KOLLECTIV travels by rsk di studio VOL.
1
This photo magazine is the first of its kind: it’s main purpose is to organize photos of places that will be used to inspire new bodies of art work for emerging artist, Raquel Kalil. It is a concerted effort to create thematic pieces of work that reveal an intimate relationship of places and the traveler’s memory. Using a variety of media, both KOLLECTIV and RaquelKalil.com offer the viewer a sense of the artists landscape. In this first volume, KOLLECTIV creates a catlogue of two landscapes of Central America. In 2010, RSK di Studio ventured on a road trip from Guatemala City to San Salvador. This issue documents two cities of interest, La Antigua and Alegría. Their spatial similarity captures the artist’s interest in remote spaces surrounded by powerful landscapes: the volcano[es]. The paintings that will follow the production of this magazine fall under the title, Tierra de mi Madre. It is an homage to the artists heritage and sense of identity.

La Antigua01 Surrounded by volcanoes, La Antigua, or Old City, sits in the central high lands of Guatemala. Its architecture transports us 300yrs inside a spanish colonial postcard.
La Procesión One of Antigua’s main attractions includes its elaborate religious processions. Our travel begins at Holy Weekonly a few days until East Sunday.
We arrived at our hotel, a spanish style home with modest rooms and lighting. As the sunset began to creep, the air began to hym as the villagers gathered for their holy union. I had never seen anything like it: a storm of purple crawling through a narrow street, carrying crosses, coffins and beautifully decorated sculptures of La Virgin Maria and Jesus Cristo. The procession came out of nowhere but would lead us into the central park, where we were welcomed with unfamiliarity of colours, sounds and smells. Our Central American roadtrip thus begins.

El jardĂn de mi Abuelo05 For as long as I can remember, my Abuelo lived in a magical palace far away from civilization. Surrounded by wild greens , sweet fruit and collection of butterflies

My Abuelo was a quiet man, reserved and left in solitude. His children would make trips to his garden whenever he allowed their company. I remember the smell of the soil and the chill of the morning dew-every day, he would wake early and begin his gardening. By mid afternoon, my abuelo would sit under a table and drink a cup of pure black coffee. I remember hiding in the concrete tree house. Although it was unsafe and incomplete, I regarded the space as a tower or looking glass. It was a pair of lens I could inhabit, a space for my eyes and mind to wander...

El volcรกn Tecapa
Tecapa, or La Laguna de Alegria, is every travelers dream. But beware of the siren, who might lure you into the crater!
La Laguna de Alegría Perhaps one of the most impressionable landscapes I’ve had the luxury of growing up in. This legendary lake hides about one mile from my Abuelo’s garden.
