fair, which will be held on May 22nd from 10 – 6. This will celebrate the No. Portland neighborhood with bands, car show
etc. Booths are available for $25 and she feels that we might benefit from participating. She suggested that we might join with FOPIR or another club on this. Kim will try to find responsible parties if we are interested. ROAD RACING REPORT – Absent report via e-mail: The March race weekend enjoyed excellent weather. We had a successful school (many thanks to Brian Towey and Bruce Wilson) with 20 students completing novice license requirements. Drivers were vocal in their appreciation of the school. There was a large Miata contingent. Notably, experienced instructors ran in tandem and randomly with the students, which contributed greatly to the students’ learning. The open wheel group was small due to late fallout of at least one SRF and a formula car, leaving only a single SRF and FV vintage car. The Vee experienced problems and ultimately was withdrawn; the remaining cars had more than enough track time to complete their school requirements. For next year it might be preferable to eliminate an open wheel group as there have been few takers, and SRFs can run with closed-wheel cars. Don Smethers has made recommendations along this line and we will need to evaluate before next year’s school. Entry count was 89 for the weekend; we had budgeted 90. Beginner’s luck. Race revenue was $25,540; budget was $24,300. We also had $1,063 in worker fund donations against a budget of $1,500. Last year’s numbers (which were for a comparable weekend) were: $23,415 race revenue plus $450 late entry for $23,865 total; worker fund donations $840. There were other miscellaneous revenue items but in general, we were a little better than budget, and a little better than last year. I have not seen the expense column yet, but have no knowledge of anything other than normal costs per budget. We have everything in place (including a sanction) for the FasTEST licensing program which is set to run in April on the Pro Drive test day; but at this point have no potential students, as this is written on
April 2. Karen may have more information. Also on the April weekend we plan to make awards to drivers using Sunoco fuel according to the Sunoco sponsorship; this has been written into the upcoming Loud Pedal. We are working on details as to the specifics of making the awards on the Sunday, by a random drawing of those entered; so everyone who enters and uses the Sunoco fuel can win. Schedules are complete for May and sanction (I believe) received; entries are open. Rose Cup schedule has been completed as well with much input from all concerned. Per PRFF’s wishes, Rose Cup race is an invitational of essentially the Group 3 cars; an extensive mailing list was derived to solicit entries. The objective is to get a large field of big-bore cars for fan interest. The race is set for 45 minutes. PAST REGIONAL EXEC – Proud father announced that new driver Katy, (his daughter) has found Rally X…..it pleases him to note that this is 3rd generation for his family’s involvement in SCCA. ASST REGIONAL EXEC - Dan was saddened to report the loss of Bruce Goronsky of San Francisco Region. Dan was both a friend and a fellow competitor. The first NorPac Vintage event will be Memorial Day weekend at Pacific Raceways with the next one being Rose Cup on June 11/13. Dan mentioned that he and Kim have been using Facebook, Twitter etc. to try to recruit new members to bolster our ranks. These are targeted at those interested in working and driving. REGIONAL EXEC – Dan has not heard back from Mark on the final decision for us to move forward with building a coop BBQ on site at PIR. He will see if Mark would attend one of our BOD meetings as a guest and bring us up to date on the master plan for PIR and what it will mean to racing and perhaps then advise on the BBQ.
