FROM THE PRESIDENT Mark Joyner ANOTHER YEAR HAS COME AND GONE… AND WHAT A YEAR IT WAS Wow! I cannot believe my year as President is coming to a close. Just yesterday I was preparing to assume the presidency and we were on the verge of our first MLS conversion in over ten years. Now, I’m preparing to pass the baton of leadership to my good friend John Finn; and our members have made a smooth transition to the Matrix MLS system. In addition to Matrix, we launched Data Checker which makes it easier for all us to ensure that our listings are in compliance. And in October, we introduced Down Payment Resource—a product designed to make it far easier for you to connect your buyers with potential sources of down payment assistance. And before this year is out, we will provide all CVR MLS users with another benefit of membership—eProperty Extra, an excellent client contact program that will allow you to keep connected to past and potential clients.

All of these broader community initiatives are designed to enhance our region’s quality of life and thus your ability to sell real estate. Providing our members with the resources, services and community engagement they need to conduct ethical, professional, and profitable businesses is— literally—the Association’s mission statement. In 2014 we sought to accomplish this mission through timely educational offerings; free Fair Housing training; free REALTOR® safety classes; special events, including a really fun Outstanding Production Awards Reception and the biggest REALTORfest ever; a totally redesigned RARealtors.com; the President’s monthly video message; the production of consumer focused infographics that promote the value of using a REALTOR®; a multi-media campaign aimed at millennial buyers; and so much more.

In addition to our MLS accomplishments, I am extremely proud of our advocacy and community engagement efforts this year. In cooperation with the Virginia Association of REALTORS®, we helped pass legislation creating the First-Time Homebuyer Savings Plan. With this plan, we hope saving for that first home will become as important as saving for college. Speaking of saving, we saved RAR dollars this year, by securing over $80,000 in grants from private foundations and the National Association of REALTORS® to fund the development of a regional housing plan, our participation in the Better Block Initiative, and the development of an interactive database that will measure and analyze the region’s growth over the next 50 years.

When you become President, you have served on the Boards of Directors of RAR/CVR MLS and on the Executive Committees. You feel like you have a really good handle on all things RAR and CVR MLS; and you do. But as President you have a window into how incredibly hard our Association works for us, how deeply committed to excellence the Association is, and how our professional success is without a doubt, the Association’s top priority. As your president my focus was simple…Help the Association and the MLS help you in your quest to help landlords/tenants, sellers, and buyers, of real estate. I’m proud of our Association, grateful to our members, and proud to have served as your President! I wish my successor, John Finn, much success and great fun all along the way!

Finn, Jr., shared some goals and areas of focus for his term: “During 2015, we will continue to focus on providing our members with the strongest portfolio of technology products available, with the foundation being a state of the art MLS system,” he said. “Moreover, we’ll work to provide the educational resources and advocacy that our members need to be productive professionals. 2015 GENERAL ASSEMBLY PREVIEW As we prepare for the upcoming legislative session, the value of RPAC contributions is already apparent. The 2015 Virginia General Assembly session begins January 15 and the REALTOR® Legislative Agenda is taking shape. Please review the issues we will be working on this winter. RAR’s government affairs department continues to lobby for you and your livelihood, but the most important voice in this discussion is yours. Your elected officials need to hear from you, especially on important issues.

Overview of the 2015 VAR Legislative Agenda Draft 1. Storm Water Facility Management Agreements Current Virginia law does not require sellers to disclose the presence of storm water facilities on residential property, which can leave purchasers unaware of resulting maintenance obligations. VAR and RAR will seek legislation to add “storm water maintenance agreement” to the Virginia Residential Property Disclosure form.

2. Landlord-Tenant Act Update In closing a loophole, it is recommended that “family trust” be added to the Virginia State Code as an entity that can be represented in court by a non-lawyer.

Joyner Fine Properties

3. POA/HOA Fees VAR and RAR will introduce legislation to address several issues with professionally managed property owner associations. Items on the agenda include:
