Louisiana State University Agricultural Center to Host Environmental Resolution Workshop for High School 4-H Club Members BATON ROUGE, La. – High school 4-H Club members will help find solutions to the top 10 environmental threats faced by Louisiana, when attending an overnight workshop sponsored by Louisiana State University’s Agricultural Center (LSUAC), said LSU’s water quality specialist and workshop coordinator, Dr. Fred Sanders, who holds a doctorate in agricultural science. Students have two opportunities to attend. The free workshop will take place on Nov. 13, and Nov. 8-10, at Camp Grant Walker, in Pollock, La. Students can sign up online at https://LSU.edu/ac/workshop. The deadline is Oct. 15, and space is limited to 100 students per session, said Sanders. The hands-‐on workshop will enable participants to experience the process of resolving issues such as soundness of the levees, overfishing, encroachment into the wetlands, and offshore drilling, said Louisiana Environmental Action Plan (LEAP) chairman, Anthony Diamond. The students will be divided into groups of 10 and each will tackle a separate issue. Graduate students from LSU’s school of agriculture will facilitate the groups, said Sanders. Pickup spots in New Orleans, Alexandria, Shreveport and Baton Rouge will be available to the students. Participants should pack necessary toiletries and bedding for overnight stays. In their leisure time, students can enjoy swimming, horseback riding, and tennis, said Sanders. Camp coordinators, Sanders and Dr. Bill Branch, Ph.D., both of whom work at LSUAC and are also members of LEAP. LEAP is a committee formed by Gov. Kathleen Blanco in 2006, after Hurricane Katrina, to help determine the environmental threats to Louisiana.
