MY OLD FIRM AIM RANGERS’ midfielder Caitlin O’Hara is looking forward to getting involved in today’s derby match against Celtic and is keen for her side to continue their goalscoring form. Going into the match, O’Hara believes that morale is high after Rangers showed their ability to overcome the difficult result against Hibernian two weeks ago with a 4-1 SPWL Cup victory. She said: “Training has been really good this week and we’re feeling really confident after a positive start to the season.

The team is looking good and we’ve been working really hard, it was good to bounce back against Forfar after a disappointing result the week before.”

A key focus for Rangers so far this season has been to become more clinical in front of goal and O’Hara believes that Rangers are beginning to find their stride and she hopes it continues on Sunday. O’Hara said: “It’s good to be spreading goals around the team. We had four different scorers last week against Forfar.

It’s brilliant for momentum to have goals coming from all different areas of the pitch. Goals build confidence, you need goals to win games.” While O’Hara acknowledges the growing atmosphere around a derby game, she knows that it’s important that Rangers stick to their status quo to be fully prepared for the match. She said: “We are feeling really excited; the game has got the added spice to it with it being a match against Celtic but I’m feeling confident. “I’m really hoping that I can make my way into the starting lineup and be able to impact the game somehow.

I think there is always an atmosphere around games like this. We will play our normal game and we will prepare in the same way but it’s obvious there’s the extra bite.” Caitlin O’Hara

“We want to win this game and we are ready to battle.”

MANAGERS NOTES AMY MCDONALD

Welcome to our SWPL match against Celtic in what is to be a fiercely competitive game. Our preparation this week has gone extremely well and we know we have to be focused to be able to take the three points. The squad played extremely well against Forfar last weekend, with four different goal scorers ensuring we progressed in the SWPL Cup. We were drawn against Glasgow City and I repeat my previous message which is - to be the best we have to play and compete against the best. Whilst we know this is a difficult task we remain optimistic it isn’t impossible one. We move into this week with no new injuries and a number of players are closer to returning. Hannah Robertson and Brogan Hay are now in non-contact training. Sarah Robertson is slightly more advanced in her rehabilitation and is on a graded return which will increase the competitiveness across the full squad and add value in attack. It is great to have all three players in and around training. We hope today is a highly entertaining match and as always thank you for your ongoing support.

MATCH REPORT RANGERS WFC 4 FORFAR FARMINGTON 1

RANGERS reached the semi-finals of the SWPL Cup with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Forfar Farmington last weekend. The first half was dominated by Rangers but a stubborn Forfar side didn’t allow the home side many clear openings. Forfar posed a threat on the break but were mostly kept at bay by a solid Rangers defence. Both teams were clearly up for the cup tie from the kick off. Rangers were clearly looking to press Forfar whenever they were on the ball. It was a high intensity start from the home team, which Head Coach Amy McDonald had called for after the league defeat to Hibernian. The home side got the first chance of the game in the eighth minute, when the ball bobbled through to Amy Muir whose shot from a tight angle was straight into the keeper.

We were fairly dominant but in the first half, I don’t think we created a lot of chances moving into the final third. Then we got the penalty and that set us up well to go in 2-0 up at half time.” Amy McDonald

After a quiet spell in the game Rangers broke the deadlock in the 17th minute. Following a high ball forward Muir was brought down by a Forfar defender in the box and the referee pointed to the spot. Claire Gemmell then coolly dispatched the penalty into the bottom corner of the net, sending McNicoll the wrong way. The Gers had another penalty appeal in the 25th minute when Holly Napier went down in the box, but the referee didn’t award a penalty that time around. Rangers got the crucial second goal just before the break. Following a corner from captain Gemmel there was an all mighty scramble inside the box. The ball found its way to Hannah Coakley who dispatched the ball through a couple of defenders and into the bottom corner of the net. Giving a bit of breathing space for the home side at half time. McDonald’s side added a third just after the break when Carla Boyce played Chantelle Brown in on goal, she then unselfishly squared the ball to Nicole Puller who tapped home.

Rangers should have added a fourth ten minutes into the second half when Gemmell found herself with a free header, but she couldn’t get enough power through it and it was comfortable for the keeper in the end. Forfar then got a goal back in the 70th minute through a Danni McGinley volley from the edge of the box, giving the away side a glimmer of hope. The visitors grew in confidence after the goal and pressed hard to try get back into the game. Rangers were a bit nervy at the back but managed to stop Forfar from creating too many clear-cut opportunities.

A great performance overall and great that the players coming on had the impact that we wanted them to have too.”

Rangers once again came close to the fourth in the 73rd minute when Boyce fired a shot at goal which was well saved by McNicoll. Then Boyce added the decisive fourth goal in the 85th minute, after a deflected Hayley Sinclair shot found its way to her. She scored from close range, putting the game to bed. Rangers now wait to find out who they will face in the Semi-Finals. CAPTAIN’S NOTES CLARE GEMMELL

TODAY we play Celtic in the league and I think for us it is a good time to face them, having just come off the back of a convincing cup win against Forfar. We will be looking to take that momentum from reaching the SWPL Cup semi-finals forward into this game. It was a good team display and we were dominant throughout, having four separate goalscorers is always beneficial too. Celtic are a good side, with good players and we need to be prepared for what they can bring to a game. We have been working hard this week in training and we are aware of the areas on the pitch where we can exploit them. With it being an Old Firm, there will no doubt be an extra edge to the atmosphere. We need to be emotionally aware and not allow the occasion to distract from our ability to perform. We have a real opportunity to set the tone for the rest of our season going forward. Enjoy the game,

Cla
