WE don’t need an excuse to look back at a goal against Celtic in the matchday programme, and today’s Snapshot features one of best scored in an Old Firm derby. On this day in 2011, 19-year-old Jamie Ness produced a moment of magic to give Rangers a second-minute lead in an enthralling Scottish Cup fifthround tie at Ibrox. El Hadji Diouf’s corner was cleared out of the box to the young midfielder who took one touch before he unleashed a left-foot rocket which soared into the opposite top corner of Fraser Forster’s net. It was a remarkable start to a game which finished 2-2, and although Celtic would win the replay few will forget Ness’ stunning strike in just his ninth first-team appearance.

//OPPOSITION FOCUS • JOURNO’S VIEW

David Wren is the Sports Editor for the Kilmarnock Standard newspaper and he regularly covers Killie’s matches. Ahead of today’s Scottish Cup tie at Ibrox, we caught up with him to get his thoughts on recent events at Rugby Park and how he thinks his local side will fare against Rangers. Gary Locke resigned as Kilmarnock manager after their 1-0 defeat to Hamilton last weekend. Was the pressure on him simply becoming too much? DW: “It was a disappointing end for Locke, the team failed to show any fight against Hamilton. “I don’t know if it was so much the pressure, maybe more the fact he’d run out of ideas and perhaps felt he’d done all he could.”

Are Killie underachieving or are they where they should be with the squad of players they currently have? DW: “They are definitely underachieving. In the Premiership they have a squad capable of a push into the top six but too often this season they

have not turned up in big games. “With a new manager set to come in, hopefully they can realise their potential sooner rather than later.”

What can you say about Kilmarnock’s recent form going into this afternoon’s game with Rangers? DW: “In fairness, despite two defeats on the bounce, they had taken seven points from a possible 12 before the Dundee United match [on January 23]. “When Killie play, they can be a match for anyone in the league but they’ve had too many off days so far this season.”
