MANAGERS NOTES AMY MCDONALD

WELCOME to our SWPL Cup tie against Forfar Farmington in the quarter-finals of this competition. As we have played Forfar recently in the league we know we cannot afford to be complacent. We are going to have to work extremely hard and be at our best over 90 minutes to progress in the cup competition. Both teams will want to be in the hat for the semi-finals and this means you are going to witness a competitive match. The team have a point to prove following last weeks defeat against Hibernian. We go into the match at full fitness and competition for places is now what will drive our success with every player wanting to be in the starting XI. I believe we have the quality to move into the next round however as with any cup competition it is mentality that will get you there.

Thank you for your continued support. Enjoy the game.

CUP GAME HAS AN EDGE RANGERS defender Hannah Coakley believes that there is a different feel to today’s SWPL Cup match against Forfar Farmington.

The Light Blues saw off the Angus side in the league with a narrow victory two weeks ago, but Coakley understands that there is a different atmosphere that comes with the cup. Coakley said: “With it being a cup game, it has got that extra edge, but we are confident and fully believe that we can go and win.

It was good to take all three points from our last meeting however we didn’t make it easy for ourselves and with it being a cup game there is another added element.

“We know Forfar can be difficult to break down at times so it is important we stick to our game plan, take our chances and play with a greater intensity across the full 90 minutes. “Our aim for the cup is simple, to reach the final at the very least.” Only four games into the season and Coakley has already had some injury troubles, but the centre back is determined to put that behind her and push on.

FORFAR FARMINGTON

She said: “Unfortunately, injuries are part of the game and I was unlucky to have sustained one in the first game of the season.

I’m feeling a lot better and glad to be back to full training after a couple of weeks rest.”

With both sides coming into the match off the back of heavy defeats, Coakley knows that the players can’t be allowed to dwell on last week’s match against Hibernian and must to pick themselves up and move forward going into Sunday’s tie against Forfar. She said: “It was a disappointing result against Hibs but we have re-grouped, dusted ourselves down and are fully focused on rectifying our mistakes.”

MATCH REPORT RANGERS WFC 2 FORFAR FARMINGTON 1 10 MARCH 2018 | BENBURB | SWPL

A LATE winner from Chantelle Brown saw Rangers come from behind to claim a hard fought 2-1 victory over Forfar in their Scottish Building Society SWPL match two weeks ago. On the balance of play, Rangers deserved the three points in the game but Forfar put in a very good effort. In the first ten minutes, Rangers were narrowly on top and created a few good openings from long balls from the back. The pace of Hayley Sinclair and Laura McCartney down the wings caused Forfar a few problems. However, it was the away side who created the first chance of the game with Kilcoyne shooting narrowly over the bar from around 25 yards out after three minutes. Rangers then went up the other end and created a chance of their own, as Sinclair’s cross was met by the head of Lauren Gallon who headed just over the bar. Forfar caused Rangers some problems on the counter attack. On the 19th minute, a cross from Robyn Smith turned into a cross come shot which was clawed away by Jade Baillie. Rangers dominated the ball and territory in the early stages of the first half, but Forfar posed a dangerous threat once they got the ball. Forfar got the breakthrough in the 24th minute after Robyn Smith passed the ball out to the edge of the box to find Danielle McGinley who cooly dispatched past Baillie in the Rangers goal.

FORFAR FARMINGTON

Almost straight from the restart, Carla Boyce latched onto a poor back pass from Leah White to be through on goal only to see her shot go into the body of the Forfar keeper who saved well from the strike In the 28th minute McCartney was brought down in the box and the referee awarded Rangers a penalty. Jade Gallon’s penalty was straight at the keeper who pulled off a decent one handed save to deny Rangers a goal.

When we missed the penalty to get back in it, it reminded me of Rangers of old, I think if that was last season we would have really struggled to come back into the game. “That’s testament to the players mentality now, that we managed to push in the second half, get the goals and get us over the line with the three points. Amy McDonald

Shortly before half time Rangers came close again after McCartney’s brilliant shot from just outside the box smacked off the crossbar. In the second half Rangers came out strongly again and dominated. They deservedly got the equalising goal mid-way through the second half. A low cross from substitute Brown was poked home by Jade Gallon from about 6 yards out. Rangers nearly scored again a few minutes later, when Boyce was put through on goal again only to see her shot go straight into the keeper who parried the ball away before the second shot was deflected wide.

In the second half, we got the ball on the deck and we were able to find the passes a lot more and got in behind the full back like we knew we could do.” Chantelle Brown

Just into the last ten minutes of the game and Rangers finally got the winner they were after. Claire Gemmell slotted a ball into Chantelle Brown whose shot from a tight angle bobbled into the net via a deflection from the keeper who got a hand to it. Rangers edged past their opponents to claim three crucial league points. RANGERS: Baillie, Dalgliesh, Donnelly, Gallon, Inglis (Muir 68), Gemmell, O’Hara (Napier 89), Gallon, Sinclair (Brown 58), McCartney, Boyce (Puller 76) SUBS NOT USED: Brown, Ramsay, Watson

CAPTAIN’S NOTES CLARE GEMMELL

GOOD afternoon and welcome to another exciting game for us in the SPFL Cup. Having played Forfar two weeks ago in the league, we are aware of how they set up and the style of football they want to play. Despite it being a 2-1 victory last time, I don’t think that was a true reflection of the game. We had numerous chances in the 90 minutes and had we capitalised on them we could have won by a greater margin. Credit must be given to Forfar’s goalkeeper who had a good performance and managed to keep the score line down. This Sunday we need to start at a higher tempo and ensure we control the pace and can dictate the game for the 90 minutes. We have players with speed, which can really cause them problems, that was evident in the last game. We can’t be complacent, Forfar are a team that can hurt you if you allow them to get a foot in the game. As individuals and as a team we have a responsibility to apply ourselves to ensure we end up in the draw for the next round. Enjoy the game,

Cla

MATCH REPORT HIBERNIAN 4 RANGERS WFC 0 17 MAR 2018 | AINSLIE PARK

RANGERS suffered defeat at the hands of Hibernian last time out as the SWPL leaders beat the Gers 4-0 at Ainslie Park. A hat-trick from Hibs’ forward Lia Tweedie and a clincher from Siobhan Hunter saw the home side steal all three points. Despite the scoreline Rangers played well in spells throughout the match while creating few chances. The side saw some good spells of possession either sides of the half time whistle but just could not convert the build-up play into chances. The first half was dominated by the home side and they had the first shot of the match in the sixth minute when left winger Jamie-Lee Napier volleyed from just inside the box with her shot being held well by Jade Baillie in the Rangers goal. Rangers, who were defending well under a little pressure for the home side, were almost the masters of their own destruction when an unusually slack pass form the impressive Amy Muir gifted the ball to Hibernians Lauren Davidson only for the striker to be martialled out wide by the Gers defence. The home side pressure eventually paid off when they took the lead in the 32nd minute when some fine work form the Hibs midfield released Davidson on the left wing. She floated a high ball over the Rangers back line to the on rushing Tweedie who slotted home first time from three yards out. Some fine work by Holly Napier in the midfield then almost saw the Gers with a chance to equalise. She danced passed two Hibs players; slide a fine pass to Carla Boyce who then tried to feed Laura McCartney through on goal for the linesman on the far side to flag for offside. Hibs striker Tweedie doubled her sides’ advantage in the 42nd minute when she bulleted home a header from six yards, after a corner was swung in from the right hand side by Rachael Small.

We need to be better. There are no excuses, it doesn’t matter what shape they are playing, it matters how we conduct our roles and responsibilities.” Amy McDonald

Gers keeper Jade Baillie pulled off a fine stop to keep it at 2-0 on the stroke of half time when Hibernian’s Kirsten Reilly struck a dead ball from 30 yards out. The Light Blues were looking likely to score next after the restart, enjoying the bulk of possession when totally against the run of play Hibs made it 3-0. Hibs striker Tweedie sealed a fine forward display by sliding home from a few yards out after a cross from Chelsea Cornet. Thus ensuring she was taking the match ball home with her hat-trick. The home side ensured all three points were staying in the capital city when on 68 minutes Colette Cavanagh low cross from the left was met by Siobhan Hunter slide footed home from the around the penalty spot making it 4-0 Hibernian.

A lot of goals today were due to our wrong doing, we need to correct that, it’s early in the season so we definitely need to rectify these moving forward. “Obviously Hibs done well to put us under pressure, but we can do better with our problem solving. We should be able to deal with these situations on the pitch and that is something that we need to improve on.” Lauren Gallon

Rangers had a penalty shout on 87 minutes when substitute Nicole Pullar was clattered by Hibs defender Joelle Murray and keeper Fife but the referee deemed the ball was won and waved play on. In almost the last kick of the ball the home side were unlucky not to add a fifth when Hunter nearly notched her second of the game when she headed off the cross bar. RANGERS: Baillie, Dalgliesh, Coakley, L. Gallon, Inglis (Brown 54), Gemmell, McCartney, Napier, J. Gallon, Muir, Boyce (Pullar 66) SUBS NOT USED: Ramsay, Watson, Sinclair, O’Hara. GOALS: Tweedie (32, 42, 57) Hunter (68)
