Double or quits AFTER LAST TWO-MATCH AFFAIR AGAINST MOTHERWELL, STUART MCCALL THINKS THIS PAIR OF GAMES CAN SET RANGERS OFF ON A BETTER PATH INTERVIEW BY ANDREW DICKSON

HE last time Rangers went into a double header against Motherwell, it didn’t end at all well for the Ibrox side. Beaten 3-1 in the first leg of the Premiership play-offs, the Light Blues were as good as condemned to another year in the Championship before they even got as far as the return game at Fir Park. Nevertheless, the manner of a 3-0 defeat in Lanarkshire - and the ugly scenes which followed - only compounded the disappointment of what was a huge missed opportunity a few days later. A little more than a year-and-a-half on from that, Gers are once more braced for 180 minutes of football against the Steelmen with much hinging on the outcome. This afternoon’s Scottish Cup fourth round tie has the potential to set Mark Warburton’s men off on a path back to Hampden, where they lost in last season’s final. Having got that far as a second-tier team – and lost to second-tier opposition in Hibernian – it is certainly realistic to believe a further step forward can be taken in the competition this term. Seven days from now, Rangers will travel along the M74 to play Motherwell again as the top flight resumes after a four-week winter break. While the result won’t necessarily be as decisive in terms of the bigger picture, it offers a chance for Warburton’s players to keep building towards a second-place finish in the table. Stuart McCall has managed both sides, was in charge of Rangers for those playoff games and, of course, played a key role under Walter Smith during the run to Nine in a Row in the 1990s. While he will always retain an affinity with Well, few would argue the Bradford manager’s heart lies anywhere other than Ibrox when it comes to Scottish football.

JOURNO’S

VIEW

Michael Temlett is the Sports Editor at the Wishaw Press and regularly reports on Motherwell’s fortunes at home and way. We caught up with him this week to get his views ahead of this afternoon’s Scottish Cup clash.

ON this day 10 years ago David Weir pulled on a Rangers jersey for the first time in a 1-0 league victory over Dunfermline. The towering defender was 36 and Walter Smith’s first signing after he returned to manage the club following Paul Le Guen’s short spell in charge. On the next few pages Davie remembers the days leading up to his dream move to Ibrox and his debut at East End Park.

I

N January 2007 the decision to bring Walter Smith back to Rangers for a second spell as manager would prove crucial for the club and almost straight away fans pondered who his first signing would be. With the Light Blues 17 points behind Celtic in the league after Paul Le Guen’s reign at Ibrox, the squad was in need of a lift, someone who could have a positive impact both on and off the pitch. When it was announced that David Weir was to be that man, many wondered if the then 36-year-old could help turn the club’s fortunes around, with some supporters questioning Smith’s decision to bring the ‘veteran’ defender north on an initial six-month deal after negotiating an early release from his Everton contract.

They needn’t have worried, as Weir was a natural leader in the dressing and his impressive, commanding displays earned him new deal after new deal as league and cup success returned to Ibrox. The UEFA Cup run to Manchester in 2007/08 was another highlight from Weir’s remarkable five years at Rangers, and in that season he made 64 of his 231 competitive appearances for the club. On this day 10 years ago – 21 January 2007 Davie made his Rangers debut against Dunfermline Athletic, with Charlie Adam scoring the only goal of the game after nine minutes at East End Park. There were to be many more memorable victories ahead for the Hall of Fame legend, who savoured his early days as a Rangers

ON THE SPOT THIS SEASON WE ARE ASKING FANS TO SEND IN A RANGE OF QUESTIONS FOR THE RANGERS PLAYERS VIA EMAIL AND SOCIAL MEDIA AND WE WILL PUBLISH THE ANSWERS IN THE 2016/17 MATCHDAY PROGRAMMES. under the spotlight today is silver haired striker martyn waghorn.

WHAT WOULD YOU BE IF YOU WEREN’T A FOOTBALLER? (dylan.c72, Instagram) I would maybe have been a rugby player; I had the chance to play rugby before I joined Sunderland. I was a good player but I was only young so who knows where it would have gone, but I would have tried my hand at that. I think I have the build for it!

THE SILVER FOX IN THE BOX

WHO WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR THE HAIRCUT (I’M LOVING IT)? (barriemckayloyals, Instagram) I fancied something different and it is only a haircut at the end of the day. I said I needed something different and I was going to go light blonde but it didn’t look great, so I said “just try silver” and we went with that. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE GOAL YOU’VE SCORED FOR RANGERS? (jackcruden.72, Instagram)

WAGGY SCORES WITH HIS HEAD AGAINST ACCIES

One of my favourites would have been the header against Hamilton just before Christmas. It meant a lot to me after being in and out of the side; I had a lack of confidence and then got the start. It was a lot of pressure released and then later on getting the second was a huge weight off my shoulders knowing I can still score. It was a good finish from me too. WHAT’S THE BIGGEST LIVING ANIMAL YOU RECKON YOU COULD REALISTICALLY SELLOTAPE TO A LAMPPOST? (jamiegfc1882, Instagram) I would have to use the big rolls that you get for Christmas presents. Is a big dog out of the equation or do you think I could go bigger? I would go for a cow. That is that one clarified. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE KIDS WANTING TO BECOME AS GOOD AS YOU? (jamieauld__rfc, Instagram)

WORK HARD IN TRAINING KIDS!

Hard work. You have to apply yourself really well, you have to train hard and have a lot of dedication. I sacrificed a lot as a kid and then when you get into your teens it is a difficult period when you see your pals going out and doing things that you want to do. You have to be really focussed on your goal and what you want to achieve, anything is possible so just keep going.

20 years on - jan 12/18 Jan 1997 - part 5 Clear Blue Water - Rozy rocked by injury but Gers maintain lead at top IN the summer of 1996 Walter Smith and his Rangers players began an incredible journey that would end with a historic triumph. Having secured eight successive championship titles, Gers needed one more to equal Celtic’s record, set under Jock Stein between 1966 and 1974. The pressure was massive, the intensity was ferocious and the expectation was colossal but Smith and his players came through in magnificent fashion. Today we relive another stage of the unforgettable 1996/97 season.

THE LOVING CUP CEREMONY THIS season in the matchday programme Rangers historian David Mason will continue to provide fascinating stories from our great club’s illustrious past.

David speaks at the Loving Cup ceremony prior to Rangers’ Scottish Cup fourth round tie against Cowdenbeath on 10 January 2016

T

HE traditional Loving Cup ceremony will be conducted today prematch, in the salubrious surroundings of the Blue Room. Undoubtedly, director Paul Murray and managing director Stewart Robertson will conduct the ceremony with all the grace and dignity it deserves. However, there was one year when I recall that this very important event in the Rangers calendar was rather shambolic 2012.

Craig Whyte had only recently taken control of the club and he was offered the opportunity to conduct the ceremony. He initially declined and I was asked by the much missed Sandy Jardine if I would step into the breach on behalf of the club. Until 15 minutes before the scheduled time I was ready and wellprepared for this most honourable task, when Sandy, with a rather crestfallen look, informed me that Mr Whyte had decided that he would take the ceremony.

The Last Word with CRAIG MULHOLLAND

HEAD OF ACADEMY CRAIG MULHOLLAND WITH UNDER-20 COACH GRAEME MURTY

ANGERS take on Falkirk in a Youth Cup fifth round tie at Ibrox Stadium tomorrow, and Head of Academy Craig Mulholland is hoping to see as many supporters as possible turn out to support the club’s rising stars. The young Light

Blues have enjoyed victories over Edusport and Hearts in previous rounds of the Cup this season and Mulholland hopes Graeme Murty’s side can progress further in the competition with a win tomorrow afternoon on home soil. Here, he explains what fans can look forward to at Ibrox…

They will get to see some of the young talent that we have in the Academy, which is great, but most importantly for us we would be delighted if as many Rangers supporters as possible came along. What is hard for us is to recreate that firstteam environment in the under-20s matches.

Good luck

in today’s fourth round match

HEAD OF ACADEMY CRAIG MULHOLLAND WITH UNDER-20 COACH GRAEME MURTY

We are trying to get these boys ready to play at Ibrox in front of 50,000, but when you are playing in front of 50 people at Stirling Albion, it’s difficult to recreate that intensity. If we can get a couple of thousand supporters along to watch us in the fifth round of the Youth

Cup, then one; the boys will love it and it will be a great support for them, and two; it brings a little bit of extra pressure, and that’s critical in terms of their development. The players are all excited about playing at Ibrox and a few years ago it used to be you would play in your

home club stadium more often, but with the quality of pitches now that doesn’t happen so frequently. They’ll be excited by it but they have to get used to running down that tunnel, used to where the dressing

William Hill rules apply. Over 18s only. FOR ADVICE & INFORMATION VISIT WWW.GAMBLEAWARE.CO.UK. NATIONAL GAMBLING HELPLINE 0808 8020 133.
