MANAGERS NOTES GREGORY VIGNAL

Welcome to our home game at The Hummel Training Centre against Glasgow Girls. It was frustrating to have last Sunday’s game abandoned because of the rain but we can’t do anything about the weather so now we are focused on today’s game. We have prepared really well this week and are looking forward to the game. Last Sunday it was really difficult to play in the weather with the rain and wind so it was difficult to keep the ball on the ground and we had to use long balls and that is what I said to the girls after the game. It should be the same squad I think everybody should be fit so I have got at least 20 players available so I am quite happy we have worked hard the last six week. Hopefully the weather will be much better today and we can play our football.

Thank you for your continued support.

Gregory

Anything Can Happen Caitlin O’Hara is hoping Gers can start a cup run against Glasgow Girls

RANGERS midfielder Caitlin O’Hara is hoping today can kick start a cup run for the squad this season. O’Hara is looking forward to getting into SSE Scottish Women’s Cup action as the Gers welcome Glasgow Girls to The Hummel Training Centre. She said: “Obviously we are just one game back in the league but anything can happen in the cup and that is what we like about it. “You can play different teams from different leagues so we are really looking forward to it and hopefully we can crack on into the next round. “We don’t know too much about them, obviously they play in the division below us but like I said it’s the cup and anything can happen. “I suspect they will come and make it hard for us to play. They will be very difficult to break down but we can only concentrate on what we can control and that is how we execute our game plan and we will still prepare the exact same way that we do and we are really looking forward to it. “It’s massive to go on a cup run, this is Rangers and we know we are expected to bring trophies to this club so we can only do our best but we know what is expected of us and we want to bring a trophy home.”

Rangers came back after the summer break and lost 3-1 away to Celtic, but O’Hara says it will take time for everyone to adjust to the changes. She added: “Looking back we are disappointed at the result and probably the performance as well and I don’t think we reached the levels that we know we are capable of but there have been a lot of changes in a short period of time and I think everyone is still trying to adjust to that. It will come eventually but we will be ready for the next game.

I don’t think we can expect too much just now, people are still adjusting but momentum is key for us and consistency is something we are targeting this year.

The midfielder has enjoyed working with Gregory Vignal since he came in as manager. “It’s been brilliant,” she added. “He has brought a lot of fresh ideas to the team he has brought a lot of energy, he knows what it takes to play with this club he’s a winner and he is trying to instil that into us. “He’s got very high standards and he has got strong values and expectations and I think he is going to be a pivotal part of the women’s side going forward.”

MATCH REPORT CELTIC WFC 3 RANGERS WFC 1 4 AUGUST 2018 | K-PARK | SWPL

RANGERS Women lost 3-1 away to Celtic this afternoon in their first game back after the mid-season break. The hosts were 2-0 up at half-time at K-Park before adding a third early in the second half. Gregory Vignal’s Rangers side got one back through Brogan Hay. Celtic threatened early on when on 7 minutes the ball was played through to Rachel Donaldson but Gers goalkeeper Ramsay was out of her goal quickly to block for a corner. The resulting corner was by taken by Sarah Ewens and met the head of Claire Crosbie but bounced off the bar and was cleared to safety. It was a warning for Rangers as their Old Firm rivals took the lead on the 13th minute as a corner swung in by Ewens bounced around the box before landing at Kathleen McGovern who fired low past Ramsay. The home side doubled their lead half way through the first half as Natalie Ross played the ball to Ewens who rounded the keeper to shoot low into an empty net.

“We made it hard for ourselves and caused a lot of running by playing a lot of long balls instead of keeping the ball on the ground and just playing but I think that is just a confidence thing. Brogan Hay

Ewens was denied a second shortly after as she found herself with space in the box again but her low drilled shot was blocked by the feet of Ramsay. Chelsie Watson had a chance from a set piece for Rangers just at the edge of the box but her curling effort was saved by the Celtic keeper. Ewens was against causing problems as she broke down the left and made ground into the box but her shot was blocked by Ramsay before bouncing and being cleared off line by Ellis Dalgleish. In a busy first half for Ramsay the Rangers keeper denied Celtic a third as she stood strong to a Kathleen McGovern shot.

Rangers grew into the game and just before the break a good one-two between Brogan Hay and Chantelle Brown resulted in Brown getting a shot away but it was a comfortable save for the Celtic keeper. Brown came close again for Rangers on the 44th as she curled her shot just over the bar. Celtic added a third just five minutes into the second-half as Ewens again provided a dangerous set piece which was headed home by their captain Kelly Clark. Rangers had a goal back on the 53rd minute after good work from Hannah Coakley down the left before she found Chantelle Brown in the box. Brown’s shot was parried away by the keeper but Brogan Hay caught the rebound to get the Gers on the scoresheet. Hay almost had a second a few minutes later as she found space on the right and attempted to lift the ball into the net but it was pushed away by the keeper Rangers came close again as captain Clare Gemmell fired in a dangerous cross which evaded the Celtic defender landed at Rosie Mcquillan but she couldn’t get the crucial touch to divert it towards goal. Celtic thought they had a fourth as Rachel Donaldson fired in a cross which was tapped in by Kathleen McGovern but the flag was up. Rangers: Ramsay, Inglis (Macdonald 58), Watson, Dalgliesh, Coackley, O’Hara, Gemmell, Napier (McCartney, 64), Brown, Robertson (Cameron, 60), Hay (Mcquillan 60). Subs: Campbell, Honeyman.

Groundbreaking Changes Amy McDonald talks about the summer investment and her new role at the club .

RANGERS Women’s and Girls’ Football Manager Amy McDonald feels the club are creating something groundbreaking after further investment. The Women’s first-team and Academy is now fully-integrated within the club’s football department with three full-time members of staff and access to sports scientists and medical staff at the Hummel Training Centre. McDonald has moved from her role as head coach, with former Rangers left-back Gregory Vignal taking up the position.

“It is a huge step for the club and it is probably huge for Scottish football.

“I think we need to recognise where the game is at but the fact is that we have got the opportunity to create something that could be groundbreaking in the country.

“To

be providing our Academy players with the best opportunity to progress to a pathway that will allow them to be a professional or semi-professional football player is unbelievable, I just wish I was 15 years younger!” Alongside Amy and Gregory, Sara Speirs has taken on an the role of Women’s and Girls’ Academy operations co-ordinator. Amy is hoping she can work well with Gregory Vignal to provide a variety of experience and expertise to the women’s side.

I think Gregory will be a great addition for us, he has got a great personality. The girls are really engaged and it is a huge step forward for us.

“We will be working really closely but at the same time I need to be respectful because ultimately it is Gregory’s team now. “I have the knowledge and expertise of the girls and women’s game and he has learned a lot from being at the Academy and his experiences in France as well so we need to work well together and we need to push to improve everything we can within the women’s and girls’ programme.” Rangers Women will now be able to sign players on semi-professional and professional contracts, a step which McDonald feels will open up more opportunity for the club. She said: “It is huge for us because we need to compete, it’s Rangers. When I was the coach I don’t think I ever shied away from the fact that we knew where we were. “We have still got a long way to go and we recognise that but to be able to attract a calibre of player and to be able to drive the standards on is massive. “We don’t rule out for any of the players that are currently here that if they buy in to everything that we are asking them to do that they won’t be rewarded as well.”

CAPTAIN’S NOTES CLARE GEMMELL

Welcome to today’s game against Glasgow Girls in the SSE Scottish Women’s Cup. There have been a number of changes over the summer break but it is great to be a part of something completely new for the first time in Scotland. We have been brought into the academy and it’s great to be training here at The Hummel Training Centre four nights a week and playing every home game here. The club have brought in people that help us with physio and weight training so they have really invested in us so it is an exciting time going forward. I hope everyone enjoys today’s cup game we thank you for your continued support.

Enjoy the game,

Clare
