Thesis “FUTURE SHOCK IS THE SHATTERING STRESS AND DISORIENTATION THAT WE INDUCE IN INDIVIDUALS BY SUBJECTING THEM TO TOO MUCH CHANGE IN TOO SHORT TIME” ALVIN TOFFLER Barcelona port 2015

Surfaces On Demand is a language, its a system that can be adapt anywhere any time, as long as the city has water sources and physical buildings. This system can be change and adapt to any situation. like The reality in which we live in today where changes occures every second. Streets and neighberhoods changes their density/ colurs/ sounds every hour. In this project im tring to bring this constant changing reality to the water. The water surfaces are fluid and movable. This is a tool to accelerate, intensify and enrich city’s and h activities. This is a new way to connect the sea to the city. By using three main elements- Data, People and Energy that moves freely back and forth from, and to the city. The islands produce the energy needed to the “inlands islands”, that’s makes the system much more efficient and smart. In case no energy is needed, so the islands wont produce it. Same as for the flow of people and the flow of data. This is a bottom up system and 100% democratic architectural spaces and this is the way i want to image ports in the far future! 06

07

Architecture that reacts People have been dreaming, painting, writing and planning their ports from the beginning of time. The project presents an imaginary concept of Barcelona’s port 100 years from now. This project developed a system in which people will have the ability to create their own surfaces, their own and immediate public spaces, by using and calculating real time data systems, taking into consideration the weather, amount of people, amount of ships, number of attractions etc. Ports are field of energy, like a living cell, they are always in a process of constant changing. That makes them full of potential. In the ports we have all kinds of ships and boats, with huge variety of programs, sizes etc. The surfaces system that the project developed can affect each one of them and create a simultaneity multifunctional system that will give people the opportunity to share spaces in the sea water. There will be three main parts to this work- The first part will discuss the sea and the water relations, focusing mainly on their meaning to the city of Barcelona. The second part will discuss the pop up surface concept for the future- its meaning and its goals. The third part of this work will discuss the three main „Players“- People, Data and Energy. The forth part will present the conclusion of the work and points some possible critic points to this specific future view. 08

Formless Architecture In the book „future shock“ by alvin toffler there is a very specific view about the future, this view describe the future as a flood of knowledge that will live the human been without any option to function. I tried to bring some of this mood into the project by using real time data as the main factor of creating the space. This Data creates a responsive architecture, that changes all the time and can be seen in many different ways. Actually the project changes every single minute, and that‘s why he has no shape of no form. The only thing that matters is the process, the language, the system. What is important to formless architecture? Motivation. And the motivation is the human basic need to interact and social. I think this will never disappear, because this is simply what makes as human, no matter how many pad, iPod, tablet etc. we are using. This basic notion is the starting points of the project- to bring people together. To create interesting and smart public spaces, in the sea, and in the land. Spaces that are self-organized and self-sufficient in terms of programs and energy creation and consumption. And for, apparently you don‘t need to build a lot. And here arose another big question-

maybe we don‘t need architects at all? 09

The sea and the land are the most influential and dominate forces that shape our life and cities throughout the future. Each of them has its natural power to destroy or to crate life at every single moment. In this chapter ill present the project altitude towards the sea and the land and offer the option to see them as a unite system that work perfectly and simultaneity together as one unit Humans will always feel more comfortable living on land and not on the water. But, maybe we can still have more of the ocean experience, to make actual public temporary spaces in the water. This notion can always help many touristic issues that the big and important cities in Europe suffer from. Basically it meant tourist can just enter and leave the city quickly almost without being notice, and without interrupting the regular people of Barcelona

Our environment is changing every second. Our cities, streets and even houses. This project offers a view that considers the land and the sea as part of this ever changing reality. If we treat the ocean a place that can inhabit public spaces, and the land that can be shipped directly into, then we can start to talk about data driven reality. And data driven architecture This project experiment is so interesting especially in Barcelona, as this city is being so dominate by the sea and the harbor life, but at the same time have an amazedly smart and developed urban systems on the land

# 01

Sea/land The two dominant and opposite forces of Barcelona. The way they will shape the city’s far future depends on how they will work together and influence each other.

We should start and see the options that lay in the sea and the land, instead of fighting with them and try to put human rules upon them; we can try and work with the sea and the land. Moreover, we can try and combine these to forces into one coherent language that can creates spaces and act as one

1915, Barcelona This is an image of the port form the begging of the last centure. In general port has went through huge transformastion throu out the previuse century. In political, economical, social and even military terms there has been a lot of changes. In a short period of onee hundred years, the port of Barcelona, today is one of the most important and most crucial to the econic of hole Europe

14

15

2015, Barcelona This image shows how the port look today. We can imidiatly see the main “player” in that games. The ports became a field of energy where everything is a live and moving, from the huge cruz ships, untill the small fish boats, from wild natire to Baecalona’s neiberhoods. What a huge tranformation in one hundred years. From here we can only imagine how bigg the changes can be in the next one hundred years

water tranportation catalog THE SEA TRANSPORTATION IS BECOMING MORE AND MORE DEVELOPED THROUGHOUT THE LAST ONE HUNDRED YEARS; WE CAN ONLY DREAM HOW IT WILL LOOK LIKE IN MORE ONE HUNDRED. TODAY IN THE 21TH CENTURY THERE ARE BOATS FOR 1-2 PERSONS AND ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE SCALE WE CAN FIND HUGE MEGA SHIP BOATS FOR 10,000 PEOPLE. BY CREATING THIS DICTIONARY I GOT THE TOOL OF CONTROLLING THE DIFFERENCES DENSITIES AND I WAS ABLE TO UNDERSTAND BETTER HOW HUMANS TRANSPORT THEMSELVES INSIDE THE WATER

From racing boat to mega Cruz ships The have the option to create physical spaces inside the water is critical and fascinating. Who wouldn’t won’t to have in his vocation the option to step down from his ship, in the middle of the ocean and just hung out around. I divided the sea transportations tool into four main group s/m/l/xl starting from the smallest racing boat until the mega Cruz ship. This group division but size and programs set the tool for the future development of the connections according the group of the boat/ship S- The smallest ships that can host only several people, but usually they can move fatly M- Little bigger boats such as small yachts, usually use for luxury L- Big ships like Cruz ships that have programs on them and start to function as small cities XL- The biggest ships that will become even bigger in the future. This is a city inside the ocean.

The Need to Meet People will always have the need to social, and meet other people, that is in the base of our definition as human beings. to bring people together will never disappear, not even in one hundred years from now. This is the main purpose of the pop up surfacesto bring people together. To unite them, and to create public situation as much as possible.

The pop up surfaces have six main definitions-Its a tool to intensify density of of any kind -Its a tool to accelerate movement -Its a tool to unusual and free movement -Its a tool to create mixture of programs

In the project these two systems are equal in their functions; one can’t work without the other. As ill explain in the next chapter, the water creates energy for the land, but without the people using the land spaces there won’t be any need for energy, and therefore no need for surfaces inside the water as well. That is what makes the system smart and efficient When the island is not needed by any boat, it won’t appear, only when they are need, surfaces can appear and disappear as well

# 02 Pop up surfaces

-Its a tool that creates new relations with the land -Its a tool based on real time data The pop up surfaces have no specific shape they create at once, by the need of people, and when this need is over, they can disappear, or reappear somewhere else. This thinking starts to create amazing experience for the society, just imagine this!

Bottom up reality. a much more democratic built environment, in which we can create and design our spaces immediately, without hierarchy and preplanning.

The pop up surfaces are self-organized bottom up creation, they pop up the moment you need therm. This is a new vision toward smart and efficient public spaces in the future

architecture that reacts By saying architecture can and should react I mean, the architecture should not be so stiff and permanent in the future any more. Our life is so dynamic, and so should be our built environment. The surfaces that I discuss in that chapter are being made and vanished by the need of the people; their shape and their size are also being determined by the need of the people. In that sense the architecture is changing and being created by the need of the users, I think this is exactly where we should aim our future, this is exactly what we can start to except from our built environment

The way the system worksS surface XL ships- As the big ships have already their programs such as theaters, casinos, football courts etc... People don’t need anything but the opportunity to meet and connect, so the surfaces can be small just to enable this act As the ships getting smaller the islands go bigger. XL Surface- S ships- As the smallest boats doesn’t carry any programs but 3,4 people the surfaces are bigger so can they enable some public activities that will pop up on the surfaces, such as- see parks, pools, restaurants underwater aquarium etc.

Imges Reference Top right- the diagram that shows the relation between the hips and the surfaces. The bigger the ships the smaller the surfaces it needs Down right- Axo of the territory where is shows the exact

22

23

The ships and the chips The surfaces are changing their size according to the bigness of the ships and amount of programs the ships has. For example the Cruz ships can inhabit more than 5,000 people, and they have all different kind of programs on them, for example, Casinos, soccer fields, pools, cinemas etc. When these ships want to create a situation of meeting all they need is a surface On the contrary small boats, like racing boat for example dot carry any programs on them, and not a lot of people, so when they wants to create surfaces on the sea to meet the need bigger territories so they can create programs on them. Pop-up programs. The bigger the ships the smaller the surface it need!

This places will host the coming people from the harbor and will function as island on the land. The main advantage of this places is their posibiloty to function as a joint in the human arm. The joint itself doesnt moves but it enable all the other parts to have movement and flexbilyty posibilties.

# 03 THE SHIPS AND THE CHIPS New relations between dynamic surfaces inside the water, and the ships that are traveling in it.

Just imagine how strong is this tool, for example instead of having 3-4 huge Cruz ships porting at the port individually, we can now join them together on have a small scale city of 20,000 inside the water with huge v erity of combined programs. This is also demarcating tool, as small boats sailors can share the same spaces as reach people with expansice yachts

plans & sections The section shows how the entrance to the city from the port is has completely changed and developed. The section shows how a person is now going from boat to island to boat to island to ship until he reaches the port. This is a new way to entering the city a new way to enter the water. In this new rout the person can enter and enjoy freely the programs of other ships and islands, so this whole territory is now working a one system with many layers and rich with variety of public programs and interests

The plans show another specific moment of islands and ships relations. The islands are floating like oil in the water; they are keep growing and shrinking like POPCORN. As the system is in constant changing this is one specific moment, one hour after, everything can be different

30

31

FIVE PHASES This diagram is the main concept of the project. It defines the way I imagine our ports one hundred years from now. In the diagram there are five different phases of the process of moving to and from the city. The five phases change in the way they collect data. Data is the key figure that defines and creates these spaces. For example in the picks times in matter of number of people, number of ships etc.. The graph is bigger and denser, on the contrast, when the mount of programs in low, the graph is smaller and much less dense This system works and acts as a real human being organ. It can be stretched whenever it wants, it can react freely to changing reality and it can be dense at some points and less dense in others. This is a huge progress in our view for our cities, when we’ll start to design and build our environment a constant changing architecture, architecture that react and can be changed all the time, according to specific data. This is the future! The main players in the reality that will be presented in the next chapter, are the ships that enters the port, the ships are the catalizator of the whole process, they are bringing their programs and the people to the city, and this is the first step of creating this organ

fields of energy I The next two drawings presents the processes of imagining physical territories as fields of energies where everything in constant changing. Mountain can be created valleys as well. When we see everything around us as energy that is moving like waves. It’s a dynamic process where every part is being affected by the other one Territories are now seen as fields, they are much more liberate to express and present they are free and waiting for parameters to affect them For example we can see moment with high picks and moment that are shallower, moment that is really dense and moment that is flat. The physical environment became a reflection of our daily experiences

fields of energy II The image above presents some of the optional spaces that the surfaces inside the water can become. Theses shapes are changing in their height, size and shape. Using GALAPAGOS software and GRASSHOPPEPR I was able to get many of these forms. The shapes are being affected by the ships and the boats and the number of people- All the real time data that was expressed in the previous chapter Shapes are becoming now something much more fluid and flexible that can react. In face all these options can happen one after the other in a daily course or even a one hour time. What matter is the maximum variety and options that the reality can make upon these surfaces?

36

37

fields of energy We can start and imagine our built environment as fields of energy. By saying that I mean that they have the power to change in real time, to react, to stretch and so on... Fields of energy can say much more than stone or glass, this is a conceptual thinking about still and permanent places. In the next diagrams I present some of the sketches I’ve done in order to show the port territory as a conceptual field of energy, with highly dense points and much open edges at the same time. Here I present only six of them, but by using the computer software, today we can produces hundred with that reason

Static & strategic The in land islands were another step of the project. In that step, I begun to examine and analyzing the whole port territory, including the land and the monjuic mountain. The first thing that I’ve noticed, is that there are already alto of in land islands. What is is? In land islands is the name of the phenomena where many strategic points inside the land are isolated from each other, and really hard to access. Even though they are important points for history reasons, touristic reasons, of topography reasons

For this chapter, I tried to adapt the language I developed inside the water, and bring is to the land, where the “rules” are the exact opposite. In the next page you can see the first mapping of theses “in land islands”.

# 04 In land islands Strategic urban points, with topographical or historical meaning, that will be use as the stable and fixed parts of the new system.

This places will host the coming people from the harbor and will function as island on the land. The main advantage of this places is their posibiloty to function as a joint in the human arm. The joint itself doesnt moves but it enable all the other parts to have movement and flexbilyty posibilties.

one terytory/ 7 projects In the following page the drawings shows how seven projects became form the first main one. These seven projects are also inside the water and inside the land as well. They all have in common the strategy of the “Water surfaces”; in the next chapter I’ll be more specific about their virtues

The next drawing shows the main concept of connecting the land and the water into one coherent network. There are three main types of networks, I’m aiming for the Distributed and more democratic net, in contrary for the centralized or the de-centralized that gives much less space and opportunities to the public, and to bottom up reality

Each of the projects have a subject, for example Part I, which is located in MontJuic will create a huge public spaces there, which will be extremely accessible to the people who comes from the port Another example, Part V is the “Pleasure Island” that is what Cooney island is for New York, The pleasure island is more isolated, and hard to find, but once you found it, you are in a place where everything is allowed!

Energy/people/data The third parts of the project discuss the way it acts in real time. The three elements that make the system works are Data, People and Energy. These elements connecting the sea and the land, the islands in the sea, and the islands in the water. Each one of these flows is independent, but together the three of them creates a multi layered system, that defined itself by its parts Three FlowsEnergy- The energy is produced under the islands, inside the water. The bigger the island isthe more energy it can produce. Already today there are many ways to produce energy inside the water. For example, the energy that produce by the waves, In this project there are many situations in which ships creates waves, so this is a very good chance to start and produce energy only from this act of moving water. Moreover, In the future there may be even much more ways to take energy for the ocean water. People- the flow of people is different by its definition, people can’t fly (yet!) and they can’t crash into buildings, that by their flow is much slower and depends a lot on topography, peo ple can’t be shipped directly (like the energy

48

flow) from one place to the other Data- flow of data is crucial for the whole process. The data that are being gathered aretime, day, place, season, no. of ships entering the port, no. of people inside the water, no. of activities. Al this data gathering, (that in the future will be very easy to collect at any real time moment), affect the creation of the islands, determines their own shape and decide their disappearing and repairing process. As you can see in the following diagrams- data flows directly from one place to the other. It’s very important that data will reach from place to place the fastest so the process which I described will happed fatly and accurately to the current need The flow have also can be changed by their density, length, amount etc. that are changing the whole time, like a river the flow constantly. The three part are equal to each other, none of them is more important than the other, this unity as a hole is what make the system work not the individual parts

# 05 three flows Energy/People/Data are the three main forces that will dictate the movement and the creation of new spaces in the system.

The three flows can be seen and represent the veins in the human body. Just as the “In land island” may be referred as joint, and the “surface on demand system” are the palm.

Main "Players" Each of the “players” has his own role in this futuristic view the ships brings the people and starts the process, then the islands react to this new reality and as they pop up new surfaces are being created. Inside the land the Strategic point are being full with people and start to be more dynamic and public and the three flows start to move back and forth form the water inside the land and vice versa

form follow data

Do We need Architects?

After the great sentence of the 20th century “form follow function”, we can start to adapt into a new reason “form follow data” especially in this project. Data such as the number of arriving people for example, can be immediately affecting on the shape or the size if the surface, in that way are spaces become smarter and much more efficient

In these future reality, that described here, comes the question, maybe we won’t need architects in the future at all. The realty that the project creates comes from bottom to the top. The people are the one that creates this kind of reality. This is an alternative vision in which we no longer need big architects, and big controllers in our daily physical spaces, we can create spaces that react and changes specifically to our changing needs

The images in page 30 represent the views of the three flows that move all along the project the whole time. The main thing that changes is their density and their length. For example morning times are different that evening times, summer are different from summer etc.

PRODUCTION/ cONSUMPTION Phase I- Low Presssure

This part of The work will discuss the transformation of the system into productiveconsumptive relations between the sea and the land. The idea is that the island inside the water will create energy that will serve the strategic points inside the land. By doing so the water surfaces will be able to produce energy according to their size. Big islands will produce a lot of energy, while the smaller will produce less The islands will have underwater tools to produce energy from the water and the ships movements. This underwater tools will work and look like iceberg. They will move and change according to the amount of energy that is needed inside the land and the specific moment Right Three diagrams of the different situation of the system- Low pressure, medium pressure a high pressure. High pressure situation happens when all the different parts work at their full capacity. Many ships and people are entering the port, many of the strategic points are being occupied and a lo t of energy is being produced. That is representing in yellow color. The low pressure is represented in Blue color

Bugs in the system

In this chapter I’ll present two future scenarios that this project can go to. Both are possible development, or maybe mutations of the project but it’s important to think about the outcomes of this project as well. I call it bugs in the system. The first bug is the possibility that the project can predict is the failure of data collection that will lead to huge traffic jams, and will block the whole port territory. Every system that relay totally on data collecting must take into consideration the option it will fail. Again, I don’t see this scenario as a failure but as a success, because if these things are predicted and consider as a possible option, they become part of the system and the project as well

# 06 what if it goes wrong? Chaos and Order in Architecture Another part will be dedicated in Chaos and Order ideas inside Architecture language. Question such as what is chaos? How can it be represented? Can we draw the exact line when a system is out of order? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each one? The subject will be followed by images of photography and artists

64

Futuristic projects have to keep in mind the possibility that everything will fail. Over collection and over relying on data, may lead as in the end to a huge nightmare.

65

66

67

Floating Market, Bangkok, Thiland 2015

68

69

System without islands The second scenario takes into consideration the option that if this system is strong enough, maybe we don’t need the islands as connectors anymore. We can just imagine ships porting together in the middle of the ocean. If this will happen to the project is a success not a failure, as it means the system created such a strong behavior with people? It actually changed the way the shipped and the way they entered the city. So maybe at this point we can take the land out, just like the old traditional Chinese games, where you pool every time part of the tower, until it completely fall apart.

70

71

formless architecture FORMLESS ARCHITECTURE IS ARCHITECTURE WITHOUT ANY SPECIFIC FORM; OF COURSE EVERYTHING IN NATURE HAS A FORM. BUT BY SAYING “FORMLESS” I MEAN EVERY SECOND IT MAY SEEM DIFFERENT AND UNCERTAIN. YOU CAN ONLY CATCH A SPECIFIC FRAME, A SPECIFIC MOMENT, BUT YOU CAN SAY THIS MOMENT IS CERTAIN AND FINISH SHAPE. ALL YOU HAVE IS THE MOMENT YOU FREEZE THE PROJECT On he contrary there are the in land islands that are stable, as I mentioned these are place the has a very strong and specific form that’s why I define them in the project as collectors of people, as main strategic point for this formless architecture. Every formless this need its opposite to define mire Cleary its goals and meaning

72

73

cHEOS AND ORDER in architectur

In the next ages ill use images to discuss the ideas of Chaos and order in Architecture. This part of the project where everything can fall apart eventually, but it doesn’t mean failure, as I mentioned before. It’s important to show and discuss these ideas in other fields such as art and photography The next images represents key moment where order is almost a chaos and vice versa. Its examine the border (if there are at all?

The main point of this project is the importance of the process itself, and the outcome is just what folow this. in that sense it’s hard to try and describe conclusion, as this project is never ending process, same as nature. And this is the most important conclusion. My work, as described here had three main partsThe sea and the land The surface on demand system The data/ people/ energy flow All of these part create a full project that can be seen only a one big and coherent unit. The part create something bigger and this is Responsive architecture, the way I see it

and be together with each other, moreover, the project takes this need and bting it to a very unxpected but full of potential- the ocean. The idea affect the land as well, and can create much stronger network of relation between people- energy and data. the project doest try to predict the future because for this ill surly be wrong. Instead i tried to actually design it, and maybe even affect some parts of it. that’s why this project should be considered not as ferry tale but Rather as a science fiction one.

# 07 CONCLUSIONS

“The best way to predict the future is to design it” -Buckminster Fuller-

we must start and consider our future as real time dta driven, the more data you have, the more accurate and suffient your acts will be, on the other hand collectiong data as much as you can, doesnt meant to outcome wont fail and wont have any bugs in its systme, this was onother main point in my project. Try to combine the architectural process witj real time data collecing, while on the other hand be ready the cush at any given time The relevance of the project is by the answer it gives to the everlasting need of pepole to social

80

81

Conclusion People-Water-Land Ferry tale Vs Science fiction The project touches the basic feeling of us as humans, a motion that will never disappear, no matter how fast the realty around us is changing, and this is the need to meet and social democrat and freely, anywhere and anytime. This is at the base of the project, and this is the base for us as architects and physical realty designers

The chapters represents the structure and main elements for the projects- the sea/land- surface on demand- three main flows Is tried to describe in this work what makes each of the parts so relevant and crucial. And especially what makes them relevant to every port city around the world, not specifically Barcelona

The project touches the basic feeling of us as humans, a motion that will never disappear, no matter how fast the realty around us is changing, and this is the need to meet and social democrat and freely, anywhere and any time. This is at the base of the project, and this is the base for us as architects and physical realty The project is based on the ability to calculate and analyze data quickly and accurately. Data are the first catalysator of the project. It doesn’t mean we shouldn’t take into our considerations subjects such as the freedom of citizens and government power; this is a subject of another thesis I’m sure.

In the process of creating this project i used as many tools as i can from hand drawing to complicated grass hopper scripts. I also worked a lot on MAYA software in order to produce a 3d video, in the length of 3 three minutes. I wrote many grasshopper scripts in order to predict the possible of movement is the site, and to find suitable forms or the islands. I also used more traditional tools, such as AutoCAD and Rhino The advantages of working with many tools are huge, as you can get the best of every single software. For example Grasshopper can create complicated geometry pretty easily. Another example is MAYA that gives you amazing rendering results, and creating 3d motion movies.

Cl3ver This is a new platform to present 3d models on the internet cloud; this is mainly for architects and designers. It’s a site where you can create your own design and upload your project into. By using this platform I created my own site, and you can find all the information about the projects- plans, section, 3d renders, texts etc. there. It’s a very important tool because many people can now reach the project and have full access to its profile

84

Maya This software was really helpful in the process, as many of the form I used have e-regular geometry. Maya software is mainly for animation. But this field is now becoming more and more important for architects to explore. Also, in Maya you can make really good renders, with really accurate lighting, that I found really really well. And of course all the animation of the project, and the 3 min video I produced were done by Maya Grasshopper The script I used the most to define the project was the “minimal path”. This script finds very queqly the shortest way from one point to the other. By placing many points I was able to get hundreds of line, very quickly, and from them start to create the island shape and section. This tool was very useful as the form in in constant changing, as was said earlier in this work, and by getting this line I was able to show the changes that being done the whole time in the project
