uukko, the Nordic knife, has traditionally been the most important survival tool in the harsh Arctic environment. It was the one go-to tool everyone carried and it was used for making firewood and kindling, for hunting and fishing, for cleaning the catch – be it fish or game – for cooking and eating, and at the most extreme situations, the knife could be used to defend oneself from the dangers nature had.
No one left home without a knife and everybody learned how to efficiently use one already at young age. There were – and still are – different knives for different users, all matched to the needs and capabilities of the user. And for festive occasions there were decorated knives that could be used as functional accessories for the clothing. The Marttiini story began in 1928 at the land of dark Arctic winters and the summer midnight sun, when blacksmith Janne Marttiini decided to establish a knife factory to Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland. With the user in mind, he began to create beautiful, high quality knives to be used in the harshest conditions imaginable – knives for people that used them every day and whose life could even depend on the knife.

But don't let the knife's beauty fool you. The moment you put one to a test, you'll be convinced it is the perfect tool for your need. You feel the sensation of natural materials like leather, curly birch, reindeer antler, and of course the ultra sharp blade always made from finest steel. Marttiini knives are still manufactured at the Arctic Circle. Today they are a combination of generations of craftsmanship heritage and modern technology that create knives that are not only sharp, but also perfectly represent the beauty and toughness of the North. They're called "puukko" – the Nordic knife.

TRADITIONAL KNIVES
Marttiini Traditional Series knives respect Finnish knife making and craftmanship skills, classic designs and arctic region’s traditions for decoration. Lynx was Marttiini’s very first knife model. It has been in production since the factory’s beginning. Lynx was awarded the best product award at the Viipuri knife fair in 1932. The Lynx knife’s special feature is the blade’s dropped point: the slightly curved blade tip makes it easier to lift a hot coffee pot from a camp fire. Lynx knives are still in production and follow the original design. Lappknife – lapinleuku – is one of the most popular knives in the northern regions. Lappknives are used for splitting wood for fire, slicing frozen reindeer meat and all kinds of carving and cutting. This excellent wilderness knife is also perfect for hunting and skinning. Marttiini still produces the Lappknife, which is favoured by reindeer herders in the same region where the model was originally born.

DESIGN KNIVES
Marttiini Design knives are especially impressive and elegant gifts or collectors’ knives: Design products that – in addition to being functional knives – are also designed to please the eye. Knives featuring antler bone on the handle are decorated with Lappish and Arctic engravings. The same motifs are repeated on the sheath. Elaborate handles are made of reindeer antler bone and curly birch. According to Lappish mythology, the rattle at the butt end of the handle drives away bad spirits from the knife and protects the knife's user. Many Marttiini Design knives have a story to tell: memories, history, traditions, celebrations. The Marttiini Design Series includes numbered anniversary models that have a limited production and availability.

OUTDOOR KNIVES
Knife is an integral part of outdoor life. It’s an all-round tool that everyone should have on their belt, in the backpack or as part of the camping gear. Just like the traditional Nordic knives, the more modern Outdoor knives bear the Marttiini heritage: functionality and uncompromising quality. Marttiini Outdoor series features knives for the outdoorsmen and hikers as well as traditional carving knives for craftsmen. The smallest knives are designed for children that are learning their knife skills, and they are very popular among younger scouts. Marttiini folding knives break away from the traditional Nordic designs, but not from the Marttiini promise. They are functional, high quality knives with a Marttiini touch on the design.

MATERIALS
BLADE The basis for the sharpness of a Marttiini knife is its machine ground sharpening angle. At Marttiini's factory in Rovaniemi a blade preform goes through various production phases before being ready for the final critical operation. This phase calls for extraordinary craftsmanship as at the final stage the blade is hand ground, giving it the famous Marttiini sharpness.
STAINLESS CHROME STEEL The stainless steel used by Marttiini is low maintenance blade material that maintains its sharpness for a long time. The proportion of chrome in the steel blend is 13% and the hardness is 53– 54 on the Rockwell scale (HRC). We recommend the diamond sharpener for chrome steel.
50
DAMASCUS
CARBINOX T508
CARBON STEEL
The Damascus blade is made by combining two different steels in thin layers. The blade has 120 steel layers that have been welded together under extreme pressure and heat. The result is a beautifully patterned, stainless and very hard blade (HRC 6 0) that stays sharp even in extended use.
Carbinox T508 steel combines the best characteristics of carbon and chrome steel: toughness, easy honing, and extreme durability. The steel blend carbon content is 0.5%, chrome content 8% and its hardness 56–57 HRC. The material is not classified as stainless but its resistance to corrosion is considerably higher than traditional carbon steel. For the maintenance of Carbinox T508 it is enough to clean the blade carefully and dry it after use. However, we also recommend an occasional treatment of the blade with unsalted oil.
A blade made of carbon steel is especially suitable for carving and it is easy to hone it to its original sharpness. With a carbon steel blade, it is important to dry it immediately after use. It’s also good to treat it regularly with unsalted oil, eg. cooking oil. A regularly treated carbon steel blade remains rust-free and has an especially long lifespan.
MARTEF COATING The slick Martef coating reduces friction to almost zero. A Martefcoated blade cuts especially smoothly, and cleaning the blade after use is very easy.
BLADE · SHEATH
SHEATH The purpose of the sheath is to protect the knife and the user when the knife is not in use. A tailored sheath is designed for every Marttiini knife. The sheath’s small details are decorative but often they also have practical functions. For example, the rectangular piece of leather at the tip of the sheaths prevents a sheath hung on a belt from swinging back and forth.
LEATHER Leather sheaths of Marttiini knives are made of plant or chrome tanned leather. Sheaths are made of natural and dyed leather. Knife sheaths are still mostly made by hand. Each sheath must be exactly the designed size and shape so that it forms a perfect match with the knife. A template
iron is used to cut a blank from leather. Before sewing the edges of the sheath are glued together. Several sheaths have a plastic sleeve inside that prevents the blade from puncturing the sheath. Decorations are made either on the sheath blank or the finished sheath. The sheath’s surface finishing may also
include varnish that protects the sheath from dirt and moisture. The rivets and brass bands reinforce and decorate the sheath.
NYLON FABRIC
PLASTIC
Extremely durable highgrade nylon fabric, which is puncture-proof and tearresistant, as well as heat and wear resistant and fastdrying. These properties make it easy to maintain, light and pleasant to use.
A durable and hygienic plastic sheath is practical with knives that are used in under damp and dirty conditions.

MATERIALS
HANDLES The handle of a knife has to fit the hand well. The easiest way to find the best fitting handle model is to try them yourself. The intended use naturally affects the choice of the shape and material of the handle.
ANTLER BONE
CURLY BIRCH
BIRCH
Marttiini’s Lappish tradition is best displayed in knife handles where reindeer and moose antlers are combined with the beautiful Finnish curly birch. Turning reindeer antlers to decorative knife handles is a skill that’s passed on from one craftsman to another at the Marttiini factory.
The traditional handle material of Finnish knives is curly birch. This tree grows in central and eastern Finland. Curly birch is perfect material for a knife handle, because it is durable and beautiful. There is only a limited amount of premium curly birch on the market, making the price considerably higher than in the case of ordinary birch.
Ordinary or straight grain birch is used on the handles of several traditional Marttiini knives. Birch is characteristically very light in color and hard enough for durable handles that are comfortable in hand.
52
HEAT-TREATED CURLY BIRCH For some models the wooden handles are heat-treated, giving the wood the beautiful dark hardwood look. This treatment also makes the handle moisture repellent, durable and practically maintenancefree.
WOOD TREATMENTS Wooden handles are given a wax, varnish or stain finish. The wax deepens the glow of the wooden handle and at the same time protects it from dirt and moisture. A waxed handle also feels pleasant in the hand. Varnishing emphasises and protects the natural color of the curly birch. It also protects the wood from wear and moisture. Staining gives the handle a shade that changes over time without covering the wood's grain.
HANDLES
FERRULES Several wooden handle knives have metallic ferrules. The raw material used is either brass, German silver, cast bronze or stainless steel. It’s natural for brass, German silver and bronze to get stained and change color over time. Stained ferrules can be polished with an ordinary metal cleaning agent. The Condor series finger guard ferrules
are made either of PP or ABS plastic. PP plastic is a fullcoloured, tough and machine washable material. ABS plastic is used for ferrules with a metallic coating. We do not recommend machine washing for metal coated ferrules, since strong washing agents and high water temperatures could damage the coating.
RUBBER MIXTURE
POM
G-10
LAMINATED WOOD
The Condor knives of the Fishing, Hunting and Kitchen series have handles made of a rubber mixture suitable for handling foodstuffs. The ergonomically-shaped rubber handle is machine washable, easy to care for, hygienic and safe. The rubber handle also feels pleasantly warm in the outdoors, even in extremely cold or wet conditions. The handle’s rough pattern and finger guard guarantee a safe and firm grip on Condor series knives.
POM is a very durable and resilient material used on the Kitchen Vintro knive’s handles. It offers a comfortable, smooth grip and is very easy to keep clean.
Glassfiber and epoxy based G-10 is an ideal material for a folding knive’s handle. It is extremely durable, impervious to water and requires practically no maintanence. G-10 handle gives a solid base for a good grip on the knife.
Constructed of thin sheets of wood glued together, laminated wood is very stable and weather resistant material and excellent for knife handles for extreme conditions. It can be shaped like wood, needs very little maintenance and offers solid performance for years.

A Marttiini blade cuts best when it is sharp and well-cared for. A regularly maintained and sharpened knife retains its best qualities for decades.
DIAMOND SHARPENING STEEL
HANDLE ·· Wooden handles: products with wooden handles must not be washed in a dishwasher. If necessary, waxed wooden handles may be re-waxed with colorless wood wax. If a varnished handle is damaged, you may repair it by varnishing only the damaged area or by sanding and varnishing the whole handle. ·· Rubber handles: wash the handle after use. ·· Ferrules: Stained metal ferrules (eg. bronze) can be cleaned with ordinary metal polishing agents. It is not recommended to wash knives with metal coated plastic finger guards (Condor series) in dishwasher, since strong washing agents and high temperature could cause the coating to come loose. WOODEN PRODUCTS Do not machine wash wooden products. WARRANTY Marttiini gives its products a three year warranty that covers material and production defects. The warranty of the Martef coating is one year. All rights reserved.

Select the suitable sharpening tools for knives, filleting, and kitchen knives from the Marttiini sharpening tool selection. For sharpening Marttiini knives we recommend the Marttiini sharpening stone or the diamond sharpener. ·· First grind the blade well with the coarse side of the sharpener, using a circular motion. ·· Switch to the smooth side of the stone to finish up. Marttiini sharpening sticks are especially intended for filleting knives and kitchen knives. ·· Hold the sharpening stick upright and repeatedly draw both sides of the blade diagonally downwards with the cutting edge pointing upwards. It is best to sharpen an especially worn and dulled blade with either a grinder or a coarse sharpening stone. Be sure not to give your blade a round edge. Remember to hone or grind your knife to the same angle that it had at the time of purchase.
